I'm sure that most of you guys know (PMing me, asking for favors like we're actually friends) that I was stationed in Japan last year, August 2016.

I've been busy being a fucking moron, really. I bought a '97 Type X from Osaka without ever seeing it because it was priced lower than the only other Midnight Purple Type X listed at the time. When it arrived, I could see why. Mistake number one.

I didn't want to put fuckloads of work into the Type X, so I traded it in for a very clean '88 Silvia Q's two-tone. I knew that no Midnight Purple 180SXs had been posted for sale since I bought mine but I was eager to get into a 'fun car'. If you're reading this far then you know why I opted for an NA two-tone. Fanboy dreams, box checked. I figured I'd tinker on this Q's a little and just enjoy how original it was. I thought it'd be a lifetime until another Midnight Purple car came around. Mistake number two.*

I was still browsing ads because I wasn't really happy with the Q's. I felt like I settled again. Earlier this year (2017) I finally found what I was looking for: a reasonably priced Midnight Purple Type X. The car was located two hours away from me and although I didn't have any room to buy another car I decided to take the drive to look at it. Obviously I ended up buying it. Here's why:

1996 Midnight Purple Type X (late '96, first year)
90,XXX KMs (~56,XXX mi)
Factory 5-speed
No HICAS
DCC
Clean History
Appraised by JAAA

...and my favorite part: I'm the second owner.

So here it is. Came with an aftermarket head unit, rear deck speakers, subwoofer, and those ugly fucking wheels. Other than that the car is completely stock.

http://i777.photobucket.com/albums/yy52/terranovadario/180SX_zpse1ytruac.jpg

I've learned two things throughout this whole shitshow:

1.) I'm an impatient fucking moron.

2.) I could really give a fuck less about what other people are into. I'm very drawn towards cars that are all original and have no shitty history behind them. People think I'm crazy for being so particular but I've come to realize it's just what I like.

My friends (guys that have been in Japan longer than I have) are cool enough to help me order parts. I just picked up E5 and with that comes the ability to register a second car so I've started ordering some parts to get the car lower and converted to 5lug. I scooped some R33 wheels while on vacation so the car will be pretty 'mild' by most standards once I get the parts in. I have other wheels on order but they'll take about 4 months to get done. Don't worry, I promise you'll hate them.

* - Mistake number two isn't really a mistake. The NA, 5speed CA18DE is actually really fun to drive on curvy roads. You feel the lack of pull on the highway but driving twisties is fun. If it doesn't sell I'm going to keep it fully OEM and just replace the bushings.

Care to share what was ordered?

Just the 'usual'

KTS Coilovers
Ichiba Hubs
PMU D1 Spec Pads F/R
17X9+17 XT7s (bought from a friend here)

I'm still hunting down the correct rotors size because there doesn't seem to be a straight answer on what to use. Redrilling them isn't a normal practice here.

I was going to run the R33 wheels with 5mm spacers all around but the XT7s my friend had were too clean to pass up. Trade +cash deal was struck.

Still hunting RUCA.

Still waiting on the RUCA and tires to show up. Paid for insurance and got temporary plates for the car as well. I can legally drive ti around now while I get it ready for inspection. In Japan your car has to meet certain criteria before you can get a number plate.

A friend was able to help me sneak in a last-minute bid on some teardrops with brand new BF Goodrich tires. The wheels that came on the car were fucking horrible and one of the front tires developed a bubble to boot. Happy to get these on:

The car has to pass the inspection to register. Can't be too low and the wheels can't be too aggressive, etc. Besides the coilovers and RUCA, I can't install anything else since my 5lug wheels (above) aren't going to pass. More waiting :/

Yeah the base is pretty obnoxious with the amount of redundancies in the registration process.

I chose LMGT4s because I've lost interest in TEs, I guess. Either way this will just be another cookie-cutter Type X...mostly.

It is genuinely hard to be original with an S13 these days. Nearly everything is played out at this point, doesn't matter if its TE's, CR's or LMGT's its all been done a million times.

I think what really makes a car cool is how the modifications are executed, shit car with nice parts is lame, nice car with shit parts is lame. Nice car with nice parts put together by someone who cares is always something I can personally appreciate.

Long overdue update:

Got the car registered. Passed without any issues since it was un-fucked-with. Went to install my parts after doing my research and the front rotors didn't fit: I needed S14 brakes no matter what. A friend of mine just so happened to be at UpGarage and sent me a picture of some S14 brakes for a great price. Another friend with an UpGarage account ordered them from me. Can't thank these guys enough for helping me out!

SO. I was able to get a week of leave approved to get some shit done. This included things beyond working on my car. My wife's Aunt & Uncle came to Yokohama (from Kumamoto, Google Maps the distance) for a conference and we met them there for dinner and a walk around town. they stayed at Landmark Tower in a room near the top. The view didn't disappoint.

http://i.imgur.com/899KAqM.jpg

Later that same week my wife and I went to Tokyo to get our passports. She was able to but I didn't have everything I needed. It was a nice walk from the train station to the Embassy.

http://imgur.com/WXsLa7e.jpg

After a week of non-car related stuff I ended up back at the garage on base to get the car done. On the first day I got the rear all handled with the occasional help of a friend of a friend (that ended up being a friend of mine) that happened to be at the shop.

http://imgur.com/iPUfXBg.jpg

Adjusting the RUCA a little with minutes to spare before closing:

http://imgur.com/EJpsU2T.jpg

On the second day I worked on the front only to find out I needed to hack the heat shields to avoid rubbing on my new front rotors.

http://imgur.com/Q8Ibolb.jpg

One of the guys that works at the shop happened to have some touch-up paint handy. After sanding down the letters a little I opted to paint the NISSAN letters black:

http://imgur.com/7DPaAmb.jpg

My wife came by to have lunch and we went to a local Home's store to get some hardware for the RUCA. The DMax RUCA require extended bolts where they connect to the spindle. I don't really like this so I'll be upgrading to Battle Version RUCA sometime soon.

After my wife and I drove to get the bolts/nuts she dropped me off and I buttoned the car up for the ride home. The fucking heat shield still rubbed on the passenger's side on the way home and the front was still set at pre-runner height. Thank God there are no pictures of that shit. Got the car home, lowered the front in the dark, and let it sit overnight.

Went outside the next morning and got to work adjusting things. My dog doesn't care about safety:

http://imgur.com/1SoXuw3.jpg

This was on Sunday. Got the car to a reasonable stopping point and decided to relax on my last day off. Car definitely needs more adjustments (read: low) to look good. Threw on my 5mm spacers in the rear.

http://imgur.com/gQVPrjn.jpg

...and that's where it sits right now. The KTS coils are pretty bumpy. Might consider upgrading suspension and selling these or using them on the two-tone. We'll see how it goes.

Parts Installed:
KTS Coilovers
Ichiba F/R Hubs
DMax RUCA
S14 K's F Brakes

I've never had a 'fancy' exhaust and the Tomei Ti Expreme looks so awesome...

It's a great piece for the money and definitely the best sounding exhaust I've ever mounted to my RB. I do, however, have a few complaints about mine.

The silencer mounting hardware is a joke. The silencer tip cuts the exhaust exit size down to about 1.5 inches. It really quiets down this loud exhaust but probably at the cost of a great increase in backpressure. The silencer tip is mounted with one, yes, only one freaking screw on the bottom. A few minutes of moderate throttle, the unsecured top side of the silencer was being pushed outward and the silencer was sitting cockeyed in the muffler. Anyone with some intellect would use 2 screws minimum. One on top, one bottom. Even the small silencer for the Yoshimura on my bike uses two screws. It's a minor complaint, easily remedied by adding one (or two) more screws, but it just goes to show Tomei did not put any effort into testing their product. I'm guessing most people just throw the silencer in the trash anyway.

The exhaust coupling springs are uninsulated and will rattle against the exhaust pipe at a certain engine rpm. My bike's Yoshi uses coupling springs also but they have rubber insulators to avoid any metal on metal rattling. I've never understood the purpose of the springs. Again, I'm guessing most people just remove the springs and trash them.

The welds appear to have very poor penetration. I've never welded titanium but I've professionally welded a lot of steel and aluminum. Maybe titanium weld is completely different but to me, the Tomei welds look cold and shallow. Possibly the reason their manifolds are always cracking on the welds. My exhaust hasn't cracked yet, time will tell.

The exhaust tip isn't flared or rolled. It's a gigantic tip with the sharpness of a cookie cutter just waiting to slice open the shins of some unsuspecting person opening the trunk. For this reason, I mounted the tip flush with the back bumper instead of it sticking out slightly like I normally would. That hasn't worked out so great either; the exhaust flameballs are too close to the bumper and now my recently refinished bumper already has damaged clearcoat.

Those minor complaints aside, it's an awesome exhaust system and worth every penny. Would definitely buy again.

Thanks! It's pretty 'vanilla' in the scheme of Type X S13s but I love it all the same.

Agreed. I had one on the Evo and the craftsmanship was amazing- especially considering the price for a titanium exhuast. If I was confident I wouldn't destroy it on the S13, I would definitely want one.

My suspension is far from 'dialed in' and the roads here can be very shitty in places. I'll probably end up not spending the money on something like that. It's fun to dream, though. I might just search for an OEM Nismo option exhaust and use that for now. I'd be lying if I said an exhaust is on the top of my priorities list.

Having been to the Tomei facility, I can say that it's a solid choice for the money they are asking. Great quality, and it fits well. I'm STILL bugging them to produce it for my chassis (they are testing it on their demo car).

I'm still wondering if the exhaust can be had for less than list prices if I drive to Tomei on the weekend. I'd like to use one a whole lot but the amount of money can be spread out to other parts of the car I'm not happy with, you know?

Review

Thanks for the review. Hard to find 'negatives' about the exhaust.

Hey man sweet car. I just drove my GTR out of some guy's asshole and I'm going to trade it in for an SR-powered Master Race 180SX like yours. Thank you for being the coolest motherfucker alive. I was gonna just drink bleach until I met you!

I need to get different RUCA. The DMax ones fit like shit. Once I get them in my hands I'll try to do my own alignment to remove some camber in the rear and add a little more up front. Car is lowered a tad more and I'll take some pictures soon. It's rubbing the fender liners at full lock but I don't want to remove the plastics just yet. As long as it's not hitting the fender I can live. It looks loads better now. My Mom is shipping my Ganadors from my storage unit back in the US. She's the real MVP.

September 17, he asked me to meet at Mobara. Not really a fan of watching so I'm unsure if I'll go if I cannot drift.

As for the tomei exhaust, I would not recommend it if you plan to have the car somewhat low. Knew a guy who had one, his s13 was a monster truck and he even was scraping some places. My Reinhard is getting eaten alive everytime I drive.

For the dmax ruca's, I have them but mine came with bolts to use. Work perfectly fine so unsure what your issue is unless the bolts weren't included.

Yeah man I'm coming off the idea. Titanium is cool but ultimately too expensive for my taste.

My RUCA were from YAJ. No hardware...had to get some from Home's. I don't like the 'full-circle' ones any way. Battle Version and Cusco seem way better.

Car is rubbing a ton in the front...plastic only thank God. I have to add some camber up front, take some out in the rear, and then get some new RUCA because I'm OCD. The brakes are squealing a ton when I roll. Sounds like metal on the disc but when I brake it goes away. I'm guessing the hardware is rubbing somewhere but I'm too lazy to look.

Beautiful and rare car

You're incredibly lucky to have wanted this like the rest of us and actually gotten the chance to get one, and a clean slate at that

Continue to do tasteful and timeless quality modifications to this car, that is the only thing worthy of doing to a vehicle this nice.

I really wanted Omori LMGT4s when first got here. The engraved spoke is so cool. I'm happy I was able to get these even though I paid a lot for them. I'd put silver on the same level as bronze but I was just tired of seeing Midnight Purple/Bronze together all the time.

I definitely used all my 'good luck' when I found it. No HICAS, one owner, etc. To a lot of people that's not a big deal but it's oddly perfect for me. The only things I have on the horizon right now are:

Downpipe
Exhaust
Radiator
Ganadors (getting mine shipped to me from the US)

That's more than likely all I'll end up doing besides maintenance. No one cares about the 'original' factor but to me it's super cool.

Sorry for the lack of updates/pictures.

My friend is coming up to Yokosuka for R's Day. We're going to spend a couple days here and then drive to the Hakone area and stay the night. We're going to wake up the morning of R's Day and drive to Fuji Speedway from there. I'm sure I'll have pictures before then.

Funny you asked: I didn't take the car.

My friend and I went to Daikoku on Friday since he was up here from Southern Japan and hadn't been in a while. My car is still making that shitty ear-piercing metallic noise. Unfortunately I think it's the fucking hubs. I never use Ichiba and the first time I do I get a shitty set.

So I went up the Mazda Turnpike and drove to Fuji Speedway in a fucking Cube.

So I have a request for you, from one particular person to another.

Since this is such a rare occasion to have such a well preserved, original car, I ask you to take some photographs, and not just of the exterior (which looks great, btw). For a few reasons..

1. for those of us who want to put a heavily modified/molested car back to original
2. for the history of the car
3. to show any idiosyncrasies that the car may have, that people may not know about, or happen to think of.

I think of it the way that the muscle car scene looks over old photos of cars from years past. We need these references made now so later on, after every s13 has been battered to shit, the people who really love these cars can bring them back to former glory.

If you'd like to tell me to go fuck my hat, I'd understand.

I've mentioned it before but the rear brakes seized up so my friend helped me order some refurbished OEM rears. They even painted them black. Finally got them on.

Today I'm taking my car to Mine's to get the fluids changed. I'm too fucking lazy to do it myself nowadays.

The same friend that helped me get the brakes also helped me snag some OEM rear valences. They came with all the hardware so all I have to do is get them painted. I'm going to get the Ganadors and valences done at the same time.

In other news...the Silvia has been sitting under a cover. I uncover it on nice days and start it up. It needs brake pads/rotors so I haven't driven it around the block in a while. Once I get the pads/rotors ordered I'll get the new stuff on and swap out the 'SE' wheels for the teardrops. I snagged yet ANOTHER set of blue SpecR seats for the Silvia. This time I'm keeping them.

Hello. I constantly debate whether or not to keep this going.

I haven't done much. I got the hatch fixed. I had the rear wiper/3rd brake light shaved at the same time. The Cobra Flex is on and I'm waiting on some GKTech braided lines to come in. I had some S14 K's brakes that I had painted with high-temp painted and it started to come off. I got some freshly powder-coated ones and those will be going on in the same session.

Once I get all of that sorted, I'm going to throw on the SLs and some smaller tires.

...oh and the wheels/suspension for the Silvia are here.

Dude. Yeah.

It's a conscious decision. Most suspension companies are outsourced to China anyway and the good ones (DG5/HKS) aren't worth the price to me if it's a gamble. I know Feal is a great coilover at a super good price. The valving is everything.

GKTech Japan would be great...if their website allowed me to use my PayPal (apparently based out of the US, didn't know it was different) for purchases in Japan.

It's a trip, man.

TheRealSy90

What about GpSports G-Master etc. would be a gamble? IMO they're one of the best you can get. Like, are all s-chassis owners in Japan having to import parts from abroad? I just find it weird that aftermarket stuff isn't more available there than it is here. Like for example Powervehicles is able to repair and upgrade cars at their facility very quickly etc. Or maybe they just really have that much stuff on hand already, idk.

I mean it's entirely possible they have connections. A friend of mine that works on base has such a nice, modest S14 that he was approached by GP Sports with an offer to do work on his car. The Japanese are all about networking, it seems like. PowerVehicles would be a good entity to work with.

I guess it's just preference. I don't want to take the gamble on parts anymore. The KTS aren't great by any stretch of the imagination. Kind of resigned to sticking to what I know. The issue isn't really availability, it's price and quality that don't work for me.

Write to more prominent names in this community about it. Get them to write an uplifting IG story about it...or maybe put up your own IG post misrepresenting things.

Nothing that comes out of Instagram is going to make me give a shit. I only know about these instances because a few people have sent me screenshots with your IG stuff in it. I forgot today was 02FEB...so Happy Nissan Day!

I went on a cruise with a buddy from Yokosuka. There's a nice windy road that leads out to the coast. He came over to my house (the same day I got the Silvia lowered) and replaced his suspension with new coilovers AND threw on a nice blast pipe. Needless to say, he enjoyed the curves more than I did in my NA, automatic car.

The Silvia drives great, though. I really should get another set of Feal 441+ for the 180SX. I'm sure I'll get there. The Silvia needs an alignment, some suspension tweaks, and rolled rear fenders. I think it looks halfway decent for now.

Completely different tastes in style.

Lived in Japan for 3 years and 90% of the parts on my car are from there. The other 10% are either better quality parts or cheaper. Pbm cobra dp, gktech bits, enthaply tune, etc.

Auctions have quality parts, don’t slack there. Gather as much as you can according to your end goal unless you plan on staying there for the rest of your life. I wish I had more time to collect and have fun there. Also don’t miss the big events. Huge discounts on parts there but you’ll need to have the yen on you.

Since you’re not tracking the car, how come you didn’t get bags? I bought the g-master pros before I left. Soild coil but for normal driving I would not recommend it.

Your 180 looks good though. I’d recommend you try a drift day, maybe at Fuji. It’s just a big skid pad which is perfect for learning. Don’t try the touge as it’s not newbie friendly, have had many friends destroy their cars there.

Either way, look forward to the progress!

I use YAJ a lot via my friends. It helps a ton. I've gone to R's Meeting, TAS, and another Nissan show out in Chiba. Prices aren't astronimically better at these events anymore. Kind of takes the piss out of it.

I don't want to commit to bags yet. I actually threw the Feals on the Silvia even though my plan was to swap out the KTS on the 180SX. I drove the Silvia all weekend and I have to say: KTS just sucks. I'm used to coils being 'jarring' but the Feals feel like OEM suspension to me at this point lol.

I've been to Fuji. I don't think sliding the car is in the future. It's too clean and original to chance it even a little. Besides, I'm always on the cusp of selling it so I have to maintain it lol.

xpinoyxmk
02-07-2019, 03:21 PM
I had to swap all of my suspension for JCI once, its not that bad but Yokota has a nice hobby shop so it was easy.

TAS has a little discount usually but one I went to was the Drift Tengoku 50th anniversary, i think, event in Odaiba. Everything was 10-50% off parts and aero.

Theres plenty of cars just as clean as yours out at events, plus most people will let you ride along too which is awesome for learning. Could also build connections with locals too if your nihongo is good enough.

The jury is out on this one. My experience is this:

Get referred to a shop where prices are comparable to a body shop (amazing work) I used to use in CA. Leave the car there all week. When I pick it up everything looks great...aaaaand a couple months later it looks like shit.

Some of the more famous shops out here will do bodywork as well but the price is super high compared to the US. I haven't tried them yet, but I'm wondering if their prices are high because they actually do a good job.

I'd at least mention something to the shop you went to about the longevity of their job. They may have unknowingly made a mistake.

Overall though, with how different the two markets and cultures are, its hard to compare labor in japan to labor in US.

My IG is private and I'm not a big fan of having my shit posted by someone else, but the dude was genuinely nice and offered to take the pictures down. I didn't want to be a dick (there are no signs on my car that say 'no photos' afterall) so I didn't ask him to delete them.

I'm starting to think I'm not really a '180SX guy'. I get so much more satisfaction out of the Silvia. After getting some pictures during hanami (cherry blossom bloom) I think I'm going to convert the 180SX back to stock. I'll sell the hubs, put the 4lug OEM Type X wheels on, take my Nardi and all the interior shit out and just store it as-is. I didn't buy it to profit from it, but I really believe that if I leave it in OEM configuration and park it the value will go up.

I finally took my ass to KTS for an alignment. Coils are still binding in the front so when Spring fully hits here I have to sort that out. Wheels still hit in the front. I was hitting an on-ramp near KTS (wheels turned) and LUCKILY the rubber hit the fender (metal) and simply scuffed it without fucking it up. I don't want to drop down to 8J+0 but if this car is meant to be a reasonably low, driveable daily that might be in the near future.

Other than that, I'd really like to source a 5speed, and (at the suggestion of a knowledgeable friend) throw some cams/headers on the CA to give it a little pep in its step. I already have some old HKS headers I had purchased for my previous blue/grey car. Glad I kept them.

https://i.imgur.com/O7NHLT5.jpg

As for the 180, I still want to drop a tire size up front and get the rear pods re-aligned. My goal is to get some good pictures for the sakura bloom and then either revert the 180 to stock or just leave it alone. Guess we'll see.

That being said, before the 180SX sold, I purchased an NA/auto S15. AJ4 with B-Package (blue interior) and one owner. Shortly thereafter the 180SX DID sell for EXACTLY my asking price...fuck me, right? Luckily a good friend of mine was looking to get into cars and had already told me how much he liked the AJ4 S15. I sold it to him for exactly what I paid. I must have used up all my good karma for 2019 because I managed to (after carefully calculating) not lose any money during this whole ordeal.

Yeah, man. BN5. According to GTRegistry, there were only 48 cars in the configuration mine came in. I know no one else cares, but it's cool to me. The color plays on the S13 Silvia's 'seafoam' and I really like it. Kind of suits that whole 80's 'I-do-cocaine-while-wearing-a-white-suit-in-Miami' vibe I like so much.

Hopefully I can get my car inspection done this week and get the suspension installed. I got HKS Hipermax coils and Cusco RUCA (Cusco passes Japanese inspection) to start off with. I also have a couple odds & ends I've been hoarding for this car (OEM 'duckbill' trunk lip, OEM sides, etc.). I've been driving it around town and it's amazing how different this car feels. I've tried to tell myself it's just my mind playing tricks, we'll see if it wears off. All the bad shit I said about the S15 (when I had a Spec S) Is nonexistent in the Spec R..but maybe that's just because this car appears to have been religiously maintained.

I'm sending a fucked up set of LMGT4s off to CA to get refinished. Hopefully before they come back I can have everything else sorted. The silver LMGT4s have tires on them already so I'll probably end up using them as-is as opposed to using the TE37SLs. I really want to unbox the SLs soon, though.

Pictures to follow if I get to installing parts this weekend...

Thoroughly jealous. I recently visited Kadena AFB in Okinawa and seeing all the cool cars everyone drives blew my mind. Driving around base, seeing supras at the maintenance hangers, a pack of silvia's at the post office, jzx's everywhere, and too many skylines to count. Luck of the draw I guess, I've been at the same stateside base for 4 years now with no orders coming in the foreseeable future.

I skip around a lot.

I got the HKS coils in and went to KTS for an alignment. I seriously can't say enough good things about this suspension. The car feels great. I've got a little bit of binding in the rear so I need to fuck with the preload but the car feels awesome on the road. I'm going to take almost all camber out in the rear once I roll the rear fenders. I have my tires chosen, but I'm trying to wait until I sell a couple things on the forum before I buy new tires.

I held off on getting my 'project' LMGT4s redone since I might be moving. I'm still torn between getting them done a custom color or going for white. I have bronze and silver so white would be the last color to say I've got all the 17" colors...besides finding Omori 17" wheels one day...

Still can't decide what to use. The bronze wheels are more of a trophy at this point. No one wants to pay what they're worth and I'm alright with that. I think that if I sold them for less because I was seeing dollar signs, I'd regret it. I thought someone was going to buy these but they backed out last minute. I was hoping to get some CE28SLs with the bronze wheels funds.

*brightness increased on pictures due to shitty weather.
* why is there a line through the top parts of the wheels...

https://i.imgur.com/TsIAYK4.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/Zoxg5wv.jpg

I also got the connectors for my steering wheel so I finally have a horn button again. For some reason the SRS resistor isn't doing what it needs to do and I have a flashing SRS light. Any input? I disconnected the battery for about 20min and still nothing.

https://i.imgur.com/JhWu5c5.jpg

I recently got the OEM sideskirts painted and installed. Looks a little weird to me but I'm getting used to it. I don't like the OEM rear pods, and although I want an aero front bar I think it will look lame without an intercooler tucked behind it.

https://i.imgur.com/Uck3biP.jpg

Speaking of intercoolers, I've been all over the board since I got to Japan as far as my goals. Get a nice, clean car and try to squeeze some more power out of it or just 'steal the base' by buying up clean examples while I still can. I've obviously leaned towards the latter. Suspension, maintenance, and cleaning.

I always knew 'car people' that thought they had to sell their cars as a sign of maturity or something. I ran into this a lot in the US whenever I'd pick up another S13 because it was always someone selling the car to 'move on' or 'get an adult car'. I remember buying my S14 fron a guy that was about my age currently, and he was selling it to get a G37 because he said it would look more 'professional'.

I think it's all in the styling. My cars are boring to most people, but I feel like people who really know Nissan cars will notice that it's:
- low enough to look alright, but not stupidly low
- got ill-fitting wheels, but doesn't cross the line into being ridiculous
- using OEM parts

When I was installing the coilovers on my car, a guy in his 40s walked over to my driveway. I've lived in my house close to 3yrs and never met this person. He brought me some old school Nissan brochures for Laurels, Gazelles, and of course Silvias. He told me he'd noticed all the S-Chassis cars I'd had, that he works at the Nissan factory in Oppama, and he wanted me to have these brochures as a gift...and that's the type of thing that makes me feel good about what I'm doing. I'd like to think that some dude with a clapped-out/fuccboi-spec car that would get 'all the IG likes' would've been ignored, but who knows. All I know is that the guy pointed out key things on my cars that typically only I notice, and it just felt great.

To recap, I had the '89 Silvia Q's and the '96 Type X before I decided to get an S15. Since I was on a budget but valued a clean body more than anything, I opted for a SpecS in AJ4 w/B-Package interior. When my 180SX sold for my asking price, I offered to sell the SpecS to a friend that had recently taken an interest in cars. I sold it to him for exactly what I paid, and used that money and the 180SX money to get the SpecR.

We've been waiting for his parts to come in, and this week the last things showed up: the tires. His car is going to be simple since it will be his first lowered car and first venture into this 'car shit' in general. Here's what he has so far:

HKS Hipermax GTIV (bought used, saved more money than I did)
Cusco RUCA
215/45R17 Dunlop Direzza DZ101
17X9+22 Gram Lights 57CR (Gun Blue)

We essentially copy & pasted the same shit from my SpecR. With the exception of front camber plates, we knew this would all fit and get the car sitting right...so why bother changing the formula?

https://i.imgur.com/rLxFR8h.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/fmDr4WR.jpg

We decided to use the weekend before his tires arrived to get the suspension bits on. we dialed in the car and threw my OEM SpecR wheels on. He had purchased some 17x8+22 Buddy Club P1s to use while his Gram Lights were being produced but unfortunately they came with gigantic fucking snow tires so they wouldn't fit after the suspension install.

He knew I had purchased some BNIB S15 headlights and offered me the P1s in trade. When I got the SpecR it came with (clean) HID headlights so I no longer needed these BNIB ones...and to save myself from having to deal with the fucking morons in the marketplace, I agreed.

https://i.imgur.com/Z8hHFUB.jpg

With the suspension somewhat evened out and the new headlights on, the car was looking like it rolled off the lot back in 2000. The OEM 'ducktail' is super underrated. I have one hanging around for my car. After seeing the side profile of his car lowered w/this wing I really want to get mine on...

Tires came in and we went to my local tire shop to get them mounted on the Gram Lights.

https://i.imgur.com/1Z5eOyi.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/6C6AUCY.jpg

Got the wheels mounted, headed back to my house, and dialed in the suspension. We still need to roll his rear fenders, so when that's done I'll post the finished product.

When it comes to my car, not much has changed. After HKS USA and HKS Japan told me there were no compatible camber plate for my car, I kind of put it on the back burner. I ended up visiting N-Stage to get the AC checked on my S13 and Nabe-san told me that was weird. He called HKS and had front camber plates ordered within minutes.

Hard to tell here due to lighting, but it's a thousand times better.

https://i.imgur.com/3RXOUKz.jpg

I also got lucky with an OEM aero bumper. The bumper had EVERYTHING still on it. The previous owner had cut the bumper to fit a front mount, but did a super shitty job.

https://i.imgur.com/nEpdahR.png

https://i.imgur.com/updNTDf.png

https://i.imgur.com/LBw9SY1.png

As soon as the bumper came in, I started working on smoothing it out. Here's what the (almost) finished product looks like:

https://i.imgur.com/bRZbckE.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/4d98cMN.jpg

Even though the fog light bracket isn't connected on the bottom, it still helps to hold the foglight when the plastic grille is inserted. Three points of contact still exist, and pairing it with the bracket it's good enough to hold. I wish I didn't care about the fog lights, because I'd just as soon cut these brackets out entirely...

If you know me (via the forum, duh) by now you know that I don't really care to modify my cars a ton. I wanted to just get the car to sit right, and maybe upgrade the radiator and open up the exhaust more. Still waiting on the latter, but I told myself enough bullshit to justify this:

https://i.imgur.com/kDG0jyD.jpg

BNIB Yashio Radiator. When I compared prices this was still the best deal, and it came with the sticker & instructions.

I've had the V2 Temp Gauge for a long time. It will eventually make its way into the S15. Everyone that knows me knows I've been looking for a BNIB V1 for the S13. I like how they would parallel each other: old Silvia gets V1 and new Silvia gets V2.

https://i.imgur.com/bpIiEpB.jpg

Funny story: I had both of these ChoroQ toys before I ever had the actual cars. The S15 toy is the SAME blue that my car is. Foreshadowing...

...and I'm still contemplating putting these NS5Rs on. I'm boring. I like silver wheels on my cars and I don't know why...

https://i.imgur.com/uiXraeZ.jpg

My friend is coming down for R's Meeting this year. Beyond getting some brake pads/rotors, the car will be the same until I figure some things out.

A lot has happened since my last post. I'll try to sum it up:

Cars are still the same. I don't have any gnarly plans for them, although the S13s are constantly a few beers away from the chopping block. I've started to look into what it would take to ship my 240SX from CA to Yokohama. I think that will be the deciding factor on whether or not I sell it in the US or bring it over. To be honest, the prospect of selling both S13s to fund a second S15 is very enticing. Obviously if money and space weren't a factor I'd keep all of my cars, but if I enroll in college (while working) and things keep going the way they're going, it's better to downsize and maybe finally squeeze an NSX into my life. Who knows.

S15 is still great. Due for an alignment, wheel change, aero bumper, and downpipe/exhaust install.

S13 AC and passenger's window are still broken. Window motor in-hand, AC system might need a full upgrade. Possibly reverting car back to OEM suspension/teardrops.

Moved into new house.

Started new job.

Went to Daikoku on Sunday for the first time with my father in-law.

~ Happy New Year from Japan ~

It's new years eve, and everyone is out washing their cars and tidying up to prepare for the New Year. So am I.

I was sitting in my car this morning, and just felt good to still be here. Navy admin people FUCKING SUCK, if you're in the Navy, NCs and YNs specifically. It's just crazy to reflect on the headspace I was in about 2 months ago and how it's night and day to how I'm feeling lately. Happy to be here. Happy to have removed a fair chunk of dead weight from my life, and happier for who/what's left.

https://i.imgur.com/qjiWV73.jpg

Got the red car on the road via insurance and some temp plates. I'm 100% certain an old man owned this car judging by the taste in audio/navigation equipment and the fact that he appears to have used Locktite on the fucking shift knob. Slowly removing all unnecessary audio/electronic equipment and just looking over the car.

A friend of mine that's still in the Navy is due to rotate back to the US. I handed him the key to the red car, we met up with the dude that bought my Type-X, and we all drove to Daikoku on Sunday morning. It was nice to get out and cruise during the day.

https://i.imgur.com/ct6b5Cj.jpg

The long process to get a waiver for a third car (you're only allowed to register 2) is about to start. I haven't decided if I'm going to full-stop things with the red car or just enjoy myself...we'll see how it goes. I'm a little torn when it comes to deciding which car gets the aero bumper. I'd like to buy another, but the prices are up and they don't come up often. The blue car is the 'cleaner' car and the aero bumper I have was already notched for a front mount...and if either one of these cars gets any motor work it will be the red car. Maybe that's my answer

For anyone that reads this, I'm going to get better about taking pictures. I'll be off IG shortly and want to use this thread more. I like how it's 'off the grid' compared to Facebook and IG.

After holding out for what seems like forever, I finally sold my S13s.

The fastback I had stored in military storage for almost 4yrs sold to someone in CA, and I finally let a friend here in Japan buy my S13 Silvia. He was slated to move back to CA and he took the car with him. I think they'll both 'live good lives' with their new owners. I was saving them for a day when I could be an old man taking his 'classic' cars out on the weekend, but in the meantime they were taking up space and not being used. Maybe I'm growing up. Who knows. I had planned to sell most of the parts I had accumulated for the S13s, but I've decided to keep them for a rainy day. Maybe one day I'll get another, but in the meantime these parts are just going up in value.

For the record, I got my asking price in both instances. If you have clean, unmolested cars, do not let any manner of cunt try to fuck you out of you car's worth. I didn't even have to wait long to find buyers that were willing to pay for clean cars.

With the S13s sold, I helped my Mom get this:

https://i.imgur.com/QMD5zI1.jpg

We worked out a deal to where she gets a new, warrantied car for daily use and I get to essentially take over whenever I come back to the US. I was stoked to help my Mom out and get a Hakone car before they 'went away'. I've said it a thousand times, but I don't care about the HP figures or the rumors surrounding the next iteration of this car. Pair that with this rad color and all the tech gadgets, and I was sold.

On the Japan side of things, I was able to rent another parking space near my house and route a request to have 3 vehicles in my name. When you're in Japan and affiliated with a military base, you're limited to only two cars per household...and that's only if you're married and your home can accommodate two parked cars. I'm not in the military anymore, but I'm still subject to the base rules and processes.

The BN5 car, like most cars I own, is treated like an ornament. I've gathered a ton of wheels with the help of a close friend, and I decided to finally use a set I'd always wanted and never thought I'd own.

Car is on an uneven surface, and sits lower than it appears here. I even bought the Nismo smoked/clear sidemarkers although I've always thought smoked/clear lights are terrible. I think they look okay, but that's probably due to the OEM-spec fluting(?) they have.

I was able to get the AJ4 car registered. I was given an opportunity to sell the car, and after wrestling with the idea for about a week, decided to keep it. I dropped it off at local body shop, got the OEM side skirts painted and mounted, and dropped the car on HKS Hipermax IV SPs. They are marginally more comfortable than the GTs on the blue car, as they're intended to be. Funny, if ANY car gets taken to a track event, it will be the red car so I'll probably have to swap the suspension over at some point. With the current lockdown, there's no rush.

I decided the AVS were a nice departure from the TEs/LMs I usually use. It's so funny when I look at the wheels I've sourced over the years. I have a set from Russia and the AVS came from Germany..all Japanese wheels. The places you buy from/sell to when this is your hobby is gnarly...

I'd like to get both cars on the same 'level' before I dig a little deeper into the AJ4 car. I used my old tires from the silver LMGT4s on the AVS, but I'd like to get another set of the Nittos for the red car too. Ideally, they would both receive the following:

Refurbished Front/Rear Brakes
Brake Pads/Rotors
GKTech Stainless Lines
New Subframe Bushings
New Slave Cylinders
New OEM Coilpacks/Spark Plugs
Nismo Arms
New Turbo/Exhaust Manifold Gaskets
PBM Cobra Flex Downpipe

Some of these things are already done. Beyond that, the AJ4 car would get the Yashio Radiator and a few other things I've been contemplating.

I'm in no rush. I constantly catch shit for not driving my cars or going to events. With this forced lockdown, I'd be lying if I said I didn't regret doing more when I was able to, but I also don't mind being 'more ready' when that time finally comes. Besides lowering the cars and doing things that would accommodate the 'GTR-spec' wheels I like to run, I want to keep the cars as close to 'refreshed stock' as possible. When I get the red car to an event, I want to give it a go at close to stock to get a feel for it and then make a roadmap from there. Exhaust, cooling, and brakes are the only areas I want to focus on before that time comes. Making more power will always be an option and I'm not in a hurry to go down that rabbit hole. I've been stuck on SChassis cars for a long time now, and making more power has never been by main objective anyway.

Cute wing on your Toyota

wow ok wow. not cool but wow.

I'm moving to Nagasaki area...but I will have more space and two small garages to store (maybe work on...?) the cars in a covered, closed environment. I am (hopefully) driving up to Hakone on Sunday to say goodbye to the turnpike. I know there are some great scenic roads in Kyushu, but I am going to miss Hakone when I leave the area.

...I also finally got that Tomei titanium goodness with the help of a friend. I am in love with this shit. Pictures soon.

I'm on the fence myself on ordering the Tomei Ti exhaust for my s13. I just want it to be super loud lol.

The noise is perfect. I didn't want to be too obnoxious in my neighbourhood (although I enjoy loud cars) but I wanted it to sound great. I'm running the PBM Cobra Flex downpipe, stock cat (for now), and then the Expreme. The sound is 'muted' a little due to Tomei adding a resonator on the newer Expremes but the sound is primetime lol. When I figure out how to upload a video to my YouTube I'll get a sound clip.

I wonder what it would sound like if you removed your cat for the Tomei Ti test pipe.

We went on a trip to Hakone last weekend. One of my friends was headed back to the US and wanted to see the turnpike again before he left.

We hit the coast pretty early and drove up. I suck at taking pics.

A buddy of mine snapped this pic at the Anest Iwata Sky Lounge, the first parking area you hit on the way up.

We took a route around Lake Ashi and headed towards Mt. Mikuni. I need a new slave cylinder badly. The squeal was real.

My friend's EV1 Lightning Yellow SpecR. Deal of the century, and an even better deal on the R33 whees he recently purchased.

We headed down a route that none of us had ever taken and ended up driving through a pampas grass field. I forget the name of the area, but the road was surrounded on either side by pampas grass that Jin Sakai could hide in for days.

I recently took a new job in Kyushu, and posted the red car for sale again.

Unfortunately, even with links to similar spec'd cars included in my post, people are still talking shit on the price. That's fine by me. I don't know why people don't understand that 'testing waters' means I am in no rush to sell my shit or lose my ass on a car I recently bought, did maintenance on, and installed suspension bits on. Cats out here are so jaded because 3yrs ago they heard of a sister's cousin's friend scoring a car with 150,000KM+ and a repair history for $10k. Blows my mind.

I'm also tentatively in the market for something else. I will have more parking where I'm headed and had I known I would get this job, I would not have sold my two-tone. I considered and NSX, then another S13 Silvia, then a Porsche, then the S13 Silvia again, and now an R32 is at the top of my list. If I seem all over the place it's because I am. I'm always torn between a departure from what I know or sticking with the same old shit. I guess we'll see.

How about a 99+spec FD? Are you still in the military? I've been looking at contracting jobs out that way but it's been fairly dry

They're still expensive as well.

I'm out now. I was able to get a gig on base and avoid returning to CA. I'm in no rush to get back.

Those pics look pretty good to me. Very nice, TY for sharing.
It is nice seeing S15s in OEM colors other than white and silver
