I've always wanted a 2-tone since I got into 240's..especially this color. I don't know what it is, but CG5 Creamy Yellow was a bucket list one for me. This car specifically I've known about for a very long time and when the opportunity to pick it up presented itself, I jump on it sight unseen while still living in Germany back in June of last year.

Fast forward to December when I finally came home, I finally got to take it for a spin. It was dirty and grimy from sitting for 6 months so I took a good amount of time to go through the car to clean and wash it down.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4128/35304956660_de55de85d8_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/VMM8Bj)
Next thing I noticed was smoke coming from the hood and oil burning. I checked it out and realized that the V/C was leaking. Too easy, I'll just tighten the bolts down, good to go. Not with my luck, someone had over tightened the shit of of them and stripped out almost all the bolt holes. You know what time it is!!
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4255/35691904345_178da704e2_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/WnYkF8)
So with that, I starting going through all of the systems and making sure that everything worked properly..ya know..because it was going to be my DD until my cars showed up. Go to try the windshield washer...nothing. Oh boy was that fun. Seems the fluid was soo old that it has become gelatinous? :barf:

Like, how the fuck does that even happen? Either way, I got that sorted and started ordering parts for the front end since it clunks and just feels like absolute shit. Scored a deal on a Nardi for a hundo. Scooped up a hub and threw it on. Also found a BNIB set of half/half bumper lights from Japan since everyone here wants crazy amount of money for used, cracked ones.

By this time I'd locked down a job, gotten my cars from Gemany right before the new year, and closed on a new house in February!! Soo happy to have my own space after slumming it with the in-laws for like 2 months. All my stuff got delivered that weekend. Not too long afterwards I came across a deal that was WAAAAAY too good to pass up. More info in the next post, but i'll leave you with this teaser.

So I was perusing the local FB groups one day while at work, looking for parts, ya know, the usual. Came across this thing for a decent price; talked him down and got it for a steal.
If you've never had the opportunity to just tear into a car that you don't care about, you should try it. Just..feels rewarding.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4212/35691922235_bfe0b7a493_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/WnYqZz)
Threw it up on jack stands and starting stripping it down. I figured I could part the car and make most if not all my money back and still have all the important stuff I wanted in the first place.

3 weeks later and a few dollars, it was on it's way.

haha. yeah, i honestly thought it was a condom stuffed in there when i was trying to fish out the plug with a coat hanger.
The brown, it kind of works for me if its in great condition. I got the car and it has no cracks in the dash, plastic are in great condition. That all ended about 2 months ago with the wild swings in temperature we've been having. 3 cracks in 1 day..super pissed. If its a complete interior, I may be interested; 240s are getting hard to find in junkyards local to me..I know of 1, and its a hatch.

Was this car local to raleigh? I used to cruise into work and see this or a similar unmolested 2t banana pretty often on capital blvd.

Car was picked up from the original owner by my friend back in the day and then he sold it to his brother who I'm pretty sure went to UNC based on the sticker in the back window. The buddy I got it from lives over in Wilson. It very possible its one in the same.

Oh man, so jealous of that color combo. Can't wait to see where this build goes, making me want to try to find another two tone myself...

Haven't been much of any updates. I've been looking for some odds and ends and piecing together the rest of the Z-brakes. Kid went to sleep pretty early last night so I had a little extra time to mess around in the garage. Started tackling the motor I pulled from the part out.
I knew going into it that quite a few of these parts would not be staying on the motor so I might as well remove them. Overall its in fairly decent shape....however, I was very suspect of the motor when I learned that the PO tried pushing 1000cc Injectors on a stock ECU and turbo :picardfp:
Check out CYL 2&3 exhaust ports..wet from fuel still. Also, No turbo outlet gasket, and no thermostat..come one now! He was impressively bad at using gasket maker so I've been planning on resealing the motor.

Know what I love more than people who don't know what they're doing? People who over torque bolts. Never mind that one flywheel bolt was missing, but I'm fairly sure 7 of the 8 bolt holes are now stripped. Fuck that guy.

Unfortunately. After the demise of Carolina Nissans; the local scene seems to have gone down hill pretty quick. A lot of the guys have, for lack of a better term, grown up and/or moved on. This is probably the last one for me as well because I feel like I have some unfinished business from my last coupe.

Hey, Ebay shit is cool for some people, and works for certain things.... just not how I do business though. I sat back and mulled over the motor and have come to the realization that even though I may have basically gotten it "for free", its going to end up being a build. If I crack open the motor, which I'd be a fool not to at this point, there's a 99% chance I'll find some more sketch shit. That being said, throwing a couple grand at is definitely on the table; or the motor itself will just become some man cave furniture.

Unrelated update. Gentleman flew in from Texas on Monday evening to look at the car. After some good conversation and a couple beers, we agreed on a price for the wagon. I loaded it with all the parts and the transport showed up this afternoon. It's a sad day to see it go, but he's a real enthusiast and it's going to a good home.
So what's this all mean? It opens up a rather large budget now for the 240.

Luckily the Photobucket debacle happened early on in this thread. Switched over to a new host, fixed the thread.
Little update though. Since I had some cash burning a hole in my pocket from selling the wagon, I treated the ole' girl to some suspension. Coils, rear arms, and bushings are ordered. Pretty back logged so I doubt any of it will be in before I head to my AT next week. Working on getting the last of the rear brakes and mulling over some 5-lug wheel options.
Since I was headed down memory lane transferring my pictures over, I figured I'd share my last coupe with you guys. This was the culmination of 5 years of beginning to rebuild this car from an empty shell as a broke ass 19yr old college kid. Some may have seen it, I also think I saw the shell for sale on here not too long ago; thought about buying it back for the hell of it. Can't believe I parted it out:facepalm:

Lots of packages came while I was gone!! Lots of things have happened as well. The wife knows I've been looking for a new daily. While I was away, she found this and pretty much bought it for me. Shout out to her, Wife of the Year status for finding me a RWD one; and, for a hella good price too. Now I'm just waiting on the title to come from the P/O's bank so I can register it.
Got 1 or 2 more things to pick up; and all this can start going in. I wanted to wait on doing the 5-Lugs, but now that I'll have more than enough time, I'll probably just push forward with it.
Honest opinions on the Villains output shafts to convert over to Z33 axles??

Finally an update worth posting. Now that I got my new DD, i've been able to focus on the coupe a little more.
My front end was suuuper lose and I knew it was worn out; i'm glad I dealt with this deathtrap when I did. The balljoint practically fell apart when I took them out, bend tie-rods..etc etc. Looked to be original equipment..so this is MUCH better.

Moved to the back and pulled the subframe out. Cleaned up nicely, took the control arms and knuckles and installed new bushings and balljoints there as well. The subframe bushings are not in terrible shape honestly..but that's all I've got left to tackle before putting the rear end back together.

Next project is starting to flow in as well. I'm still on the fence if I want to go with over fenders or not..I just don't think I can justify the outrageous prices of a sheet metal front end right now. My buddy Matt came in clutch with an awesome deal on mint corners that was too good to pass up.

Car got that Carolina Squat right now until I get the front situated tonight. Not insanely low, but more than enough for the crap-tastic roads around here. Headed to the shop for an alignment and inspection tomorrow. Also, spur of the moment FB marketplace find; ended up scoring a fresh piggy lip for cheeeeeap. No cracks and has the mounting brackets..pretty exciting, not going to lie..zenkis look like ass without them.

Not too much excitement going on right now. I've been hitting the school work pretty hard and its leaving me with little time to do any major work to the car. I did finally replace all the bulbs in my dash buttons with LEDs since none of the lit up to begin with. Dug this key-ring light out of a box of old parts and wired it in too. I like it, just need to pop open my spare HVAC control and do the same to finish it off.

Thought I was getting a good deal on these dual projectors from a guy who was in a pinch and parting one of his projects. Well fuck me if he didn't try to scam me. Sent me a box full of junk. New-ish headlight brackets, and that's about the only thing worth keeping.
Driver's housing is split from top to bottom around the low beam projector, pass. side is obviously missing the inside mount, high beam projector is a jacked up, and the corner light screw mounts are broken in half on each side.
Soooo yeah, that's what I'm dealing with right now.:picardfp:

I also got rid of the annoying 3" exhaust this thing came with. Traded it for a stock unit. This is the first time I've had a 240 with a stock exhaust so please tell me, am I wrong in thinking it looks waaaaaay too close to the toe arm? I can't even get more then a pinky-tip between them and i'm worried about heat /contact. The hanger bushings are in good shape but since its supposed to be a temporary thing, I don't want it messing anything else up.

Been slacking on this hard core. Holidays, bought a new car, school, and now I'm about to move halfway across the country to Colorado next week. Done a few things, but mainly been working on the only other running S13 in town.
Spent a few nights shaving the caliper faces, stripping the old brush on paint, and rebuilding them. Picking up a set of s14se off my friend so I can do the 5-lugs/Z brakes. Also bought the last item I wanted for my 5spd swap. That'll all have to wait until we get settled in.

So, a simple HG change and ARP studs to prep it for turbo then turned into a motor swap and a half. motor was pissing coolant out of an empty exhaust stud. Excellent job extracting this stud; the dude charged him $50, and knowingly fucked it up because it was packed with JB weld. That stuff turns to putty with the coolant and heat.

Did some other things here and there like fixing some wiring, gauges, aligning the car, fixing power steering, etc etc etc....basically undoing some of the hacked up shit on this car performed by a local shop from a dual cam swap. Motor fired up first crank and sounds incredibly healthy for a basically an unknown buy.
That'll be it for a short time until we get the house sold here. I've got something special coming in the mail right now and hope it shows up before I leave next weekend.

Secured. Tires are meh, but they'll hold me over for a short while until I can find some nice wheels or build a set of 3pc if I can find ones I like. Probably slap some new tires on them since the kid liked to do burn outs with his open and fried the one side.

I just have to buy ball joints and bushings for the S14 arms as well as a new set of tie rods. Also scooped up a worn out J30 vlsd to steal the 6 bolt output flanges for my shimmed Z32 rear end. I've yet to get off my ass to sent those flanges off to Villains for the Z33 conversion so it'll be nice to be able actually use the diff in the meantime.

Man, I can't get enough of this thread. I LOVE when people take on simple, well-thought-out S13 builds like this. Reminds me of a time when things were simpler. Your previous blue coupe gives me the same type of vibe- so cool! I am really into the stock exhaust swap as well oddly enough, lol.
I actually really like the look of the two tone with a simple drop on the factory hub caps. Oddly satisfying, haha. Keep up the good work and good luck with the move!

Then about 2.5mo and a different realtor later the day finally came! We had an offer on the house!! It was a cash deal, quick close, and went under contract that Monday. I immediately went house hunting and found a bangin' deal in the perfect neighborhood. They accepted the offer and went under contract Tuesday night.
This is where everything went to shit....like..worst possible time. Fountain had the worst hail storm in 20+ years. I woke up at a little before 2:30am to tennis and baseball hail hitting the house. Never had a chance. My stomach turned as I stood on the porch and watched everything in sight get obliterated for close to 2 hours. Every car parked outside was totaled, houses with holes in the roofs, etc. I'd already seen videos but never experienced it.

Safe to say, I was heart broken. I knew it'd be a giant pain in the ass to get taken care of. Luckily I borrowed my buddy's beater while he was on vacation. I was set to move the family in 2 weeks. I got some work to do, will do a small follow up in a bit.

Alrighty, took a week or so to get the garage cleared out enough to set it up how I wanted it for now. Ordered a few misc. pieces to finish up my project and get to work doing some small stuff while I wait.
Shout out to FRSport for shipping my parts to NC instead of CO and not responding to like 3 emails or picking up their phone after I'd placed the order...so there's that. Glad the new owner of the house was cool enough to hold on to the one package that got delivered by usps even though i have my mail being forwarded here.
Bought a new daily. Haven't owned one since high school, been itching to get a trail rig because there are hundreds of places to go out here. It was too good of a deal, 3" lift, leather interior, and the only one I could find without 200K+ miles that didn't cost an arm & leg.

Then I got to work on the z32 vlsd I've had sitting in a corner for the past decade. Only put about 1000 miles on it before I broke an axle and couldn't find another 5 bolt axle so I swapped it back out and there it sat since 2008. Glad I opened it up instead of just a drain/fill; fluid was disgusting.

Inner race of the outer joint didn't want to come out easily so opposed to forcing it, I just wiped out all the grease I could and hit it with a little brake cleaner to get what was left.

Flexed the joints to check for binding and get the grease where it needed to go. They're nice and quiet, no play, smooth movement. I've done jeep axles before, but this was a first and I'm pretty pleased with it. Hopefully they'll hold up a little better than the S13 tripod style axles that like to slip out on lowered cars. Those boot bands on the inner joint suuuuuuck though without the proper tool, I'm going to try and find some traditional CV boot straps.

Alright. Got the rear end back together for now; but I have to re-attack it once the e-brake stuff some in from Z1. Not a big deal since I'm going to be doing the 5spd swap so I'm going to be back up under the car again anyways.
Speaking of the 5spd swap. I was waiting for brake lines to show up so I broke out the crusty brake pedal and started to clean it up along with the clutch pedal. Apparently the clutch had been rattle canned because all the paint started coming out while cleaning it. So break them both down, clean, repaint, re-grease and reassemble. No one is going to see them, but its the little things that count. My OCD would also be out of control if I'd left it..so there's that.

So now that its sitting back on the ground I switched to a little bit of front prep. These bushing did not want to some out smoothly like the S13 arms did. I absolutely hate burning out bushings but there was waaaay too much material left to get my small wire wheel in there to clean the bores. Finally got it all taken care of but the arms are a little rough so i'm going to give them a splash of paint before I put the new ball joints and bushings in.

The semester started for school so things have been a little slow. Really was hoping to have this back out on the street by this weekend for my birthday buuuuut that's not going to happen.
Started to clean up the arms and surface rust was showing up so I stripped them. Ended up being slightly pitted underneath everything but they came out nice with a couple coats of etch and filler primer then paint.

Fucked up real good and found out I dont have 30mm calipers; definitely thought they were since I had measured them. Not a huge deal though because I sold the front rotors locally and scooped up one of the last stocks of discontinued Stoptech 26mm rotors. Figured I'd take this time to pull the front hub bearings apart and repack them.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1874/29376044157_235d6ba7f9_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/LKRUtX)
Luckily I did because there wasn't much grease left in them and the rest was pretty dried out. No signs of scoring or scorching and there was no play previously which is amazing since they came off the drift slut that had 285k on the odometer.

Ended up pulling the booster out since an old BMC leak had ruined the paint and it was rusting. Figured now was a good of time as any to swap out the pedals. Also ended up drilling out the firewall for the clutch pedal as well.
Guess you could say things are getting pretty serious; there's no going back now.

Have family in for the last few days, so not much has happened. Hopefully the next update will be back on the ground and driving. Got a friend stopping by after work today to lend a hand getting this trans in the car. I could do it myself but anyone who's done it by themselves understands.
Took care of the wiring for inhibitor and reverse lights. love how theres only 2 wires for the reverse lights and 2 for the speed sensor now. I was going to tear apart and merge the entire lower harness, make it all pretty and tucked but that's more work than I feel like doing to a sohc KA, haha. Also, It'd be a total waste of my braided mesh wire loom.

You know....shit like this wasn't a problem when I first started messing with 240s. I really fucking despise buying used parts from people. I've gotten burned twice now.
This was supposed to be a barely used OE part. Took me a hot minute to find a non-reman BM50. I was having trouble bleeding the brakes because i rushed and never bench bled it; never had an issue before but it happens. So I take it back out and noticed i was getting ZERO pressure through the rear port. I thought, hmmmmm....doesn't seem right at all. Well, this is the treasure hidden inside when I took the BMC apart.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1883/29825337947_05f555d6fd_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/MryDSB)
Excellent....that would be calcified dirt, old fluid, gunk, etc that was blocking the fluid from moving into the chamber from the secondary piston. Cleaned everything up, checked the seals for wear, and reassembled. Fluid shot half way across the garage on the first pump.
Oh yessss..shes a squirter..

Had to break out the vacuum bleeder for the fronts. once i started pulling fluid, they were able to bleed normally but pumping the pedal. Old fluid wasn't terrible but definitely needed a change either way.

Here I go dropping the ball. Kind of hit a brick wall and I can't figure out whats going on, then the last 2 weeks of school took up most of my time finishing my classes out for the semester.
Got everything wrapped up, looks great.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1908/43988452695_10625e7a4e_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2a27jsc)
I went to start it and the starter won't engage the flywheel. So, I put the batter on a tender, tossed in a new starter....same thing. I don't know whats going on. I bench tested the starter to make sure the bendex was extending completely, which it looked like it is. Then I broke down the starter and mounted the head so I could manually engage the lever. I get the engagement I need, awesome, at least the flywheel is the correct diameter and offset so I don't need to drop the trans to check it from the backside, etc etc.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1917/45315200062_c9e3b5e813_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2c3mfdN)
It requires the lever to be pulled much further than the solenoid's travel, so I tweaked the forks that move the collar on the bendex and tried again, no change. I'm at a loss right now. I'm going to try 1 more parts store starter just in case the one I got was faulty.
The next post with either include some sweet satisfactory shake down driving or that whole god damn motor getting thrown in a dumpster. If you happen to have any suggestions, I'm all ears at this point.

I know for sure the sohc and dohc starters work on the dual cam engine
but I'm NOT sure if a DOHC starter would work on a SOHC engine.
When you were at the parts store did you have them look up a 240sx starter? Maybe look into a d21 hardbody starter
Just some ideas :2c:

I sold my sohc setup the night after I pulled it, got a decent price for it. I also has a bit of cash laying around because I had been planning to buy some silvia front end parts. Now, I was on the hunt for a motorset and there was a front clip locally for an arguably good price since it had everything to drop and go.
This thing popped up Thursday before I left work, told the wife it was an impossibly good deal to pass on. I did some quick math on what it'd cost me to buy the missing parts and it definitely made sense. After checking it out, we tossed it in the jeep with probably another $1000 worth of parts in boxes, an engine stand and 2ton hoist.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1961/30617917757_d768e6de01_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/NDAQeK)
So..why such a good deal? A rebuilt SR with about 5k miles on it. After I sell off the parts I won't be using, this thing cost me a grand total of $0 as it sits. Needs a starter, fuel rail, 1 injector, clutch, manifold, and a transmission before I can toss it in the car. The wiring is meh, so I'm going to have to spend some time on it. The P/O was running a Power FC setup, 750s, and top mount that made about 350 wheel. Like I said, it needs a few things, but considering the front clip I was looking at costs 3k, I would have spent money on new gaskets, water pump and thermo, oil pump, etc etc and other maintenance items, etc etc..this is going to cost me 1/2 that.

I still want to build out my own and this one is a little worse for wear; guess I'll find out when I try to start it, ha. Started off swapping the sohc dash plug on there and de-pinned it so there's not a bunch of unused wire hanging off. I figured I'd just run through it from top to bottom.

Finished up fixing the harness. This ridiculous shit is what I've had to deal with. Not a single solder or crimped connection in this entire harness, just twisted wires....hilarious

Well..its certainly been a busy few months. Work kind of halted with the holidays, family drama, school work, and a home reno project. Car was on the back burner for the past 2 months.

Buddy needed to store his car while hes deployed. Hatch is filled with 1jz vvti/cd009 swap parts hes been mailing to the house. But, I had to swap the lower plenum on the SR since it was tapped for a MAP sensor. New one I picked up was filled with sludge, so a quick soak and slapped that on.

I pulled the steering rack apart to re-seal it. When I replaced my tie-rods last October, the boots were filled with fluid so I knew it needed it. Very smooth process, hope the gates seal kit works out, i was super careful to cover up the teeth on the steering shaft while sliding on the center seal..that's where they fuck up 99% of the time.

Then I decided to tackle the hot side and throw a bunch of new hardware and multi layer gaskets at it. I even found an old factory catch can to toss on. Will just need to clean ti up and hit it with a little paint.

I also grabbed a few things for the battery relocation. I wanted something presentable but low key even if its in the trunk. I have to swap in the fuel pump while I'm back there running the lines as well.

So, now that you're all up to speed, I've got a few things in route that will button up the drive train so I can get it in probably next weekend. I've still got to grab a radiator, intercooler, and turbo back exhaust stuff. We're in the final stretch and I hope to have it up and running for the start of summer.

Small update.
I was set to drop the drivetrain in this past weekend but I had to rush the wife to the ER early Sunday morning. Ended up needing emergency surgery to remove her gallbladder. She she was in bad shape and started to getting jaundice. Been taking primary on parental duties while shes recovering. Annnnnnnnyways.
Been working on some small odds and ends. Still trying to decide on HMIC or FMIC. I love the idea of a high mount but a nice GReddy kit hanging off the front always looks tough.
Got the rack back in. Cleaned the cross member, wrapped up the relocation. Really happy about the fit and finish. I just need to toss in the fuel pump and wire in the relay to stabilize the voltage.

Meanwhile, my quest for deals came in clutch. Shout out to THMotorsports for a KILLER price on a Hi-Power exhuast. I also scooped up a new PBM cobra flex from another member. Their shipping costs are ridiculous so it saved me like $100 on a new one. I need all the clearance I can get since i was just barely scraping my stock exhuast pulling into the garage.

- 21ft red, Knu Konceptz cable, 1/0ga. Have about 5ft left after making a starter power wire)
- 3ft black, Knu Konceptz cable, 1/0ga.
- 2 set-screw ring terminal, Knu Konceptz, 1/0ga. Perfect size for starter stud and the other for ground.
-----------$54?
- Stinger SGP901501 150A breaker, does 1/0ga or 4ga with a removable insert.
- Stinger Select SSVLBTP & SSVLBTN battery terminals, has 0/4/(2)8ga terminals.
- Stinger SHD21 distro block, (2)1/0ga and (4)4ga or 8ga with removable insert.
-----------$65?
- Orielly's battery box.
-----------$15?
Not too bad, a lot of it is preference and it could be done cheaper. Cable can hold like 400A of current. Max alternator output is 85A factory, 125A if using the Quest alternator; both below the breaker threshold including the added resistance over 12ft.

Wife started a new job that fits her school schedule; so now I get some uninterrupted wrench time on the weekends..yesssss!!!
Started off by tossing the new walbro in last night; soldered the harness in, re-flowed and added some new solder to all the hanger connections
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/46915681214_20d091cee0_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2etM8vq)
Power steering kit finally showed up after 2 months. Bolted in the down pipe in with a new O2 sensor and a fat to skinny conversion bung then got all the -an lines tightened up and oriented to my liking.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/33946115438_3600798cc2_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/THGHso)
Also popped some new plugs in it. The old ones had about 5k miles; motor look s to have been running very healthy..so fingers crossed it should be relatively trouble free.

TONS of ground clearance. I was initially worried because the Hi-Power is notorious for hanging low. New hanger bushings combined with the PBM cobra and utilizing the transmission mount exhaust bushing really helped, none of the exhaust piping is the lowest part of the car.

The only reservation I have is the gap between the downpipe and the floor pan, less than a 1/4" at most. There is no heat shield since that was part of the stock KA down pipe. I didn't get a real good look while tightening up the exhaust but I may have to come up with some heat protection so I don't roast my feet and destroy the undercoating from heat. Shouldn't be critical now that I'm living in such a dry climate; brake rotors still have no surface rust after being on the car for close to 6 months.
I really don't want to wrap the downpipe either, especially since that means pulling it back out

DEI's tunnel heat shield has worked real well for me. I've lined my trans tunnel and above the exhaust when it turns under the car. Keeps my feet from burning while lapping at a track day.

I hear ya. I wrapped mine when I first had it many years ago, but when I put the car together the second time I was too lazy. I haven't looked really closely at it to see if it has caused any issues. Definitely feel a bit of heat from it, but adding dynamat to the interior helped for sure.

I wanna say the DEI stuff is what I used (can't remember as its been a few years) but I also riveted mine to the floor cause I knew the adhesive wouldn't last forever. I did from where the firewall starts to radius down (behind the pedals) pretty much past the trans and it made a HUGE difference.

Haven't had much time to mess with the car. I've actually been collecting some parts for the other car in the garage.
I wrapped up repairing the last piece of jank wiring that was done to this harness.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/47998568368_70d3429d6a_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2g8td8A)
With that, however. That means I also relocated the ignitor inside the car so it will sit just below the HVAC matrix, nicely tucked up out of the way. Then, I tested every circuit for connectivity....le suck </3
But everything looks good! So, I started looming the parts of the harness I want to be presentable.

That last statement may sound confusing but after a lot of consideration, I'm going to just make a harness from scratch. I'm not 100% happy with this one due to various things that had to be fixed. The upside of it all; my friend has a super hack job harness on his drift car and I'm going to toss this one to him for just enough money to cover materials to build my new one. Win/Win.

Been a hot minute..been doing stupid stuff; preparing for my wife to have major surgery at the beginning of December and we have been tight on money because we're trying to be smart and pay off all our debt before next summer. /sigh, I know its for the better, but I fucking hate it.
So lets see, I wanted to have my car running before my birthday, ha..sike.
Friend was looking for a SR and I came out on top big time by trading him money, a KBD kit, and a complete KA swap. Figured a running/driving car was better than a garage ornament.
LOL, I hate myself.

With a little cash in my pocket, I scooped up this hotboi hero for cheap. Figured I'd toss the kit on it and slide it around. Well, that idea lasted about 24hrs. Car had the most rust that I've ever seen in a 240. Made my money back in and I have pretty much everything left that I actually wanted. Now the hunt for the shell is on.

Most recently, I've been helping my buddy sort his hatch out after he got screwed over by a local tweaker/shop owner. Dude conned, stole, and ripped off him and about 6 other people. Packed up and left the state without telling a single person around March. Its a miracle the thing even ran with how bad this harness is. No coolant lines to the turbo (plugged block ports) and loose oil line fittings..turbo is now blown too :picardfp:

Bumping the shit out of this I guess.
Wife is doing great, recovery was a little slower than we'd hoped but thankfully, all the cash I'd been saving up to cover this surgery was in vein. There was a ton of back and forth between the doctor and the insurance after they denied it 3 times. Somehow, luck or just the way it goes, the surgery was listed as a medical necessity which requires zero out of pocket through my insurance. *Angel music* I was able to use that money we'd been saving and pay off all our debt. LAWD, it was a great feeling because I gout our taxes in the same week. Big things are beginning to happen <3
We made some progress on my buddy's car. After some measurements, we decided his front end was just way past saving. He also got his motor delivered, no better thing to do than test fit everything while we're at it. Of course, now that means a tucked bay; so I started on that with him.

Right around the same time, freak snow storm got sent home early. Free snow-day on a Friday?, I'll take it. As the sky cleared up, I took the wife for a late lunch date. Apparently, it'd been way worse further north of town.
Caught some slush and pulled us in to a turning lane, bounced off a curb, broke a bunch of shit and shot us back into the intersection where I hit a truck.
Yo, side and curtain airbags? 1/5, don't recommend. 1st accident I've had and it totaled it..adjusted said it was way worse than it looked; who rear subframe had shifted.

So, that brings me to the last 2 weeks. After knocking out a ton of honey-do's I started buying up swap pieces; even found a screaming deal locally 2 weeks ago. Buddy went halvsies on it for the rear end setup.

Hey harness god, quick one for you. Were you able to find a set of push-type zip tie holders that go into the 5mm wide holes to hold the harnesses in place? These are all over the interior, truck and some in the engine bay.

Whoa, idk about harness god. But, you're looking for push mount, releasable nylon wire ties. They'll come a ton of different sizes. Typically when they refer to hold size, it's the diameter to which the legs will expand. If there are any technical drawings, you should see measurements.

Motor showed up, not as clean as I'd hoped, but it's not missing anything. I don't think it was compression tested, so I got to rig that up later. Kind of disappointed with the lack of communication from JDM of San Diego. Looks like it got pulled out of the shipping container and had the shipping label slapped on it without ever being looked at. VVTi solenoid was broken and the ignitor was cut off for some reason? Luckily, there are a wealth of jzx100/110 swaps locally so parts are easy to come by. I already have the replacement solenoid and sending my computer off to have the immobilizer flashed out this afternoon.
I'm going to need to dive in to the motor deeper than I was hoping to and replace some "while you're in there" items; front main seal for sure with a lot of build up on the timing cover behind the crank pulley. Going to need a lot of cleaning with the amount of oxidation I've seen but it'll be a better product in the end, so I'm not mad about it.
Didn't get a chance to put it up on the engine stand though. I need to take some measurements of the auto bell housing vs the CD to make a decision on a cut or no-cut kit. I feel it may not even matter since the trans will hang down low no matter what, but i don't want to beat the shit out of the trans tunnel more than I have to.

Finally started tearing in to it this weekend. Everything is in really good condition. Just going through and cataloging what I want to replace, bypass, and upgrade. Should have have the block cleaned up and painted in the next couple days.

I guess I'll start tackling everything that hangs off it so I can get it in ASAP. Got more than enough stuff to keep me busy at night this week. Also ordered my adapter kit for the CD. Did quite a bit of measurements for the a340 vs CD. Decided for the sake of my firewall and more importantly ground clearance, cut kit for for me. Really wanted to retain the external slave but an extra inch is worth it.
That's what she said..

Busy couple weeks, back on it this weekend though.
After measuring my bell-housings , I found I was going to gain back well over an inch of ground clearance using the auto bell-housing. As much as it pains me to convert to an internal slave the benefits of not having the trans hang down soo low are totally worth it. Ordered that adapter kit, slave and clutch. I also grabbed a banjo fitting for the master cylinder, some -3 conversion fittings, and bleeder fittings; going to have to test fit and measure for a clutch line so I don't make one too long or too short as well as a mounting solution for a remote bleeder.
Pulled off the crank pulley to check the front main more than anything since I have some build up around the pulley, its as dry as a can be.

I'm thinking the oil pressure release bolt has a super minor leak? Cant remove it without pulling off the waterpump, which requires pulling off the timing belt....both things I don't feel like doing at the moment so I'll keep an I out on it. Got to work scrubbing and degreasing the block.
https://live.staticflickr.com/31337/49908821628_24fec37462_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2j3gKSC)
Hit the head with a brass brush, the block with a stainless one and small wire wheel for the tight spots.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49908693328_2efddc3a4d_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2j3g6Jy)
Came out really good I think. Everything is exceptionally clean and ready to go back together. I'm not a fan of black engine blocks because you can't see leaks. I'll get around to the valve covers here shortly once the engine goes in for "good".

Mine if I ask what adapter kit you're going with? Just stay away from the Autosports Engineering kit, people have had many problems with them.
Fisch Racing, Serial9, and Mazworx all make a custom bellhousing kit that is rad.

I'm ballin' on a budget over here. While I'd love to go with the Fisch or Serial9 kit...I legitimately could not justify spending twice as much as the motor on a transmission setup..that's absurd IMO and you can find a built R154 for half that.
I did go with the AE kit; but the few problems you're referring to have been with their no-cut and early production kits from what I've read. Even with those issues, I don't believe they account for more than 1% failure..which is pretty acceptable rate by any industry standard. My buddy brought up this point as well. I asked him if he was referencing a certain individual from YouTube concerning the kit, it was, which also constitutes 95% of the time it comes up with almost no additional facts or threads discussing issues. He went and spend the money on a serial 9 kit, with their shifter, and a tilton clutch/slave setup. Hes making roughly x3 the power and its a dedicated track car...much different situation than my coupe.
Is it a slight risk? Yep. Have I done ample amounts of research concerning it? Absolutely. Will you find out here? You betcha.

Matt Schumann on YouTube did the cut housing kit on His jz/cd setup and his flywheel exploded. Saw that video literally right before I almost bought the AE kit and spent the few extra bucks on SerialNine. Best kit out there hands down.
Nice build though! Subbed

Package deal with the trans. I sold it to a buddy of mine who already has a s14 subframe setup in his hatch. That's definitely on the table for me but it'd be the next phase once everything is up and running. I have a good friend that owns a Z specialty shop here in town and they got shelves of parts and parts cars in & out of the shop regularly.

Speaking of parts showing up, I looked in to Freed Engineering's coolant temp sensor for the factory gauge and wasn't impressed. Essentially the same thing I did, just utilizing a 1/8th NPT sensor and M16 adapter. For less than half the price, I sourced a m16x1.5 to m10x1.25 adapter and a OE sensor for a SOHC cluster. Even though it's a dummy unit, I don't want to have any dead needles.

Just as an added note to everyone, Kavlin Malli is using this same kit on his 2jvvti swapped z32 and has made plenty of power with no issues that I'm aware of concerning this kit. I don't know if its related to drifting it but this car will not see that kind of use since its waay to nice of a chassis to be wall riding with; that was a big factor in my decision. Money spent on critical components is directly related seat time. I more than likely would have done with a difference kit like Fisch.
My buddy got his kit the same day I did and got it on last night; it is an awesome piece, no doubt about it. Spend some time cutting it short then grind it down for a perfect fit. She THICCCCCC

I'm terrible at this. Bought a camper so we've been travelling around a bit before my wife starts her internship to wrap up her degree. We won't have this kind of family time for the next year. I also invested money in myself and started my side business doing wiring and making PnP harnesses.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50035059827_e5b3dc6acb_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2jeqL6i)
Had a Friday night to myself without the wife and kid so I hung out with some friends and checked out my buddy's new place. They more or less gave me a huge kick in the ass for motivation so I pulled everything off the shelves this past weekend and dove in to getting my swap together.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50208559936_d6557691aa_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2juKZCu)
Not shooting for much power right now, so normal maintenance items were first, replacing crusty hardware, new vacuum lines, etc etc. When we dropped my friend's JZ in his hatch with the ISR mounts, they were perfect....well I bit the bullet on that one I guess so I had had to fix that and wasted a drill bit in the process. Was trying to drop it in but found out I was never sent the chassis side of the engine mounts..those will be here Friday, ugh.

So now that I couldn't dry fit the motor, I figured it was as good of a time as any to destroy this perfectly good external CD. My friend brought over his FISCH kit so we could compare the kits and get his shifter on and adjusted.

I also decided to dry fit the slave so I can mock up my clutch lines and remote bleeder. Came out pretty good. I can mount the bleeder to the backside of the transmission or somewhere on the frame rail for easy bleeding.

I haven't been around much..slow day at work and I saw I had a message or 2 asking about progress so I figured I'd take some time to update this.
So I believe I left off just under a year ago..dang. Quite a bit has happened since then. I started teleworking right after my birthday so it made travelling around and camping too easy. I don't think we spent a single weekend or complete week home until the beginning of November. Not much happened though, I took a break to focus on trying to make this side business work. I'll touch on that later.
Long and short is we woke up one Saturday morning the last week of January, checked investments, market values, rates etc etc (adulting, right) that I do every other week and the wife rolled over and kissed me good morning. I chuckled and showed her what a COVID housing market in one of the hottest zipcodes in the country has done for us. Deadass..I was like.."you want to sell the house and build a new one?"
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51322440953_46705356da_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2mcbVDB)
Finished all the projects, splash of new paint upstairs, and listed a week later. Under contract in 11hrs, closed 10 days later....cash. Then, we got to move in -5 degree weather..that was pretty fun. Followed by 22" of snow.

BUT!! Even though we downsized a ton and moved in to a small apartment..there was an upside. We were top of the list on the lot lotto..with a hefty check and good amount of luck, we scored a dream spot, building the exact house we wanted. I don't care much about the view but shit..I think we did real good.

Not long after I found a new daily. I'd always kept my eye on whats available and FINALLY one with the right specs popped up for sale..rather good price, and with a service folder about an inch thick. After almost 3 years, I'd found a replacement wagon.

Alright, back to the action. So, I ended up finding a steal of a deal on a WS harness so that was taken care of. I really wanted to maintain a consistent appearance with my lines so I bought some PTFE lines to make clutch lines as well as a remote bleeder for the concentric slave.

Found heckin' deal on a set of Minervas so I jumped on that. I figured since I was having a hell of a time finding clean silvia fenders, I might as well go fiberglass over all around with some nice 3pc wheels.

I swear my procrastination is a gift. I test fit the wheels to check front brake clearance (these had high and mid faces) and before I can order new lips and barrels, the guy hits me up wanting the wheels back. I tell him I'm really looking for metal silvia front end components if he has some. Straight trade for a hood, fenders, Dorki Dori aero bumper, and the correct silvia crash bar.
Thank god, I had such mixed feelings about cutting the rear quarters.

Trans sits just a hair lower than I like but thankfully there's still some work to be done. The trans bracket doesn't bolt up perfectly but I expected that since it wasn't made specifically for this combination. It's about 1/8" off. I've got to get under there to measure for the driveshaft I'm getting made locally. I'll mark the bracket so I can take it over to my friend's mill and slot the chassis mounting holes a bit. I think I will also pull the drivetrain one last time and look in to clearancing the top of the trans tunnel brace a bit more. I should gain another 1/4" if not more.

Now, you're more or less caught up on the car. Once I get this trans mount sorted and the driveshaft ordered, it's off to my friend's shop for exhaust and intercooler piping. I'm pushing hard for a driver before my birthday.
