View Full Version : Anyone have an engine start button?

Ive tried a few different ways to install an engine start button on my S13 SR but keep failing. I though the basic principle was send 12v to the "Ignition" wire on the ECU while the key has the ignition in the "ON" position. When I do this is blows my starter signal fuse. Ive tried sending 12v to the actual starter signal wire on the starter with ignition "on" and it cranks but wont start.
Any one understand this better than me? Please help, thanks.

You still have to put the key in 'ON' then push start.

It will only work when you have the key on. Then press button. Pressing the button alone will only engage the starter.
So wire up the ignition to the relay to the starter button and ground.
Ignition on powers up relay, sends power to starter soilenoid when button is depressed.
I'd tell you how to wire up the realy, but it's been a while since I've done that.

I have the relay powered by cruise control or something like that. I have the relay grounded and the button grounded. The the relay output is on the "start" wire. With the key in the "on" position when I push the button it blows the start signal relay. I tried tried splicing the "start" wire directly to the relay (instead of just tapping it, so there is no fuse) but no then nothing happens at all when you push the button. I thought this would be pretty simple...??
Fuel and everything turns on as normal when the key is "on." The starter doesnt crank at all when I press the button then.
Should I using the starter signal wire right off the starter or the "start" wire (orange) coming off the ecu?
Thanks...

It's the simplest thing in the world. All you're doing is using a button to start the car instead of turning the key one more position. Ignition on, wire the button to the black/yellow feed at the key switch to trigger the solenoid. Some kits come with a low current switch and relay, other just use a high current switch. Follow the instructions that came with it, whichever design it is. Do NOT use the orange wire to the ECU, that is a signal wire only.

I do NOT recommend the high current setup. Because most push button can not handle the amount of current through the button itself it will melt. It can also cause a short to make your starter stay on. Best way to do it is to wire it through a relay.

The S2000 push button is a high current switch, so are several other OE type setups. Obviously if it's designed for a specific application, it will work for that application.

Yes, but we're talking about aftermarket push starts here, not OE. Even the Ignited push start button uses a relay, which is probably the best way to go IMO. A bit more difficult to install, but a lot less problems if anything ever goes wrong.

I have the relay powered by cruise control or something like that. I have the relay grounded and the button grounded.
Umm, Im assuming this is just a momentary switch, and if so, it should have only 2 posts.
so if you have it GROUNDED you did something wrong.
if its the illuminated one, it would make sense tho.
either way,
12volt in-----SWITCH-----Relay----Starter
obviously relay will need 12v constant and ground.
but thats it.

A proper start button for our cars should also momentarily turn OFF power to the accessories (the blue wire on the OE ignition switch). Otherwise you risk blowing up.. anything connected to 12v switched, which is a lot of stuff!
Basically you'd want to wire it with a DPDT relay. Then your pushbutton could exactly mimic the behavior of the "start" key position.

"wire the button to the black/yellow feed at the key switch to trigger the solenoid"
...now thats what I was looking for. The concept is simple yes, but I was unsure of which wire to use. I am using an S2000 button which has 3 live posts. Power in, power out, and ground. The button is lit which I assume is all the ground is for.
Now someone elaborate on the cutting the power to 12v accessories. Why is it setup like that and is it REALLY nessisary? If so how do you wire a relay to do that? Thanks for all the help...
