Hi! I'm new to Zilvia and Nissans in general, but absolutely love build threads. With this car I'm scratching a ten year itch to learn and enjoy drifting. I'm also experimenting with video production so many of my updates will be via short youtube episodes. I'd love your feedback on those - not trying to be famous, just stretching some creative muscles. Thanks for reading and watching!
So where does that leave us?
The plan:
1. Obtain a suitable chassis that hasn't been hacked to ****, wrapped around a telephone pole, or rusted away
2. Clean EVERYTHING
3. Choose, acquire, tune, and install a drivetrain
4. Hit the track
5. Crushing realization that I'm not Keiichi Tsuchiya
6. Repeat step 4 + 5

Two pieces of good news:
1. A stock, barely molested, nissan 240sx has been acquired
2. The next video goes live tomorrow
until then here's a sneak peak of what we're working with:

I don't personally enjoy the video format, but I'm old school.
What concerns me is that pile of ebay garbage you called parts. Put that all up for sale on ebay again (minus maybe the hubs and engine), and start over by buying yourself some quality coilovers, tension rods, and solid subframe bushings.
You'll thank me later.

Do you mean videos instead of pictures and text? Or is it the video content you're not enjoying?
With regards to the parts, I think you're 100% correct. At this stage, however, I made the decision to jump on some deals with the priority of getting up and running for minimal investment.

With all of my rollover PTO pending expiration I made the difficult decision to take a staycation earlier this week. If you've been following along, that's how I've been able to crank out so many drift car vids this week. Anyway, my goal was to have the engine in the car by the end of Wednesday. [insert reality tv show drama] Things got complicated, however, when my daughter came down with a cold and double ear infections and had to stay home with me yesterday.
We finally got her to bed around 8pm last night, so already exhausted me hustled out to the garage like an idiot. Dropping a longitudinal engine by yourself fucking sucks, but around 11:30pm it was finally in and the last bolts were tightened down.

Nope. The bung is below the oil line which won't allow oil to flow freely out of the turbo. Put it up higher.

Here's a quick recap for the print audience:
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4172/33826250413_eccc8d6ebc_b.jpg
I think that I've made a lot of progress over the past few weeks, however, at times it looks exactly the same as it did months ago.
We're in that frustrating nickel and dime phase of the project where the car only really needs a few more things, but those things come at $50 here and $50 there. The result is minor progress here and minor progress there; often without any "wow" moment afterwards. I think the plan now is to focus on getting the engine running. That will be a huge win and provide the energy, motivation, and youtube content to get over the hump.
Thanks!

It will be fine, the pick up pulls in oil so it will drain. Not ideal, but will work
OP be careful with that manifold or it will set your car on fire.

I didn't film it but I recently pulled the oil pan and moved the return bung to a better location.
With the manifold are you just talking about brake line clearance or are there other concerns I should be aware of?

He has a heat shield. it's in the video up there. but you're right. I purchased a shell that caught on fire from that exact ordeal.
it's funny you got that master, I have a RHD master cylinder I used on my previous KA. It's not a bad idea as long as you're careful rebending those lines.
You should ditch that manifold and pickup my manifold and down pipe.

Oil drain bung should be above the level of the oil. I usually put them between the driver side motor mount and the back of the ac compressor in a spot that doesn't obstruct the oil pan bolt. Since this car won't be running AC, it really doesn't matter where it goes as long as it's higher up on the pan.

I would go with a mistu or isr ka rad, and fan shroud u!less you plan to run clutch fan, and as for your battery ground redo it to the strut tower, I did mine to the floor and it wasn't enough grounding for the car to want to turn over a sr, ka is a stronger compression motor, so I would also ground it to the strut tower, the trunk floor is very thin

Alright gang, I need your help again. I added an additional ground to the starter, so the engine is now turning over great.
Questions:
1. Do I need the dash connector (next to the ECU) in order to get spark? Specifically the orange Ignition Start wire? Is the tach wire connected to the coil circuit too?
2. Do I need the MAF in order to get spark?
3. Any other items in an Auto Single Cam -> Manual Dual Cam conversion that might be tripping me up? Neutral safety switch?
Thank you!!

06-20-2017, 08:27 AM
Should not need maf for spark.
Need to have distributor wired up right and ecu needs to be receiving/giving signal to give spark.
i dont think dash gauges matter.
Make sure your interlock relay is hooked up that may matter for the clutch.
Review an auto to manual how to to see where you missed something.

I reached back out to Martin from RS Enthalpy for help a few weeks ago, and he invited me to ship him the ECU for testing. Well turns out that my ECU wasn't working properly even though it was able to power some functions of the car and display fault codes. He's going to try and repair it, so I'll either be good to go with the original or have to buy a new ECU.
Either way, I'm relieved to finally have nailed down the issue.

So I'm still working out a couple bugs with the car breaking up at WOT. I've closed the spark plug gap down to .025 from .035 which helped, and I've also re-set the ignition timing closer to the 20dbtc mark which also helped.
All in all the car feels significantly better throughout the rev range as long as I'm not pressing the gas pedal all the way down. I haven't had the chance yet to get it on a long enough stretch of road to test holding boost so that's my next move.
I'm also thinking it might just be time to bite the bullet and find a dyno tuner that can make real-time adjustments or at least point out what I've done wrong.
