So I have a very long build thread in the premium section and on a few other sites that includes all my car history and whatnot, but I figured I'd keep it short and sweet in this section of Zilvia and just show you what I'm working on now.
I purchased this car a couple years ago with the intention of saving it from a lifetime of hackdom at the hands of the "car guys" up here in Michigan. Also, a rust free shell is very hard to come by, and this was one of the cleanest (underneath) I'd seen. So I bought this for $700.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c25/Turbo711/personal/IMG_0868.jpg
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c25/Turbo711/personal/IMG_0870.jpg
I cannot tell you how botched the R33 conversion was, or how much of the wiring had been hacked up, etc, etc, etc. The more I got into this thing the more I realized it was going to need a total restoration.
So I started pulling it all apart. I'll save you from having to look at all the pictures of the deconstruction process and get straight to the good stuff.
I started working at a shop called Strictly Import Motorsports, where they convinced me that this car needed a RWD 4G63 swap. The plan was to stick a stock block DSM engine in with a twin-scoll HX35 setup and call it a day. Let's just say things got a little off track.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c25/Turbo711/personal/6042091e.jpg

And I ended up with a forged 2.3liter stroker that I still needed a LOT of money to get in the car and running the way I wanted it.
So unfortunately, I have abandoned that route.
In comes this:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c25/Turbo711/personal/81C7844B-298F-4638-9BC1-00F72721C381-2983-0000026124CC313B_zps6a09fa53.jpg
And this:

So I finally got the thing torn down and was ready to start the build up. So another shopping spree was in order:

And I bought a set of old Kei-office coils to get started on.
Extended my LCA's 25mm (need to redo).

Too bad you didn't stick with the 4g route. I know of SIM, good guys. I have bought many a part from them for the Talon.
I'd like to eventually have a 4g63 powered 240 myself.

Today I cleaned up the VQ:

Yeah, I was really excited for the compound setup, but with the way I like to do things, it was just wayyyy too expensive to complete. I'd still like to do it someday, we shall see.
Put some of my under dash and whatnot back in today. Gutted the AC box so I can still have a blower. Just waiting on some flywheel and bellhousing bolts to come in and I can the VQ in the bay!

Bolted it up and slid it in and out a few times, only to find I needed to take the exhaust manifold off haha. So we wrapped it around the intake and finally got it in!

Haha it was going to be insane! But I still needed wastegates, a bov, intercooler, piping, couplers, injectors, engine management, etc, etc. it just was too expensive and I need to get on track and actually drive. I've always believed in suspension before power anyway :)

Yes, that and the easy addition of an anti-roll bar, and that it's all billet aluminum.
I like that you still have the camber plates to adjust in front, so you can mess with camber/caster more.
I also plan on doing the occasional track day, which I'll probably install anti-roll bars for, so having the hole already there is nice.
I do plan on getting the Wisefab rear kit though, that thing is beautiful, and makes a lot of sense to me. I really like the way Illyuk's car looks when it drifts now.

There have been a few delays with my TDP kit, all of which have been understandable and have been communicated promptly. The owners father died :(, and then the CNC machine broke when machining my S13 spindles (they normally come with S14/15 sized ones). So the kit is supposed to ship out tomorrow via 2-day air, so I'll have it Friday at the latest.

Thanks guys, I'm stoked on driving this thing soon.
From what I can measure, there is 70mm of correction in the hubs. I'm not sure where the 90-100mm comes from.
There are so many adjustments on this kit it's crazy. I've pulled the camber plates almost all the way back to try and keep the strut in the PCD. This caused a lot of camber. I reduced it as much as I could at the knuckle, but these Kei-office coils are so long they hit the knuckle at the bottom.
In this position, the tie rods are just a bit too long to let you run the control arms at their shortest setting. I have them at 16.5in bolt to ball joint center, but I think that's too far, as it has some toe out now for sure. I think I'll probably trim the sleeve on the tie rod a bit so I can run the LCA's shorter.
There is more angle to be had for sure, the toe out needs to be fixed and there is still some ackerman in the steering. If I zero everything out I should get a few more degrees.

Yeah it's pretty crazy. The great thing about these lower control arms is that, at least at the current settings, there is room to spare on the inside at full lock. Crazy I know. I'm hoping that the additional 40mm of inner rim on my 8.75's won't limit me too much. I might try a 10mm slip on spacer, or even moving down to an 17x8.25in rim. With an 8.25in wheel and a 10mm slip on, I would only have 20mm more of the wheel on the inside, which I know I have room for.
The front fenders will go up and out quite a bit from where they are now, so I think I'll have outer clearance for either. We shall see!

Yea I need 40mm overs so I can run another 5mm spacer and less front camber to get more angle but I'm still not anywhere near that with full PBM stuff.

It was about $2400 shipped. Depends on how much your bank wants to screw you on the exchange from USD to Euros.
A lot I know, but nothing touches this as far as angle, roll center correction, and adjust-ability go. I could convert this to a purely road course set up in a day just by messing with the adjustments and drilling a hole for a sway bar.
Hopefully I can get some work done on this weekend, I'm so close to having this running and driving! Cashflow is definitely limiting me at the moment.

I'll get everything tight and a little better adjusted this weekend and snap some pictures. The wheels are stock S14 wheels which should be 16x6.5 +40mm, and I have a 25mm spacer so +15mm.

How did you set up the strut bracket?
Right now I have it where the strut axis is inside the PCD of the tower. As you can see this gives me quite a bit of caster. I wanted to start with it like this for two reasons. One, I wanted to see how it drove "inside the rules" and two, the rear isn't going to have much grip for a while so I don't think I'm going to be able to take advantage of the greater front grip from a big contact patch.

Apparently -8* (reduced from above pic) is the least camber I can run at the moment, and my shock axis isn't quite inside the PCD of the strut tower. If I had shorter coilovers I could run less, but at the expense of more positive camber at lock. Hmmm, not sure if I'm going to say screw it and move the axis outside the PCD, or leave it like it is and wait till I get shorter coilovers....

Hmmm let's see here. Finish up the wiring/loom work, fuel lines, driveshaft, seat bracket, mount the belts, make the radiator hoses, clearance the header some more, buy or shorthen the shifter bracket, and get an alignment. So not a terrible lot, but definitely some work/more money.
I should be able to get a little work done this week, I think I have some spare cash.

Flipped my brackets and pulled a collar today, as well as moved my camber plates to the middle, reducing caster.

Got the camber down to -6ish, and it raised the car some. Looks like I'll have to pull the last collar to get ride height where I want it. Kei-offices are definitely not meant to go low.

Another good thing to know is you do not need to splice in to the VQ engine harness as long as you have a 350z engine room harness and 240 engine harness. I made a patch harness using these:

Sorry for the lack of updates guys! I just got a big tax bill from my previous employer and it's been killing my car money. I've been working with TDP, they're sending me new knuckles with more roll center correction, I should have them very soon, they were supposed to be here by now, haha.
I also switched the old Kei-offices out for some FEAL-revalved DGR's with Hypercoil springs in hopes of adding a little more adjustability to the front end. The longer brackets should help me pull out some camber, I have to flip them over though.

I've been a bit undecided. I'm definitely going to run both headers to a collector/y-pipe, but I'm not sure what to do after that. I've thought about oval as the car is going to be very low, but it's so bloody expensive. I'll probably end up doing stainless all the way back, but if I'm feeling brave I might go aluminum. It's lighter and cheaper, but I have my doubts about it's durability on a low car. I'm not sure how far up I can tuck it.
Regardless it's going to have a muffler, I'm not a big fan of straight pipe NA VQ.

Ive considered the oval before, but the price being too high and a chance of it getting destroyed are holding me back lol. I bought the Mckinney swap headers, and they came in the other day. You should look into them.9829198292

You can use stock manifolds for this swap. I suggest finding some HR headers because they are tubular instead of cast. They will clear steering linkage too. The VQ motor doesn't gain much when it comes to headers.

Yeah I think I'm going to use stock manifolds for now, but fabbing up some headers is tempting.

Well, I like having my cars low. I know a lot of people hate on it with the "suspension geometry" argument, but when you have companies making things like this, and drift works and PSM making stuff for the rear, there really is no argument left. It looks cool, and functions. I love it.

I wish I could! Nothing like that clears the VQ. I'm not going to be running a hood because of this. I do plan to tube the front though.
I'd like to get into competition eventually, and I'm seriously debating on whether to keep the VQ or swap to something easier to work on. I have some ideas on that as well ;) We'll see how this first season of fun goes.

I got the "engine bay" wiring harness ready for it's first test fit tomorrow. I still need to extend the headlight harness and find some S13 headlight plugs.
Should have the rear subframe back in and rear ride height finalized tomorrow, hopefully taking out all the camber doesn't raise it up too much.

Well, I got the subframe back in.
Unfortunately, these rear coilovers don't go anywhere near as low as I want them. This is zero camber, and drooping the spring and inch and a half. Like for real? These would work perfect on an S14 haha.
So now I'm going to get another set of coilovers. Not really sure what, I might get PSM comps simply because they're probably the best set for $1000, I really need this car done.

I'm drooping the spring 1.5" to get to where it is, I'd really rather have a shorter damper and not have to do that, it can't be good for the inside of the shock.
I would love to try FEAL coils as well, Odi is a super cool dude to talk to on the phone, and will make them specifically for your setup. I may just save a bit more money and go with those. I'd have to make sure they're short enough though, those are the only ones I'm not sure about going low.
There are really only three options for me.
Parts Shop MAX Competition (mainly because of $$$)
Fortune Auto
FEAL
I'm also kind of debating on spring rates if I go Fortune or FEAL, I have 8/6 on these just because that's what they're valved for, but with corrected front roll center and no sway bar in the front some other combo might be more beneficial? It's hard to say.

11-11-2013, 12:33 AM
I feel like that's one of the biggest advantages for Feal - I trust the person giving the advice and making recommendations. Obviously Odi is a rad driver but he seems to have the chassis setup thing figured out as well.

Thanks man, but it's not wisefab. It's a Track Day Performance kit. It allows me to adjust the geometry from stock-like to wisefabs original kit and anywhere in between. :)
On another note, I start my new job monday, so once the cash starts coming in again I'll have some updates for everyone.

Haha thanks guys, a few more weeks and I should be able to have everything around to make it run and drive! Sadly I won't be making 200 Drifters of December, which was one of my main goals :(.

Hmmm, well I'm waiting for a certain someone to fabricate and thoroughly test a kit of his own design, then fab one for me so that I may purchase it :D.
I thought this was cool. Typical low car on the left, my car on the right (before I raised it 15mm).

^^LOL thanks, but that's going a bit too deep...
Minus the coils & adjustable arms, I like nice, semi-stock knuckles/LCAs with upgraded bushings... even thinking about ditching the coils for some nice struts w/front camber plates. Since I'm not a guy who knows more than shit & squat about suspension geometry etc; I like to keep it as simple as possible ;)

Great build man!!! keep up the great work!
Thanks!
Ordered my AIT kit today, spacers and tires for the 17's, and boxed up my wiring harness and shifter bracket to go out and be modified. I'm a bit tired of wiring at this point, but I still need to do a bit of extending in the chassis harness and wrap and mount it all.
A little fab for the radiator, some fuel lines and we'll be ready to rock!
Then just to sell these coils and buy some FEAL's, and I'll take the car for it's first alignment.
Then it's daily duties and drift events!

Okay, time for a decent update. I did some budgeting for the next six months and it looks like I'm going to barely scrape by, I'm trying to pay off some debts I have as fast as possible. So in light of that, I made some decisions that I would have rather not, but I NEED to get on the track this year.
Sold my DGR's to a buddy of mine and got some J2 Engineering coilovers. I know I know, another pair of off-brand coilovers? Sadly yes. These are identical to Isis HR-Pro's and Godspeed Mono-RS but without the knock-off company attached. Like I said, I did what I had to.
I actually had to buy shorter Stance 6" 8kg/mm springs for the front because the 7" ones didn't cut it.
I also bought an AIT racing aero kit. It's their "D1" Vertex copy.
There's another reason I had to do some moving around of my budget. I stumbled across this Carbonetic carbon 2-way for a killer deal from a fellow Zilvian BNIB and had to have it, since it's my dream diff.
I got my tires mounted on the 17's and mocked up my seat brackets. Turns out the seat is too wide for the Nagisa brackets, so I'm going to have to do a little fab to make it work.
I also sent out my VQ and KA wiring harnesses to a fellow Zilvian so I didn't have to mess with them in my freezing cold garage.
On to the photo dump.

Thanks man. I do think the new fenders would look better, unfortunately these are about 80+mm wider than stock with the flares, so there isn't really another fender on the market, but I may not run as much spacer. I'm still debating on the flares actually.
Just ordered my vlsd output shafts so I can install my diff along with some axle spacers, Walbro 255, 3.69 final drive, and handbrake "seahorse" extenders. My wiring and everything else should be here in the next two weeks, which means the car should run and drive this month with a little fab and hard work.

Back from the dead! Sooo as most of you know, this car has been mostly parted out at this point, but I picked up another running and driving fastback and made some... changes.

Anddd it's current state of disrepair, but it runs and drives, and I can already tell the front kit is going to be amazing.LOTS, LOTS more to come for both cars, but for now I'm going to get this thing legal and beat the daylights out of the KA until I can decide which direction I want to go with either chassis.

Did some block sanding of the horrendous bodywork on this thing. It needs overs and fenders pretty badly.

HAH! The idea is still tempting, But I have 4 KA longblocks that are calling my name at the moment. My friend Joe is also building a turbo 5.3 for his coupe, and I'm going to be extremely jealous. We'll see what happens :2f2f:

Yes I am thinking bone-stock refreshed KA-T. As long as it makes 300whp I'll be fine, I'm going to use a V-band EFR 7163 and Nismotronics for engine management. I've yet to decide on an engine for the other car, but it's probably going to be LS based :gasp:.

Because I was broke and needed a car to drive after working on it for two years. So the TDP kit, coils, 5-lug, Nardi, and wheels went onto this car, and now I have a track-only chassis and a street car.

How is the drifting with stock power and that amazing suspension? I've always been curious about going over kill on suspension and leaving everything else mostly stock. That's got to be a lot of fun with no suspension limitation just power limitation. I might do that on a daily drifter build like you.

Haha well I really need to get a real alignment and power steering (happening next week), but so far it's awesome. I can literally huck as hard as I want, and I can easily dial out speed with angle. Definitely going to take some getting used to. Once I get an alignment and power steering, I'm going to post up an ongoing review thread.

Well, dialing in this front kit has proven to be more of a challenge that I anticipated, mostly because no one wants to take the time to adjust it on an alignment rack, regardless of how much I want to pay them. I am currently in search of a good race car alignment shop, or I may just buy/make my own string setup to save time in the future.
I am enjoying driving the car for now, but it's slowness is rather boring at times. Tons of fun to dive through corners with though, it stays quite flat despite the lack of front anti-roll bar.
So I'll be dialing it in this week, possibly giving the car an interim paint job, and generally driving the piss out of it some more.
In other news, I've turned to the dark side:

Today I finally took the time to set up the TDP kit properly. Turns out I had way too little of caster dialed in, haha. I also have been messing around with ackerman a bit, so I moved it back to slightly positive.

The car drives crazy amazing now. I seriously can't get over how it refuses to understeer, and has hardly any roll even without an anti-roll bar.

I'm going to clean everything up, get some new rings and run a sweeper hone down the cylinders, put it back together with some Permatorque headgaskets and ARP head bolts and call it a day. A few more parts are on the way but winter is coming and I need winter tires, so the V8 will probably get put on hold for a while.
