Hi All

Very new here... My son and I picked up an s14 with an s15 front end about a month ago so he can get into drifting. The local drift track is 3 miles from home in Phoenix. He's the drifter and I am the pit crew/repair guy/supportive dad :)

Looks like we have a stock KA, but exhaust has been modified.

Stock Header Exhaust Manifold
Dummy Cat (installed by PO to pass visual inspection)
from the dummy cat there is a flange and then 3" straight piped all the way

My son wants the car to be LOUD AS HELL (it is) and to pass emissions (it TRIPLED the allowable numbers)

I don't mean to start a shitstorm here... no need to debate the exhaust size at all.

I am new to working on cars and pretty mechanically inclined. I cant afford to buy random parts to try...

Here is the question.

Can I get an OEM front cat/downpipe and swap out the dummy? How difficult would that be?

Or would you purchase a $100 header with long pipe on ebay and drop in a magnaflow cat and bolt up to the rest of the straight pipe he has?

He wants to keep it loud...Dad just wants it to pass emissions to get him a plate and then he can do what he wants for 2 years. I don't mind spending a day every 2 years swapping parts to pass emissions then going back to what we have.

I just have no idea where to start and what to do next

After he learns to drift (and do it well) an engine swap may be in the future for more power... but it is a distant future.

I appreciate your help!!
