All of us are into cars but how much of you guys like shooting pictures so the rest of the world can see? Post up what you use and a picture or two.

Should really stick to mainly automotive photography but if you want to share something then post away. Not sure how active people are that take pictures but I shoot a bit of my local scene and whenever I go out.

I use to use a cheap canon t3i with kit lens and regular 50mm but I've now switched over to film which crazy addicting. I got a cheap olympus om10 and 50mm 1.8 for like 30 bucks at a yard sale. Worked great but now I stepped it up and got a Nikon f3hp with a 24mm 2.8

Here is one of my favorite pictures of a locals kouki... He has an r33 now but this one got rear ended in his drive way almost a year after his first kouki was also hit in his drive way the same way. Crazy story and clean car.

This is from our local meets, used my nikon with normal kodak ultra 400 but pushed it 1600. Got a lot of cool shots for basically shit late night parking lot lamp light. Was shooting handheld the whole time with it at 2.8 and around 15-30 for shutter.

We have an old photography thread on here but almost no one that used to post in it posts on here any more. Not sure if any of those people even shoot any more.

I've been fortunate to be able to learn from (and assist) one of the best commercial advertising photographers in the Midwest, Nick Collura (google him).

I've personally come along way since I've posted anything on here. Only thin now is I almost only shoot for work and hardly shoot anything "on a whim", and if it's not for work it's usually a personal project. I shoot mostly advertising focusing on portrait and lifestyle photography. There's probably some really great photographers on here that don't post.

Here's a couple shots from 2 recent projects. Link to my site is mhrussell.com (http://www.mhrussell.com)

Yeah I saw that thread but it seemed pretty dead being about 4 years old. Would like to see if there is any new guys. Seems like the last 2 years no as a hobbie more people are doing it for social media and what not.

Gonna just randomly post and hopefully this thread stays alive.
Push kodak gold one stop from 800, had about two hours of sleep from hanging out at our meets the night before. Had bit long exposure so set it one this railing in our parking garage by work.
http://i.imgur.com/hsPdHFF.jpg?1

Started messing with black/white film and love it. So much better for low light and pushing. This was Hp5 pushed to 1600. My cars been out since apirl last year :( was my daily and randomly bent two rods the one day. Built the motor, shaved the bay, FA500 coils, some small aesthetic things and its just been sitting for the last couple months. For life of me cant figure out this lean issue on start and now just randomly dies. Going to mess with it and start from scratch these next two days. Have swapped ecus, maf, replaced just about everything and leak tested it.
http://i.imgur.com/mn7tPZG.jpg?1

Another shoot from the same b/w roll @ 1600, only have a 24mm 2.8. Has a lot of range of light shooting at 2.8 and 30th shutter. Next purchase is a nice 50 1.4
http://i.imgur.com/la3Rahe.jpg?1

Buddies coupe, just swapped in a running ka to get him going till he gets funds to do a 1jz. 1600 B/w
http://i.imgur.com/XHvQkTc.jpg?1

These next ones are the same film pushed to 3200. The box speed is 400 and im so surprised with the results. Can shoot in daylight perfect but super high shutter and aperture. Need an N.D filter to mess with.

This was a couple weeks ago. Kid came a little to hot and smashed a curb trying to roll into the meet. Was auto lol, wheel and all the arms were fucked. Couldn't turn the car since it has electronic steering. Was going forward and back for about 10 mins till people pushed his car to the grass. Kid probably wasnt going to our meet but probably this subro meet that is held the same night on the other side of the parking lot. The do the typical obnoxious and attention shit.

Found my new favortie film. Cinestill 800. Shot this whole thing at 800 from a parking lot meet at night on hand held at 15/30th shutter to sunny afternoon and a one foggy morning. Everything came out really good even if it was underexposed 3-4 STOPS or even overexposed a couple. You can shoot this literally at 200-1600 and develope it at regular speed.

This film supposed to be similar chemical make up to old kodak production film they used in moves to gives really nice tones and eats light up like crazy. Any artificial light turns this nice neon red and is washed out.

Op if you are just getting into film I suggest buying some Ilford XP-2 as its a great B&W film that can be developed at costco or whatever has those 1 hr processing stations. Scans into Photoshop real nice like

Have a roll on my desk right now. I do all my developing and scanning myself :naughty: need to make a flikr because uploading and resizing in imgur is loosing a ton of detail.

I forgot about this thread and I hope to get some guides. I picked up a Canon 7D with standard lens + 50mm f1.4 lens and wondering what other lens you guys recommend?

For example, what type of lens should I use if I want to take awesome photos near and from a distance? Also, would these lens also be appropriate for videography?

Unless you can recommend a link/tutorial I can read, that would be great.

50mm are always great in my opinion. I had a lot of fun with mine back in the day.
I was more familiar with Nikon but the 7d should be more than capable of taking great video if stabilized.

Here's a speedhunters article of some gear.
They have a good handful of articles on automotive photography.
Not by any means saying speedhunters is a go to for photography knowledge but they do have quite a bit of experience to share.

I agree with him as well. I started off with a 50mm. Great lens for its price and ability. Called the nifty fifty for a reason lol

There's just so much to answering those questions.

I had a 7D when it first came out. Great little crop body. 50 1.4 was the first lens I bought...still have it. 50mm is just a great focal length because its closest to how our eye sees. I'm a fan of primes. For video or photo its always great to have the standard set of primes, 24mm, 35mm (my personal favorite focal length), 50mm, 85mm and then something longer like a 100mm or then a 70-200. Its always nice to have some zoom lenses too. Something wide like a 17-40 or 16-35 if you have the budget. The 24-70 II is a really great all around lens. SUPER sharp on the 5DSR body.

I'm fortunate to have access and usage of virtually every Canon piece of glass out there, even the TS lenses. Love those damn things.

If you are shooting video one of the best tools you can have around is the Manfortto Monopod. You can conduct interviews with it and do small camera movements. This is a must. Another thing is a slider. There are SOOOOO many sliders out there. I haven't kept up on whats the best or best bang for your buck lately since I don't shoot video all that often, but there are a ton of them and you can spend a little or a lot.

I recommend following Fstoppers. Lots of great info on there.

Also, if you plan on shooting a lot. Upgrade as soon as you can to a full frame body. It'll save you the trouble of having to sell MORE lenses later on.

^Your shots are amazing

I've been shooting amateur for a while using a Nikon D90 body with either 18-200mm or 50mm f/1.8. Things died down since I got married but this year I got a deal I couldn't refuse on a Nikon D3 with 35-70mm f/2.8. I'm back into automotive photography and has primarily taken a liking to light painting. My IG: @zeedakay

Thanks for the compliments! If by studio you mean outside then yes lol. It's been pretty challenging covering drift events with that borderline wide angle but it definitely fits the bill when I can get up close and personal. I only use one inexpensive led panel from Amazon so there not much to invest to get to get these results. As a hobby it's fun but I need to get paid so I can justify more full frame lenses $

Not sure what everyone shoots but I'd like some second opinions about switching bodies... (Kinda of a rant)

Tired of the hassle of film 90% of the time I shoot, I love it but after going through all the film brands and iso to try i've got my hand few I can see myself using but I never have time to develop it myself so I have rolls sitting for month or a roll in my Nikon f3HP for months also because I dont want to spray and pray a shot so I take my time and only take a picture when its the right moment.

SOOO before film I had a canon t3i, been okay for family stuff. My mom originally bought but did all automatic setting, then when I got my 240 I didnt know anyone that took good pictures so I decided to learn. I just have the regular 50 1.8, kit lens and then a 75-300mm zoom.

Now Im thinking if I should stay canon or jump ship since I want to get into more professional work, do a bit of freelance, better quality pictures and go from there. My budget is around 800-1200ish for a body. Im stuck between going Canon 6Dmk1, Nikon D750, and then going mirrorless Sony....

Canon: Already have Canon lens but honestly its not even amazing glass. The 5 year old kit lens is okay, the 50mm 1.8 is standard and can get a auto lens on any body for similar price and then the zoom is meh which is less than 80$ and never ever use it outside when me and my brother played baseball.

Debated between going back to apsc and tbh I love shooting wideangle and landscapes so full frame is the way to go plus better resolution, more picture to work with editing etc so really only full frames are 6D and 5Dmk3 thats in my budget used/new.

So 6d would be amazing for stills no doubt but even though its lighter than the 5dmk3 having a DSLR like that and doing street pics will always bring attention since its a pretty big camera. I love taking out my F3 in busy areas and just point and shoot with not feeling like im invading someone privacy. If I have my t3i its a bit more clumsy to toss around and comparing my canon lens to something tiny like my 24mm nikkor no one notices it. I already have canon lens and its basically plug and play with no issues. Video on it would be good but even though picture wise it be better in low light and noise than the 80D it doesnt have all the focusing features and other little stuff like movable screen.

Nikon: Only Nikon I can see in my budget are the D750/D610 only issues I have with nikon bodies even though I LOVE my F3HP and my 50mm 1.2 and 24mm 2.4 nikkor lens is the button layout, have a lot of issues, been reading a lot of recalls for the D750 and there is no way I can do any video that I would feel come out any better than a newer phone shooting 4k. It would awesome to use my manual nikkor lens plug and play but honestly I could by a cheap canon adapter or sony to slap it on since it doesnt need any type of electronics. I would go nikon if I did more studio and sport photography having SD card options, higher FPS etc

Sony: Sony is just a mess of things lol, way newer, sensor is just a hair better in low light, better dynamic range but wont have as amazing colors or sharpness because of a sony sensor and not having canon glass. Has an EVF which has had a lot of good things said about it, focusing on it is no question better than DSLR only issue is when its low light it likes to hunt but they fixed the focus system from the a7 to a7II along with internal stabilization so for video work its perfect and if I shoot low light I can drop my shutter down to basically 1/8 or slower with decent pictures. Video wont be as clean noise wise at similar ISO but its not far behind the 6d but iso range is a lot higher. Has a single SD card like 6d, has focus peaking which is great when I shoot manual lens adapted. Not as well built and sealed as a canon but it weights about half and would be easy to shoot street since its so small and thin.

So im leaning more Sony A7II than Canon 6D on 3 things. Video, no question the sony would hold up better and they have flat picture log mods while with canon i'd at least need to install magic latern and I went through that hole long ago. If I switch to some sony/canon lens like get an adapter if I want to shoot more 4k video I could always pick up an A6300 used dumb cheap and use it just for video work whenever I feel like it. Newer technology than the canon so its semi future proof. I feel mirrorless system camera menu layout, EVF, etc will start going trickle downing to DSLR like built in image stabilization. Last is overall image quality which is moot to some but other will argue till theyre blue. Sony sensor is just way better for low light especially since I normally shoot my local meets or go out from 4pm-1am whenever Im not working. The other thing is dynamic range. The 6d is stunning like the 5dmk3 with really low noise up higher iso but besides that, getting canon glass which I can slap on the sony easily, I dont see myself staying Canon for its out of camera colors.

noticed this beauty when I was on holiday in Greece. I wonder how does this babe behave in mountains? Haven't expected so many expensive cars in Greece, the number of beautiful villas for sale (

I have the D750 & i love it. I've litterally never had a problem with it. I've shot absoloutely everything there possibly is to shoot. From huge amazing weddings, to sport photography, to car meets. It performs amazing everytime. In my college classes i use the 5dmkiii and i still would choose the nikon over that. The low light capabilities completely demolish it & honestly the video isn't bad at all. It's all on your glass, i've taken some amazing video with mine. Obviously canon is way better in video in general but the 750 holds up. What i would suggest doing is renting both of the cameras for a weekend, might cost like 50 bucks and try them out & see which one you shoot better with because they are both amazing cameras. And damn over here in nyc there is a place called colorhouse & it's a film lab and they have same day development. I just go & drop it off and pick it up later for 8$. But both adorama.com & bhphotovideo have some great prices on used cameras which is how i got mine. I deff do suggest playing around with them for a weekend before you purchase them. You can rent at borrowlenses.com

I forgot BH had used items. Though on paper the nikon seems like an amazing options I dont think it fits my "need". Had a lot of though and even talking to my coworker who is a huge canon guy with 5kmk3 he said that for what I want the sony is best beat.

Both the 6D and A7ii sensor wise are amazing and huge step up for me. Only two difference in IQ canon cleaner noise on higher ISO and that natural out of camera warm tone while the sony has better dynamic range and better low light. So outside of pure pictures the difference is how Im going to use it.

-Sony all day for video over 6d
-Better for my manual lens with focus peaking in view finder
-The size and build is similar to my F3HP which is a beast for street and chugging around. Has similar look and feel so I can shot my normal "behind the scenes" shots without drawing much attention.
-I shoot a lot meets at night so that little more dynamic range along with internal stabilization will help huge in getting low iso shots and low noise shooting handheld.
-The jpg quality is actually just a tad sharper than canons which would be awesome if I do events where im running around taking as many pictures as I can
-Has eye AF which would be awesome for portrait photography on the fly.
-Once I get a canon adapter or nikon lens I could slap that on a second body for 4k. The a6300 and a7s are coming way down in price.

The only things I will missout on the canon 6d is work flow like if I shot a wedding and having to wait for the sensor or adjust stuff through menu so I might miss a good moment, battery life but tbh when I shoot I normally do all my shooting within an hour if I go somewhere special and I still have the film mentality of only hitting shutter when I need to so I will take at most 50-100 pictures at most, never done anymore. Last is ergonomics of being overly built. Kinda worried about moisture and sand getting the camera since im in florida but im never by the beach and im overly careful with things I own and everything is basically the same condition I bought it over a good amount of time. (my car is different lol)

My idea is the sony will be like an up to date Nikon SLR in size/build, I will shoot more manual lens than anything which will be better over the 6d and last is video will huge upgrade in this. Not 4k like i'd want but even the 1080p from what i've seen is just a hair better than canon along with out of the box picture profile I can color grade.

I’ve shot on the 6D since the day it came out. Check out my website. It’s definitely a great camera but the focus points system is awful. I’ve missed a lot over the years because of it.

My next body will with be the 6D MK2 or the 5D MK4. The 5D is a better camera in every way, other than the touch screen, but the 6D is cheaper and still full frame.

I’m debating about going Hasselblad X1D In 2018. Lotta scratch to swallow but would be worth it since I Shoot almost all portrait work.

Just booked a trip out to LA and staying in Hollywood. Gonna bring my camera along and do some street photography. We’ll see what’s up.

@R3b the only thing i have to say is counter intuitive to sony's design is that, yeah the camera is incredibly small & of a different build then either dslr but once you slap a 16-35 or a 24-70. It defeats the purpouse because now it just looks like one big lens lol, the only upside is that, it is most deff lighter. & with the jpgs, just shoot raw lol but at the end of the day. Its whatever fits your budget/style. Do you have any friends that own the sony?

Also the A7’s batteries last for shit. Especially if your using the viewfinder lot. I use one for video interviews (love the focus peaking. Wish Canon would get on that) and it’ll go through a whole battery in one 25 min video.

Yeah the battery life on the sony will be a bummer but like I said my mentality when shooting is like with film so I want be looking through view finder 24/7 and im sure there is a sleep mode so the sensor isnt running when nothing is clicked over X period. The camera size is kinda moot thinking about it but still body style reminds me of an SLR and im sure if I stick to prime manual lens or even if I get a native lens like the 28-70mm which is fairly tiny unlike 16-35 canon or one of sigma arts lens which I will never own at time soon. Im not too worried aboutit. I shot mainly jpg on my old canon but if I go sony I will def go more RAW.

When I do my flatbed scans for film they normally come out 6000x4000. I'll def shoot more raw and get my MAC side of my computer working again since I have dual boot windows/mac and OSX had all my adobe programs along with music production stuff.

Same goes for lens, will use my nikkor lens mostly and even with my old canon I hardly use automatic. Once you get into the flow its just bang there. Man the 1.2 is deadly i've missed A LOT of good shots on my F3 just because I was that hair off.

I have a buddy at work that shoots a A7rii I think, will ask him if I could see it for a bit hopefully and also testing out my buddies D3 at our local weekly meet. Just to feel for the nikon system and see what this 50mm 1.2 can do in low light on a DSLR.

I'll try post some pics a bit later so thread stays on topic lmao

Just bought a MK4 and Battery grip last week. Loving it so far. The amazing autofocus is blowing me away.

Ordering a RRS trippod and head this week.

Landed the biggest job of my career so far. Shooting the week after next. Woot woot.

Update: just bit the bullet and ordered tripid. Worth the $2100 but man that’s a tough one to swallow. Buy once, cry once I guess.

Thats sick man^, if I had the budget I would of went mk4. Still like canon ergonomics than anything else.

Figured, i'd do an update on the Sony. Just going to post pictures I transferred off camera to phone. So cant really pixel hunt. Will dump a good deal of pictures in a bit but Pros/Cons. Cant look at raw or downscale in native windows since sony files are wack.

Pros
-Layout which others hate, coming from canon there is a lot more I can do, along with software addons like retouch, little apps etc. Little gimicks but from factory its great over using something like magic lantern for canon bodies. Not sure about nikon or Panasonic bodies.
-Focus peaking, makes shooting my manual lens a DREAM. Nails it all the time and I focus just about as quick as autolens only issue is moving subjects which i'll get a native lens later
-I.S and dynamic range. I'll show later but there is a lot of room to mess with pictures along with the I.S is sooooo good for lowlight. Could be pitch black and I can shoot at 800-1200 ISO with my 50mm 1.2 all day with good pictures at 1 second shutter speeds. No mirror slap is a dream.
-Size its a dream to hold and even though its not "built" I dont feel like im ever going to just drop it or toss it around. Makes shooting street so easy. No one looks at you, they think you're some random with a point and shoot. Exactly like shooting my film Nikon F3HP

Cons-
-Battery life but going out is more than enough for me to shoot a meet or the day. I struggle a bit for 2-3 hours one day at the beach but its so bright I need bright viewfinder. On a roadtrip lasted the whole day no problem taking pics outside the car.
-Lens, havent looked much into sony lens but I know they are pretty pricey...
-Button layout, at first it was really wack but changing the buttons for what I want its okay. Sometimes there are a few odd way of doing things which I wish they made easier but not a deal breaker.
-Colors/Picture..... This is probably my biggest grip. Maybe I need to mess more with the tons and post processing (my mac partition of my hackintosh is dead and that lightroom) but all my pictures are extremely warm and almost orange. I cant stand it. That and along with how you can setup autoshooting you dont even have to try to take a good picture. It does it so easily. So its kinda worrying but encouraging to shoot differently because lets face it, you can tell when someone shoots a sony. I just dont want to be another guy that falls into that. To put it into perspective.

There is this guy at our local meets who has a 6300. Shoots auto all, amazing pictures doesn't edit it, cant even shoot manual to save his life. 1k+ followers on insta, always getting shoots, camera plebs wow at his work when its fairly amateur etc. Cool and amazing dude but I feel like he shoots 90% camera and 10% himself. When I first asked him about sony cameras I asked if he can put it manual everything for me and couldnt figure it out and hes had the camera for months. Two seconds I figured it out and take a couple pictures and gave it back. I was shocked.

Overall, I love it. I think if I went Nikon d750 or 6d I would have been just as happy but shooting manual and the lowlight in this cannot be beat.

Kinda a big pixel dump but I started the thread so I feel its okay haha :)

First pictures I actually took were some B/W outside of a few test shots around my house. Went up to panama city for the hoildays in decemeber. Shot 90% in the drive there and back doing a lot of landscape. Recently was inspired by James Peterson for his dumb contrast B/W pictures. Was really happy with a lot of the pictures on B/W picture profile with bumped up contrast. Great out of camera pictures. These were last ones I had on my phone but I have about 100-200 pictures very similar.

Most of these are raw but downscaped to 2mb jpeg from sony app trasnfer and if edit was on my phone with snapseed

REALLY stoked about these. Took a few hundred pics that night but got a handful of good shots. Shooting at night with a 1.2 and manual focus is almost impossible for a moving subject. The last ones with tail light blur is my favorite. Looks exactly like Initial D animation.

This is what I mean lowlight. Shot this at 64k I think, 1.2 and was for 1 or 1.5 seconds HANDHELD at 2am. Looks really wonky but for just moonlight. You think this was just badly edit or even some expired film shot at mid day.

Even with the white balance to tungsten, its still warm? And regardless of warm/cool tones. Some companies just have some color cast to them. Canon is orange/red. Nikon is yellow/green but im not sure what sony is. Maybe its orange red as well & wow that 64k iso shot doesnt even show that much noise, i have a d750 but i never push it that hard.

I missed it, what Aony can are you shouting? An A7? I just used one again for a video interview and I have to say I can’t stand the menus. So convoluted and not intuitive at all. There’s too much digging that has to be done to get to simple things.

Also just some feedback on all these car pics. One of my favorite quotes I ever heard regarding photography is “nothing looks interesting at 5’ 9”.” Meaning stop shooting at whatever height you. Get lower or higher.

The other tip I’d say is (and this is easy with cars) is use some foregrounding or shoot through stuff. For one it adds depth to the image but it can help frame a subject, among other things.

Here’s an example:

Just two kids studying but I found an orange acrylic chair to shoot through to add some interest to an otherwise pretty boring activity.

In that one I used the bench he’s sitting on to frame the subject and add depth.

Yeah i agree also with getting lower, it really adds a whole dynamic to the photo but in some photos it does work to take it from standing positions but try to be working with the different lines of the car to draw the viewer in https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180208/cc76372325412c12973029fbf899514a.jpg

Interesting mix of images here, in a good and bad way.

Snagged this a few years ago at Zmax Dragway, 4 lane wide funny car shootout! Slow shutter speeds and a steady hand are a must for shots like this, and while I don't consider this print worthy, it was used on Speedhunters website.

On the second leg of a shoot for a major hotel chain. Fist Ac'ing my homie Nick Collura. Most complicated light set up we've ever done. Especially since we're doing it in Bethesda, Birmingham, Miami, Houston, and Manhattan.

Follow me on IG to see the light set ups and see the adventure.

Just stumbled on this like the rest of you guys :)

I did a bit of photography in college but traded it all in for race car things. Getting back into photography a little here and there now, though. I pretty much shoot exclusively automotive stuff and nothing else.

Some of the older stuff before I sold my Nikon gear (D700 // 14-24 F4VR // 24-70 F2.8G // 80-200 F2.8D):

Ha, thanks. If you keep your eyes peeled, the gear setup is actually pretty affordable. I'm less than 2 grand invested into this set of gear.

For any strobe work (like the Suzuki shoot), I've actually started using LED work lights. I invested in a 2 strobe setup (alienbee AB800 and White Lightning X1600 coupled with a vagabond II inverter/battery setup) but it ended up being too clunky to haul around/set up. Plus, photographer markup on strobist gear is. absolute. insanity.

I’ve heard so many amazing things about those strobes. Im currently graduating college for photography in the summer & everyone in my class speaks about them. Glad to see they work great on cars!

They're nice but honestly, I don't think they're worth the money. They're like 400-500 dollars a light once you factor in the diffuser and light stand. Maybe they're more workable when you're working with a person since they don't have to squint but for automotive applications, you're better off just using more affordable options with dual purposes like a Milwaukee Rocket LED light stand (plus, it even uses the 18V batteries that they use for their tools!!).

I think the key to multi-strobe work is just source temp consistency. As long as all your sources have the same color temp and the light is properly diffused, it'll give you enough to work with. So keep the light setup the same and you'll be more or less safe.

Yeah constant (LED) light and strobes are two totally different worlds.

I used to use Alien Bees and Einstein’s but the whole set up is clunky, like you said. Plus the Cybersync is just plain awful compared to other triggers.

I personally use two set ups now depending on the shoot and the amount of moving that is involved. I’ll either go with Canon RT speedlights or Profoto.

The speedlights really are awesome. Being so compact and being able to place them anywhere is a huge benefit. Years ago there were just shit modifiers and gelling them to match ambient light or getting creative used to suck. But there are some greats modifiers out there now and Magmod is probably one of the best designed photography products on the market. There’s for sure not a more elegant gel solution. You can do a lot with just 2 or 3 speedlights. We’ve shot entire huge ad campaigns with just a few speedlights (or 8).

Profoto really are the best strobes on the market. You can get used heads on B&H to get you in the door too. First and foremost the speed ring is the best in the industry...by a lot. No other head has a easier to use speed ring. Period. Plus there’s every modifier under the sun and for pretty much every price range. I used 2 Pro 10 packs and 6 heads for the shoot I just did for Wahl. All the power in the world. I do actually prefer the B1 and B1Xs since it’s and all in one versus the B2s pack and head set up.

Elinchrom is another good set up but the speed rings aren’t as nice. Although their deep octo’s are nice af with a Profoto speed ring.

I could talk gear all day. Love it.

So I got a pretty vague question but how many of you guys shoot for a living or at least to freelance work? Im kinda over my job and want to focus on school more, I've saved more than enough to keep me going till my degree is up but I still want to make money on the side.

I built my PC years ago to do a bit of music/sound design and going to be going over it soon because the partion on my HD that had all my music and editing programs is destroyed. So will be doing a freshen up and start my OS from scratch. Had mac osx lion and using windows 8 now.

So now how do I go about getting into freelance work, I have a buddy who just opened his own studio to do off the street portraits for family, holidays pictures, and head shots. Going to see if I can maybe work for him to help him out. Other than that I was going to go out and just in general shoot more and brush up on my lightroom/PS. Do some work with friends for free and eventually start up a website for inquires. Figured I just need to invest in a good tripod, more batteries bc sony lol, maybe lights and another two lens since all I have is my old nikon 50mm 1.2 and 24mm 2.4. Probably get a lens adapter so I can use my canon lens and invest in a proper 50mm and some type of tele from sony.

Also want to get a cheap medium format camea because I think it be cool to eventually do studio work with film. My nikon f3 with something like fuji neopan is so clean but on medium format and scanned will be crystal clear.

I do freelance work, my goal is to continue this as a career. I still do have a 9-5 job but my photography is able to pay for my car or my camera equipment. Being in college has really opened up my eyes to the true life of being a freelance. Having learned from professors who’s shot for HBO,Puma & BMW. Learning what these shoots consist of or how getting paid works was really shocking. My professor who shoots for HBO doesnt get paid until 6months after he sends his invoice. In learning that, he said that in order to properly “survive” as a freelance. You need to constantly have photoshoots set up months in advanced because you obviously have rent/food/bills to pay & everything you do needs to be done in advanced to assure that you have money always available. Currently i take on about 3-4 shoots a month at $200/hr which is no where anything i need to cover living expenses. But as advice i would say start shooting with friends/family because if they respected you/your art. They would pay you. & not complain lol.

I’ve been 100% freelance for 6 years now. I’ve been shooting for about 12 years. The money is in advertising/commercial work. I turn down weddings/babies/family/event shit. It’s pennies. It’s a good way to cut your teeth, play with lighting, learn to direct people but ultimately you have to move away from that stuff if you want to be taken serious. Not that there aren’t wedding photographers out there making money, but that’s a hard grind (working every weekend? Fuck that) for clients who give zero shits about you, only themselves.

Here’s a couple pieces of advice:

Assist good photographers. Good as in good work, but also good as in they are willing to let you learn. Be up front and let them know what your plans are. You’ll learn more from veterans than anything else other than doing it yourself. I can pretty much set up any lighting set up (from any brand), camera, grip, etc etc that is out there and that’s because I’ve assisted. I still assist, but only two photographers.

Get your feet’s in the door with Art Directors at agencies. Ad agency work is where it’s at. Here’s an example. That Wahl shoot I mentioned, that shoot cost over $330,000. I got my day rate, plus usage that is more than what some people make in a year. ONE SHOOT.

That brings me to the next point. Don’t charge hourly (sorry Jo_Galezo). It’s fine for starting of but eventually you have to know your worth and you should be charging your Day Rate, Usage, Equipment, Storage, Travel, etc etc. It’s fine to underbid stuff early on to ge the job, but at some point you have to pay for shit. I had a client ask fro some crazy shit. It’s was a 6 month long shoot that I KNEW was crazy and they only way I’d do it is if the money was there. The estimate was like $100k. They didn’t have the budget for that BUT if I would have bid it less to get the job I would have LOST money. Not good business.

Avoid fashion. Unless that’s your thing. It’s HARSH. Especially in Manhattan and LA. A friend of mine is a semi famous fashion photographer in NY and the shit he tells me about fashion is depressing.

I still have a long way to go in my career, but its rolling at this point. Most big photographers will tell you it takes 10 years to build a brand well. It certainly happens overnight or some people but be in it for the long haul.

Amazing fact after fact & lol yeah no hard feelings, im 20 right now. Working with small people & they still laugh at my hourly price. My professors tell me about their day rates & all that stuff. I just have yet to network with the proper clients who have the budget. But great advice nonetheless! Do you have a website? I’d love to check it out

I feel like im on the same page as Jo_Galezo. Most of my photographer buddies who do pretty good work but nothing "commercial" all have regular jobs. Me and my coworker work at Fedex Office, he has buddy who is an express driver. Guy who runs my meet works in some type of brand development or something. Great with web design and graphics and another buddy who I said earlier is doing his own studio soon.

I doubt I'd want to do this as a living in the future but who knows were you end up at the end of the day but my main focus right now is school. I busted my ass off the last three years to save and build my car so I want a break from my 9-5 in a sense.

My coworker when he wasn't as busy now with work would do mainly portrait and event photography. Was never paid hourly but like you said charge biased on the agree date/time along with extra stuff like equipment, make up and even number of outfit changes.

Im not unfamilar with how the industry work and the environment. Knew a lot that when I used to do music but unlike that im not sure where the right direction is to go from just hobby to getting paid for your work. There isnt much self promotion from what ive seen for music which you get promotion networks to show your music, free music on soundcloud and more promotion with collaborations with other artist.

Ha, I could too. They're nice, it's just the inconvenience of strobe work that's a pain. The speedlight work seems to be a good way to go. I do work for myself and friends. When I show up on site, I do it without a permit so I prefer to run and gun rather than set up shop in case I'm kicked off. Setup time also increases probability of me being booted before I grab any images. The added challenge is definitely tricky for me.

I wish I can get my hands on a 24-70 2.8!

pfft.. go get one! I've gotten good enough at talking myself into buying things that I can no longer figure out whether it's bullshit or actual sound logic.

I talk myself into nice glass with the thought that I'll never lose money on good glass. It's a double edged sword how the lens market is. There's only a handful, if that even, number of options for us when we're shopping for good glass. The lack of competition and the slow lens design turnover makes for good value retention. Find good glass used and you'll almost never lose money on it if you're smart and buy at or below market value. I've had two 24-70 F2.8Gs and I ended up making a few dollars when I sold them each time. I had buyers in less than 3 weeks from listing too. It was essentially a free long term rental :rawk:

I've been working in low light a lot lately, might be time to get some lenses with larger apertures.

How is everyone posting there pics to insta? All my raw out of camera pics have so much detail but once I go from in camera download to my iphone with sony software all detail is gone (duh) and even if I go my computer to downscale then put on my iphone same thing.

I see some photographers and the pics they have on instagram look crazy sharp. Here is little before and after. I still have a roll of ektar in my f3 I need to finish before I can match up before/after in film. Probably one of first rolls ive ever shot on aperture only olympus I got for 25 bucks.

I edit on ACR & then export my jpegs at the highest quality & then i airdrop the photos to myself to retain quality > then post lol idk it stays pretty consistent for me

I'll be honest, I'm more of a regular dude that just enjoys photography as a hobby so I'm not invested/interested enough to shoot raw. I'm sure I would if I was more competitive but for me raw doesn't benefit me enough and the cons outweigh the pros. I shoot jpeg, edit mostly on mobile Lightroom/Photoshop (unless it's a paying client I'll use my laptop) and share right to Flickr degrading every step of the way until what you see here lol. I upload full res to IG and share at no more than 2k format. I'm sure if my gear had a consciousness it would not be impressed.

I typically take the edited photo from Lightroom and upload it to Dropbox then download to my phone. Keeps the photos the same size file Lightroom exports them as and they stay crispy on the phone and insta

Yes, the closer the better. Fuck it, put your life at risk. Seriously. No one gives a shit about something with little effort. I have a shot from a RZR race on my homepage where you can see the dirt on the left side of the frame. That dirt is from one of the MF’s almost killing me. Great shot though and I didn’t die. So.

Love the idea and thinking outside the typical car shot. Needs to be composed better IMO. I think there’s just too much bush/tree camera left.

I do my processing in LR, then upload them to my site which is built in Smugmug. I then download them from Smugmug to my phone in the size I want (full) and then post in IG.

Need to get my PC working that has lightroom so I can full edit and not use snapspeed on my phone. Finished this roll of ektar 100 and its butter. Basically 0 grain and probably with proper flatbed scanner and post sharping it be as clean as my DSLR.

This isnt bad straight out of the scanner with crappy jpeg compression. Probably amazing to edit the full negative in lightroom as a tiff.

Snapped these at Virginia International Raceway during a Formula 2000 race, I've been wanting to work on panning and
catching cars between trees for a while, these turned out decent for my first try. I'm pretty sure I used my 70-300mm lens for these.

I like the idea of th first shots. I would have went vertical though and made her larger in ththe frame while still getting a lot of trees and blue sky.

I’ve had the sigma 85 1.4 for almost 10 years. Great glass. I’ve been tempted to upgrade to the Art 85 but got damn that front element is huge. Need filters specifically for that lens which kinda sucks. I’ve shot with it though and it’s super contrasty and sharp.

Ya more film! Had another event the other day, had like 15mins of daylight left to shoot a 400 speed, came out good but rest of the night I shot my sony and had a terrible time shooting.

Anyone know a fix for mirrorless cameras and EVF where when shooting slow shutter speeds the screen doesnt go completly black? When I do a pan shot less than 1/50s I miss judge it and always comes out blury.

Every time I look at it I want to make another correction though.

This is one of my go to lighting set ups. When the light sucks and you want to add drama, add a sun. That’s a Profoto B1x with a magnum reflector. It edges everything out, adds sparkle and interest. Then my assists follows me/the action around with another B1x on a rolling stand as a full.
