heres what I HAD

AMD Athlon XT 1.15 ghz (266 FSB)
256 meg ram (pc 2100, ddr)

onboard video

then i got into some games and i added
128 MB ATI radeon 9600 video card
512 meg ram (bringing the total to 768)

i left the CPU the same

if I double the CPU speed, roughly, to 2.0 GHZ, will I notice a significant difference in being able to increase options / resolution in games? maybe faster loading times, etc? Or is it not worth the money....Would maybe more ram be a better investment?

Thanks Twitchy

PS if anyone has a spare socket A AMD processor for sale let m eknow

for what games? if your gonna get hardcore into the new and up and coming games,. thats not gonna be enough.. reason i hate computers....

hit up http://ocforums.com and go to the cpu forum.

Im a student/worker/ i wanna party, so sometimes i feel nerdy and wanna play with my computer, sometimes i dont..

Lets see.. i had a 1.6 pentium 4 cpu that i was overclocking to 1.9 a few months ago, then I bought a used pentium 4 2.53 gig cpu on ebay for 90bucks... slapped the aftermarket heatsink ( i had it on teh old 1.6) and overclocked this to 3.1gig. Overal Im happy. It boosted my games up on my old geforce 3, but i eventually took the plunge into spending $400 on a geforce 6800gt.... Im still running the same motherboard that I had for 2 years. sure it doesnt have all the new stuff, but its enough to rock.

a 2.0Ghz processor will blow your 1.15 AMD outta the water... but like Hyper said.. if your games are upperend and you need solid speed, then you may as well step up bro and just go for the big stuff....

Can you even put that 2.0 on the same motherboard as the 1.15? i doubt it... plus you need a faster bus speed for some serious loading speedup....

all in all, you would notice some gain, yes in loading... not resolution
bump up to a 2.8Ghz with 400 bus and you'll be havin fun

just got for the big 800 front side bus, and you will drop your jaw. but that does require a new mobo. a new hard drive would help to something like a 7200rpm 8mb cache ata133 or serial.

its to play doom 3, half life 2, and newer games like that

I have doom 3 running fantastic on 800x600 resolution in high quality

thing is im not huge into games and i dont care if its the highest I can run them, i just want a cheap CPU upgrade to tie everything together

to change from my 266 FSB I need a new mobo though, right?

a 2ghz amd processor will be good =P
2ghz intel will suck it hard and blow chunks faster than a wood chipper.
something like an amd 64 3200+ or 3000+ (1.8ghz/2ghz actual speed)would be great for you
cheaper than thast you could get a athlon xp mobile, they overclock nicely and are very cheap.

i dont think amd made a 1.15ghz processor. you can try overclocking your processor if your ram is up for it.

also, those games you listed are more video card intensive. more ram would help you in those games. overclocking your video card may help also.

what i would do if i were in your shoes, is to get a 256mB stick of ram for now and save up for a new cpu/ram/mobo upgrade later down the road when its financially convenient.

yeah....well the processor I have is an 1800 and it says clock speed is 1.15ghz

i saw some nice CPUS that say 333 FSB or higher, but that isnt compatible with my motherboard unless I get a new one right? (cause mine says 266- the bus speed is the MOBO not the CPU right?)

just get an athlon xp 1700+, I've got mine running at 2.3ghz from the stock 1.3 or 1.4, and this is just with a shitty heatsink. If I had my watercooler hooked up, I could easily hit 2.5. Plus it'll blow the balls off most p4's, comparable one's anyway
