I was wondering how many miles does the 240sx last for or how many miles are on your car? I'm thinking bout getting one and I was just wondering. Thanks

Mine has 59,500 (or right around there). It has never had a major service. The last thing I did to it was get the oil changed and the next thing I will do is get the oil changed

I have heard of 240's going well over 200k miles without too much problems, but regardless you would probably want to look at a rebuild aorund this time.

The car Im thinking about getting is a 95 and it has 115,000 miles on it. Is it worth it for 3500? Thanks

I have ~157K...and will probably hit 160K by the end of my road trip up the East Coast this week...and then I have an autoX and a track day coming up this month...and I just won my class in an autoX this past weekend. I beat the hell out of it and it just seems to ask for more.

It sounds like a good deal, but kind of high miles for a 95. Unless this car is in great shape you may think about looking a little longer to find one with lower miles.

All in all though, it sounds like a good deal and as long as the car is in good shape you should be good to go.

I got 177,00 miles before my '89 died. It died at 110mph

my 91' has 80,000miles...and she's acting up already...she tends to bog down at idle and keeps acting like she wants to stall...could be a dying batt though...also, she hesitates in the low rpm's of first...i guess it's not always the same for everyone...but i still love her...

I am coming from VW's, which regularly reach 200,000 plus miles with out any rebuilds.
I am hoping my 1991 Fastback reaches about 200k miles. I figure If I keep on track with matienence, it will. That and not going over 90mph on a regular basis.
Oh, it's at 146k miles and running good.

Bought my '95 two years ago with 86,000 miles on it...it's now close to the 123,000 mark and still runs stronger than ever. I have had the timing chain done, but otherwise no other major knifework has been performed on it. I plan on a rebuild anyways so I'll propably just run this one into the ground...hehe

Keeping up on oil changes and other key maintenance is key to a long lasting engine.

I have 77k on my '97. I heard of someone that I believe is on the forum that got like 300,000 miles! Just make sure you change the oil every 3000 miles and it should run fro a long time. Nissan makes good long lasting cars.

Btw, about that '95 with 115k on it. The mileage is not really that bad for a 95, but the price is what would concern me. $3,500 for a '95? That is a $5,800 - $10,000 car, and seeing how the milage is not terribly high, it could mean that something is wrong with it. You should prolly check the car out really well before you just jump up and buy it.

Surely you meant to say 145,000 on your 89. If not, you need to brake that baby in already

My '91 has 165,000, and had 123,000 when I bought it. It had a blown engine when I got it, the previous owner had overheated, cracked the head, and kept driving it until the pressure split the top the radiator, but I got it for $1,200. I put in engine #2, a junk yard special $500 with 70,000 mls. It was a sweet and strong running engine, however I hit a really hard bump in the road (hard, as in Duke's of Hazard I'm airborne hard) and unknowingly dinged my oil pan. The ding just happened to restrict the oil pick up. Several weeks later I was on the interstate I heard an odd noise. I pulled over to see what it was, and it wasn't audible without a load on the engine, so as I accelerated in 2nd gear cylinder #2 exploded. Luckily the junk yard honored the 90 day guarantee. They gave me engine #3 at no charge with ?,?00,000 mls. I didn't have time to install it, so the install cost $400. This engine smoked more than I do but it got me here to there and back again (while eating a few stock Mustangs along the way). I lost a water pump and overheated it didn't notice until the damage had been done. I cracked or warped the head, but I got it rebuilt for $800. So with the car and all major repair I only have about $3,000 in it. The fun factor is much higher than what I have in the car even if I've had really bad luck with the engines. (Sorry if this is too long winded)

Welp
I have a 91, and carfax says that the last reported milage to the state emissions checkup it reads was 6/2000 and it was at 178K miles.
The odmeter reads 67K (thats how it was when i bought it), and its got a 1990 engine in it.. (wtf...) so the body is AT LEAST at 200K and god knows whats on that engine... but she still pulls good, however ripping into the car (ie suspension...) is a bit tuff when everything is rust-welded shut. however, i am still keepin this monster, gunna make it an autocross king, and i am still gunnna have fun

Okay, laugh if you want, but I have a ka24e. The motor has about 180k on it and it still pulls strong and gets 26mpg, even with my constant daily commute abuse. No leaks. My point? Don't trip over the mileage if the motor was well maintained.

100K of well maintained "hard" miles, is much better then 50k of neglect and "weekend use" miles.

The bottom ends are pretty much bulletproof. But don't let the car overheat, aluminum heads on an iron block, aren't exactly a match made in heaven. Water pumps tend to go out about 100k and timing chains develop start up rattle at about 130k or so. Your mileage may vary.

Start up the motor, listen for that dreaded startup rattle that occurs, hopefully for a few seconds, but usually lasts for about 2/3 secs. This is caused by either broken timing chain guides, stretched timing chain, or low oil pressure. Broken guides, if the top one on your dohc can be removed easily, the bottom one is a bit tougher. The latter two would be expensive to fix. Warm it up, drive it around, rev it up, if the rattle persists, you can expect to do a timing chain job soon.

Take a look at the coolant, make sure you don't see oil or any have the coolant appear "brown". Sign of overheating or bad head gasket. Check the hoses.

While the car is running, look for any smoke coming out of the tailpipe. Black smoke means the car is running rich, too much fuel and not enough air. Usually means stuff like O2 sensors, MAFS, head temperature and coolant temp sensors are bad or going bad. White smoke is bad news, coolant is leaking. Blue or greyish smoke isn't good either, the seal on your slugs are starting to go.

Look for oily residue in the tailpipe. Pop open the oil filler cap on the valve cover, peek inside and look for "milky" residue or liquid, if you see it, blown head gasket is imminent or has already occured.

Check for oil leaks.

- front timing cover
- oil pan
- bellhousing
- oil pump
- around the spark plugs

Bring a spark plug socket, take em out, and take a look. Should all have an even color. No oil or carbon built up on the electrodes. White crust and crap is bad too.

Take a look around the fuel injectors, look for golden crusting or any liquid marks. Leaky fuel injectors are a common problem on KA's, more so on the sohc motor.

The cars probably have dirty MAFS and TPS at this stage and may idle rough. Check the condition of these. Look for crap built up around the harnesses and plugs. If the car was well maintened, the owner probably kept these pretty clean.

If it all seems good. Have your mechanic do a lemon check. He or she will probably go through the same process, but in more detail.

Sorry for the long post, but thought I'd pass on what I've learned from the forum members around here as well as my own experiance.
