S12 cat hump delete

After driving my car on the track with a helmet on and having my head hit the roof I am looking for the best way to get rid of the cat hump in my S12. I was leaning towards just taking a big ass hammer to it then adding some 3/16 steel to reinforce where the side mount brackets will sit. Is there a better way to go about this process?
