Has anyone written a walkthrough or guide on how to install these? I really have no idea what im doing, and no FSM.
And to those who have installed new guage faces, how long did it take, was it a real pain in the ass?

i know that myself and aceinthehole have both installed them,
basicly just take out your whole gauge piece, i think 3 screws need to be taken out, make sure you take off the piece wround your steering column first or itll be a bitch to get out, the indiglos if you got them from indiglogauges.com should fit over the original gauges, then just find good power and ground source, i used my cruise control wire as the power sourcce and the ground through the dimmer switch, i would much rather use a real ground, and maybe the power from the stereo or fuse box, but im too lazy to re-open the dash, itll take a couple tries to get the gauges over the needle, but they will fit

if you have any problem you can hit me up on aol or somethin and ill help you through, its really not that hard,
oh and be sure you unplug all the wires in the back so u can get the whole unit out, its alot easier than having to do it in your car. mught wanna go pick up some new bulbs too for the odometer casue it looks better with blue lights on the backround instead of the poopy yellow/white ones
:!: dont use the non-indiglo white pieces for the warning lights, keep the black inserts in there, they look like shit ne ways with them on

this'll prolly get moved to tech.... but here's my old write-up of it:
"
LoL... my sister was supposed to give me her hi res camera since her boyfriend had a better one than she did... she's since broken up with him and won't give me hers. mine sucks, but here's what they sent me:
http://members.aol.com/pjcorrales/gauge_install/gaugefaces.jpg
and the finished product:
http://members.aol.com/pjcorrales/gauge_install/finish.jpg
the install wasn't bad. there were some clearance issues like with the EL connectors:
http://members.aol.com/pjcorrales/gauge_install/clearance.jpg
You can also see I lost one of the screws (although I'm decent enough at taking the dash apart so if I ever find it I can screw it in )
anyways, the wiring was easy, I just spliced it into the dimmer switch, which was the closest power/ground anyways:
http://members.aol.com/pjcorrales/gauge_install/dimmersplice.jpg
red/blue is positive
black is obviously negative
niftiest part is I didn't have to remove the needles. just slide the gauges onto the odo reset and time adjustment poles, rotated the needle so I could get it to slide into the gauge, and slid the gauges in.
http://members.aol.com/pjcorrales/gauge_install/slideface.jpg
notched the case to run the indiglo wiring so I wouldn't have to remove my bulbs and run the wires through that hole.

the instructions were pretty crappy. No pictures, and they're pretty vague (they generalize so they can ship it with every set they sell, non-car specific.) I glanced at it, and laughed at the part where it said : "If your gauges are backlit only, you may want to leave your bulbs intact (I actually did this too), this will illuminate your needles, and looks cool at night with the indiglo faces lit." The instructions also suggested to wire the power from the parking lights.... oh well, so much for trusting instructions written in Comic Sans...
The gauges look pretty nice. They aren't as bright as I thought they'd be, but it isn't dark out so it's not like I can tell that yet. When it's dark out I'll get a lit shot.
My only complaint is that I can hear them whining or whirring or something... it's no big deal, as soon as the car is started it's completely undetectable. I'll have to see if I wired something wrong (which I doubt) or if it goes away. It might just be power draw off the dimmer switch.... so maybe I should try hooking it up to a more solid power source...."
Update: The whining noise doesn't seem to be as noticeable when the gauges are in "Green" mode, and I've since cleared out my needles and painted the backs silver instead of orange. The goal is blue or white lit needles over the green indiglo gauges, but I haven't had the time to get back into the dash to do it. (Right now I have normal 194's in the dash which lights up a bit yellowish).
Also... I was wondering about the white faced overlays that you used to be able to buy for $30 on ebay.... since the numbers were notched a bit larger than the actual numbers, I was thinking that those installed over the indiglows would give an indiglo outline of the number at night, like the reverse EL gauges out now. If I can find a set cheap enough I might try it out. The last thing is that I want to try the import intelligence needles over that if it works

I took the Installs and Reviews section off the forum because I am going to make something even cooler for the site for Installs and Reviews.
If you could, please email me the pictures and the writeup to my
[email protected] and I will put it up once I get the site redesign done. Thanks!

something cooler eh??
I'll see if I can't get better pictures and re-write the writeup (although my roomate has my digital cam for the weekend...) since I'll be digging back into the dash in a couple weeks to rewire basically the whole car. I can get some stuff of the stereo connections while I'm there too.

The only thing im not clear on is how to get the gauge cluster out in the first place :\

S13 or S14?? I'll probably include that in the writeup I do for West when I get my digi cam back, for my S14....
I've heard you have to drop the steering column on the S13 to get to the gauge cluster though....

S13, onnnne last question. is there a fuse or something built into these? what stops me from blowing them?

I have an S13, and I installed the white faced gauges, and lazer diode kit (makes the needles light up neon colored). Its a real bitch, ..especially unbolting the 2 bolts that hold the steering column up (hard to get off, then back on), and also it was a real pain to disconnect the switches (dimmer, popup light button, etc) from the wire harness. Its hard to get your hands back there.
My advice to you. While you have the gauge out, and apart.....use a shopvac with the small brush attachments..and clean all the dirt and dust from inside the dash housing. Also, carefully clean the gauge cluster, and use some plastic polish on the clear plastic guage cluster cover (this will buff out those frosty stains left by Armor-All overspray). When bolting the steering column back up, have someone hold it up for you, or you may strip out the bolts ( like I did with one of them).

Oh yeah, also...while you have the gauge cluster apart.....replace the bulbs that backlight it with some hi-performance ones.

I found that some good quality red bulbs with red bulb condoms make for a a nice deep red "Audi-ish" dash. Experiment with colors and you can end up with a really nifty looking dash. I'm about to try getting some LED 194 bulbs, white on the outside and blue in the middle
