Hi Guys,

I'm working my way through an SR20DET 3071R build at the moment for a track only car. The rebuilds I've done in the past I've had the luxury of being able to run in it for 1k km's prior to revving the motor with any spirit.

I spoke to my local tuner who told me he could run it in on the dyno for 3 hours, however I'm not totally comfortable with this. In my opinion, a full rebuild should be driven in for a lengthy amount of time, not just 3 hours.

What have you done in the past? Would you be comfortable doing a 3 hour run in on a 15k motor?

Cheers :2f2f:

$15,000 SR20...? lmfao

Dyno break in should be fine, you can vary the load on the engine and do lot's of engine braking. Rings seat pretty quickly on a turbocharged car. I rebuilt mine, let the car run for 30 mins to bleed coolant / break in camshafts per HKS spec dropped the oil and drove it from Florida to Kentucky the next day lot's of short burst load and varying rpm / engine braking. Basically don't cruise at a set rpm... Changed the oil when I got there and again after 1500 miles. No issues

daily driving my fresh build...took about 30 miles before I saw rings holding well...150 miles now little boosting and doin great...still keeping gentle till 1k miles

I'd actually prefer to break in on the dyno. you can vary the load and have an engine fully broken in within hours instead of waiting 1k miles.

I agree with brndck dyno is a much better alternative, if the rings seat and its all up to temp and everything is working properly your good to go, 3 hours on a dyno even seems a little excessive, maybe use the last hour or so and do some power pulls lol

I use a $800 motor to make 550rwhp pulls and drive it 30,000 - 50,000 miles.

So with that statistic in mind, an 15k motor should make (550 * 15000/800) pulls (10,000 horsepower) otherwise you are wasting $14,200

I agree, the dyno break in is a hard type of break in. And as long as he has the tools available to confirm you're good. You don't want to run through the motions and not be sure.

The motor is in reality, an SR22 however I did include the rest of my engine components in that price :D

Also - best of luck revving that motor to 9k all day long on the track buddy

Thanks for all the replies, I hadn't heard of a dyno break in before, probably because I'm fairly new to aftermarket rebuilds.

I guess I'll just have to trust the dyno!!!

Proper way to break in an engine :

Run mineral oil, not synthetic.
Must be under load, and then slow down under load so that the engine produces vacuum and seats the rings. Do this for ~300 miles and progressively take the engine RPMs higher and higher and introduce it to boost in a progressive manner as well. Don't give it 15lbs right off the bat lol

Brake her in on the dyno!
