View Full Version : Compression testing on a new engine...
Hey guys!
For a motor that's lying around for weeks or months, with closed TB, does 105 to 120 psi on all cylinders sound right?
According to S14 FSM, hot, a SR should have between 128 and 156 psi of compression, with max 14 psi difference between cylinders

TB was closed? that affects the reading.... no oil circulation for awhile, that affects the reading.... hard to say.
affects the reading to lower the real value? (that's what I would think)

right, it would read lower than normal having sat for an extended period of time.

yes, that stuff will cause a lower value.
Oktay.. I HIGHLY recommend you pull the oil pan on the motor before you install (or buy, if possible) to check for shavings/dents, etc

yea, its not like it takes very long to pull hte pan, besides itd save you a lot of money/time if it comes out with half a pound of metal in there
Well, the pan is dented... I had the intention to swap it with one of mine...
there is a 30 warranty (to check if nothing's out of the ordinary...)
I'll let you guys know, espacially you, Kevin. ;)

when i pulled my old pan it looked immaculate. then i dumped the oil out and looked closely and it looked like i'd been using it to pan for gold...
little shavings everywhere.
there was even a full, complete, unbroken LEAF in there. yes, a LEAF from a TREE.

a leaf in the oil? you sure it wasnt in the pan you drained the oil into?
Anyhow, check that motor out Halo, better to be safe, than have a spun rod bearing.
I guess... Anyways, I'll check that out when I have a chance... I have 30 days to get it running. :p
Thanks guys!!! I took out my oil pan today...
It's metal fury in there... I am going to return the engine...
might go S14 SR or N/A... dunno yet.

i know it was in the pan, cuz it got stuck in the drain hole.
how the hell?
did the previous owner drive with no filter? and then a leave got in and made it past the intake valves, not get burned, and then slid between the rings and the cylinder wall? no way
did the oil change guy shove a leaf through the drain hole? who knows?
afaik, i'm the first one to take the pan off that motor (the rtv was very old and very factory looking)
anyway, sucks about that motor halo. reminds me of..., well, mine. :)
meh...
I can get an S14 SR20DET for 400$(cdn) more if I can't have a decent S13 in exchange.
