Starter only clicks

Really weird problem on my sr20det ive been experiencing for a good year now. My car always starts up fine. After long drives, sometimes the starter will only click and it takes at least 5-10 key cycles for the starter to finally engage and start the car. I have replaced the starter with a new sr20 one and it does the same thing. Once in a while after a long drive I cannot get the starter to engage at all, starts first time with a push start.

Any input would be great.

I redid it when replacing the starter, but its worth looking over again. Just weird that it never has this problem when the engine is cold

Clutch interlock relay?

The starter is usually grounded by the chassis and not a wire. So it's most likely, spade connection on starter, clutch pedal switch, interlock relay, dying starter or bad battery and or connection. You could start with any of those things, affected by heat.

MY car was auto and converted to manual, so the interlock relay is bypassed. That being said it sounds like it could most likely be an ignition switch?

ordered a new switch, will update thread when I install it. My battery is good, starter has been ruled out, connections are clean and clutch safety switch relay doesn't apply.

Curious as my bone stock 92 does the same thing after replacing the starter. I just have to keep clicking the ignition until it starts. But mine does it cold or hot.

i actually found a ignition switch sitting around the garage, ill let you know if it fixes the issue. However, I found a new one for $10 on ebay

UPDATE: replaced the ignition switch with a spare one I had sitting around, have not had any issues so far. MY old starter switch had 3 wires cut and re crimped on it for some reason. The extra resistance from the crimps might have been to blame.

For a couple of years, I had the same problem. Tried/tested all sorts of things. One being the ignition switch. I changed it out. The problem wasn't as bad, but was still there. Months went by, the problem kept getting worse.
I swapped ignition switches again, this time, I didn't hook up all of the shit that was tied into the key hot wire. Car started flawlessly every time. Still does. All of the shit that was tied into that hot wire, I put on a couple of relays. 4 AEM gauges, turbo timer and a Bee*R was cooking the ignition switch.

Moral of the story, don't tie a bunch of shit directly into the hot wire.
