Last Sunday I realized someone broke into my BMW 335i overnight and went through the center console and glove box. There were no signs of forced entry. It was as if I had left my car unlocked, but it would be very unusual for me to forget to lock my car. Luckily they didn't take anything (nothing really to take), only left some paperwork spread across the seat.
I later found out that several cars on my block were broken into, all without force. They were all nice cars with keyless entry and alarms - an Escalade, Mercedes SUV, etc. Everyone's cars were parked in their driveways, so we would have heard if any alarms had triggered. The criminal(s) siphoned gas out of a couple cars, and stole registration and service records from one.
Has anyone heard of a device that would allow criminals to spoof electronic key signals? Maybe I'm naive, but that seems pretty sophisticated for what I'm assuming are kids breaking into cars looking for electronics. And if there is some device like this, wouldn't they be able to start the car with it as well?
