I will keep this super simple.
I'm basically on a journey to build a reliable/fun street class time attack car.
First goal is to beat my track times set with a e46 m3 using same tires : Hankook RS3 255/40/17

Biggest thing I wanted to fix was corner exit oversteer and excessive roll.
I bought some whiteline sway bars to install before the next track event, but did not received them in time.

The day started fine but after revving high on that bank, oil started shooting out from valve cover. I think the ebay catch can I have was too restrictive.

three downpipe bolts decided to shoot out after continuous heating/cooling/vibration. had to tow the car home :-/

Best time of the day was 2:03.8.
Still have a lot to improve. hopefully I can get my sway bar/ oil catch can in by next track day.

Are the door bars constrictive? I noticed that you maintained complete door panels so that puts the door bars close to your body. Does it bother you at all?
I want to keep my door panels too and am debating whether to do it like you did or not.

installing the factory oil separator or utilizing a s14 SR valve cover will help with pushing oil. These engines like to do that without either or.

I see the complexity in what you are considering. my cage is actually a Enjuku kit for s13. So money was an issue affecting my choice. If money was not a factor, I would have definitely space it away. Plus, at the time, My plan was to run full interior to run in a lower group but I just got lazy and decided not to put the interior back.

Yea definitely, I'm looking into modifying my valve cover to pull some pressure out. Thanks.

Changed water pump pulley
https://s3.amazonaws.com/static.fixphotobucket.com/albums/uu108/battery1882/0811162013_resized_zpsrmdxxbbj.jpg
Added stock oil separator to see how much better it is. If this doesn't do much, I'm gonna have to modify the valve cover
https://s3.amazonaws.com/static.fixphotobucket.com/albums/uu108/battery1882/0811162014_resized_zpsfbbljcbp.jpg
Added whiteline sway bar on the front.
When I installed both whiteline fr/rr, car oversteered just as before.
I ended up with 27mm front and 15mm on the rear. Hopefully this setup works better.
Is anyone else going? I think there is nissan challenge this weekend.

Swaybars made a big difference?
It did, as far as tuning out some of the oversteer. I still do have some oversteer on corner exit so I'm gonna try softer rear spring rates. It's currently 8/6.

I went back out to ACS only to find more trouble.
https://s3.amazonaws.com/static.fixphotobucket.com/albums/uu108/battery1882/0813160749_resized_zps4wxx76n8.jpg
First session after warm up lap, my intercooler hose blew. No big deal, just clamp it down tighter and go out on the next session.
Session 2: as I finish my lap 1, car started to lose power. I look at the temp gauge and it was pegged hot. I try to pull over to a safe area but car eventully died and never started back up.
Looking back, I think my timing was set wrong (on retard) which caused my engine to run hot. Once it got hot and built pressure, one of my radiator hose clamp was not fully tight as all of the coolant leaked out.
I verified this by pressurizing coolant system.
compression on cylinders are 90-90-90-20. probably seized the piston as well.
It's all my fault. having a warning gauge would have been nice in retrospect.
I'm gonna try to figure out where to go from here. maybe another SR or VQ.
Definitely planning on keeping the engine stock as possible.

I agree.
I was actually talking to a buddy that has set of defi gauges with warning lights for his car and he told me he saved his engine one time from oil starvation.
I always thought they were waste of money.. time to change my mind.

I got the idea from slider2828's thread but I believe I can use the rear port for crank vent, kind of like s14 setup. S14 valve cover definitely has advantage with sloped rear to push fluid towards the front vent but I believe this setup would work too.
If it doesn't do the job, I would have to source a s14 valve cover. This is cheapest method so might as well try.
I will report back after getting the aem ems tuned. Looking for a tuner right now..

I like the safety wire method for the o2 housing. What did you do for the nuts for the turbo to manifold? Is it difficult to drill the bolts for the safety wire?

yeah I'm tuning the car this friday so hopefully s4 will perform well.
I used stock nuts and locking plate on the turbo to manifold side. I've had alot of problems in the past using aftermarket headers where those back out, but with stock manifold, it should be good.
To drill the bolts, you just hold the bolt tight and use drill press.

I've been battling high exhaust temp and I have opened my engine after running this tune for a few track days.
Bad news : piston edge melted from excessive temp.
Chris @ Natural Aspirations is a nice guy and he is willing to help, but I would not go back to him for another tune.

This time I went with Nexen SUR4 because I've never tried them and heard many good things. They handled great and did not get greasy as quickly as the rs3s.

Arrived at the track and signed up for Nissan Challange.

All of the work paid off and I had a problem-free day (almost) which is always nice.
Ended up beating my M3 time and also won the nissan challenge class 2. :)
I'm looking forward to next event! first I need to change my turbo gasket :(

You'll love the S4 cams, best sr20 cams out there.
I've had a lot of problems in the past using aftermarket headers where those back out, but with stock manifold, it should be good.
To drill the bolts, you just hold the bolt tight and use drill press.
It's funny that I'm quoting myself.. Well the manifold to turbo bolts, as well as, turbo to elbow bolts all backed out a little (heard from exhaust leak). This was going to be a tough battle against the heat and vibration.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Safety wired bolts backed out tiny bit (verified by re-torquing) and obviously couldn't move from that point on.
Out of 5 bolts that are on the turbo to elbow, only 4 were safety wired, one that was not wired backed out good couple turns.

I think you might be better off running studs with nuts instead of bolts.

why are the bolts popping out like that?
Usually daily driving / wide open throttle for 10-20 seconds at a time doesn't really affect the bolt coming loose as much.
With this car, it's always boosting and staying at a higher temp. (around 1000-1500 degrees Fahrenheit and above 4000 rpm for 10-20 mins at a time) On top of that, I'm shaking the car left and right going through the turns. This puts a lot of stress on all of the turbo parts.
My turbo to manifold bolt loosening was actually caused by one of the broken tabs (oem locking tab) that hold the nut in place. I should have safety wired them looking back.
I think you might be better off running studs with nuts instead of bolts.
Thanks for the suggestion but I've welded the flanges now so it shouldn't come off. (hopefully) if it does, make sure to tell me "I told you so" :)

I went to denco (http://www.dencosales.com/index.html) yesterday to buy some alumalite / aluminum composite panel but they didn't have anything thicker than 6mm. I am gonna search little more to look for it. worst case scenario, I'll buy plywood.

Hi, I just wanted to let you know im your new biggest fan. I could have warned you about the 4 turbo to manifold nuts being the #1 issue. After years of troubleshooting my only option was to safety wire, but when I had my turbo out last time I didnt even want to try to figure it out I decided I will just weld them together next time they come apart. I cant wait to see you at the next Nissan Challenge event. I saw your car up close at SOW but I had not seen your build thread til now. Woooo. I love 240 time attack builds done well.

Stage 8 fasteners seemed to have kept my turbo attached for a few track days now.
The big thing is running that bracket from the downpipe to the transmission mount/crossmember and taking weight off the turbo.
The next time I have to take it apart I, too, am just going to weld the turbine housing to the manifold and call it.

I used aluminum square tube to save weight on the bottom and welded some steel tubing to the bash bar.

stood on it to make sure it will handle the downforce.
I tore the middle of the panel and it started spreading so I reinforced it it with aluminum plate and carbon plate on top. Maybe I can use it for gopro mount in the future.

I would advise against using a S14 pump on a S13 SR20. The impellers are designed differently and the S14 pump actually flows less when used on a S13 SR20 and does cause cavitation at a much lower RPM

Man.. I wish I would have asked before purchasing/installing it. :-/
I would like to know little more in detail if you could elaborate though. I would think "flows less" mean that the impellers are smaller given same rpm between s13/14 engines, wouldn't that cause less cavitation? unless there's something going on inside the block.. or if the blade design is different.well, let me know! Short of it is; S14 impellers are shorter when used on the S13 head due to the different casting between the heads. What this translate to is the impellers themselves simply do not reach far enough into the waterpump housing to have enough surface area to "pump" the water. Its like sticking half your hand out the window vs sticking all your hand out the window. Only half your hand actually gets acted on by the wind in the first scenario.
Look at them side-side. The details are not immediately apparent.

Yeah I honestly don't know where the misinformation came from saying that the s14 pump was better for s13 engines, I've never bought into that myself. It's better to retain a s13 pump but run an oversized water pump pulley instead to slow it down slightly.

I was having my car tuned over the weekend and we saw some knocking around 4-5000 rpm. We had to end the session early.
Looking back, I'm wondering if the water pump may have caused problem somewhere and brought the cylinder temperature up.. Coolant temp was fine. Regardless, I'm changing the pump back to s13 one and going over the car to find any issues.

I was always skeptic when people would tell me that, I've personally never recommended it. Glad i followed my gut instinct.

I really appreciate your comment ralliartrsx! Now I definately see why s14 one would not work properly.

You can see that the difference in depth when the pump is mounted. I would think this would either A. not move enough fluid or B. cause cavitation, or C. both.

Past Friday, I went to Koji @ Auto Talent for yet another tune as I noticed extremely high exhaust temperature with my previous tune.
I'm glad I went. I found out that the car was making a lot less power than I thought.. around 260hp . Koji thought that it was due to my compression being high (9:1).
Car does drive much better with Koji's tune along with idle/part throttle all improving.
Easiest solution would be to run E85 and change out the injectors/lines but since my run group does not allow that, I'll be taking a longer route. I will be lowering my compression (1.8mm head gasket), change out the intake manifold (freddy), and change out the fuel rail and injectors.
I'm somewhat bummed by the whole situation but need to move forward.

With your turbo the stock intake manifold should make more bottom end without much loss up top though.

That line makes absolutely no sense. 9:1 on piss CA gas should not cause any sort of knock issues. Also, a bump in compression should see power INCREASE across the board.
Unless the tune prior to going to koji was not appropriate, you should both be making more power and the car should be more tractable in and out of boost.
Ask koji what he means by that statement. He should be able to eek out atleast 300WHP with almost as much torque with no knock issues.

I built the car originally for redline time attack until I found out about the Nissan challenge. I like running with corner3 and speedventure so I think I'm gonna stick to it this year.
I would like to do the global time attack but the rules conflict a little.

I was not being clear. So on the previous tune, it was knocking really really bad, Koji was able to fix most of that. Koji's dyno read 15% lower than the previous tuner's dyno, making my final # same as previous tune.
9:1 theoretically should make more power but for whatever reason, it started knocking as soon as boost started settling in. Before setting up a dyno time, Koji explained that from his previous experience, 9:1 usually knocks bad and stated that my set up will not make more than 280 @ the wheel.
I'm guessing the previous tuner pulled timing to avoid knock, which caused my egt to get so high.
I've sourced most of the parts which involves dropping CR to 8.5:1 (head gasket) along with bigger/better injectors, pumps, and intake. I'm planning on doing these after the 4/1 event and go back to Koji.
I really appreciate your concern! Feel free to comment on whatever!
What is the full existent you went too with weight reduction?
I have not done much of that which I need to do eventually. NO AC, gutted interior/ sound deadening, lighter battery, titanium exhaust is about all I have so far. Car weighs around 2600lbs with full cage which is not bad..

IF my $.02 matter at all,
From what I'm reading & previous experience the high EGT's you are experiencing (how hot are your EGT's?) are due to high back pressure. My Car has factory internals with a 1.5mm HG Factory S14 T28 with Denso 550cc injectors. at ACS I was seeing EGT's as hot as 810*C (I don't have a cat) I was reading my EGT's 1.75" away from cylinder 3 exhaust port. Between ACS & Buttonwillow I made a test to test the theory & got some success. I port matched my Manifold to my head, Manifold to the Turbo gasket, turbo gasket to the turbo inlet & made a better transition from the elbow flange to the bellmouth. at Buttonwillow i never saw EGT's hotter than 760*C on the same exact tune before my waterpump checked out. I run my car pretty rich too to help with the hot EGT's I overheard a few people saying i'm burning rotary type fireballs after the bank. (wish i had pics) and a few guys at buttonwillow said the same thing.
I would recommend welding a 38 or 40mm external wastegate to a ported stock manifold for best results with the GT2871R it'll help bring those EGT's down quite a bit that's what I'll be doing for my car.

I am interested in your finding but my egt temp was up to 950 Celsius and my sensor is mounted after the turbo. So I think it was definitely timing related. I will find out more at the next event and report back.
I am considering the ext. wastegate option though!

Hey Marphie,
That is ebay rubber lip. I wouldn't recommend it if you are using it for high speed as it will deform under high speeds.

It's hard to see but first set of graphs is high boost (19psi) with hood open (350hp 330hp with hood closed) /low boost (15psi) with hood closed (291hp)
Second set of graphs is before the head gasket/ ID injectors / Freddy manifold (260hp) / after (350hp)

Upgrading flange studs to arp and adding locking tabs as well as stover lock nuts. It may also have to do with my cusco engine mounts, chopped the test pipe and added a flex pipe.

Upgrading flange studs to arp and adding locking tabs as well as stover lock nuts. It may also have to do with my cusco engine mounts, chopped the test pipe and added a flex pipe.
What did you use to keep yours together?
I can almost promise it will pull apart again.
The key to all the woes is simply the exhaust to transmission mount bracket. That and a flex in the downpipe is what cured my problem.
If you think about it, the turbo is in a constant state of trying to pull away from the manifold (turbo is hanging down off the manifold). Couple that with several thousand heat cycles and vibrations and no matter type of adamantium you use for hardware, the turbo and manifold will inevitably separate. The problem is exacerbated with more power (heat) and track usage (heat cycles). The studs is what the issue is btw, and NOT the mounting/locking hardware. The studs themselves see several thousand heat cycles and end up stretching and contracting hundreds of thousands of times with no cooling being available. Once the studs are compromised, the locking hardware is useless. And this is why I ALWAYS recommend OEM Inconel studs and not any aftermarket bling bling trash. That or the TSE $100 kit from the miata guys (Inconel studs and stage 8 locking hardware).
Not sure how many times I have said this to folks lol. a few options
1) weld a bracket to the compressor housing and suspend the turbo/manifold combo off the engine
2) Run the exhaust/transmission bracket with flex section
3) Weld them together.

Just put in a flex pipe, get a stainless one for 10 dollars or so off ebay and have it welded in.

That does not solve the inherent problem.......especially for a track day vehicle :hs:

well explained! I have mine welded. I have titanium cat-back and flexible hose on the down pipe. It was still backing out.
Cheapest solution is factory hardware + tack welds. or v-band. If you go back few pages, you will see how mine was welded.
From start to finish is a fun read.
Thank you!

Enjoyed the build so far. If you're interested, there is another time attack league called racefreely (ig: racefreely) that has events at grange motor circuit. The next event is July 22. I've taken my car to the canyons a few times but this is going to be its first (and my first) track shakedown.
Anyways, keep up the good work! Those look like good times and the car looks good, too!

Has anyone else experienced oil return hose tearing? Only thing I can think of is; I put stress on that hose when I was putting on the turbo assembly.. But it appears to be very clean cut around where it was clamped.

use something other than a worm clamp. they have a sharp edge on them that can cut the hose. try using an OEM spring clip, or the OEM wire clamp.

Did you pound the firewall to get full articulation in the wheel and tire? or maybe tire size is smaller?

Hey welcome to Nissan Challenge. I have 18x9.5 +22 (265 30 18) and 15mm spacers in front (circuit sports s14 FLCA) and have no issue with it rubbing on the firewall, only on the front wheel well area.

Don't slide my mom,
https://image.ibb.co/jsuz67/20180427_174813.jpg
This wing is actually from an evo10. When I took the measurements, evo mount width was the closest to the s13 hatch, and the height seemed to work out perfect. (time attack rule book states that wing cannot be higher than the roof, plus 3d shaped wings are effective if it's mounted lower than the roof). There are three studs on each wing posts that goes through the trunk and uses nyloc to hold it in place. it's pretty sturdy. rule of the thumb is to be able to stand on the wing.
Rear diffuser will be added sometime later. I have not had time to work on it.
I do not think cables are necessary as it does not flex much. I think that's mainly for looks (I have not had personal experience with it).

On springs, would you go 8/6 or 10/8 or 12/10? I am thinking sticking with 10/8's... 12/10 probably just over kill....

Hey slider! that's good news!
On the springs, I would definitely go softer. I'm currently 8/6 with front splitter and rear wing (total weight 2800 w/ me in it). I think that might be a good baseline for you. I personally like soft setup ,but if you are running slicks, harder springs are definitely way to go.

Hey Slider,
Nissan Challenge is very supportive and is truly friendly atmosphere! You should come out to drive with us.
Speaking of video, I 'll leave it here on the bottom.
To recap Global Time Attack :
Day 1. Car was running strong and during practice I ran 1:54.5x. This was my first time driving butttonwillow with this car so I thought to myself 'I have few seconds to reduce'
After noon, car starting smoking from the engine bay. I was chasing the problem.
Day 2. I found out that it was actually from the high pressure power steering hose benjo fitting which had a hairline crack. it would squirt oil right on to the header every time I turned the steering wheel. :rant2:
I decided to pack up and hope for more solid run next time.

I'd love to bring my drift car to Chuckwalla and do some grip racing in it. That's the closest racetrack to where I live. How often are their events?

It had little more grip but 200tw nowadays are like 100tw lol.
I would say grip was 1/10 better than Nexen Sur4G. Feedback wise, NT01 had alot more feedback (tires screeching towards the end of the limit).

They have events probably every month. Bad thing is that it gets way too hot during the summer time as you would probably know. So realistically, somewhere between Sep.- April would be ideal. I don't think they have any drift days there though.. check out nissan challenge :

I was being stupid and locked my brakes, flatspotting the tire. Also during the final match, my charge pipe blew. I ended up earning 2nd place. I did set the fastest laptime for this class. :duh:

Read through the entire build thread (while I should be working, LOL). Awesome progress. Small note, I ordered the JUN e-fan water pump for my SR. Turns out, it's just a P11/B15/SR20VE water pump with a custom pulley, LOL. Jokes on me. Now I know if it ever goes out. Life lesson I want to share with anyone considering it (so they don't spend stupid money on it).
My time attack S14 build has been taking me forever, but I'm aggressively trying to get it back on track by the end of the year. So hopefully I'll see you at an event or two in 2020. I'd really like to check out the Nissan Challenge. I'll have to see how my car will class there though (Limited RWD GTA / TT1 in NASA).
Keep up the good work! :bigok:

That's interesting.. I didn't know JUN had such part.. I hope the pulley is oversized at least..
I'm planning on running Limited rwd too 2019/2020 so I'll definitely see you!
As for Nissan Challenge, you will most likely be class 1 (assuming from gta limited), unless you run 200tw.

Yes sir, the pulley is definitely oversized and offset to work on RWD.
Awesome! I'm glad more and more S-Chassis are getting into grip racing! You on NissanRoadRacing as well?
Yeah, I looked at the rules, and I'll definitely be in class 1, ha ha.

Bummer. Good driving though! Looks like fun!
Do you have a diagnosis on the failure? Or any symptoms you may have noticed on the track prior to the failure?
Edit: Just went back through the thread. Maybe I missed something, but you mentioned you had some 'melted pistons' but were going to run it till it blows. Was that the same engine with the built bottom end? Any reason your not running a oversized oil pan w/ baffles and/or an oil cooler?
Good luck and I hope you can get it up running and back on the track soon.

Yes it was the same forged engine with piston problem. When I did the compression test, it didn't seem to have any compression issues though.
I had isr "tomei style" oil pan with baffles. It probably did something, but not enough. I'm still debating on what option to go with..

Competing in "limited class" Global Time Attack and class 1 at Nissan Challenge!

Here is the fuel system breakdown. I was intially seaching for an in-tank, dual-pump hanger setup until I learned about the newschool surge tanks housing 1-3 fuel pumps. I was getting some fuel cuts with slicks on corners with over 1.3G, so I figured surge tank was the perfect solution.
I'm shooting for 5-600hp but I was advised that the following list was bare minimum to break into 5-600 safely (especially with pushing lateral g's of over 1.5). Kaizen motorsports has knowledge and experience with this stuff so I chose to do everything Jose @ kaizen recommended. in Hindsight, I'm glad I did.
New stainless lines :
1/2" (-8) fuel feed
3/8" (-6) fuel return
Radium surge tank
aem 340 intank
walbro 450 dual intanks inside the surge tank
aluminum fuel rail
Injector dynamics 1350cc
AEM fuel Pressure regulator
AEM Ethanol content sensor
all lines are XRP crimped with XRP press.

I've seen them before but have not looked into it. I think what I have now should be good but I'll keep this in mind if there's any issue. Have you had any experience with them?

I bought one, its been sitting on a shelf since my car is in pieces.
I removed the slosh baffle inside the fuel tank and this mat will cover the majority of the floor of the fuel tank.
seems like a good/cheap alternative to volume tanks and secondary fuel pumps, but I guess i'll have to wait to render final verdict until my car is actually assembled
