View Full Version : Oem vs split fire S15 coils

Doing some changes to the car including a completely new wire specialties pro harness.
Last time on the dyno we would blow the spark blow out just before 500hp. Yes we tried replacing plugs as well as tightening the gap dowm.
The factory coils are from a 2001 S15 so they are 15 years old. Was going to replace them with either new oem S15 coils or Split fires.
Any one have any actual experience with testing split fires vs new oem coils?

Thanks

I had the same issue on my R33 RB27. Upgraded the OEM coilpacks to splitfire and HKS Twin Spark amplifier and all issues of spark blow out were gone. Car made 550awhp on pump and went from 622awhp on race gas to 742awhp after getting rid of the blow out.

Unfortunately your scenario also has a twin fire ignition added into the picture.

S15 coils are skinnier and the valve cover holes aren't as large to accommodate those.

Isn't the s14/15 valve cover the same?

No it isn't.

Weird, never knew that.

Regardless of the cosmetic difference the coils and wiring themselves are different. A S15 coil has the igniter built into the coil. It's not separate like a S13/14.

So back to new S15 oem coils vs these split fires.

Have you checked out the VAG/R8 coil option? They're pretty cheap ($25 each), just have to do the wiring or buy a premade pnp harness.

Have the option to get split fires over here but don't like the idea that you have to buy another whole set if one coil goes out.

No i haven't. You are referring to a Audi R8 I assume? $25 per child sounds great I they are a true improvement over factory S15 coils. I'm not so much looking for a cheap alternative as I am something that is going to work under higher boost levels.
Not being able to by a single coil from spitfire is a big down side.

I am ordering a completely new wire harness for the car from wiring specialties this week. It will be their S15 in a S14 pro harness.

LS coils and custom wires, ls coils easy to locate worldwide.

I know this is common with s13 and S14 but how would you make them work with a factory ecu on a S15?
s15 coil wiring and design is completely different.

The only real difference is the S15 coil has the ignitor on the coil. The entire concept is the same and the wiring differs minimally

<------ I went from a S13 cover and S13 coils, to bypassing the ignitor and running S15 coils in a S15.3 valve cover.

Look into AEM pencil coils if you want a clean install or LS coils for the best bang for your buck (but asthetically not as pleasing since they use wire and plug and have a massive ignitor separate from the plug)

I'm really not interested in LS coils.

I believe you need to upgrade the coil pack harness for the splitfires as well. Thicker gauge wiring. My buddy had them on his s15, he upgraded through wiring specialties because he was having an issue with power supply

The go with splitfires or AEM pencil coils

Wiring is not an issue (and to the gentleman above: No, you do not need to "upgrade" wiring for splitfires. They are a direct drop in for stock wiring/harness)

Splitfire DIS-004 Direct Ignition Upgraded Coil Packs for SR20DET

Splitfire Super Direct Ignition System improves spark performance on your SR20DET motor. This is a newly developed ignition tuning system designed exclusively for the Nissan SR20DET engine. Splitfire enhances the efficiency of combustion to bring more power and torque. This kit comes with replacement Splitfire coil packs, ignition amplifier, and complete plug and play intermediary ignition harness. Works with both S13 and S14 SR20DET motor.

This is the same for the S15 as they are simply a drop in for them as well

I already have a wiring specialties coil pack harness anyways.

Do the AEM coils have the igniter built in to the coil also?

Some of them are smart coils, others require an ignitor. The ones on my car are "dumb" coils and I'm running a factory ignitor. Give AEM a call and see what they recommend. You can always get dumb coils and utilize an aftermarket ignition system for them. This would allow you to increase dwell time, resulting in a better spark. You'll melt the S15 coils trying to get more dwell time out of them.

That's a good idea. I think I will give AEM a call.
Going to eventually be switching the car over to a AEM Infinity anyways.
