Finally getting back into the mood of working on my hatch. I picked this 93 240sx up back in 2012 from a buddy that had recently acquired a shell with FD cage. I heard that this hatch originally came from the Portland/PDX area where the previous owner drag raced it at PIR. It had an SR20DET in it, but my buddy Kyle took it out for his track car. I ended up buying the rolling shell from him with 5 lug, Z wheels, and Nardi steering wheel. I bought a 96 KA24DE off a guy in Auburn WA, ended up swapping to an S13 intake and cleaning the motor up.

Over the fall, I did a wire tuck to my hatch in efforts to clean up the bay. I didn't anticipate a few things, long story short I'll be order a few spools of wire and re-wiring my headlights and turn signals. :picardfp:

I picked up polyurethane side skirts off my buddy Jordan Peterson back in February, threw them on to match the pignose lip.

The other day I noticed my bank account had a comma, not to common. I decided to pick up a downpipe, wideband, and FMIC.

Today I headed to my storage unit to pick at my longblock. I've been saving this longblock for a rebuild. I really need to polish this turd.

http://i.imgur.com/L3U7Yf8.jpg

Pulled this sump/pan off in a few minutes... really stoked to finally making moves on this KA-T after sitting on a turbo kit for like a year.

http://i.imgur.com/U2zLq2C.jpg

While I was at my storage unit, I dug through a few boxes and realized holy shit I have an OEM headgasket laying around! I think I might slap this onto my 96 KA and tighten her head down with ARP studs! :drama:

http://i.imgur.com/srcQxNb.jpg?1

When I got home, I figured out where I'd drill into the pan... I don't have access to any fab tools so I might ask a buddy for a favor. Drill and weld it!

Below is what my hatch looks like right now. When I bought it as a rolling shell, I was told it had moonlight pearl off the Z33. If that's true, I need to find someone to paint my pig nose bumper and side skirts!

http://i.imgur.com/LwdoDFr.jpg?1

Below, a concent I was toying around with in Photoshop... How often do you see a pignose hatch, 2-tone? Panda style? I'm thinking about do this and eventually getting a BN kit. Sweet rims can come later... Maybe 17x9.5 +15 front and 18x10.5 +? rear.

The other day I was asking around if anyone had access to a MIG welder, I needed to get my spot welds literally buttoned up where they unhinged. I was jacking up the front end of my car on the tow point and the sheet metal folded back...

http://i.imgur.com/RnGQZdQ.jpg

My buddy Nick came by in a pinch and offered to button it up. Took us about 45 minutes to get it patched up. Well, I help jack the car up and pull the wheel... I'm very thankful Nick helped me out and I owe him big time.

and here's my T25 with 550cc injectors waiting on a few parts.

http://i.imgur.com/sEMfG4F.jpg?1

Once I get my wideband in, and weld in vacuum nipple (for the wastegate actuator) I'll be taking in my oil pan, hotpipe, and downpipe to Galen Callahan and he'll patch in a few bungs.

http://i.imgur.com/U2TiWfg.jpg?2

I'm planning on getting the NismotronicSA and converting the KA to speed density... The 3bar MAP is $80 and IAT is $30 plus I'll need to figure out how to wire in the two... MAP sensor needs a capacitor for 5v and IAT needs a weld in bung... I might put that off until later and stick with the MAF.

Thanks man! Appreciate it... After I get my motor dialed in at 10psi I'll focus on cleaning up the look of it. Power goals is somewhere between 200-300hp, my only limitations right now is the T25 and pump gas.

Another thing that I forgot to mention, I do have a Villains Drift Angle Kit. Nate Schewchuck out of Walla Walla, WA extended my LCA's and modded the knuckles. I'd recommend the kit for anyone that needs a quick angle kit. In the near future I'd like to get roll center correction, maybe Heatmaker or just get a set of PBM cast knuckles?

So far so good kid.

Working on it.

This evening I had to head down to PepBoy's and O'Reilly's to find missing hardware. Specifically, I was looking for what I needed for the SR20DET o2 housing and turbo inlet elbow for this T25.

I needed:

5 x M8-1.25 x 30mm hex cap screws (for the T25 exhaust to o2 housing)
2 x M8-1.25 x 20mm hex cap screws (for MAF to turbo inlet elbow on compressor side)
8mm flat washers
8mm split lock washers

Update on the KA-T progress, I've ran into a few hick ups along the way. I've had to order a few parts here and there. I've only had time to work on this project in the evenings after work, minimal when I have to catch up on sleep in the afternoons too.

I pulled the subframe out, which wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I don't have much room in my garage for my engine hoist, so that's in a storage unit. I just took 3 jack stands, lifted the front end up, took the 3rd jackstand and propped the transmission up with it. Powersteering lines out of the way, steering column shaft unbolted, 4 subframe bolts and both tie rods unbolted, boom it was out and my KA was levitating.

http://i.imgur.com/Nz3H8X3.jpg

Ripped the old oil pan out for the spare I had with an oil return bung.

http://i.imgur.com/q0GRdQy.jpg

I had to wait a week to get a 1/8" BSPT Male, DUAL 1/8"NPT Female fitting for the oil feed and oil pressure sensor. This same fitting that FRSport sells but shipping is like $15, free off of ebay...

http://i.imgur.com/IT7D7mF.jpg

I also ran into an issue with the old SR o2 elbow I had sourced from a friend... It turns out that the mating surfaces were warpped, I was about to go get it resurfaced at a machine shop when I said fuck it I might as well pay and buy a new one. Machine shop quoted me $40 to resurface... well, little bit more money and I got the ISR Performance 3 inch o2 elbow. :picardfp:

http://i.imgur.com/OGbRdy3.jpg

Test fitting everything, I realized I needed to adjust the clocking of the compressor housing. Everyone also suggested to get nut locking plates and ovaled nuts so that I don't run into boost leak issues. I picked up pocking plates and oval nuts off of Roland Gallagher.

http://i.imgur.com/lSguh8L.jpg

I also did some chicken shit welds to the studs, sorry I'm not a professional welder.

http://i.imgur.com/2fT30R2.jpg

I decided to ditch the solid motor mounts I had in favor for OEM ones. I just want streetability, I hate how everything on my chassis rattled loose from solids. It's great for the track but ffs I want to cruise on the streets.

http://i.imgur.com/AyIlTXr.jpg

Installed the Mishimoto powersteering cooler that I bought a while back Zilvia front page lo. No cool logo since I bought the cheap black one.

http://i.imgur.com/r1SIOel.jpg

Fitting everything up and getting the coolant lines tightened down.

http://i.imgur.com/pMxyxdm.jpg

Now I got everything buttoned up, I'm waiting on a new FMIC kit. The FMIC and pipes I bought off of Matt Nelson were jank. After struggling to get everything working I decided fuck it I'll just get a new FMIC kit.

http://i.imgur.com/0CoO3rW.jpg

The FMIC kit sets me back further than planned, I'll have to pick up my Nismotronic Standalone later in the summer. Once I have the motor running I'm just going to brake in the turbo and stay out of boost. It's not my daily so it will sit in the garage most the summer.

It's a pain in the ass to tuck the slack and you have to extend all the headlight and turn signal wires. My first time doing it, I'd do it again and take more time.

Last week I finally got this thing running and on the ground, wideband is working fine and she's boosting 10psi. I still have the stock injectors in, so I can't hammer it. I picked up the CX Racing FMIC kit and tossed it on.

Today I shipped off my ECU to Nismotronic. They will be installing a daughter board onto my KA MT S13 ECU.

http://i.imgur.com/FBghqRi.jpg

The gf picked up a cheap ass tow rig, 99 Nissan Pathfinder. She went and grabbed plastidip and threw Totoro on it. haha.

http://i.imgur.com/YTmozSb.jpg

I went ahead and threw on a NissanPacific, Villains, and AlwaysReckless decal to start off the sticker bombing.

http://i.imgur.com/oYSC0sb.jpg

After driving the KA-T around for about 100 miles, she rests in the garage until the new standalone comes back from Nismotronic. I'm excited to get this dialed in with the STi injectors.

I spent Sunday at Evergreen Drift taking photos of the Grassroots championship. I think it was the most difficult to shoot because of pseudo tandems and the skill level gap. A few of the top points standings guys got knocked out early because of braking shit.

Did you do any emissions removal on the intake manifold other than the egr pipe? I've heard when you boost KA's you have to remove all sorts of junk from the intake side. Definitely takes away from the "bolt on and go" aspect.

Only EGR, upper intake runners and the solenoids behind the head that are associated with the secondary butterfly valves in the upper runners. S14 upper runners don't have those butterfly's, which I'm using. I still have the stock Idle Air Control Valve, I kept that and the harness plug for it.

Yes, s13 lower, s14 upper. I didn't want to deal with OBD-II and s14 wiring into s13 harnesses.

Today I discovered one of the small coolant lines from the throttle body had a pinhole leak. I dropped the alternator, starter, and oil filter to make clearance to drop the lower intake plenum on the KA24DE. I went and deleted the excessive vacuum and coolant lines. I used JB welded and vacuum nipples to cap off the lines I didn't need.

I haven't posted an update in a while, but my buddy Aaron and I looked at a few cars over Christmas weekend. He ended up getting a 240 hatch. Here's a vlog about the weekend (it's a bit long sorry)... I've put about 180 miles onto the rebuilt KA-T in the past couple of months!

why in the hell would you run a 10.5 up front on a drift car? gonna rub fucking everything. you’d be totally fine running a 9.5 in the rear too. not like you’re making more power than a sticky 225 could handle. don’t cut up perfect quarters just cuz you bought the wrong sized wheels. you could probably sell those and buy some that actually fit and make a profit.

Prediction: you're not gonna run the 10.5j up front. The steering will feel so heavy and shitty.

Plus you're gonna need some ugly rocket bunny fenders to fit them with those spacers.

Needed the valve cover breather for a catch can. I lost mine. Zach Farrar had a spare laying around.

I'd be buying more car parts for the hatch, but I'm currently saving money to get into a new house (renting). That's putting me behind, but in the long run it should work out. I'm limited on space for storage, even with a storage unit... It would be better to get rid of my storage unit and have a bigger garage.

This morning I had to swing by Harbor Freight to buy a 2 ton low pro jack to replace my dead floor jack. It made it a lot easier to lift my chassis.

I went through and adjusted the coilovers to an ideal height. My driveway is BAD for low car. I was tempted to go more, but my front lip is already scraping like crazy.

I have my front coilovers 8 clicks from soft, and rears 3 clicks from soft. I decided to go with what PBM offers, 10k / 8k springs. While I was setting these up, I realized that this is probably the heights I can set the rears... So drop knuckles will be in the near future [emoji102]

I ended up going with Nathan Shiel out of Marysville since I live close. Martin had some scheduling issues that cause him to delay his Seattle Dyno session. I spoke with Martin, he is familiar with NismotronicSA. I'd recommend him based on my friends that have gone through him.

Hey, a car I actually recognize, enjoyed checking out your build thread bud!
Hey! 🏁 Lots more to come this winter 😎

Just got a pair of 18x9.5j +20 CR Kiwamis in the mail. Fenders are ordered. I'll get 225/35/18 for these and get 235/40/18 for the 18x10.5j rears.

40mm LCAs and 1/2 inch spacer clears the street and brings the lip out a little over 2 inches.

Few random photos from Patrick Healds shop. I bought all the A/C lines, compressor, brackets, evap, exchanger, and drier off Jim Heald. They were prepping a NASCAR 240. They threw in a bonus HVAC system and climate control (all the stuff under the dash).

Noah's coupe, he just threw on those AG wheels.

Decided to wrap the center bezel wince it was so scratched up. Not bad for my first wrap.

Side note: I need to pick up the plastic retainers for my S13's door sills. I bought the OEM S13 door sills that you normally have in the door jams since my shell never got those. The Nissan Parts number is 01553-06161 - they're not cheap. :/

Yesterday I pulled my old driveline to replace it with another used one. After I pulled my old driveline I found out what was vibrating. The U-Joint was rattling, which probably caused the vibration and knocking noise when I came to a slow stop.

I can't believe how big of a difference a balanced driveline would make, but my car feels like a stock daily on the freeway now. Plus I can see through the rear view mirror.

Friday I was tempted to throw my CR Ultimates on the car when I cross threaded 2 lug studs.*

I was pissed as hell and told myself fuck it, let's roll these fenders tonight and hope I can get them on for DriftCon. Long story short I didn't anticipate how long it was going to take to roll all 4 fenders, lower, and adjust for clearance.

I don't have an oil catch can, and this being my first event in a freshly built 1200 mile, freshly tuned KA-T - I didn't want to risk spraying the bay with oil. Pardon my Hoonigan Bonus inspired catch can.

Tony from LCM Garage mounted my tires Friday evening.

Saturday morning, I woke up at 7am and b-lined it to O'Reillys for the lug studs. I purchased extras just in case. It took me an hour and a half to replace those 2 studs and at 9am I decided pack it up and head to the track.

I'll have to save the DriftCon Afterdark content for another thread, I have a few thousand photos to go through.

Meanwhile Sunday morning rolls around. I'm sore af and running off of 5 hours of sleep. I am determined to fit my wheels on my Schassis.

I was really sad to not have my type 3 fenders and I decided to go for it and roll my fronts. That proved to be pretty difficult. I also didn't like the monster truck stance, so I decided to drop the rear a full inch.*

Images below are before I roll the front fenders and lower the rear.*NOTE: 39.5mm between the preload collars and the ride height collar.

Rolling the front fenders was a long and painful process. This was the first time I have ever rolled fenders. My driver side was burnt from the rubbing (test run). My passenger side fender turned out great.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181002/b5a6b9ed6c358199a7052e0bf9916aef.jpg

My doggo Dia wanted to help me with the fender roller. As soon as I pull the camera out to take a photo of her, she acts like I'm about to spank her... haha

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181002/fb91f47393544a71f960644a0a522dda.jpg

As you can see, from my test run the tire rubbed and burnt the edge of the lip. It's unfortunate I couldn't get the driver side fender to look nicer. But atleast it won't rub anymore. The photo above doesn't do it justice.

The photo above is before I lowered the car an inch. Standing back from the car it was pretty gross looking. If you look closely the waves in the rear quarter were actually from a previous incident.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181002/86f6d153595abd30dd85f26b9100e1af.jpg

By the end of the night I had the front fenders pulled and I lowered the rear an inch. I only rub on the passenger side, I may need to hammer deep in the fender well on the hump that forms in the center of the tub.

Don't mind the reverse rake... The car cannot physically go any lower in the front. I have Type 3 over fenders on order. I'm hoping to receive those later this month.

I am still having rubbing on the driver side rear fender when I hit big bumps. I'll have to hammer out the bump that forms in the inside wheel well. The front wheels rub the tubs at full lock. I will need to do some full lock "testing" and then take my hammer to those spots.

How big/many spacers are you running in the front? Those wheels should clear with about 8mm and some camber... and not poke that much.

3 degrees of camber.

One more thing you can usually roll front fenders with a hammer and some patience, they're too flimsy to do it well with a roller.

I recall someone recommended me pulling the fenders off and doing this off the car. I considered it.. I probably would have gotten better results. My driver side fender was more flimsy than the passenger side.

Idk if you're supposed to use blue thread locker on lug nut end caps, but today I bought some. Why you ask? As media, I find lug nut end caps all over the middle of speedway. These go on hand tight, and I'm not about to use a crescent wrench on them to tighten them down.

Aside from the end caps, I spoke with Tommy from PBM and he recommended I start using anti seize grease on my lugs since I stripped 2 of them.

With Winter Drift around the corner, I need to order 2 tires for my drift spares. There's an Evergreen Drift winter drift event on the 20th I might hit up. I really need to work on clearance and front ride height lock to lock. My front passenger fender tacoed to my wheel (not bad but enough to notice). So I'm going to need to figure out how to prevent that.

I ordered the GKTech v4 Rear Toe Rods and will install those ASAP and get on the alignment rack.

I've still haven't heard back regarding my front type 3 fenders. [emoji120] Hopefully they will magical appear this month.

It looks like my Auto-CollectStorm bumper guides are in the mail. I also ordered the lower fender braces. Unfortunately I won't be ordering my body kit until after I get my suspension and clearances sorted. I want to get seat time this winter season!

Below is the difference between the original inner tie rods that came with the older version Villains Angle Kit. It's a Maxima inner tie rod (from what I recall). The Villains now sell the kit and the tie rods optional with built in rack spacers. That extra machining allows the tie rod to go into the rack further but without losing theads.

I freaking love the PNW on days like this. I finally got her dialed on clearance and have it setup for the rest of winter season. I'll be picking up fenders tomorrow.

Man it's a good feeling to drive to the track, put in a full day of driving, look at the rears and say "meh" and drive back home. I'm probably the minority but I don't mind having low HP. I could go for a little more to keep these 235/40/18's spinning.

‪Next time it's dry, I'm going to air up the rears to 60psi and go full speed into the 3/8ths to see if I can simulate what my NA KA on 17's could do. I had a little to much grip when it dried out today. [emoji848]‬

This was a long week, I spent my free time after work working on getting the over fenders fitted. I got my Type 3 front fenders yesterday and threw them on. I am filthy from all the dust. I just took her around the neighborhood and raged on her to hear for rubbing. Passenger side has a bit of rubbing, I may have to bring it up slightly until I can get heavier spring rates.

The front could probably go lower with stiffer springs. We shall see. The Fineline 180sx Type 3 fenders fit a little better than Origin Type 2. But the Fineline fenders are pretty rough compared to the Origins. I'll have to clean them up when I have time.

The rear Origin over fenders fit perfectly. I brought my wheels out slightly but left enough gap to allow them to tuck under load. Again I may raise it slightly. I just love how it looks dumped.

Big shout-out to my gf for putting up with my shit this week. This was the first time I've done this to an schassis. This is my 8th S13. So I'm stoked to finally embark on ruining a shell. Ive always loved big wheels slammed schassis.

This update is way over due... Uploading the photos right now and will type everything out on the computer. Watch for the edit.

Edit:

On November 24th I headed out to Evergreen Speedway for the Winter Drift event. The day started out fairly well. While I was driving, I attempting to film video of other drivers but hit a snag when my motor started to die.

While I was drifting the cageless tandem course, my motor suddenly lost all power and fell on its face. I clutched in and it died. It took a few tries to start her back up, but I managed to limp her off the track by blipping the throttle and riding the clutch to prevent it from stalling. I couldn't get my car back into my pit area so I had to work on it in the 5/8ths pocket (bottom of the bank).

My motor wouldn't idle and needed constant throttle to keep it running. My AFR's were roughly 8-9. I could tell there was gas sputtering on the floor behind my muffler. I pulled the spark plugs and found they were covered in soot.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181205/ee5404be7fc27298527419e9a1ec22fb.jpg

We decided to clean the spark plugs up to see if it would idle. It was still struggling, so I went and bought new plugs. After putting the new plugs in, the motor would idle without me babying the throttle... I was still reading at 9-10 AFR's at idle.

Alex Lindsay was helping me out diagnose the issue, while we were looking at the motor he randomly asked how old my MAF was and if we should try a different sensor. He reached down for the air filter and felt a gaping hole in the top. We found that the top cap of the cone filter popped off and was blocking the MAF sensor completely! After pulling that out of the MAF sensor, the motor was running a lot better. But luck wasn't on our side just yet... The AFR's were still running super rich, but I was able to drift it on the track. While I was going full throttle, as soon as the boost went above 10psi it would go super rich and misfire. My tuner Nathan Shiel mentioned to me that the hole in the intake could be allowing to much air to hit the MAF sensor, causing it to run really rich. He recommended to block it or swap out the filter. I went with the ghetto cardboard, electrical tape, and zipties option...

Needless to say, that didn't solve the issue. The motor was still running rich and bogging down in boost. My half day at the track came to an end, but I was able to drive her back home to further diagnose the issue.

Since it's been a while, I went ahead and changed the disturber cap, rotor, and spark plug wires in hopes that it would help. I event bought a new MAF, which didn't resolve the issue completely. The car was running good, but not top notch. :rant2:

While I was working on trying to figure out what was going wrong, Alex Lindsay and a few other drivers were asking about the fuel pressure regulator, if I had the OEM FPR, and if I could test the fuel pressure.

Nikki loaned me her fuel pressure regulator and I ran the test. I have the S14 OEM FPR and Walbro 255 pump.

I was at 59 psi with the motor off but fuel pump on, 40 psi with motor idling, and around 37 psi when I revved and held the motor at about 3,000 rpm.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181205/84909f4fbd35a8055b7f4ee2353d8188.jpg

While I was cruising to 7-Eleven to buy a few drinks, I recently posted on FB asking around to see if anyone had a spare air filter I could borrow. Ironically, I drove past my buddy Guy and he DM'd me asking how the motor was running.

I told him, "like shit when I hit boost" so I told him I wanted to throw out the CX Racing intake (or cut it down so I could run a normal filter pod). He had one in his garage! He brought over a stock SR intake pipe and a filter that didn't have the stupid cone/disk in the top.

The motor was running decent that night, but I later found out it was still misfiring. Regardless, I drove down to Kent WA for NW Toy Run.

Casey and I hopped into the hatch and met up with Guy the next morning. We drove all the way down to Kent and back without much issues. Keep in mind, I wasn't hauling ass on the freeway... :2f2f:

Later that night I went for a few late night highway pulls... the issue was still there. :-/

Final conclusion of the mysterious misfiring in boost...

Well, let me start out by saying this... The air filter breaking and blocking the MAF obviously caused the spark plugs to get a shit ton of soot on them. After replacing the plugs with new spark plugs, the motor still was acting up. I went ahead and did a full tune up on the car as a preventative. Replacing the air filter and intake tube was another item I wanted to do for a while.

A few days ago I went and re-gapped the old spark plugs to 0.028 and sanded down the contact points to remove the black soot. The new spark plugs were at 0.042. Since I'm running 14 psi, my tuner mentioned it could have been spark blowout! The motor the past two days has been behaving well. While I was going over the entire motor, I also noticed my ground wire off my battery was lose to the chassis. I went and found a better location, cleaned up the contact points, and tightened her down.

Hard lessen learned? I should have started with the stupid simple solutions first and move on to more complex. I guess I was too frustrated to think about the smaller details. Needless to say, my motor was far overdue for a tune up!

I'm also determined to switch over to speed density so I don't have to deal with MAF issues again.

yeeaaah it does fit like shit. I'll be messing around with it in my free time to see if I can get it to fit better. My pignose fit the fenders fine but the KBD needs a lot of work. Storm bfg was clean install, holds the front bumper kind of. I have to trim some areas on the bumper.

I'll have to talk to my buddy that I want to paint it and get his recommendations.

Really happy with my current setup. KA-T seems to be reliable, however its running a bit rich. It starts to run very rich when I go out hot lapping. I've seen it about 9-10 AFR after doing 3-4 hot laps in a row. Not sure why, my temps look good. I need to talk to my tuner about these symptoms.

I'd like to get an oil cooler to improve cooling.

3 open drifts this year, I haven't had to change the rear tires once. The mixture of wet and dry conditions coupled with low HP is getting me by. [emoji1690]

Woke up to this

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190310/67a5c0b702df694b427b679ba34515dd.jpg

As soon as the Parts Shop MAX solid bushings came in, I put them in the freezer and brought them down to -20 Celsius.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190310/b6381909d066c1632841e45847d9df63.jpg

Being that this was my first time doing this, I wasn't sure how much to cut or how quickly it would cut. The sawzall made this whole process fast. I started by drilling the rubber out and then hammering out the metal centerpieces. Once that was done, I cut 2 lines so that I could punch out a section and have the metal insert taco.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190310/35954ae1d572c8457bb621e24127b150.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190310/22952053d949dfe1f6c36a8716af4547.jpg

I ended up using 2 1/2 inch wire wheel to hone/clear the cylinders. I then used a metal file to get rid of metal burr and file in a 45 degree taper.

The bushings were tight to start. Very difficult, my fingers hurt from how cold they were. I wrapped a towel around the bushings to prevent my fingers from freezing and smacked it with a rubber dead blow.

Aligning the subframe to go back into the car with a floor jack is a pain in the ass. It took me a good 2 hours to get it to work. At one point I got the subframe jammed and stuck. I was so pissed.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190310/3dd71624ce87354b6cb1c79fadf564e8.jpg

I'm glad I got it all back together. Tomorrow I'll blew the brakes, double check all the bolts/nuts, check ebrake, and the hopefully cruise around town.

So far I've noticed my diff is less noisy. I personally think it's because the rattling was a combination of diff vibrating with the subframe vibrating against the frame (my subframe bushings were REALLY blown out). I do hear more noise turning at low speeds. I haven't taken it on the highway yet, I'm sure that's going to be dandy....

My car made it through the Evergreen Drift Winter Drift season!

Only had a few big issues. One was my starter dieing at the track, replaced it immediately thanks to an Oreillys down the block. The other was my air filter breaking and fucking up my OEM MAF. I added an oil restrictor, got a quick release, and slapped on a KBD kit that has poop front bumper fitment.

The last 3 open drifts, I've been tandems with groups of drivers that are really good. They are faster then me in the corners, so I need to experiment with lower tire pressure and get a better alignment. I will not raise my car any higher then it is unless I get drop knuckles.

I just ordered 350z stubs from Villains since eithery S13 CV joints are making a lot of noise or my diff is about to break. I bought Z33 axles for $130, better to have them on standby for when the S13 ones go. I really appreciate my buddy Nate Snyder for giving me a spare S13 diff he had laying around.

I'm going to try out vinyl wrapping my car this spring. Going to force myself to do it twice before I think about giving up. I do plan on eventually going full fiberglass and getting the car painted in a year or so.

Got all the fittings and couplers in the mail today. I went and got new hardware for the intake snout and the turbo outlet. I ended up getting m8x1.25 20mm for the snout and m6x1.0 20mm for the turbo outlet. As you can see I got the GKTech parts. I had to order a -4an to 7/16ths banjo bolt kit from Kinugawa Turbos in California. Along with that, I bought a turbo manifold stud kit, ovaled nuts, gasket kit, and nut lock washers (GKTech). I reused the ISR O2 elbow and bought a new ISR turbo manifold. I reused the coolant fittings off my T25 as well.

I dropped off my cold pipe to Luis Salazar to quickly TIG in an IAT bung. I will be converting my KA-T to MAP as soon as I bring it to my tuner. I'm also waiting on a boost controller from Nismotronic.

I fucked up this weekend. But I had a blast driving with the homies during team tandem competition! I need to straighten her out a bit and bring her back to my tuner for the MAP wiring and tune. He ran out of time and tuned it with the MAF to get me on track.

Last couple of days I've been working on installing my Villains Z33 stubs and z33 axles. I've waited since March due to not having much time with work and OT.

After DriftCon, prepping the front end to get straightened got me wrenching.

Now that I have a new welded diff and Z33 axles in, I am ready to drop it off at my tuners shop again. He said he'll wire in my MAP, IAT sensor, install boost controller and tune it.

The Villains guys 3D print that for shipping. It makes it so the stubs aren't banging into each other during shipping.:wcc:

Just making a random post about my thoughts on what I need to do next...

I'm in the middle of vinyl wrapping the car. All the little things are starting to come together. After my motor is converted to speed density and dynoed I should be in a good spot for reliability and power on demand...

A few idea's on what to do next:

1.) I really need to get an oil cooler. I am not sure what brand to go with, I may just opt for Mishimoto. I want a thermostat controlled oil plate with a big oil cooler. Tracks like Evergreen, PARC, Villains Sportsland and Spirit Peaks allow hot lapping. At Evergreen, I can tell my motor doesn't like hot lapping more then 4 laps. Oil cooler should help it's temperament.

2.) I've put it off as long as possible, but a roll cage one of the next big purchases I need. Unfortunately, I don't feel like my interior is not where I want it. If I get a roll cage, I really want to dump the grey carpet for a new black carpet. I want to restore the interior as much as I can with a roll cage.

3.) I need to re-fiberglass my type3 front fender that blew up. I've also considered buying a new set of Type 3's and have the old fenders as back ups.

4.) I obviously need a bash bar

5.) Next spring I am considering buying all fiberglass body kit and getting real paint.

6.) While I was under my car installing the Z33 axles, I realized why my exhaust is so quiet. My mid pipe has a high flow resonator in it! I was thinking about swapping to straight pipe.

The next steps will only come if I can sustain a reliable motor. My exterior really needs to be cleaned up.

I'm so stoked I didn't have to deal with a receptionist, dropping the car off middle of the work week, waiting a week to get her back. I don't have paint that matches but next time the motors out I'll have Jordan respray it. [emoji7] Man, I can't describe how happy this car makes me. She's always a work in progress but I love driving her. Now I need to get her switch to MAP and a full high low boost tune. [emoji469]

So I completely forgotten to get an alignment after the solid subframe bushings. I noticed at DriftCon my toe was off in the rear.

Last October when I got my last alignment I was at -0.8 rear camber on both sides. Since then I went wide body, and solid subframe bushings. The PBM subframe bushings move the subframe up about an inch. I lowered my car about 2 or 3 inches too. The raised it about and inch. The rear camber was sitting at -3.6 and -3.5. My rear struts were set to soft, 3 clicks towards hard. My car squats maybe 2 or 3 inches at that setting. (Tucking rim forsure)

Can't wait to drive it again... I've been addicted to Assetto Corsa this summer.

I bought an oil cooler with thermostat adapter plate last week. Finally had time to make brackets. I need to buy a relay, switch and wire up the fan. Most feedback I got from friends recommend it to be off to the side and protected from getting hit in tandems.

I ended up playing it behind the FMIC because the brackets were super easy to make. I hope the fan will allow it to cool down rapidly when I'm hot lapping.

I have a Street Faction baasic bash bar coming and a new steering wheel.

Also I had to shorten my oil lines, taking apart the AN fittings sketched me out. One is partially stripped. I may order the fittings and lines and remaking them myself. The kit wasn't meant to be mounted vertically like this.

T2 gasket #2 blow this summer. In the photo in the side by side comparison you can see the gasket from June.

I'm going to try the hks gasket from vivid racing. Apparently it's thicker then the ones I've used?

I'm going to belt sander the surfaces and cake copper gasket spray on it. I'm going to order inconel studs and nord lock washers. Tack the studs in place and send it...

Forrest Vertz said to go with clear silicone, but I'm hesitant because I do street this car... I'll give it a try once gasket #3 blows out...

I also had my coolant lines lay against the downpipe and pop. I bought 5/16ths fittings and will run a different route.

Went and bought a thread checker, tired of guessing bolt thread sizes. I'm surprised Enjuku Racing or ISR doesn't include this in their product information.

ISR Performance 3 Inch O2 Elbow (SR20) Studs: M10 - 1.5 40mm length. Nuts M10 - 1.5 (17mm hex)

ISIS Performance Turbo Manifold v2 (KA24DE) T2 bottom mount Studs: M8 - 1.25 45mm length. Nuts M8 - 1.25 (12mm hex)

I hope others find this useful for future reference.

Studs for turbo manifold. Idk why they're different sizes. The longer one is annoying with clearances.

I got a ton of feedback from people on Facebook and IG on what to do to solve this T2 gasket issue. I honestly feel like I've tried everything they've suggested.

One unique suggestion came from Forrest Vert; 100% Silicone Clear caulking from Home Depot. He says it's an old Hot Roder trick he picked up on. Also claims he's been running the same silicone gaskets off the head and t2 flange on his blue SR schassis for years. A few other people suggested it and swear by if.

Alongside all this, my buddy Julio Losh is on his 7th blown t2 gasket. He went and bought the s15 OEM t2 gasket, surfaced the flanges, and copper sprayed everything. I tried that back in June and I only got 2 months out of it.

I decided to take it an extra step and buy inconel studs and stage 8 locking fasteners. I found the kit on Flyin Miatas website! Inconel studs are rated from crygenic temps up to 2200°F (982°C). They should not warp or stretch under high temperatures. With the stage 8 fasteners, the locking washer (held in with an e-clip) will prevent the nut from backing out. I should also be able to reuse the studs and fasteners. The fasteners are fairly cheap but the inconel studs are money.

Since Julio is trying the thicker OEM S15 gasket, I told him the only thing I got to lose is not trying something new. I decided to give the silicone a try.

Below are two photos Forrest Vert sent me of his SR with silicone gaskets.

Ive tried all diffrent types of gaskets..the only one that has ever held up for me is a full copper gasket. Its 3/16 thick straight copper. Installed with lock washers on the bolts and never looked back.

Good luck solving the issuse..shit is annoying

I thought about it, but I had a 4 layer t2 gasket sitting on my bench. We shall see... I'm really hoping the inconel studs hold up. I torqued those studs into the manifold really well.

I didn't really take any photos, but small update I did wire in a relay and switch for my oil cooler on Labor day. I'm planning on running Villains Sportsland in a few weeks. :coolugh:

Last Friday I received my Villains hydro kit. I bought the full $500 kit because I didn't want to waste time piecing together my own, plus I love supporting the Villains guys, Nate is one of the nicest people I've ever met.

On top of that, Villainssportsland is this weekend. I decided to slap a $30 underglow kit on the schassis. I need to add more ricer RGB to the car since I'm a PC gamer / twitch streamer!

I'll try and record random shenanigans from VSL VI and post it to Zilvia.

I never gave a proper update from Villains Sportsland back in September, most likely for how bummed I was. First of all, the event was INSANE! 3 days of drifting and camping with your buds at one of the coolest tracks in the PNW... This just makes me realize I could post a ton of content from that weekend! I'll update the thread over time.

Long story short, the KA overheated and blew a head gasket. The head was 11 thousandths off and the block was only 2 thousandths off. Couple weeks ago I pulled the motor out and had Ray at Garage Auto Hero pull the head off. Ray machined the head and he slapped a Tomei head gasket on her!

I have most of my photos on my phone, so I'll add photos through the Tapatalk app.

I’m very thankful my buddy Nick Mosher reaches out to me and offered to tow my car to Villains Sportsland in Walla Walla WA. That’s about a 4-5 hour drive depending on traffic, a little more with our lunch break at a trucker hub.

Jordan Hilmo, Jon W, John Danyals, Roland Gallagher, and Derrik Pompeo all met at the Safeway gas station to fuel up and hit the road.

While I was at Villains, I lifted the head? I think a cooling issue that started back in July finally caught up to me in September. Although it didn’t seem apparent mid summer. There was an open drift where my turbo coolant lines sprung a pin hole leak. I think ever since then my motor had strange cooling issues. I believe it had a minor head gasket leak that got progressively worse until 3 days of hot lapping at Villains Sportsland.

At VSL6, my coolant needed to be bled 2-3 times due to air getting stuck in the upper coolant hose. What I didn’t realize was that exhaust fumes was slowly building in the coolant lines. On the 3rd day at Villains Sportsland, the motor ECT peaked at around 240 F. After that I called it for the weekend.

When I got home from Walla Walla, I rented a compression tester to see if I lost a cylinder. I was getting around 150-175 per cylinder BUT cylinder 1 was around 120. I ran the compression test a 3rd time when I realized the compression in cylinder 1 was falling a lot faster then the other cylinders.

Turns out, the compression in cylinders 1 and 2 were being pushed into the coolant jackets (yes while I was testing). This was evident when I heard bubbles in the overflow tank.

I messaged Ray at Garage Autohero and asked if he could look at it. For his sake, I pulled the motor and brought him the long block and a Tomei head gasket.

Ray made a quick turn around and got the head back from the machine shop over the weekend. With the freshly installed head gasket, he noticed something odd about the upper timing chain. Apparently Mark (that assembled the long block) had the lower chain off 1 tooth. Ray fixed the issue by moving the upper chain 1 tooth to match the lower chain. I dressed the motor and dropped her back in that week!

Just FYI you don't need to torque the inconel T2 studs into the manifold. Just fully threaded in and hand tight is fine. They work with Clamping force via the nuts.
Also good on you for getting Inconel studs and Stage8 nuts. This is the best hardware that you can use. However you really should have went with the "s15" multilayer t2 gasket. Good time to do that.
My only gripe with the Stage8 nuts is they can easily get deformed in the area where the clip for the lock engages the nut. Oh well.

At first I was having issues starting the motor and it turns out the MAF died. When I hooked up my standalone, the reading was sitting at 255. NO IDEA how tf the MAF died! All I did was set it on a shelf when it was removed from the car. POS reman car parts!

The MAF sitting at 100% flooded the motor and caused it to not start. I updated Ray what happened and couldn’t believe it. I pulled the spark plugs to air out the motor overnight. The next morning I had an old MAF to A B test with and it started up!

While I was at it, I spoke with my tuner about getting it tuned again. Since the timing was corrected, the tune would be way off. He recommended (again) to wire in the MAP and IAT sensors I have. I got off my lazy ass and spent last Friday evening wiring in both of those sensors.

After I had the harness back in and tucked, the motor started but ran on 3 cylinders. I thought an injector died or I fried the wiring while I had the harness out. Turns out spark plug in cylinder 4 decided to completely die?

Long story short, check the basics before ripping the engine harness out a second time... ugh.

Street tune coming later this week!!!

This week, I’m bringing my car down to a guy named Kenny to dyno tune my car. I switched to speed density! Now I can run more boost and toss the old s13 MAF.

Last week I noticed my house reeked of gasoline. After checking around the garage, I figured out my gas tank started leaking.

Luckily my friend Spencer (Frowsh) offered to let me use his dads outdoor lift. We got it up in the air and slapped some JB TankWeld on the leak.

Simeon stopped by in his BMW to hang and play pool. Spencer’s never seen his new BMW in person.

Looking forward to this 2020 season! Paint in March!

This weekend went well. I can’t believe how fast the car is now. I was actually nervous af entering the 3/8ths bank because how fast it got up to speed. I need to work on my flick entries.

While I was tandeming towards the end of the day, I broke a RUCA! Thankfully my friend Brad Davis has a replacement in his trailer. He loaned it to me so I could gimp back home. The next day he gave me a few arms to try out.

Just read though your entire thread, I got a KBD rear bumper and skirts for my s14. You mentioned their fitment was bad? How so? I'm a little nervous because it gets misshapen so easily.

Anyway, great thread!

Hey Joel,

I think it's because I have Origin Type 3 fenders... I feel that the OEM metal fenders fit the KBD front bumpers better. I had a friend with a similar issue with Type 3 fenders and another one that had no idea what we were talking about... Turns out the guy that had no issues had OEM metal front fenders. Tyler (my other buddy with type 3 fenders) and I both assumed because the Type 3 fenders bow the front bumper out slightly, that was causing our gap issues.

One way others have recommended is using the OEM brackets to attach your front bumper and front fenders together off the car... then have a buddy or two help place the front bumper and fenders on as one whole unit. Sounds like a headache but 2 guys on IG recommended me to do that.

I'm curious if that's a uniquely s13 issue. The bumper mounting for my type 3 fenders on my s14 are in the factory spot so maybe it won't be something I need to be concerned with.

I guess this is a very abstract concern as they have yet to make the KBD kouki bumper

No idea. Type 3 fenders are wider then OEM so the polyurethane molded for a certain width will bow out different.

Just an update, I made it through 3 drift events since I dynoed 345whp/314tq and I blew out 2nd gear. I was hot lapping and initiating in third (no clutch kicks, just faint entry) and I down shifted into 2nd and got on it. 2nd gear left the chat. I bought a Z32 transmission and I’ll be swapping that in as soon as I can.

Added some photos from when I street drove the car 3 hours to spirit peaks. I’m lucky it didn’t go out while I was down south.

I bought the Xcessive Manufacturing shortened bracket to reposition the Z32 shifter to work with the stock 240sx tunnel hole and everyone on Facebook told me to throw the Xcessive linkage out the window. Apparently their notorious for binding up or falling apart? Dpomps offered to cut and weld the stock linkage. Basically if you remove the 3-4 inch bar between the U joints, the length is almost identical to the linkage. Other people on Facebook suggested using the LOJ Conversion linkage, which is a higher quality machined link.

Derrik has dealt with the same issues others reported and advices to just go this route.

I won't get Mazworx adapter kit until probably the last week of March, so this is cutting it close for the April events. I'll probably have to slap this in the day before PARC.

Well since I blew up my transmission, I bought another KA transmission to get me to paint. I brought my car to Frowsh's dad's to work on it on the lift.

Turns out my life that weight flywheel teeth was destroyed from the old starter I just replaced.

I replaced it with an OEM flywheel I had laying around. Yes I cleaned it, no I didn't have time to resurface it. When I throw the z32 transmission in, I will get another flywheel resurfaced.

Summer Jam at PARC was completely out of control! I should do a write up on the shenanigans that went down. I did throw together a video edit that blew up on Facebook! I will post the YouTube video below.

Yes my car caught on fire on day 1. Yes I kept drifting!!!

I forgot to take pictures, but I bought ISR braided brake lines for the S13. Threw them on on Friday before the evergreen open drift.

Yeah it wasn?t to bad. Brake line leaked and ignited from the hot sparking rear caliper. That caught the plastic shield on fire. No fuel leak. We good. I?m still driving around Seattle like this lmao https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200702/05945cf9bb345bbc6acb9252e73e112e.jpg

Soooo if no one saw my IG and Snaps from last weekend, my muffler literally exploded at the open drift!!!! I drove home with it scraping on the ground!

Thankfully my friend David is a really good fabricator. He had a stainless piecut turn down exhaust (dolphin tip, lobster top exhaust) sitting in his garage.

He?s now officially my go to fabricator, he literally lives down the street from me! [emoji23]

Saturday was a long day. After waking up at 5:30am, I had a long day at Evergreen. Knocked the KA during practice. I?m pretty sure it was oil starvation. Once I got home (thanks Jordan and Ali) I started tearing the KA out of the car around 9:30pm. Around midnight, I chugged a Nitro Brew and passed out under my car while undoing the transmission bolts. [emoji23] I woke up in my bed and turned a few wrenches. It?s ready to get inspected and hopefully all it needs is new bearings. [emoji373][emoji3064][emoji487]

I forgot to post an update.

Motor was torn down. We found that the upper timing chain started breaking apart. Fragments of the upper chain was found in the sump. The debris got everywhere! Cylinder 3 spun a bearing and this crank got rekted.

Jim Heald torn apart the motor and started cleaning all the parts. Checked the head and block, sent everything in to get tanked.

We have a spare eagle rod, replacing the crank, oil pump/front cover, new Tomei head gasket, and I bought a new OEM Nissan timing chain kit.

That evergreen timing chain kit was most likely the culprit for this motors failure.

We didn?t get the KA together fast enough for Villains Sportsland, but Nate ended up loaning me his practice car to run Sportsland. I was really excited to drive, this car is setup well for the 3rd gear entry flicks! I had a blast last weekend! Can?t wait to get my car out there for the fall event!

Just realized I haven?t updated my build thread since July after that summer Villains Sportsland event. I got the motor back within 4 days of dropping it off and threw it back into the car. For any locals, I went through Jim Heald at ALM. Patrick Healds dad builds stock car 240 KA?s all motor. Him and his team have won championships with those motors. I def trust him.

Replaced spun bearing, crank, rod, timing chain kit (oem this time) and had everything cleaned. Slapped a new Tomei head gasket on it and called it hood.

We ended up shaking down the motor at Spirit Peaks. The oil cooler was leaking the night before so I got rid of that. The alternator harness plug wasn?t seating properly and we did an oil change.

While I was teaching the lady friend how to do donuts, the turbo manifold cracked in 2 spots and the t2 gasket blew.

You guys probably saw this go viral. After I pulled the turbo manifold off to have the cracks welded, I said fuck it. I told my buddy ?weld the manifold and o2 elbow to the exhaust housing?

So much shit talking and keyboard warriors came out to bash me. Don?t care, I told my fabricator friend ?next time this bitch is coming off, we?re switching to vband housings and your making me a new turbo manifold?

Daniel Reed and I ended up borrowing Zach Farrars 2 car trailer. Loaded up the night before PARCFEST and hit the road at 5am.

We arrived at Pats Acres Racing Complex at about 10:30am. Beat the traffic and ate good breakfast.

PARCFEST had to have been one of the most memorable events this year (next to Summerjam) but I have to say I got so much seat time due to the low driver count!

All the homies were in the pits hanging out. I?m honestly sad that a lot of drivers I wanted to tandem with stayed at home because of the COVID restrictions. Oh well, I can?t complain over more seat time.

I just realized I haven't been doing a good job documenting recent changes on my car.

3 weeks ago a blew my differential. Ring and pinon left the chat! Cameron Moore sold me his extra welded diff. I had my buddy David weld in metal plates. While I had the diff out, I pulled a blow Z32 axle out and install 2 new (used OEM) fresh ones.

Here's my short vlog: https://youtu.be/y5E2nFL1yYA

Here we go! Official big step towards Lone Star Drift?s Drift Week 3 is starting! Robbie will be fabricating a new top mount manifold for the GT2871R with a Tial vband exhaust housing and wastegate! After, we will be getting the NismotronicSA dialed in by @turbogixxertuning in Auburn WA. And we still need Paul from WiseConcepts in Bend Oregon to do touch ups on the fiberglass for Drift Week 3 and @finalbout [emoji31] I hope I can get my car to a car show this year but the calendar is looking insanely packed! I will have to post event details on my website once everything is set in stone. I hope everyone can make it out to the big events this year!

Installed new PBM high clearance tension rods on my s13 today. PartsShopMax always with the hookup.

My radiator core support and driver side tension rod bucket is separating from the frame rail. I?m going to Villains this weekend to have that patched up... John Danyals gave me a few pointers and told me to consider going tube front in the near future. Maybe at the end of the season I?ll talk to a few fabricators to see how much it would cost.

Yeah I always tell people S13's are tin cans, but some people are still convinced you can thrash them without it tearing them apart eventually. All the chassis bracing and spot welding you can do is worth doing!

After my last update regarding the new tension rod installation, I loaded up the 240 to head out to Walla Walla. Since Kurt patched up the passenger side last time, I asked if he could do the other side. I didn?t get detailed photos, but basically the bottom half of the core support separated from the frame rails, tension bucket bolts were missing on the driver side, and one of the sway bar mounting bolts went missing. Kurt decided to make 2 custom bolt brackets to put inside the frame rail (much like the from subframe bolt brackets, but with nuts welded to the brackets). He patched up the lower core support and part of the frame rail that started separating.

Nate also have me a spare muffler and threw it on with a vband if I ever want to swap it out to straight pipe. I really appreciate the Villains Drift guys helping me out for driftweek 3! Highly recommend supporting these guys if you?re looking for angle kits or hydros!

Also made a sticker from the Infamous design Ms Crimsona sent me!

Later that week after the visit to the Villains drift fab shop, I took my s13 up to Auburn WA to visit Kenny. We threw the car on the dyno to see what up we could get out of the new setup. Just to be clear, I went top mount to make maintenance easier, and also I was tired of changing the T2 gasket every month!

I made 350whp, which was not a big difference. But the real gains came from faster spool, greater low end torque, more torque throughout the entire power band. I?m making more then 250lb/tq around 2100rpm lol

I?m really trying to focus on reliability, so I?ve reached my power goals. Now I need to make sure I can maintain this motor for 2021 season... *foreshadowing*

The scaling axis is off between the two graphs but you can get a general idea of the torque gains at 2200. At 3000 you can see it went from 235 to roughly 310 lb/tq. At 4000 it went from 298 to 325!

The turbo spools quicker then before, and it gained more power band, while also gaining more torque!

After the new turbo, frame rail button up, and dyno: I headed to Spirit Peaks Raceway to shake down the motor! That unfortunately didn?t go well. Let?s just say the car felt so amazing! I feathered the throttle throughout the entire track! It felt so good.... and then on the 7th lap, I let Zach Farrar slide the car.

We were both stoked that the car was running tits, so I let Farrar rip it. Half way through the lap, the motor started misfiring and sounded like a Subaru... we blew the head gasket!

Once we got back into the pits, I noticed the vacuum like for the wastegate popped off! We did a compression test and found 1, 2, and 3 popped. We believe the boost spike caused the motor to lean out and lift the head. I was super bummed and had the car loaded on the trailer by 11:30am. :(

After soaking over the condition of my motor, I asked Sheila if I could do a few laps in her BRZ. This car actually does very well drifting! With little horse power, all you have to do is take a wide line and maintain a shallow angle. It was also very fast!

I?ve never changed the head gasket in my life. I?m usually scared to crack open the long block. Typically I take the whole motor out and I give it to somebody to work on. With my current budget I said fuck it I need to learn how to do this. I asked for advice from my motor builder and he told me to do: a compression test and a leak down test. He told me to send him the numbers so we can see what happened.

The compression test numbers are kind of weird. Based off of the way the car was behaving at idle I can could tell that exhaust gases were being pushed into the coolant jacket. While I was doing the compression test, cylinder one and cylinder two were pushing compression between the two cylinders and also into the coolant jackets.

Cylinder three it was very concerning because of the broken spark plug porcelain. Jim Heald and I were both worried that the piston was damaged.

Based off of the data that I gathered from the compression test and the leak down test, it was evident that only the head gasket went bad. It didn?t seem like valves were damaged nor was the pistons damaged.

The one thing that I always fear about taking apart a motor is the timing chain. Especially on these dual cam motors the upper timing chain always confuses me. I went ahead and bought paint pens from Walmart and marked everything like a psychopath.

I don?t think I took any photos of it but I also built a workbench so I could lay all the parts out on a nice surface.

I?d like to repeat I?ve never done this before and my ADHD usually lose shit all the time. Building that workbench was the best decision for this process.

I kept the camp cabs nice and organized facing the correct orientation I even labeled them with white and red paint pens. White being intake red being exhaust. I even organized the shims in a bin in their proper position. Just glancing at one side of the head gasket you can see where the material is missing is where the head gasket blew.

It took about a week to get the head back from the machine shop because they were backed up. I decided to go with new head studs just for peace of mind. I don?t have a micrometer to measure if they had studs were actually stretched but I didn?t want to risk it.

This time around I went with a 1.5 thickness head gasket. Previously it was a 1.0. The machine shop so that the head was pretty straight they only skimmed ten thousandths off.

The machine shop also mentioned that his head was machined off the top quite a bit. Charlie said that if this had warps again they won?t be able to machine the cam side. I have to get a new head maybe I?ll have to do some head work in the future. I?ll leave that to future me to figure out.

Once I got the head together it was pretty late. I was burning the midnight oil because I needed to get to the Lonestar Drift event at the ridge motorsports park.

I actually ended up breaking down. One thing I have learned in life is to never depend on other people. You control the present you control the future you control your goals. If someone says you can?t do it guess what you can. It?s very nice to be able to have a mentor but I don?t have one. I don?t have anybody to teach me how to do this thing called life. It took me a while to figure out how to assemble the timing chain, even the factory service manual procedure didn?t make any sense. When I was trying to assemble everything based off the factory service manual they leave out the steps here and there. It it seems like a few of the steps are out of order. Even watching YouTube videos they don?t tell you the tips and tricks a little advice that you really need to get through the night.

One of these days I?ll have all the tools I?ll need to be able to rebuild the entire engine on my own. I?d like to be able to only have to outsource machine work. I think one of the goals I really want to do is to be able to learn how to assemble the bottom end. Have all the proper digital micrometers and understand the proper procedure on how to check clearances on the crank bearings etc.

by 3:30 AM I made it home. I had to be awake by six to load the trailer up to head to Shelton Washington for the Lonestar Drift event.

I also forgot to mention before headed home I test drove the car around town. Everything seemed to be in order so I went to an industrial park and slid the car around. She seemed tiptop so I was confident that the weekend was going to be a great time!

Lonestar Drift did a collaboration with global time attack! They somehow convinced the Ridge in Motorsports in Park to allow drifters at their beautiful facility. Let?s just say that our drift cars are not as immaculate as those road course guys. To elaborate there are some people leaking liquids truck was pissed at us when we want sliding off course even though we?re in a skid pad and with drifting comes riffraff.

I personally think the event went amazing I didn?t have any issues other than understeering off the course couple times and the track officials got upset over that. I was trying to avoid colliding with Cameron Moore. I?d much rather run over a couple of cones then put a dent in Cameron?s coupe!

The motor held up all day Saturday I even was drifting in third gear on the main road course connecting three or four consecutive corners. It was wild it was like Gatebil! I honestly hope Grid Life ends up coming to this facility it was amazing!

Also the skid pad! The course layout was top notch! It had 1 big 2nd gear sweeper, with a long challenging transition into a hairpin, transition back to 2 more corners. It reminded me of a smaller version of FD Atlanta!

I hope Lone Star will be able to bring us back for another event later this summer. There seems to be mixed opinions on that due to people flying off track and leaking oil all over... we shall see if Losey can somehow convince them otherwise.

Also forgot to mention, the girlfriend and I went down to Medford to drop off a non-rolling shell s13. We ended up towing back her new e36 build!

Good stuff dude! I can relate with the doing projects on your own thing man. I’ve learned a whole lot of lessons by struggling through things when there’s nobody there to help. I’m glad you got the thing back together and had a good time! New powerband looks a lot easier to drive. Keep going dude!
