View Full Version : Flat or Dish steering wheel, what's your preference?

Looking to buy a new wheel here. What's everyone opinions on the flat versus dished steering wheels? Feel like the flat wheels are too far away.

Thoughts? Advantages? Disadvantages?

It all depends on how close you want the wheel. I go for flat dishes, because a QR+deep dish is in my chest. 5'8"

I like flat wheels. I had a grip royal that was slightly concaved and hated it. Flat nardi fo eva.

if the wheel is too far away, get a hub spacer. everything else is personal preference. just don't get one of those shitty GripRoyal wheels

see this is where it depends i'm 5'9 and i like to sit back (usually in cars without bucket seats) so i don't have to fight with the steering wheel which is why i prefer the deeper dish wheels....my arms are extended just enough and my feet aren't on top of the pedals making rev matching heel toe alot easier with the leg space from sitting back farther i like reaching for the pedals.. again its a personal preference but you see same height different choices...

On a similar topic, I bought a 330mm wheel (deep corn) and don't really like it. I just prefer the feeling of a bigger diameter wheel. With this one my car feels like a toy or a cheap go-kart.

So I guess what I'm saying is... Anyone wanna trade?

Dish or flat dosent matter fitment and brand only matter.

I get flat, because I am short 5'6 and already sitting close to the steering wheel (I have to drill my own holes in seat mounts to get close enough to comfortably push in the clutch pedal). I would need t-rex arms to use a deep dish steering wheel.

Currently using a short hub without a quick release.

I perfer dished myself since I have no practical use for a QR. Although, Dish + QR would make it easier to rest your arm/elbow on the door card/out the window like a kool guy.

Disadvantage of dished? Not being able to reach the horn button easily, whilst remaining at 10&2 all proper like.

I've had 2 grip royal wheels and they were both shitty. When I put my hands on them and began to turn, they turned the wheel in the direction that I turned. The fitment was great. The leather one never came apart and the paint one never faded. It was like they were made in China or something. I abused those wheels and they never broke. I couldn't believe it. I paid all that money for those steering wheels and they looked and worked as expected if not better. I was totally dissatisfied with it. And, they were both dish wheels. I didn't even get JDM fanboi points for them. THAT was the worse part. If you're going to make a quality steering wheel, at least offer JDM fanboi points. So, that's my vote.

I like dish wheels personally but I like wheels like sparco makes where the mm dish is I believe 60 something mm instead of typical 90mm like most "jdm" eBay wheels, or momo. So it's not all up in your chest but it's not flat and far away from you

as everyone else has pointed out, it all comes down to ergonomics.

deep dish wheel makes no sense unless you want the wheel closer to you.

on cars like the miata with no adjustable steering column, deep dish helps give you some extra knee clearance.

I get your point, I really do, but you have no idea what you're talking about. As someone who just went from a GR to a Nardi classic, the quality difference is night and day. I never had a problem with my GR, but when put beside the Nardi, it looked like a piece of shit. But the biggest point that discredits what you're saying is the price. GR's have gone up to what, $180 + shipping? I paid $250 shipped for my brand new Nardi. The price difference is negligible when you consider how astoundingly nicer the Nardi is. You keep rocking your spruced up eBay wheels.

thank you

Anyway, I switched from flat wheels for years to a deeper cone Personal Grinta and it's fucking radical. Due to my dumbass cage being in the way I need to have my seat super far back so having the wheel that much closer is neat.

Deep cone is only good so you do not accidentally hit the turn signal and wiper stalks when you drift all sick in your high school parking lot.

I'm tall and having a dished wheel and quick-release is great. With the stock wheel, I couldn't turn my leg to heel-toe. With the wheel closer to me, my knee no longer hits. For reference, the stock wheel is ~3" from the ring to the mounting surface on the steering column, my combination is ~7".

I was told elbows should be relaxed and settle at about a 90* angle. I prefer to have the wheel closer than that. I'm using a works bell short hub, nrg slim qr, and nardi deep. It sits closer than stock just by a bit.

I'm 5'9" and typically sit quite far from the pedals (I like a straight leg and the ability to stretch). As such, having a slightly deeper wheel is convenient so my arms aren't fully extended.

I use a Personal Neo Grinta 330mm (which has a bit of dish, but not nearly as much as a deep corn/cone). It's mated up to an NRG Slim hub and 2.0 QR, and feels great.

To those debating Grip Royal vs Personal/Nardi, the leather on my Personal feels just as nice as my F30 BMW's steering wheel. The quality is astounding for the price. I had a suede OMP before, which was nice, but nothing compared to the Personal.

I dont mind the griproyal type wheels at all. In fact am basically using one, the difference is I paid $45 shipped from china on Alibaba. Dont know why people are buying the same wheels for $200 + (I guess for the paint job?)

But I would be lying if I said I did not bring my stock steering wheel as a back up to my first drift event in case I snapped it in half :)

You'll be very happy with it. Suede wheels do go bad after a while if you don't wear gloves; leather is the right choice for a street car.

I haven't ran the stock wheel in so long that I can't give you an accurate answer on the distance difference, but WB QR and Short Hub will be similar to my setup, which feels very natural. Not too far from stock either way IIRC.

I'm fat and 6'1"... so I like flat wheels. I like my stock s14 wheel more than both aftermarket wheels that came with my former s13. one was super small, so I swapped it for the wheel that was slightly smaller than my stock s14 wheel.... Still would have rather had the stock wheel.

Quick release and short hub. A quick release with a full-sized hub and a concave wheel is basically driving with your tits.

Not really. I run a full sized hub and quick release and used to run a concave wheel and it wasn't an issue. I could have put a small spacer on and still would have been fine.

Obviously you do not understand wheel fitment.
You can buy a cool-looking deep dish wheel with low offset that only requires a small spacer, or you can buy a JNC wheel and take pictures with it in the bathtub.

False. Had a Nardi on an EG. Thought it was awesome. Fanboi's loved it. They thought I was cool. Had instagram been around then, I probably would've been able to post a pic with it and me throwing up the "UCDAICE" sign. Saw the Grip Royal stuff. Tried it out. It shipped from Tennessee. JDMWong fanbois were like "IT'S NOT JDM TYTE Y0!!!!" Stance/Drift fanbois were like "whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa". Wasn't disappointed. Also, I got a grip royal wheel roughly 6 years ago (the 2nd one roughly 5 years), horn, and some sunglasses that don't fit my fat head, all for under $150. Second one was custom and it was like 170. You paying $180, you're DIW.

No, I paid $100 for mine, but that's irrelevant. I got mine used, I'm referring to the price of a new one. According to the website, they are $160 for the basic leather, $180 for the nicer leather, and upwards of $200 for the suede with $8 shipping to FL, and they all look extremely cheap. I've held multiple GR's in leather, wood, and suede and they all feel and look cheap and tacky. A Nardi feels and looks 100x nicer. Not sure why the hell you're saying "False". Put the two beside each other and I will show you the difference in quality. You can't deny facts. Just because you prefer the GR over the Nardi doesn't make it inherently better. The build quality of the Nardi is what makes it better. Period.

If you're choosing the GR because of the price difference, you're a cheap bastard and should probably find a different hobby. You get what you pay for. I paid for a cheap wheel, and got a cheap wheel. I decided to do what I should have done and dropped the coin on a quality wheel, and guess what I got? That's right, a quality wheel.

I'm not sure if we both use "deny" the same way. I never said anything about the build quality of the Nardi. I said that the GR didn't feel cheap. It felt like an aftermarket steering wheel. Just like the Nardi. The difference is a whole generation of Super Street readers and Sharon Soto stalkers never went all goo-goo-gaa-gaa over the GR while rubbing one out to their work/ssr wheels.
Just because you prefer the GR over the Nardi doesn't make it inherently better. The build quality of the Nardi is what makes it better. Period.
If you're choosing the GR because of the price difference, FALSE. I'm choosing something out of Tennessee over something from Italy. I barely like Italian FOOD. I LOOOOOOOVE biscuits.

you're a cheap bastard and should probably find a different hobby.
You're making a mighty grand assumption off a steering wheel. I mean, in the grand scheme, it's two hundred bux in a sea of thousands of dollars. Perhaps you're too up tight for this hobby.
You get what you pay for. I paid for a cheap wheel, and got a cheap wheel. I decided to do what I should have done and dropped the coin on a quality wheel, and guess what I got? That's right, a quality wheel.
I dropped coin on a quality wheel and guess what I got? That's right, a quality wheel. You dropped MORE money on a quality wheel and guess what you got? A more expensive wheel of quality that probably could've garnered you a feature in Import Tuner or at least got you a nifty schwag bag on the East leg of the NOPI Nationals tour. Congrats? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

FYI, the Nardi I had in the EG was legit, new, and nice...as well. Maybe I should go back to when I was 21 with my aftermarket steering wheel choices. Clearly I've aged out of being cool.
