View Full Version : Speedometer failure after SR/MT swap into AT convertible

Whew, I did some searching and didn't come up with anything, so let's see if you guys can help.

I have a 92 convertible that I just swapped in an S13 blacktop and 5-speed. Everything works great except the speedometer, which worked fine before the swap.

I checked the plugs, then swapped the speed sensor out, with no change.

I am wondering anyone else that did an auto->manual swap experienced a similar problem. I assume the that AT monitored speed somehow, so when the control boxes were removed it might have broken the circuit?

Solutions?

No. VSS goes to the cluster first, then to the ECU and auto ECU. Might check to see if the wiring is correct from the swap.

Well, I located the wires for the speedometer in the kick panel (ylw/blk, ylw/blu) and jumped them directly from the sensor plug near the tranny... nada. I guess I don't know 100% that the kick panel wires were the correct ones, but they were in the right location/right color as per the FSM.

I guess the next step is to pull out the gauge cluster and run it direct... that way I know I have the right wires.

A friend rewired my MT SR20DET harness to work in the car and I don't know exactly what changes he made... so I am working in the dark.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Anyone know how to test the signal from the sensor? (voltage? resistance?)

Also, I happened across an article about the SR swap that mentioned using a KA sensor. No one else I knew had to do this, but I am the only one that had a car that started life as an AT so I am not going to assume anything.

Well, jumped the speed sensor wiring from the sender directly to the cluster and it worked. VERY strange, must have been something to do with the fact that I used the MT S13 engine harness in the AT 240SX.
