I built this 1987 RX7 back in 2014 with the intention of keeping it, but life must go on and I have now decided to sell my car.

It is LS1/T56 swapped and has been running beautifully ever since the day it first started up. This car is light weight with tons of torque and is an absolute joy to drive. It puts a smile on my face every time I get on it and has never let me down.

While not suitable for everyday driving, this car would be great for someone who is looking for a weekend driver to tinker with, or to use as a base for building a drift car, or even to part out and rebuild. If you provide the cash, the car is yours and you can do whatever you please with it.

It is currently outfitted with ...

Stance GR+ coilovers
a custom catless exhaust with x-pipe
Crown Victoria 16x7s
205/50ZR-16 BFGoodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2 Summer Tires

The body is in good shape for its age and the paint on it is still decent looking ever since it was repainted 2 years ago.

If I were to keep it, the next things I would add would be some nice swaybars and a limited slip differential, but I figured that the next owner should be the one who chooses what this car gets next.

Everything still seems to work on this 29 year old car, the headlights work, the taillights work, the sunroof works, some of the dash lights work, the wipers work, and the seat belts work.

On the downsides, the windshield washer pump does not work (recently just failed), the power steering whines, the car is extremely loud at highway speeds, has interior rattles, has no a/c, gets decently hot inside the cabin during summer months, might have a coolant leak or burn since the reservoir always seems to get low, and will constantly need self inspections for safety reasons.

The car can be driven safely on the road, but will most likely need to have antique or historic tags for the remainder of its life unless you are able to have it successfully state inspected. This is the reason why it is most suitable as a weekend driver or off-road track/drag/race/drift vehicle.

I am more than willing to allow you to test drive this vehicle if you can prove to me that you have the available funding to purchase the car. Otherwise, please do not contact me.

Thanks!

Phong

BUild Thread

I decided to build an rx7 with an ls1 because I wanted something light and nimble.

Purchased the rx7 for 1400 dollars and trailer-ed it home.

This car was running, had a pretty decent body, everything worked, even the pop up headlights

http://i.imgur.com/5eWvY5i.jpg

The powertrain going into this car was going to be an ls1/t56 combo
I found a t56 with around 80k miles on it, threw it in my car

http://i.imgur.com/3sBumLo.jpg

Then I found an ls1 out of a 98 trans am with pcm and wiring harness.

Looks like enough room for an ls1
http://i.imgur.com/KkdjWid.jpg

The original 13b, seems like a pretty complicated engine, I had no idea what anything was... To me, it was just a chunk of metal with a buncha hoses going out of it. I sold it for 280 bux with the old trans. I was very surprised because the buyer was very interested in it. This thing was leaking oil and had corrosion all over it. He still wanted it.

Had to make room for the t56 by grinding down the trans tunnel

putting a lift plate on the ls1

LS1/T56 Combo going in

Fits better than the old engine, checkout all that room. I used Ronin speedwork pedestal mounts
http://i.imgur.com/2uZYZXW.jpg

Putting the intake manifold back on, everything still fits.

Installed the radiator using some stuff I got from home depot. I cushioned everything to make sure that the radiator won't crack due to vibration

Brazed some copper together to reroute heater hoses

http://i.imgur.com/X4ncvnd.jpg

Then I started working on the exhaust, the stock manifolds fit, but the old flanges had to be cut off. I welded some 2.5 exhaust tubing in place just to test the engine
http://i.imgur.com/IOjMchQ.jpg

I completed the wiring which was fairly easy, but took a long time. Then tried to start it up. At first the engine did not start, and heres the reason why
http://i.imgur.com/qujcdHz.jpg

Cleaned the fuel rails, and the injectors using my own method. Heres the apparatus I used. Some clear tubing and a battery. lol. I poured some pb blaster in the tubing, put my mouth over it and blew into it, then manually fired the injector using the battery.

Engine fired up right up afterwards.

relocated the battery because there was no room in the engine bay, plus it balances out the car better.

Need to replace the front bushings

http://i.imgur.com/62XcwTW.jpg

Burning them off was a bad idea

http://i.imgur.com/ZEx6ArG.jpg

Ended up using this contraption to remove bushings

http://i.imgur.com/SzaByie.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/8BqXEo9.jpg

Used a corvette c4 driveshaft and all I had to do was replace the rear flange for it to fit.

http://i.imgur.com/MbspH19.jpg

Measured and started welding the exhaust together, first were the headers. This is what I came up with

http://i.imgur.com/SHnryas.jpg

Then I welded together the rest. There were no plans or anything, I just tack welded some pieces on the car, took it off and welded it. This was actually pretty easy and enjoyable. The mufflers are from magnaflow and the tips are 4" ones made by cherry bomb

heres how it sounds

Eg-89LMrVO4

The original speedometer was cable driven, and the ls1 uses an analog signal. I ended up using a speedometer out of a honda integra, and retrofitted it into the rx7s gauge cluster.

http://i.imgur.com/PnHDUT4.jpg

I also rolled back the integra odometer, which is laughable since it was so easy to do

Started working on the interior pieces, used a product called leather refinish which is like a leather paint.

http://i.imgur.com/rE3ApFA.jpg

Found some crown vic wheels at the junk yard and cleaned them up

http://i.imgur.com/fBIJEJ8.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/F4RWXgJ.jpg

They were clean... but the lip had a lot of pitting and I wanted them polished.... so I polished them... On my ls1 powered lathe with some sand paper

http://i.imgur.com/4yzKcoo.jpg

Polished out the old lenses. When it comes to wet sanding and polishing, Iam king.

http://i.imgur.com/NhEAqon.jpg

The car runs and drives now it was time to do bodywork and paint. I'm not very good at bodywork so don't laugh...

Sprayed some epoxy primer on and sanded it down.

Sprayed some basecoat on.

Polished out the old tail lights.

AFTER SHOTS, END RESULT. Took several months to complete. This build thread makes it seem easy, but there were plenty of other small things not listed in this thread that needed to be done.
