sorry this sounds stupid, but i was talking to couple people in my auto class, and they were telling me if i get something that is 50 state legal it means that its only CARB legal but if i get caught by the cops it will be illegal to the referee. is this true?? they said its CARB legal meaning that i could possibly pass smog, but if a cop sees it and sends it to a referee, the referee will say that it is illegal and make me pay a fine. is it true or not.

50 state legal means it's not illegal in any of the 50 states of the United States of America.

California: One of the fifty states.
50 state legal: Legal in ANY of the fifty states.

If a part is CARB certified, that means it's legal in California, and will come with a sticker you display in the engine bay - so in the event that a cop checks your shit, he can see it and figure out something else to write you a ticket for...

The people in your auto class are in there for a reason: because they don't know shit.

I thought that meant you have to get the CARB legal piece checked in all 50 states before you can install it.....

CARB certified means that the manufactuer ran multiple tests to prove that their product was deemed Smog-legal/friendly by the people at CARB. Thats why if you ever get pulled over by the police and they give you a ticket for having an intake, but its CARB approved with a CARB-EO#, you can fight the ticket. However, if you smog your car with the CARB approved products, theres a chance that you will not pass smog, even though it is CARB approved.
