View Full Version : First mod?

Sdotrich

I'm just trying to get some suggestions or ideas of what my first mod should/could be... I have a 92 fastback...

This isn't my first toy, so I am well aware of cars/mods and etc...

I guess I should mention what's already do, right?

Intake, header back exhaust, coils, wheels, stripped interior. I believe that's about it...

If you are well aware of your cars and mods, then why are you asking for other people's suggestions? Just go pick a "mod" that you wanna do and do it.

I suggest you get a FOR SALE sign up on your windshield as your first "MOD"

people will usually respond in a frustrated manner when you post a new thread with minimal info, especially when it's a thread that has been posted many times before. you have to put yourself in their shoes; how can you answer a question that depends on so many variables, without the information regarding those variables?
And consider, for users who have been on this site for several years, the frustration of seeing the same question once a month.

also, floridians get extra mad because it is not uncommon for them to have a cromagnon brain which leads them to lash out violently towards things they do not understand, like fire, rain, or threads lacking a proper introductory post of substance.

I get that. Let me go put PROPER INTRODUCTORY information

I am trying to greatly increase my knowledge of my newly acquired 1992 240sx. I would like to know what are the weak point(s) of the vehicle so I can direct my immediate and impenetrable focus on that area. I would like to do so because I will be taking this vehicle to a track and I want to be incredibly prepared. However, if no such part remains to be exist, then which direction would YOU, yourself take to replace first?

Having said that, what should I aim my first mod to be?

careful socal.... you are the florida 2.0 from what has been coming out of there. The socal hoonigan mouth breathers are breeding like roaches.

And PLS do not group me with these Floridiots. I have taste, pride, and self respect for not only myself, but for any of the cars I have own(ed).

Gauges: Water temp (stock is useless), oil pressure, oil temp and possibly a wideband especially if you plan on boosting. This will help you tremendously in seeing your particular car's weak points. Like needing to beef up the cooling and or oiling system.

Checking the state of your bushings, suspension and braking components are obviously also equally important.

understand:

1. that you cannot simply start a thread with a vague two word sentence like "first mod", then have zero information once the thread is opened.

2. look at every thread on zilvia, there is a brief title, and a first post describing the objective of the thread started. it is also good manners to start off the thread with another post if it is dedicated to a particular subject. (zenki's unite, downforce thread, etc.)

just some info to help you new people out. enjoy zilvia, be polite. or whatever, it's the internet, do what you want.

here's a big stinky dump of info i would want if i were just getting into modifying cars:

as crazy said, gauges are important. your stock water temp is typically around 20 years old. if you are on a budget, pieces like the powered by max "evdm" (engine vitals digital meter), are an excellent choice. one unit that can display many parameters cheaply and accurately is indispensable.

keeping your car on the road is priority number one. so go over your entire vehicle and ensure that nothing is going to fall apart and make a big yard sale on the track. more track time, less garage time. (less garage time doesn't mean you can skip out on maintenance, doof.)

once you have a solid platform, you should get out on the track, and identify problem areas.

1. achieve a reliable platform
2. get seat time while it is bone stock
3. identify weak points
4. upgrade weak points

as a rough guide, if road racing is your goal:

i would say start with brakes, (z32's are extremely cost effective. http://importnut.net/category/featured/the-definitive-300zx-brake-swap/)

then a good set of coilovers. don't wuss out on us. get something good, do your research.

add a bucket seat, and at the point you should know where to go next.

for drifting, you want to a slightly different order:

weld your diff

coilovers

seat

then party. (keep in mind drifting is 100% style, and that includes your car. don't show up with some haggard ass piece of shit. that's bad style, man!)(basically, don't do anything you'd see in the doing it wrong thread.)

Sdotrich
03-15-2016, 01:58 PM
To Steez and crazyced, I appreciate it. you think I should replace the diff before I weld it? Pending it's in decent condition?

To the rest of the assholes, I hope you guys run over a nail...

Hey, why the nail remark? Remember, we talked about this? Be polite. Wait 'til I tell your mother about this..

check the condition before welding, of course. you have to drain & clean before welding, then refill and replace the diff gasket after welding. if you're going to replace the diff, you may be able to get away with finding a second hand 2 way differential at a bargain.

I definitely appreciate the help. The picture is awesome dude. Thanks

the picture is not awesome, you're a fuckin moron.

now that you understand that you are a moron, lets take some steps in you becoming less of a moron. hold my hand, i will help you.

you say you want to go to the track. what type of track?

second, you want to take an OLD car and put it in an environment where it will be stress tested. the equivalent of taking an old man and having him run a marathon. there is a good chance of injury here, and/or death. before you take your 20+ year old car to the track, its suggested you get a basic understanding of what makes cars work and how to maintain them.

- tires, most important
- brakes, second most important
- suspension, third most important
- engine / transmission / drivetrain - last of the importants

its up to you to inspect everything and then, then you can take it to the track and be "hardcore"

until you break something, need to tow it home, and feel like a dumbass for not checking one or more of the above important things that failed

dont worry, you have a lifetime to learn

Anyway.....

-download factory service manual

-do all the maintenance, ALL of it

That alone will take you a long ass time

-evaluate yourself and your real budget. Make realistic goals, several spreadsheets, genuinely investigate if you care to be involved in motorsports.

If you took an instagram photo of your stock ass car with the tags/keywords " jdm drift s13 racecar" etc you already lost

He has valid points that you dismiss because "you don't want to hear them". If anyone needs to calm down, it would be yourself. You got flamed and now you're on the defensive. Relax dude, it's a car forum on the internet. You're not the only one that asks stupid questions.

Now, with that said, read some topics and decide for yourself what your first mod should be. What are your goals? Generally speaking, you have to learn to walk before you can run. Having the car stop and handle the way you want plays a larger role in the grand scheme of things. Those would be my first areas to address. As the old saying goes, "What's power, without control?".

Ka-t.org

Here

Avoid the facebook groups, and don't bother making posts anywhere since you're just gonna do maintenance to make sure the vehicle is properly running before modifications.

Read the hundreds of ka vs Sr debates.

Read up on how engines work

Before you buy anything google reviews on that part and the company you will buy from

Im gonna remind you to make spreadsheets of stuff you need or want

Make one with a Kat,sr20 swap, and rb/jz each one with +/- 10% and a rebuild which varies on prices

There, you have 6 months of homework ahead of you. You shouldn't need to even post here unless its some off topic nonsense, you need help using a new tool, or you wanna ask somebody some shit that you could have easily found by just reading the thread.

well, given the s13 is now 24+ years old, i would say THE ENTIRE CAR!!!

your first "mod" should be replacing all of the bushings, control arms, ball joints and dampers on the car... that is if the engine isnt leaking oil every where and runs decently.

with cars this old, there really isnt a "first mod" given general maintenance and care for these cars ended 10-15 years ago...

bro I'm 21. I got in the 240 game to have a old, reliable, fast, good looking car. I am far from all of my goals except for the old. That being said I did the same shit. I posted a dumb question my first day on zilvia....look at my threads.

If you want a good 240 its going to take time and money..lots of both. I wanted the fastest car when I bought it but since I've had it and looked and thousands of threads I can see that the end of the road isn't coming soon.

Sit down look at your goals for the car and do just do man. look at post from all forums and all sites take it all with a grain of salt. Improve your knowledge by yourself. If you have a question that you think someone else will think is dumb put it in small questions...less flaming there. or search but even I get tired of see threads where some one just says search.
