Tein was the top dog coils as far as the US market and one of the few jdm coils people knew about at the time other then JIC.

I'd still rock top of the line tein then Fortueless auto povery ass coilovers.

I got my first S13 in 2000 and the local speed shops didn't have any performance parts for it. Their response was something along the lines of "why stock stuff for a ten year old car?" and they only really catered to Civics, Integras, and Eclipses.

I lowered it on Sprint Springs, had some bangin' "hyper black" Ace Alloy wheels with crappy offsets (had no clue what that was back then). Clear bumper lights galore.

In 2001, I was apparently the first person to order an S15 conversion from whatever place it was. They took my Bomex body kit and sent it off to China to make a mold so they could make/sell copies. Took like 7 months to get everything and the fenders they sent were for an S14, so I had to hand make my own conversion fenders. I was pretty mad, but they sent me a Type X wing a whole year later to make up for it, lol.

I thought I was so cool:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y240/lost_180/wing1.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/lost_180/media/wing1.jpg.html)

Can't forget APC products, they were lame even back then, but I still had a steering wheel. Had a legit MOMO shift knob though:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y240/lost_180/DSCF3835.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/lost_180/media/DSCF3835.jpg.html)

By 2003 I had an SR swap featuring an SSAutoChrome manifold and turbo kit. The turbo lasted a whole two glorious weeks before it crapped itself, luckily I kept the stock T25. The manifold lasted a good 2-3 years before I sold the car.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y240/lost_180/3f293d0c.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/lost_180/media/3f293d0c.jpg.html)

At least the rear had 180SX tail lights, the only "upgrade" option back then, before the crappy "euro" lights started coming out.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y240/lost_180/DSCF3989.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/lost_180/media/DSCF3989.jpg.html)

I might even still have a Super Street with "Drifter X" on the cover.

It's like a trip down memory lane in here, lol.

Not sure what youve got against Fortune Auto... Ive been running their V4 (i think) coilovers for the last few years, daily drove the car on them up until a month ago and have had zero issues with them. Infact they ride much like my old JIC FLT-A2s/FLT-ARs and Buddy Club Racing Specs did (which were all $2500 coilovers).

Dont remember who originally took this picture (I do not take credit for it), but my car parked next to ixfxi 's car back at the 2002 240sx national convention (I think the only successful 240sx convention.. dunno why they tried to move it outside of socal, at the time i think socal had the strongest scene of 240s).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v72/streetphase/Dscn0132.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/streetphase/media/Dscn0132.jpg.html)

Good times though. This thing called ebay was questionable for parts, China didn't know how to knock off parts back than, so whenever going to a 240sx meet, it was like motivation, drooling over all the legit builds. Everything was exciting back than. I was 18 years old with my first car.. though maybe i was just excited overall due to being new to it.

P.S. Freshalloy was the S chassis forum to go to imo.

I remember in 2003 when NFS underground came out. I played with the Skyline which eventually led me to the S14 and to Zilvia. Those were the days. The forum was waaay more active. Hell I would have damn near sold my left nut to have been a mod then.

I would browse autotrader looking at Kouki's dreaming of having an LE. Seeing stock koukis in decent shape for 7-10K. Dreaming of having a RB26. Just knowing I would one day. Thinking of the underlights I would have.

LOL, I had the same thing. I thought zilvia sucked back then though, too much flaming not enough tech.

I got a little older, wife said one day "I kinda miss that old 240." So I bought her a Kouki, because I wanted one so bad back then but couldn't afford it.

I'm not sure about $2500 silvia front ends, but I remember $800 silvia front ends. S13 silvia aero bumpers for $350-500. Get a full s13 red top sr20det swap for $1500 or an s13 sr20det black top swap for $1600-1800.

Bought my first 89 s13 coupe with a healthy ka24de swap, Trust catback, Intrax Springs w/ KYB GR2 struts, Greddy front strut bar, and K&N Filter for $1200 back in 2000. Sr20 swapped in 2001 and still own the car now. And I concur that Freshalloy was THE FORUM for 240sx back in its hey day. I actually still go back on there from time to time to do some research, great tech threads and posts on there still even if the information is "old" now.

Get a full s13 red top sr20det swap for $1500 or an s13 sr20det black top swap for $1600-1800...

Ooooh to be young and reasonable again.

Take a look a jspec.com's friends cars page. Most these cars are all early 2000's. Look at the car now vs now. So much better back then. Then again these were jspec customers as well so a diff demograph.

....yeahhhh I don't remember that shit ever being remotely the case.

I do remember $2,700 SR20's and $10k Koukis.

JARCO used to sell front clips for like $3,500.

The only difference in price is location most of the time and knowing where to buy from for great prices. :naughty:

Cartune Motorsports swapped an s13 red top sr20det into a buddy's fast back in 2003 or 2004 for $2500. From driving into their shop with a stock ka24de and driving out of their shop a week later with a healthy sr20det.

Memories... I haven't seen an authentic, clean Apexi n1 dual in years!

I remember buying my first swap, type X blacktop clip, from Rims n' Things. It was 3k delivered. Came with Kei Office coils, and some random Juran bits. I didn't even know what those brands were at the time the clip arrived.

I was the only sr car I knew of in my area (come to find out years later, there were two more a bit north of me).

I saved up forever to buy a S14 when I turned 16 in 2003. Found a 96 with 87k for $4500 that was pretty mint, eventually put D2 coilovers on and bought a Boost Designs KA-T kit that I never installed. Sold it for about 3k in 2007-08 for a SUV. I loved that car, often wonder if it's still alive.

There were good sites back then that had the jdm stuff for sale. They just fell through. I can't totally remember the names, but I have a stack of old school shit I printed out back then. Auto-imaging?, takakaira, projectD? etc. Had all the JDM good stuff. Target-r, veilside, silk road, GPsport, "type X" tails, pretty much anything in business back then etc. Lets see 2000 I was 16. Just got license. By the end of high school I was rocking tein type flex (think I was one of the firsts, definitely in my state, still on car today btw lol), hotshot header, random technologies catalytic converter, 2.5 inch custom exhaust with HKS hi-power muffler sitting on tenzo mean 6 wheels LOL. The sport max of the day, the only set of fake wheels I've ever bought. It wasn't until after high school (real job) I went super crazy. 04,05,06 and started with the KTS titanium exhaust, SPL arms, AMS turbo kit, Cusco arms, Carbing tower bar, JUN parts, advans, greddy brakes, silvia front, bricks, 5 lug, r32 GTR wheels, nismo bits etc. Places like panda garage and jspec got me a few japan sided items. Enjuku racing started in 05 or 06. I went through them on a few things to. Come to think of it, the 240sx is one of the reasons I am such a good saver. I wanted all the cool shit because of option magazine etc back then. Seeing them in videos and what not, its what you got accustomed to seeing because there was no US market so to speak. So I was forced to save. The car itself helped mold me in a way. Which I am thankful for. I didn't make more than 12 bucks an hour back then.

come to think of it, the picture in my avatar of the wheel and brake is about 10-11 years old or so lol. The day I got the advans. First real wheels, after the r32 GTR's OEM......which coincidentally I now I have a r32 GTR, so it worked out nicely lol.

Cute, but...

a)
+15 isn't really that a high an offset, they're just too narrow... but hey I've owned them since the mid/late '00s, when I was just a broke kid and before the whole hellaflush thing really happened. I've also got a bunch of various OEM Alloys I run depending on what tires hold air, if you really want to talk about weak offsets.

b)
I've never understood the hate for something that gets regular use, like when people laugh at dudes who put tow packages on their car. (then they show up at the track with a bunch of tools and tires loaded up on a utility trailer and eat their words) Sure, the look may not be your taste, but if there's no better solution to serve the purpose, what are you gonna do, you know? For what it's worth, since the S13 is no longer daily driven, my rack has been moved over onto my Volvo, so the eyesore is no more. ;)

Chicago had Galaxy. Feng Auto is still around.http://www.fengauto.com

I checked their inventory daily back in college. They had all sorts of 80's and 90's Japanese sports cars. 240s, MR2s, Hondas, MKIII Supras etc. Stuff always sold in a few days. Looks like it's just typical used car crap now.

I had an '86 RX7 in 2004 and the '93 240 in 2005. It had a B&M shifter, lightweight flywheel, 4-1 custom headers that went straight to the cat and a K&N filter. Felt like a torque monster compared to my FC.

I love these kind of threads. I love when no one knew what a 240sx was and you could pick up a KA24DE for $150.... damn we're getting old.

Parents bought my first 240sx (first semester of senior year, 04'). No online pictures of when my parents bought it but it had chrome wheels and a chrome exhaust tip. Hahaha.

2006:

Late 06' - Decided to go back to stock bumper. Paid $200+ for that Injen intake and $500 something for the HKS Hi-Power exhaust (I still have it too)

Something I like to know from people. What was it like the first time you drove/ride in a boosted 240?

For me it was my buddies notchtop SR s14 as a passenger. Having only seen and heard videos it was crazy to hear an SR in person. It was weird how it took off like a bat outta hell, but had no torque at all. Just like it kept going faster but with no push.

I remember us doing 110mph down back country roads. Good times.

First turbo car i ever sat in was my friends built s13 coupe ka-t. Had a t3 that was just about maxed, it absolutely flew. Threw me back into the seat and scared the shit out of me when he had it sideways going on an onramp to the highway. He set it to low bost and let me drive it, by far the most nervous ive ever been was driving his freshly built car trying not to break it.
The second turbo car i ever sat in was my racecar. mk2 jetta with a 1.8t at about 28psi.. Also very quick car, but did not throw me back into the seat like the s13 did, or at least how i remember anyways.

I know im not as old as some of you, but that's my experience

When I got my S14 in 2002, I hadn't heard of drifting. I remember a guy came up to me at a gas station and said "nice 240. do you drift?" I honestly thought he was asking if I drove close behind 18 wheelers to get better gas mileage.

Pretty sure Chuck's (90 dgrz) S13 was the first car I ever rode in that was SR, up at WSIR. It was kinda hard to imagine that it was the same car, just based on how different it felt with the added power, and the stiffer, lower suspension. My car was still equipped with an automatic single cam at the time.

The s13 i sat in was built in the 90's and he still owns it today, still a scary fast car. He bought it new from the factory in '93 (older guy) and by far is the nicest s13 i've ever seen and been in. No bodykits or anything, just optional aero, mudflaps, and if you look hard enough you can see the z32 brakes poking out, everything else looks OEM. He has shown me pictures of some of the meets he went to, and the cars looked so good then, none of this hoonigan stuff from today, like people to pride in their vehicles..

I drove a few turbo cars before I drove a turbo 240. I had a 95 Neon that went through 2 different turbo setups before I decided on a motor swap. The motor swap made the car rather useless, but fun as hell.

The 240 was a KA-T. It didn't pull all that strong at first, to be honest. But, I had come out of a turbo 4 so I was kinda used to it. The 2nd setup that we put in was less "backyard homebrew" and more "custome DIY". I think the first setup was the equivalent of a hoonibro setup today...but back in like 99/00. The second setup was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much fun. I think I'm the only person on this forum who's never owned an SR 240. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The one and only time I drove an SR240 was in my test drive before buying it. I then proceeded to bring it home and strip it out to hopefully give it a more decent life. That was close to a year ago. :hs:

I can feel your pain. I sold my SR S13 back in 2005 for those reasons. Then one day a few years ago my wife says "you know, I kinda miss your old 240, that car was fun" and I quickly found 'her' a kouki that needed some work. :naughty:

It's been a slow resto-mod build, hoping this is the year we finally fix the exterior. Quarter panel was banged up with we got it, and hood paint is fried.

Best option is to find a local importer for an SR so you can go inspect it, I got lucky and found a front clip and it made the swap so much easier. Basically just building a fun street car now.

Cost of living is very low here. Single income househould with a wife and kid does not free up a lot of funds. No worries though, I am looking for an SR now.

Plan to get the engine and then get the parts for it, piece by piece, check by check until it is ready to swap.

Wages blow is the problem.

Ever notice how all the cool cars are in high cost areas? That's cause you have higher paying more affluent jobs there.

Sure, a $4,400 mortgage sucks, but if you are pulling in $10,000 a month, not so bad. Compare that to a $700 mortgage and $2,100 a month.

In both cases your mortgage is 40% of your income, but in the first example you have a shit ton more cash.

Well please tell us all about all the affordable housing and good paying jobs in Colorado.

$4k mortgage is a $800k home @ 30yrs
$700 mortgage is a $100k home @ 15 years

$2,100 a month is national average income of $45k a year.

$10k a month is $200k a year. This also puts you in the 1% everyone bitches about.

Conservative financial planners argue 25-28% of your GROSS income for a mortgage. Pragmatists state 35% is what most will have to live with due to many factors. 40% net is actually really good considering we lose 30-50% of our gross income to taxes, healtcare and 401k.

Do you really want me to get into it? Because I kinda feel like that may have been rhetorical.

Also you're throwing out a ton of abstract numbers that really have no bearing on anything since dollar value and land/property value are going to vary widely depending on where we're talking about. That also has no bearing on personal financial planning.

Literally all I am saying is that spending 40% of your monthly income (and I was referring to net income, not gross because why would you count money that you know will never hit your pockets?) on your mortgage is causing too narrow a margin to live off of comfortably. When we were looking to buy our house, our budget was determined by a monthly mortgage that would only utilize a third (33%) of our household's net income after having deducted a certain percentage for short term savings. (in addition to our long term 401k Plan) This means we knew how much we could spend while being able still live comfortably within our means; allowing us to save up for family vacations, spend a bit here and there on home improvements as well as my S13, and be prepared for unforeseen expenditures like if one of our daily drivers should take a crap. It also means that as our income increases as our careers continue to progress, we have an even smaller portion that is required to be paid on our house, meaning we can spend that extra bit on more fun, paying the house off quicker, padding our short term savings that little bit more, or some combination of all three.

This sort of planning I think applies to anyone who would consider themselves 'middle-class' Though I would agree that as you continue to climb into higher tax brackets making multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars annually or more, restricting your allowance for a mortgage isn't as necessary, since it'd be pretty hard to spend 2/3 of your $200k income on the rest of your living expenses. It'd still be smart though to keep a lower cashflow in the event that you are unable to work, or get laid off or the like.

The number 1 rule to personal finance and economics should always be preparing for personal preservation, no matter your income.

As for Colorado, our local economy is doing really well currently, meaning a fair amount of well paying jobs for sure. That said, we also are currently dealing with a TON of people moving here from other states that is driving property values to some over-inflated prices for sure. That doesn't mean you should be living outside of your means, you know?

so yeah... the old days, amirite?:ugh:

I remember when Autobacs opened up in Garden Grove/Stanton and it was always crowded with people just hangin out. That was the place to go see cool shit.

And the little pizza place next door, what was that place called? I think at one point there was a weekly meet there.

Autobacs' parking lot always felt like a mini car-show no matter what day you went.

I remember in the early 2000s when NICE stock 240sx parts could be had. It's nearly impossible these days. Nice 5spd kouki s14s with 50-100k were $12-14k

I remember going to Signal Auto in Torrance to buy a pair of tickets to the RSR Drift Festival in Irwindale back in 03

D1 USA shortly after followed which was cool, that was when you saw SR's and 4AG's n shit
until Formula D came with V8 cars and Vipers and shit, MOPAR and FORD works teams, destroying the grass roots drifting style with stock 4cyl engines no longer being competitive

How I miss the old days, that's why I root for drivers with 2JZ's now, Go Daigo and Andy Gray

I went to the first D1 event at Englishtown. You could walk pits, see cars that you could actually get into. team orange gave ride alongs at night. So friggin' fun. Not one single FD event has been as fun as that...EVER. Drift days were common too. Final Bout is the closest thing we have to that now. :-/

This. I went to D1 back in 2005(?) at Soldier Field and later in 2009(?) or whatever. Billion times cooler then FD.

D1 was cool back in the early days, sure. but the event they held in Anaheim in '09 was an absolute disaster.

Well in Chicago there was a big dust up at the event. Some confusion over a "one more time" call, judging points and language barriers led Team Orange to stage their car. Apparently Team Orange had been eliminated and an argument arose from this. Once again, language barrier causing the confusion and frustration.

The Team Orange driver, in anger, then took off for the pits and struck one of the track workers. (Either running over his foot or knocking him down). No one was seriously injured but everyone was pissed off and I think try refused to drive for the last few laps. I recall they ended up getting a $18-20k fine. I believe that was the biggest contributor to the fallout over D1 USA campaigning.

The event also featured a bunch of grass roots guys like Derrick King and Bill Cook. Derricks still on the forms, he may have more back stage insite.

There was a lot of debate over the driftbox's usage in scoring and the event itself felt poorly planned and sloppily executed with lots of downtime and many driver's calling foul due to alleged favoritism. All-in-all it was a complete mess that climaxed with a fan deciding to run out on track to retrieve a part of a car that had broken off in the previous run when track marshals didn't notice/care about clearing the track for the next pass. Yes, a random spectator from the grandstands was able to make his way onto the middle of the race track and back to his seat without difficulty. (Security didn't even come to escort him out for a good few minutes after he was back at his seat) I don't recall if this was before or after the crowd had littered the track with the t-shirts a bail bondsman had been firing off from the track during one of the intermissions with the stunt bike riders.

A complete mess.
