View Full Version : Manual wiring for headlight motors.

Ok I have searched Zilvia, as well as other sites and I have the FSM and cannot figure out what I need to, but keep in mind I am no wiring master. I'm currently in the process of cleaning up the wiring on my 91 s13 with an s14 KA. The previous owner had done a rough job with the swap and there were fuse/relay boxes loosely hanging, so I decided to go through the whole car and remove all the wiring and loose connections not in use. While at it I figured now would be a good time to relocate the fuse and relay box to the inside of the car as well as remove the switches on the steering column and replace them with switches on the dash. The headlights were not difficult to rewire on their own circuit to an on-off-on toggle switch for highs-off-lows. Now I'm starting to try to figure out how to wire the headlight motors to a momentary on-off-on switch and I can't even start to figure out how to do it looking at the FSM. I understand they run through a series of relays and the timer so that they know when they have reached full open and full closed. I do not care if that feature is gone. I am just looking to hold the momentary for up and release once they are at full up and hold the down momentary until they are all the way down, and occasionally just bump them up/down to set sleepy eyes whenever I want. If someone could tell me what wires are which for ground up and down, I would greatly appreciate it!! Thanks for any help you guys can give me!

Here is the schematic for people smarter than me. I have looked it over a ton and I can't figure out what it means, the partial circle thing throws me off completely.

Update: I have taken a battery and some wire and touched contacts and have only came out more confused. 5 is ground, that I am certain of. Touching contact 2 or 3 resulted in movement but for seemingly no sure way. One would move up and the seem t short, and the other would move some but then seem to just lose contact. I would mess with it for a while then it would seem to lose contact one way or the other. Can anyone answer whether the motor is suppose to go all the way around to go up and down or is it supposed to go opposite directions for either function? And if it is supposed to go opposite is the arm off the motor supposed to face the front or rear of the car

The motor only goes one way. There is a park switch inside the gear box part of the motor so it knows when to stop.
The circle thing up top is the circuitry for the park switches. The 3/4 circles are the contacts for up and down.
The best way to do this would be to put it back to stock and cut the brown wire on the headlight button for sleepy mode. But if you want to do two separate momentary swicthes...it would be easier to eliminate the park circuit and just wire the switches to the motor +/-

Ok so basically the motor should do 180° for up and then a 180° in the same direction for down?

Thank you for your help. I think I'm going to attempt to eliminate the park switches and run it to a single switch that will power the motor like you suggested. I'll keep this thread posted if it works, thank you for your input!
