Hi guys,
Y'all ever heard of a car having a salvage title because it was stolen? No damage done to it according to the seller.
And if anyone can help me with researching a vin #, that would be super helpful.
Also, what do you think is a reasonable price for a salvage auto 1995 base model?
Thanks!

very common. in the normal world... most car thieves will only take bits and pieces of a car if theyre not just boosting it for a joy ride (instead of stripping it to a shell like they do with hondas and 240s)

$2000-$3000 seems to be the going rate if the car is in decent shape.

Make sure and check everything over because lets face it, sellers would lie their azz off to make the sale.

Some cars MIGHT be worth $4K IF it is indeed perfect and the replacement parts were all oem or better.

For a salvage title 240 I would pay a few more pennies on the dollar than no title

Yeah it is a 240sx but I am just trying to make the best informed decision that I can. I read somewhere that one should calculate a salvage value by market retail + trade in value divided by 2 times 75-80% and so I ended up with 1300 and he wants 3500. I have yet to test drive it. I was just feeling out your thoughts on the subject. Thanks for the responses.

3500 is not a bad price IF everything works and the shell is rust free. But offer him 2700 cash and negotiate from there AFTER a test drive and a solid look over.

You may also want to utilize the carfax thread on here and see if the report turns up anything to contradict the seller's story. The report might be able to give you more detail to confirm it was salvaged due to theft and not from an accident.

That is not a bad idea, but unfortunately you can't go solely off carfax because every accident might not be reported.

Check ur state with regards to insuring and registering that salvage title. Some require inspections etc. while some states may not. It is always best to steer clear of salvage titles IMHO unless it is super cheap like 1k for a running car etc.. and ur willing to write it off at any point. Basically have fun with it and don't expect to get a return.

I would carfax it, AND put the car on a lift and THOROUGHLY inspect the undercarriage, including subframes/engine cradle, radiator support, floorpan of trunk, etc.
Many cars get salvaged out due to theft. If the car was only worth $4-5k to begin with, and the thief busts out a lock cylinder and the steering column, they'll call that $2k in damage right there and write off the car. Still clean straight chassis, just a "bad" title.

^ yeah but you do realize we're talking about an s-chassis, right? there are so many variables involved here, more than just a title being salvaged or not.

ever priced out an oem seat? all a thief needs to do is cut the seats, each seat is like over 3000 usd new from nissan. makes no sense.

i would give the car a thorough examination and then decide. if it has no rust or major damage, snatch it up. it could be a great spare car.

That thread hasn't been update with a carfax report for a while, but it's still worth trying.

If you are willing to drop more than $500 on a car a <$50 carfax bill shouldn't be something to cheap out on. Buy it yourself stop being so damn cheap.
