View Full Version : KAAZ differential worries.

Hello,
You may have read the thread i made last week concerning the destruction of my ring gear and pinion. I finally got my hands on a new stock diff, and we swapped the KAAZ into it with extreme care. When assembled, there was no backlash, and everything bolted up perfectly, as opposed to before.

We put it back on the car and held our breath as I feathered the clutch. No grinding, no extremely loud and bad noises.

We bring the car to parking lot to break in the diff and everything seems to be going well. The diff is making a lot of creaking and clunking sounds. I cant help but to be worried that something else is going to break. If i drive around in circles at full lock, in gear, it groans and pops and clunks. I dont like these sounds.

Even after a full half hour of breaking it in, its chirping the tires and clunking when driving around bends, especially at low speed. At about 35 mph, its acting up enough that it's bothersome. Is this normal?

Would all of you wit 2 way diffs explain the types of sounds I should be hearing? The last thing I need is to break another pinion, or mess up this diff.

thanks.

any sounds while in gear and the wheel turned to any angle will be natural. going straight you shouldn't hear sounds.

example of sounds: clunking, popping, clunking....

there was absolutely no backlash what so ever? A small amount of backlash is necessary so the the teeth on the gears contact properly.

its hard to describe, but clunking noises and stuff is normal. Put some miles on it and it will quiet and smooth out somewhat.

I don' know about the groaning and creaking, but the pops and clunks and chattering are normal. Same with the tire chirping. My Kaaz 2 way makes a heck of a racket, and has been working very well for a year now.
Groaning and creaking makes me think of bending metal, wich I would consider very bad. I think I saw in your first post that you had metal subframe spacers? If yes, that those little guys send lots of noise into the interior of the car. They would be partly to blame for how much noise you hear.

my nismo is super quiet. SUPER quiet
kaaz seems louder for the most part
add some LSD additive might quiet it down
low speed turns, is it a slight turn in road or a 90 degree turn? my friends is a old kaaz and its been used and abused and it clunks on low angle, low speed turns and SUPER anoying

as for new kaaz, my friends havethem and it not terribly loud. mmm

as for first hand, my nismo is mega quiet so im not too sure how your KAAZ should sound. call KAAZ usa on monday, thye have a toll free number on their website, i think.

Its all normal. The clunking and chirping at slow speeds through turns. Did you change the fluid after break in? It will quiet down a lot more if you change it. DO NOT USE SYNTHETIC. I have the newer kaaz 2way as well. Some additive might help as well. Mine always gets super quiet after I change the oil. I only hear normal chirps but no clunking after the oil change.

Ok ive been driving it around a bit for the past day and it has quieted a bit. We broke it in with Valvoline 80-90 and refilled with the KAAZ fluid afterwards. Im going to give it a couple days of easy driving and see what happens.

weld locd = all the noises, non of the un-predictability.

Don't worry too much. If the back lash is correct and the unit was installed
right this time, the unit will be fine. All the clunks and chirps you are hearing
is normal. Maybe louder than normal since you have the subframe bushing.
Also, if your tire size is between 195~215 the noise may be louder than
using a 235 or wider tire.
Your unit is still new and very tight. Put some miles on it so the clutch plates will seat into each other properly. It should quiet down a little. Unlike Nismo with less initial torque setting, our unit will always have minor clunking noise when turning slow since our unit is set with more initial torque and very tight.
These noise is also a sign that the clutch pack is still very tight and in good
condition. I would worry more when the noise goes away completely on a
240 unit. Please e-mail us or call us anytime for further assistance.

Like it was said before going straight with a kaaz there is always a chance that your tires might chirp and definatley left or right turns, I just blew up my NISMO 2 way about three or four weeks ago and all I did was swap out the ring and pinion for a stock set almost no backlash fluid was changed and I am the type of person that just follows directions just because if you do and something happens then you have an excuses so I bought the NISMO gear oil and used it. Mine is still clunking and chirping. It will be fine just as long as you put it together properly (it is kind of hard to mess it up) well I guess you could shim it wrong.................................ok so there are a few things that can go wrong.
