Hey guys, as you probably know by now my 240 was totalled awhile back and have been working my way up to another car. Im in a really tough situation, I cant decide between the 2. I put so much money and time into my 240 and have all these memories with it . The deciding factor though is which will I get the better driving exp. out of? I dont wanna show off (looks or speed wise) but would rather walk away with the car that will leave me with the better memories.
What do you guys think? I had the 240 for close to 3 years and ive driven the 7 a couple of times but I dont think I can compare them considering ive had a lot more time with the 240.
Hey man, thats a choice that could almost be dictated by how much money you wish to spend! If money is a concern, then the 240SX would be the better choice. I am going to assume that money is not a concern here.
I would go with the FD for a few reasons
1. Weight distrubution is almost Perfect at stock.
2. i know how to build rotarys, and IMO, it is more simple than building a piston engine
3. You put a full exhuast (turbo back) on these turbo rotarys, and it is common to gain 50 Horsepower to the wheels.
4. Rotarys respond well to mods...especially turbo rotarys (see above)
5. You can fit some massive tires under those FD's wheel wells.
6. With a mildy ported single turbo rotary with good engine management, you can see 500 Horsepower easily. (although the enigne will probably last 30,000 miles )
7. The car is freaking beautifull in stock form.
Those are just a few reasons why i like it!
All in all though, i love my S13, and love the memories i have made in it. And its been real reliable. If i had lots of money, i would be tempted to build both!

No, initially money isnt a big concern. But I wouldnt like to be spending my entire paycheck on fixing the car. As far as money, it wouldnt make a huge impact, maybe 2 months difference in waiting.

whoa its gonna only last 30,000 miles!? are you serious... that sux just for that id go ahead and get an s13 and get an sr20. yeh sure you can get more power from the rotary but 30,000miles....c'mon. i hope you have the money to rebuild it if you do then go ahead and get teh fd

30k miles with the motor ported. With no port, a lot longer. Depends on how you maintain it really.

The only reason it would only last around 30,00 miles, is becasue of the port job. You could still have around 350 horsepower without a port job and have it last longer

FD is a 3rd gen RX7 a #### dope car but not nearly as reliable as our cars(read more money to mantain)

I'd go with the s13 personally. Reliability is the main reason. If I had an unlimited bank account, I'd probably get the FD, but then again, If i had an unlimited bank account, i'd also get an s12, s13, s14, skyline, MR2... the list goes on and on and on and......

Well, I have been on both sides, still a member of se rx7 club, I have owned 2nd & 3rd gen. Rotaries are sweet, and I will alwys love them but I wanted something with some longevity. I built my best friends 95 r2, t-78, dowel pins , ceramic seals and all. It dynoed at 432rwhp at 17 lbs of boost. The downfall being you should expect about 80,000 miles from a motor if that. Then the rebuilding process has to start again. And a good motor will set you back about 5000. And that is with me doing the labor of setting it in myself. As far as cost wise, it will take about 20,000 in upgrades to achieve 400 to 500rwhp reliable. It would depend on how deep your pockets were, it would cost alot more to make a wankel fast.

hmm, 20k to get it to 400-500hp at a reliable level? I usually dont play tuning scenarios out but lets say you get the motor from Rotary Reliablity (close by shop, supposedly top quality work). 13B from them with 3mm ceramic seals and hayes o-rings, pretty much the works for 5500. That 13B running on the stock turbo should last quite some time with those kinda upgrades. Upgrade the turbo, run higher boost levels, and the motor should stay intact for up to 80k miles if properly maintained. What do you think? Sound over optimistic? A couple of the guys on the forum have over 100k miles on the original engine while others have burned them out after putting only about 3k on. Sounds like it has to do a lot with maintanince,
