View Full Version : Starter spins with direct power from battery but not with key

Really weird problem.
Not sure if it's the starter or something else... Basically, turning the key won't spin the starter, but running 12v power directly to it will make it crank. Tested the voltage on the key ignition (barrel) and that seems fine. There's no alarm installed either. It seems like there's something in between screwing things up, but I'm not sure what it is.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Neutral safety switch behind clutch pedal. This happened to me.

Or just jump the clutch interlock relay which is tucked into the fender next to the battery.

Check if the ignition switch is grounding , or if the connecter behind it has come lose which is very comin

Been chasing this issue for a long time myself. I ended up wiring my own relay to the starter solenoid. And I manually switch it on now when it's time to start. I tried all the above suggestions and it was still clicking. That's what led to my bypass.

No need to add an additional relay, just jump the clutch interlock relay and be done with it. They always go out on S13s.

First you have to find out what's wrong, then deside the best fix for you. If its just the neutral switch or interlock then address those issues accordingly. If its a broken trigger wire why would you do any of the other stuff mentioned in this thread. And that seems to be the issue! Test for 12v ignition on the signal wire, blah blah blah!

Tried running a wired directly from the clutch interlock wiring, still had the problem.

No. You need to bypass the clutch interlock relay, jump the 12v signal to the starter with two spade connectors and a short piece of wire. The relay is sitting in the passengers side fender, jump the harness side NOT the relay.
I also had an issue years ago were my starter ended up being at fault and would not mesh with the flywheel and I would just get a loud clunk of the solenoid pushing the gear into the back of the flywheel. Replaced the starter and all seemed to be well until a couple months later my clutch interlock relay went on the car.

So my neutral safety switch is already bypassed....going to try jumping the relay again...it's already been jumped w/ no reaction

Neutral safety switch is on the transmission, you're looking for the clutch interlock relay. You're not going to be jumping the relay but rather the plug that plugs into the relay. It's a 30a circuit that goes from the front fusebox to the ignition cylinder then to the clutch interlock relay and then off to the starter 12v signal. From what I remember one of the wires is black with a yellow trace, this is the line you're going to be jumping. If you jump the clutch pedal wires you're not going to do anything, make sure you're jumping the 12v signal line.
