View Full Version : Possibly blown KA24DE?

Hey guys, so I picked up a 92 s13 hatch with a rebuilt KA24DE with about 7200 on a fresh rebuild.

Car runs flawlessly except a minor coolant leak on the hose connected to the throttle body. We fixed the leak(thought so atleast)

Well, was on the interstate on my way to work. Car running great, all of a sudden notice a loss in power, first instinct is to look at tempature and sure enough it's over heating. Put it in neutral and go to the emergency lane and it stalls the minute it is out of gear. I allow it to cool down naturally and I insert coolant into radiator and try to start it. The belts and pulleys spin, but it sounds like absolutely no compression. Grabbed my compression check and checked compression in #3 and it read 0

Pretty much all I hear is a starter spinning and no sound of the motor compressing. Will do a more thorough compression check when it is home.

Could use some feedback guys

How much coolant did you have to add to the radiator? Don't say "a little" or "not much". Please try to quantify it....

A friend had a timing chain snap- with NO sound or rattle. It just went.

Did you check your oil level? Any contamination?

you can wait more then 1hr and 15 min for people to get back to you

Give us some feedback on the other 3 cylinders. Jeez.
Have you bothered to look at your coolant and/or oil to see if it's mixed w/ the other?

You give us the run down of what happened but did you bother to check the basics first before starting this thread?

I wasn't rushing. Was just adding that I'm looking for feedback. I couldn't do a check on the other 3 because the spark plug boots seperated from the plastic and was lodged in the sockets. The oil was darker than normal but not milky in anyway. The radiator was dry. But with the engine not making any sounds of combustion I didn't finish filling it up. So I'm assuming the radiator was empty. (The heat may have evaporated the rest)

Once I tow it home I will be pulling the valve cover off to see if the chain snapped. Or if the valve is stuck open.

Oh and to add to all of that. The pulleys are all still spinning, it seems to me that the engine isn't seized up, just isn't compressing. Any advice on other things I could check to see why there isn't any compression in that cylinder? If it were just a head gasket wouldn't I be seeing some sort of compression? Maybe a low 15 psi or less?

0 comp sounds like it's done
My piston with a brutal hole in the ring lands read 0, cyl 3 had the same thing but not quite as bad and I got 50psi (you can see said motor in my build thread)
Valve issues?
Unless it's something retarded like the chain broke but I have never seen that, not saying it can't happen but I've never seen it.

If I saw 0 comp I'd pull the motor out. Or if you wanna pull the head if a borescope is not available.

Once I get it home I'll be able to update what the valve and chain situation is in. I'll keep you guys updated

I'm about to say screw it and just buy an rb25det. #madskidz

freshly rebuild with 7500 miles... sounds about right

You can see if the piston is moving up and down with a light too

Ok so I got it home, and pulled the plugs but the end of the wire boots melted to the socket. So I spent an hour and a half digging it out of cylinder 2. Ran a compression test and got 0 on #2. To save myself the trouble of getting #1 and #4 out I think it's safe to say they will read 0, and I'll pull the heads. The valves seem ok. I watched them all compress and depress with the cams moving. So maybe just a blown head gasket. I'll see once the heads are off

I'm going 80-20, 80% chance the skirts are blown out

Sell the Ka to some hoonibro. DONT GET THE RB. It already gets enough bad rep from people that blown it up without doing any research. Get a 1j/2j.

Get a 1j/2j.

More cylinders equal more problems. Can you imagine the OP w/ more cylinder problems? I mean shit, he started this useless thread for some "ideas" after he already knew that he had 0 compression in cylinder #3. It's not rocket science to just go ahead and check at least 1 more cylinder for compression to satisfy my taste.

When I first saw this thread posted I thought to myself "boy, you would have to do something REALLY STUPID to blow up a KA". As it turns out I was right. I don't even get the point of the thread. I mean, if you KNOW you have 0 compression what possible advice could you expect from us? There is no miracle solution to 0 compression. Tear the engine apart and see what you screwed up with your ignorance.

Dropping an RB in is a GREAT idea, I say go for it. Then we could start a pool for how long it will take you to overheat the crap out of it and cook that one too. Since RB's in S-chasis are notorious for cooling issues, it shouldn't take long.

Also, delete your coolant temp gauge for weight savings. It seems you never bother to look at it anyways!

You know how much boost you can run with zero compression?
Not enough![emoji24]

. Did you see the temps rise? Did you have water radiator fluid in the car? You could've turned the heat all the way to high. And prevented head gasket failure

my experience with KA's is once they over heat, its a warped cylinder head maybe more especially if its losing power and dieing after overheating

The excessive heat could also cause the rings to expand and if there wasnt enough end gap on the rings this could force them outwars into the cylinder walls causing some cylinder and ring damage

how far up did the temp gauge go? regardless the cylinder heads gotta come off at the least if you have no compression

pretty much what everybody has already said just giving a +1
