I already have access to a Miller Millermatic 200 MIG welder and I'm doing my shopping list to get it equipped with proper gauge wire for autobody welding.

In the meantime, anyone else here started learning how to weld to fix up their car? Any tips for sheet metal welding? How did it turn out fo you? My 1st goal is to fix some floor panel and seam rust:

Self-taught amateur TIG welder here, going on around 6 years now using a Lincoln TIG 225 amp. Not using it for chassis welding, just general fab work. My advice is to watch channels like Welding Tips and Tricks on Youtube, Jody is a beast welder and his videos are top notch. Also watching Pete who makes videos for DIY Auto School, more humorous but still informative.

Just got all the parts needed to start wedling sheet metal. Got 10lbs of 0.23 wire (waaaay too much lol), 0.23 roller driver and 0.23 contact tips. The problem is that I now need to make sense of those charts.

This is one old dinosaur that I'm not sure how it all works. I think someone tinkered with the 'Voltage range' with 'HIGH' and 'LOW' and possibly hard wired it to HIGH as it seem I'm missing some parts. I'll be needing the low range.

I use that same welder. when im doing sheet metal, I've got the voltage at 4, and the wire speed between 35 and 40, depends on the metal. That would be a good start for you. If you've never welded before, just take you time and be patient. Work in small areas so you don't warp the metal, giving it ample time to cool. Spread the welds around the panel, welding no more than an inch at a time in different places around until you weld it up completely.

Thanks!
