Just what the topic asks: What would be cheaper to do to an 89-90 S13
1. Swap in a KA24DE motor and turbo it
:::OR:::
2. Swap in a SR20DET
Remember, Im asking whats cheaper, not what you like more.

I think in the end, both will = around the same
ka24de cost 300-500 bucks + 1500-2000 dollar turbo kit + tuning.
s13 sr20det front clip 1800 (you'll get a low mileage motor that's built for turbo)

iono about a front clip for 1800 from a legit importer. if u have a low mileage ka turbo it, no replacement for displacement and dont say turbo is a replacement cuz in this case it would b e turbo on both cars. DIY kat will cost you around 1000. T3 from the yard starion IC for like 100 bucks 370 injectors modified manifold or aftermarket manifold of your choice. fuel management etc. if u took sr t25 sr injectors and ran them on a ka you would make more torque and hp.

from what i've read, kat is much cheaper if you do it yourself. 1.5kish? if you run out and buy a turbo kit and hire someone to install it then it gets pricey. 3-4k+
kat is much cheaper if u can do it yourself.

Ok so lets say I find a good s13 body for cheap (since its hard to find an "in good shape" body and motor together) Would it be cheaper to swap in a KA and turbo, or swap in a SR?
And another question. How much do shops usually charge to do a SR swap? I know one shope quoted me $1750, and I thought that was crazy expensive.

y is it that my sr project is costing me like so far at least 5 grand, * throws the spoon at rickey from race up in miami, thus throwing him from his skateboard into a ditch, while falling on a metal grate, tears a piece of brain out, while unable to afford losing any more brain he tries to stuff it back in but attempts fail*

KA-T is always gonna be cheaper if u wanna do it right IMO. Ive found low mileage KADE's for sub $300 w manual trans. new T3 turbo, 600.. add ARP stuffs, forged pistons, intercoolor, and custom piping, fuel computer, manifold.
I was quoted $3000 to have about a 350rWHP reliable KA-T, although using a different turbo. With this ull have a nice front mount IC, fresh turbo, strong motor = KA. With SR, to get 350 at the wheels ull have to spend a bunch more. Like those V8 guys say, no replacent for displacement.

1800 for a clip is kinda on the low side, most sell it for 2k-2.5k and maybe even more
depends if you're doing it yourself, (labor rates varies widely)
kat would be cheaper if you're doing things yourself IMO

I think in the end, both will = around the same
I beleive this also.
That is if you are truly building the motor. not just bolting on a turbo kit.
Also its a lot easier to find KA blocks.

Do what i did, rebuild your SOHC bottom end with forged pistons, run 15psi and enjoy 12's ;)
It'll cost your a couple thousand less than your 2 posted options and yield higher power for the money spent.
Im running an almost completely stock KAE with low comp forged pistons and a cam. I pulled a 12.9 at 13psi on 205 all season tires and pump gas.

Any recommendations as to where I should get these pistons from? Im thinking I can hopefully find a 89-90 S13 for under $2k with a good body and decent mile motor. Then I know a guy who sells sohc turbo kits for $1500. He runs this kit and hits high 12's at somthing like 14psi.
What does your turbo kit consist of?
