Im not one to spend money making my car go faster, but i wanna know- decides the sound effects, will one of those $50 ebay intakes make any real increase in performance to my car? Im planning to install it with my header and exhaust in the spring

Yes, even the $ 8.95 intake will make a diff.

do you mean the intake piping? or the cone filter?

they will, but be sure you buy a 3inch intake tube. Most of them are only 2.5 inch, and won't give you much.

If you just want noise and the perception of speed, drill out the stock airbox. Makes your car sound burly. Who knows, it might increase flow... I bought the car like that.

Strut bars are easy to get right. Granted, they are easy to fuck up as well. . . I personally don't see the sense in spending hundreds on some name brand strut bar. Intakes are really the same thing. It's a pipe. Replacing the intake honestly won't do much for you. It will sound burlier which is nice, but the factory airbox isn't restrictive enough to cause an "OMG WTF I'M FAST NOW" difference :P Might open up the top a bit, but don't expect much.

Don't forget the importance of keeping the incoming air clean, I found this to be pretty informative:

who needs a intake, just convert to an ITB set up =x

right, because ITBs are EXACTLY what he was looking for when he asked about ebay intakes . . .

The biggest difference between an eBay special and a name-brand intake is in the quality of the hose connectors and the air filter.

Replace the air filter with a name-brand one and it's not a bad deal, really. The way to tell if it's 3" - if they show you an actual picture of the intake you're getting, the connector hoses should look like reducers (stepped up/down to meet the 2.5" throttle body opening and MAF opening).

Isnt the biggest difference with name brands is that the name brands tend to have Carb E.O. #'s with them? AEM, Injen, whatever else.

that # only matters if your in Cali, Im too lazy to scroll down and check to see if your in Cali or not.

the eBay filters and real K&N Filter Cones are way different.. the KN cleans better (gets dirty fast) where as the generic ones stay pretty clean ( whats in your engine? )..

but besides that the piping is pretty much the same..

my friend bought one of those intakes and it sucked. after a little we took the filter off the pipe and found dirt inside the piping. jus change the filter.

I would go with an ebay intake that only comes with the piping and tack on a K&N or other filter of your choice. In fact, I'm going to be doing that in the next week or so.
