well, heres a quick version of my story... recently my SR started making a wierd nois during boost sounded like a deeper boost sound... well the first thing that came to mind was blade rubbing aginst the housing... some turbo guy told me i could drive it until i can get it fixed and it would be ok... as the days progressed it strated getting worst to the point where my car sounded like a harley and wouldnt hold idle...so i brought it to a local shop, blacktrax (very reputable shop here in sanjose/milpitas area)...Aki, the guy in charged, couldnt figure it out.. he said my turbo was probably going bad...so i asked him how much to change out the turbo and swap in abother t25 and he quoted me $400 for labor if i get the gasets and stuff.. . :eek3: i thought that if i did it i wouldnt have to bother with it... well i went the different route, borrowed some tools, and tackled it myself today...he told me it would take a whole day to do, including taking off turbo, manifold and rebolting everything back on... it took me an hour to pull the mani and turbo completely from my car... i find that 3 out of the 4 turbo to mani bolts were gone, 1 of my studs from the head to the exhaust mani were gone, and only 2 bolts were holding my extension for the exhaust side... i was like WTF... so i picked up all the gaskets i needed along with the necessary bolts. and it took me an hour to bolt everything backup...flushed my coolant system, then started my baby up and she started with NO problem... and to to it all of i hold a steady 10 psi all day without any spiking of any sort... just a solid 10 psi on my boost gauge...happy day for me.. ok time to end the story....

recap:

1.car going crazy
2.fixed car myself
3. prooved shop wrong
4.saved $350
5.didnt waste my day.
6. car boost way better than before (thats cuz when i pulled the turbo to mani gasket off it was completely dsintegrated.)

Moral: check you exhaust bolts and nuts, and take the time to find out yourself before you pay someone else to do what you could have done yourself..
blah blah blah..

Always a pleasure to outsmart a shop and save tons of money while you're at it. Glad you got your problem solved.

Feels so much better to do stuff yourself.

Glad everything went well. Also it is a good feeling to do things to your car own your own, because you know exactly what is going on with the car.

i used lock nuts with lock washers with loctite and the stock locking shims.... that badboy isnt going nowhere...while i was doing it all i had in mind was making sure that its not gonna happen again... that sucker is coming off worth sh*t.. or at least i hope it doesnt...=)
as for the shop im not trying to rag on them... the owner is very very very reputable and knows his stuff... but this just proves to show that even the best of shops wont give you accurate info... sometimes its best to discover it yourself.. :coolugh: good day to zilvia.
