S13 SR vs. S14 SR

My transmission, and now (to a much lesser degree) my engine, are being such trouble that I'm now just planning to get an SR (as soon as finances permit, of course). I'm having a little trouble figuring out whether to get an S13 motor or to spend the extra for one from an S14. It seems to me that the S14 engines are pretty uncommon, even in S14s. Is there any reason for this? Is the extra power too minor to notice, or maybe is it cheaper to get the additional power out of an S13 engine?

Since you're low on cash, might as well go with a s13 sr.. they are cheaper to begin with.

about 85% of the stuff from a s13 SR will work on the S14 SR...

Sounds more like someone is trying to justify being cheap and putting a S13 motor in a S14. :down:

S14SR's are not that much more complicated to wire. If you are looking for a torquey street engine than you will be much happier with a S14sr IMHO . S13sr's while having a high port head and more top end capability are sorely lacking in the bottom end torque department. i.e. nothing below 3-3500 rpm. In fact its dog slow. I know I have driven many. Yes once you wrap it up its goes loads of fun power but if you want something that pulls off idle and has a smooth powerband than you want the s14sr . If you like motorcyle like powerbands run a s13sr.

They both do the job well. imho It' better to buy the engine that came in the chassis eg. s14-->s14sr or s13-->s13sr or buying an upgraded engine: s13-->s14sr or s13 or s14-->s15sr. Why put an older engine in a newer car if you don't have to? Of course reality kicks in then the budget restraints apply. Whatever you do don't take any shortcuts. They will cost you more in the long run. Good luck!

depends on budget
i just picked up my s14 sr for a pretty penny but WAY less then the 'going rate' for my front clip. it was no reason not to. a kouki s13 blacktop was near the same cost as my s14 kouki clip

i have driven both motors
i like the s14 more, but that's just me.

imo it depends on yoru overall plans. and your budget.

also dont expect to pay JUST for the motor and slap it in. i spent lots of money over the previous 3 to 4 months buying parts for the motor so when it goes in..its definately more reliable and ready to rock at thet rack w/ NO WORRIES.

changed pretty much all the gaskets, new radiator, some turbo small stuff, gauges and a few other stuff here and there (poly motormounts--homedone for 10 bucks) tranny mount, intercooler upgrade and so forth and so forth.

so dont expct to just slap the motor in, it IS used, remember! you DONT KNOW its previous history.

Of course I don't expect to just drop the engine in. But I'd assume that the installation for both engines should be about the same, maybe even less for a 14 motor, due to the fact that it'd be newer.

do it yourself. its not that hard. just takes some time patience and trouble shooting. you can rent a engine lift thingif you need or buy one..its pretty cheap.

you'll save a good 1K or more

age of the motro has nothing to do w/ the installation cost. both swap into eachothers chassis the exact same way. just wiring is different.

newer or older either will need some new basic maintenace, fluids, plugs wiring and other misc stuff adds up FAST

if you go s14, set aside a good 5k for whatever (motor included)
for s13, need about 3-4k depending on what you buy (clip or motorset)

this is my opinion though. do it right ONE TIME.

I don't have a shop to work in, owing to living in the hills. So I kinda have to have someone do it. The guy I was talking to (whose shop was highly recommended to me by several people) was quoting 1500 for a 13 motor, and about 2 for an S14 motor, you think the install would come out to 3k more?
