View Full Version : KEL's S14.5 Fueled Racing LS1 build (weekly update)

my name is kelvin. i've been on and off with 240sx for over ten years. went through couple of KA SR s13 s14. finally i found a complete s15 swapped s14.5 couple years ago. now here I'm dropping a LS1 into it and making a build thread for it mainly to document my work. I'm not a pro but i do have 2 years of mechanic back ground and I'm a big time self learner. therefore, this thread is open for opinion and ideas.

what:
2001 camaro SS LS1 with T56 swap into 1995 240sx

which:
complete Fueled Racing kit and wiring specialties harness.

why:
hm… this can go on and on. but one of the biggest reason is i want some easy reliable power as this is my drift only car. gotta cheat a little bit on the power...

when:
I'm off two days a week. and thats the time i would put my hands on it. ideally should be complete by the end of the year.

who:
myself. my lovely wife will be my photographer and assistant, mainly taking pictures while I'm holding some dirty 50lbs parts.

where:
in my backyard. i set it up that way so i can still park my other cars in the garage at the time being.

how:
hm… i'll show u how below…

before we start, here's couple pictures of it on the last drift event

week # 1

ok here we go. i'm gonna start from checking out a full swap i found on craigslist. it wasn't easy to get to this cus now adays people are asking for way too much for a decent LS1 drop out. i seen as high as $6k for a 22k miles drop out with t56. anyways, i found this on a quater panel damaged 2001 camaro SS with T56. owner decide to just part it out. the damage on the car wasnt even that bad but who cares cus i got what i want. it has 92k on the clock and what perfect was, not only its a complete drop out, i also got a chance to go test drive it before they start pulling it out for me to pick up.

bought my mini husky with me on the 2 hours road trip

week # 2

i went pick up the swap the next week. people said LS1 is light weight aluminum but all the accessories bolted up and the t56, its pretty damn heavy.

week #3

this week i started to remove all the acessories, remove and label the wiring harness and have a better understanding on where all the sensors go.

i'm also shooting videos for this project. i'l put together a video of all footage once the project completed.

week # 4

nothing much going on this week but i actually did a lot. since this project is gonna take couple months. i have to clear out a space at the backyard for this project so i can see have my garage to park my other cars. i spent two days to just clean up the backyard. trashed a lot of spare parts and recycled about 1 ton worth of metal.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

week # 5

didnt do much this week as i went to a short trip with my wife. but i still manage to come back and did some cleaning on the T56. i just hate working on dirty cars that gets both my hands and tools dirty.

pretty dirty

the input shaft seal was leaking thats y it looks nasty inside. already ordered new OEM slave, input shaft seal, LS7 clutch and light weight flywheel from tick performance.

week # 6

here is where this thread starting to get excited. i moved all my tool box and air compressor to the back, placed it on jack stand and started to take it apart.

before i started, it was kinda weird to work on the project without music. its just doesnt seems right!! so i went straight to best buy and bought this before we start...

Looking good so far! That's actually a nicely done 15 conversion for once. What are you doing with the s15 motorset?

I will Definitely be tuning in for this one!

Glad to see more LS1 builds going on.

Can you chime in on why you chose fueled racings kit over SIKKY or anyone elses?

thanks man. the motor set will be clean up and up for sale once the swap is done and settle. for now it just sit on the side and look good.

i was about to go for the sikky kit before i found fueled racing. I'm sure both are GOOD quality parts, i want the BEST however. when i do a deeper research, here's what i found.

1. Fueled racing kit sits lower and further back, closer to the fire wall.
better weight balance on the whole set up.

2. no tranny tunnel hammer require if any.
my opinion, if the kit require hammer to create extra space, the kit wasn't engineer right. and i see i lot of people have to pull the swap out multiple times to re hammer the tunnel which i wanna avoid.

3. better ground clearance.
everyone will want this. a lot of people damaged their manifold for going too low, which is very common on 240sx. mine's will see some track drifting time, maximum clearance is need. (they always just came out with a better clamp on the exhaust than the older v band. even more clearance for the area connecting from header to y pipe.)

4. works with front factory sway bar.
again, if a different sway is needed, the kit wasn't done right.

5. excellent reviews
i spent a lot of time researching on both kits. both have great reviews and they are all happy customers. however, 95% of them did not tried both kits. i found 2 people that actually used both. both said fueled racing has better quality kit overall in fitment and engineering.

6. tech support.
Todd is extremely helpful to answer all of my annoying questions. he always pick up his phone and reply my email (even its 11pm) and spends his time to explain everything make sure u completely understand. very professional.

there could be more. i haven't install the kit yet but I'm already happy with it so far. I'm confident on their product.

yes, i'm dropping the engine from the bottom. i did quite a lot of research on this. this way i dont have to climb up and down lifting the engine sky high and at the same time hitting and scratch up the engine bay. only down side is needing to redo alignment after, which is not a big deal and im putting new suspension on it anyways.

https://i.imgur.com/c1RoHurl.jpg

i let the engine and tranny sit on two chart then lift up the front end.
https://i.imgur.com/3XVfsFFl.jpg

its THAT easy. i pulled couple of 240sx engine before and finally found a MUCH easier way to that it out.

Thank you for the response this was very insightful.

I mostly see people with SIkky kits and when I see you mentioned fueled racing I wanted to understand your thought process.

Keep up the progress!

Im excited to see your experience with Fueled. I like that Sikky offers essentially everything needed, but I'll be honest... I haven't researched fueled's kit very much

I'm running the Fueled kit with my S14 and just a heads up if you plan on getting really low your going to run into some issues like I did and I wasn't really that low.

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t148/j_mcgill/IMG_0865_zps32bc51f0.jpg (http://s159.photobucket.com/user/j_mcgill/media/IMG_0865_zps32bc51f0.jpg.html)

I plan on pulling the engine and trans to hammer the tunnel, then add shims to bring them up a little higher. If these doesn't work long term goal may be to ditch the longtubes and go turbo with full oval.

Other than that I've had no issues with my Fueled kit and Todd is by far one of the nicest people to deal with. 100% best customer service!

i think i saw your post while i was doing my deep research lol. but yea i m aware of that. it seems to be a common issue on all ls swap kits but i think it has a lot to do with ride hide, which i m not planning to slam the car. thanks for the heads up tho. i'll see how it goes on my set up and keep u guys posted.

week 8

time for some update. this week i did more cleaning on the t56, install input shaft seal, install slave cylinder and ls7 clutch so i can do some measurement, strip the interior and got crazy with the wiring. enough said, i'll let the pictures begin...
https://i.imgur.com/mrPikaql.jpg

front cover of t56 removed to replace input shaft seal. more cleaning...
https://i.imgur.com/LjfY7d2l.jpg

new seal in
https://i.imgur.com/ab54GjMl.jpg

the t56 looks extremely clean to me inside. looks like it has been cleaned or rebuilt. gear looks fine as well. I'm happy with the condition.
https://i.imgur.com/Cjg1yqEl.jpg

get ready to go back in.
https://i.imgur.com/BB2lwFdl.jpg

new OEM slave in.
https://i.imgur.com/hSVJlJZl.jpg

now to the LS1
https://i.imgur.com/4cHiLMsl.jpg

the pilot bearing took away some of my time. broke my cheap tool so i ending up borrowing it from auto zone.
https://i.imgur.com/HJI7EHMl.jpg

there's a lot of ghetto way to remove this thing like pushing grease or even bread into the hole and hammer it. i rather do it the right way and don't wanna take the risk of damaging the crank.
https://i.imgur.com/GdyNvmal.jpg

took a lot of effort to make this thing move a bit. but once u get it to move a bit, it will come out pretty quickly.
https://i.imgur.com/ATnxZFxl.jpg

see the big difference? i wonder if it has ever been changed at all.
https://i.imgur.com/R5KoPVVl.jpg

new bushing in.
https://i.imgur.com/NfkZHs2l.jpg

bolt up my light weight flywheel and ls7 clutch comes right after it.
https://i.imgur.com/57WoHhWl.jpg

next step is the measure the gap between the release bearing and the clutch pressure plate finger. a lot of people skipping this important step and have the engaging point too low. some LS will know what I'm talking about.
https://i.imgur.com/XSkjH3ul.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/Ny5sP48l.jpg

the measurement is right on the edge so i ordered a 0.113 shim from tick performance just to be safe.
https://i.imgur.com/Ft1R3Ekl.jpg

next day i started tearing down the stupid roll cage i bought for temporary use since i can't find a cusco in stock and a cage to drift in tandem.
https://i.imgur.com/dxeA8Sgl.jpg

this thing is NOT going back in. I'm kinda embarrassing to have this part in my car. not that its doesn't do its job, but I'm just stubborn, i do like using off brand parts cus i believe in quality.
https://i.imgur.com/1xqDfSZl.jpg

the preious owner spent some money on sound system. i enjoy listening to the engine all day. those 10 pounds of amp wires are coming out.
https://i.imgur.com/KhyUxQjl.jpg

moving forward to the dash.
https://i.imgur.com/uutKVYSl.jpg

theres no way NOT to break this piece when removing the dash and i expected that. it was so crispy and dry up after 20 years.
https://i.imgur.com/fabGdgAl.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/PntiiF9l.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/8Zk3G6Rl.jpg

also removing the three air boxes under the dash makes my life much easier to trace down the wiring.
https://i.imgur.com/3mARLIel.jpg

i thought i would never mess with wiring on a car in my life cus they are so complicated. but here i'm. i don't wanna disconnect or cut something up that i don't no. so before I'm comfortable pulling it out, i went online, pull all the pinout and matches all the color, understanding how things were hooked up on the pre owner and label everything.
https://i.imgur.com/VVPCZOul.jpg

the s15 harness finally came out. even tho i won't be using it anymore, i want the next owner have a better clue when reinstalling into another car.
https://i.imgur.com/omRNnbql.jpg

i ending up pulling out 10-15 pounds of useless wiring out from sound system, turbo timer, boost controller, alarm system etc. now i have a much better idea of how the wiring goes. getting ready ti order my harness from yury.
https://i.imgur.com/zcAQ2tMl.jpg

also did some more stripping in the engine bay. removed all hard lines, brake booster, clutch system out. now its almost completely gutted except the wiper motor which I'm still figuring out how to take it out, also the steering shaft is hanging around.
https://i.imgur.com/IsfRnpEl.jpg

for the last picture of this update, i gotta share some info with u guys my MGW short shifter. got the best review on the F body T56 people. the down side is, they only make two threads for the shifter, 16mm oem or 12x1.75. it limited my shift knob choice to camaro or mustang knob. i tried to find a knob that i like but man, none of them really flow with the japanese interior. long story short, i got it special order to 12x1.5 pitch so i can re use my STI shift knob. (i know the reverse is in a different place now but who cares) i might be switching to OEM s15 knob later on.
https://i.imgur.com/YJGWxgvl.jpg

thats it for this week so far. i will be preparing the engine for tubing with some trailer fender, which is another big chapter for me other than messing with wiring. i already have my eyes on a nice welding machine. also will be dropping the oil pan and starting to bolt up some fueled racing goodies for test fit. stay tuned....

One recommendation bud....add some heat barrier material to that fire wall and trans tunnel. These puppies run hot and it can be felt through the chassis. I am adding some Dynamat material to the inside (behind dash and under carpet), wrapping headers, and will be adding the ThermaCool barrier/reflective material to the fire wall (engine side) when i can. I also added a low temp thermo (160*) cause I saw temps slowly creeping in dead stop TX traffic and hot weather.

Keep up the good work I love what your doing.

What's your cooling setup? I run a 180 in texas with the ac on and the temp stays constant. You shouldnt be have any temp creep if all your plumbing and fans are set up right

Sr20d3t, are you rebuilding the motor? Either way replace those knock sensors and seal it up while your there. They tend to get water and go bad. Oil and power steering coolers are a must as well

@Zeitgeist....plumbing looks fine and setup looks to be right on. Mishimoto dual pass rad, new water pump, stock thermo, 2 2"fans with no shroud. Water temps typically run 200-210 which is normal for an LS but have creeped to 215 which I don't like. I have Altima fans and the 160* thermo going in this weekend hopefully. Mind sharing your setup?

OP hope some of this info helps.

thanks all for the kind word. im doing my best to keep up the build and this post. nothing much to post for the past week cus I went to vegas for a short break last week. but I did finalized my order with WS on my harness. sent out PCM, bought some expensive tools and trailer fenders. two days off tmr and i'll get my hands on it. will have some update shortly :naughty:

no I m not rebuilding the motor for now as my goal is to make it run first. the current plan already maxing out my skill level that my research is having a hard time to catch up. once this thing starts running reliably, upgrade will follow. but yea, cooling is a big thing for this project as it will see some track drifting and my s15 front end just doesn't like to let air goes in especially sideway. will start with mishimoto radiator and dual fans. adding cooler will be right after. thanks for the heads up.

Coolant resevoir with top hose from radiator and bottom from the thermostat housing.
Dont have a surge tank, one couldnt hurt though
I do recommend trying to bleed it some more. The one time i did have temps in the 200s it was due to this.
LSX is a complete PITA to bleed especially with the cooling system having more going on than what i was used to with the ka24e. Especially since you said you have a new water pump, one more try wouldnt hurt.
Oh and how much power are you putting down? If youre putting down 500 or more, disregard everything i said haha

week # 9

alright its been longer than a week i know. cus i went to vegas last week for a short trip but i didn't forgot about my build. i did tackle down couple parts and tools on my list so they will arrive on my next day off. i planned to do more this week but its getting dark really early due to time adjust. regardless, this project is moving forward to the right direction.

i finalized my order with wiring specialties. sending out my PCM for them to remove security, emission disable and reflash.
https://i.imgur.com/wffbrARl.jpg

picked up some expensive tool.

this is the real start of week 9. pulling off factory oil pan for fueled racing supply moroso pan.

went into a small issue. the oil pan has quite a lot of milky water oil mixture. sure enough, water went into engine from the valley cover while i was washing the engine like zeitgeist said.
https://i.imgur.com/lKTGlt0l.jpg

took off valley cover
https://i.imgur.com/5JbuT5Rl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%209/IMG_2291.jpg.html)

the caps on top also didn't help at all and my shock sensors were flooded with water. these two seals didn't help either thats why i got some milky water in the pan.
https://i.imgur.com/UeNDVG6l.jpg

No problem! one of the benefit of having Ls1 is availability on parts. instead of getting stuck on my plan, went straight to chevy dealer to pick up a 2016 vett.
https://i.imgur.com/A61se7Tl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%209/IMG_4418.jpg.html)

nah i still love my 14.5.
i need to get the plug to cap off the factory dip stick hole anyways and i picked up some valley cover gasket and seals. the intake manifold gasket i ending up returning it cus $100 bucks for that is just too much. i can get that somewhere and i don't need it until later on the build.
https://i.imgur.com/Q0xT2R5l.jpg

ok back to work. some clean up before pulling the new pan. i really like the design of the pan. it comes with studs and nuts instead of bolts. i heard people having fitment issue with sikky pans which comes with bolts.
https://i.imgur.com/lwKvLp6l.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%209/IMG_4421.jpg.html)

fits right on it.
https://i.imgur.com/sz0BECJl.jpg

everything bolts up. engine mount on and subframe on.
https://i.imgur.com/GL4NOjAl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%209/IMG_2305.jpg.html)

back to the T56. the shim from tick performance arrived couple days ago. put that on…
https://i.imgur.com/Wk8h9x4l.jpg

cutting off the ear. don't really know what was that originally for. it has no functionality but taking up space….
https://i.imgur.com/muStNrUl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%209/IMG_2319.jpg.html)

grind it down and smooth out the edges.
https://i.imgur.com/8WmgkPnl.jpg

installing the fueled racing supply clutch line and remove bleed. it was a big time PITA to take this damn rolling pin off for some reason. (yes i did take the O ring out.)
https://i.imgur.com/pnGieeNl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%209/IMG_4463.jpg.html)

after the long separate. they are finally back together.
https://i.imgur.com/Ox3Ohsgl.jpg

next day i went to spend some money again on tools and pick this up.
https://i.imgur.com/IpAk9Hnl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%209/IMG_4476.jpg.html)

i m completely new to welding so i've spent close to $2k to just get this set up. its a brand new Lincoln 180 dual 110 and 220 walt MIG welder. cus i know i will be welding more in the future project. this welding will give me a lot of room to grow in skills.
https://i.imgur.com/aixG69el.jpg

when u see a welding machine and these on a 240sx build, u know whats gonna happen next….
https://i.imgur.com/2XRq19ql.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%209/IMG_2345.jpg.html)

here's how the swap sits now. ls1 t56 back together which it went thought quite a lot of new parts inside. as it sit, new valley cover gasket and seals, oil pan, dip stick cap, engine mount, pilot bushing, light weight flywheel, new flywheel bolts and Ls7 clutch, input shaft seal and of course my anal cleaning on every parts.

i was gonna start cutting the fender well but it gets dark so damn early now. that will be next week mission. so thats it for this week.
keep the comments and ideas coming!!
thanks for watching.

For the holes around, the sensor, did you add some rtv? It was actually put out by GM to dam the holes with rtv after replacing the sensors. Forgot to mention it
Check the wires for corrosion as well

yes i did. one of them had rtv on it i assume it had been worked on before. it has water in both regardless so i cleaned up and rtv both. wires seems fine. will see how it goes... thanks for the reminder.

Nice build, good work and I applaud you for tackling things that are new to you,e.g the welding and wiring. I am currently doing my front tubs on my s13 and I'm using 1 trailer fender cut in half for both sides. Why are you using two trailer fenders? Are you possibly doing rear tubs? Or did you get an extra one just to experiment? I have to do my wiring now and I hate just thinking about it lol

thanks man. this project is also a learning process for me. im only gonna tub the front and yea it can be done by using just one. i always give myself a lot of margin of error. just in case. especially im brand new to welding. for wiring, i feel ya. especially mines already pre swapped vehicle. its research on top of research. it just takes time googling, emailing the expert and some basic understand of sensors. good luck on your project as well.

week # 10

week 10 here we come. although i have two days to work on it, feels like i didn't do much. fabricating from scratch just takes a lot of times especially i m anal. but I'm getting there. lets get started.

the cutting started. say good bye for the ugly rusty battery tray.
https://i.imgur.com/bI5cIcUl.jpg

i ending up cutting all on the side as well.
https://i.imgur.com/buRO75rl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2010/IMG_2485.jpg.html)

more cutting on the other side.
https://i.imgur.com/CB7BO6Ol.jpg

after some measuring, cutting some cut board to get idea.
https://i.imgur.com/rD7wRXgl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2010/IMG_2489.jpg.html)

something like that.
https://i.imgur.com/Jzj2JLsl.jpg

cutting the trailer fender for test fit.
https://i.imgur.com/TFSmnYLl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2010/IMG_2519.jpg.html)

like this.
https://i.imgur.com/VT5y63dl.jpg

after i got some idea, i went to the local metal shop and got some metal cut. was gonna get 16 ga to match with the trailer fender but they ran out of it. didn't wanna ruin my plan of the day so i ending up getting 14 ga, just one step thicker, which it worked out great cus its a little stronger and not as easy to bend.
https://i.imgur.com/diSvq0Rl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2010/IMG_2534.jpg.html)

start with the first piece. trim to fit.
https://i.imgur.com/qLAqE6xl.jpg

both side trimmed to fit. i just let them sit on it now.
https://i.imgur.com/VT5y63dl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2010/IMG_2549.jpg.html)

i actually f up the first cut of the fender. i didn't leave enough room for the edge. if i keep cutting to create the edge that get close to the side of the strut tower, the fender will be come too short. so i ending up re do it and leave much more room for the edge.

this is the final fitment. the can see there's a sharp edge that extended far enough to the side of the strut tower.
https://i.imgur.com/F47Yu3Il.jpg

thats the failed piece vs the re done piece. its not that bad on the failed piece, i just want it to be perfect. thats the reason why i bought a pair of them.
https://i.imgur.com/k790iiul.jpg

here's a better pic i took the next day with some lights. its actually perfectly wrap around the strut tower with the sharp edge. it just slightly burnt on the tip makes it hard to see.
https://i.imgur.com/noyoyNOl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2010/IMG_4542.jpg.html)

this is how it sits now. once its done, it will be perfect line up horizontally and parallel.
https://i.imgur.com/OBDXceEl.jpg

all the welding gears arrived while i was working on the project. perfect timing. the lincoln welding pack did cost me quite a lot but i gotta say, its totally worth it. even tho i haven't start using them, i can totally feel the quality on their products. heres the auto darkening helmet, gloves, welding jacket and some other goodies. the full set up is ready to go.
https://i.imgur.com/06RRJXkl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2010/IMG_4549.jpg.html)

on the side note, this is how to keep on track of all my expense on this swap, all notes for wiring and receipts. i just pasted $10k mark which is a median number most people estimate. there's $2k was welding tools and supply tho so I'm at about $8k for just LS1 swap expense.
https://i.imgur.com/n27XPtnl.jpg

looking back, look like i didn't do much but i actually did quite a lot. just the pictures won't be impressive. moving forward will be finish tubing the front end with the new welding gears. i might be able to put the swap in for test fit. will see how it goes. again, thanks for watching. I'm getting there….

the fender side cover is just sitting on there waiting to be welded. i couldn't figure out how to get a nice connection on the top but i think I'm just gonna leave it the way it is.
https://i.imgur.com/aV78lOol.jpg

the other side without fender side cover.
https://i.imgur.com/TqU3Ue4l.jpg

this is where I'm at now. its a great achievement for me. there were 5 pieces of sheet metal to fabricate on each side. each piece, i measure, cut, grind and test fit for about 30 times to get to the way i want. the weld is not beautiful at all due to my rookie skills, some burn through still needs to be fixed.:picardfp: seam sealer or bondo will cover them up i think. the good news is, they all line up straight and balance, leave about 6.5 inch toward radiator support. just need to finish the side cover and clean up the weld next so i can move forward and back to the business.:naughty:

thanks giving week coming up, but that won't stop me from working on it. stay tuned and thanks for watching. comments and ideas are welcome!

So I wanted to share a thread link with you that I started regarding the use of Russell Quick Disconnect Fitting...not sure what fittings or kit you would be using but here is the FYI:

I love the build because its all you and you have done everything yourself. I respect that and can't wait to keep watching it grow! One suggestion i have is to use por-15 to paint the inner fenders so they wont rust after the welds are done and its a good base if you decide to paint the bay black. Just a suggestion but keep up the great work.

thanks for the heads up. I haven't got a chance to study the structure of the Fueled Racing fuel kit. once the test fit for the ls1 is done, fuel kit is going in. I'm pretty sure its its the screw on type. if not, I don't feel safe using it either.

thank you for the kind word. i did got lazy last time and sent my sr20 for rebuild but the result just did not meet my expectation. not that it didnt work or the engine blew up, but just a dirty engine bay that they will never help u to clean it up, wiring installation kinda messy, dirty steering wheel. the worse part is, when i wasn't the one building it, i have no clue whats going on when i have issue on a track day. i complete lost boost on my last track day and didn't know where to look at. ending up the pin on the waste gate fell off, 2 out of 5 turbo elbow bolts wasn't tighten at all and i missed the second half of the track day.
not that i wont make mistake, but if im the one building it, it will be much easier for me to figure it out. and i pay attention to details.
and yes, i will for sure paint some under coat underneath the tub. those sheet metal already have a small amount of surface rust cus its raining season... i'll look into the paint u recommend. thanks.

Keep up the good work I love what your doing.

absolute must i'd say, I completely agree.

My turbo LS s13, also in Texas, is beyond HOT inside the car during the summer. I've stripped the interior to lay down Lizard Skin sound and heat barriers.

Nice progress so far! Keep it up

help me out in here. i m doing some research on heat insulation. kinda looking at dynamat kinda type of insulation. my question is, does the heat coming from the tranny being too close to the tunnel? or its from the ls1 being too hot? problem is, most heat insulation is aluminum silver color, my engine bay will be painted factory black, it just doesnt look good to me if i stick some silver insulation with dynamat written all over it. tranny tunnel is fine as it wont be visible.
interior is fine. just gonna take me more time to rip the carpet off and wrap it with the material.
any recommended material btw? most people getting dynamat for sound, not much review for heat.
thanks.

thats it for this week. sucks that its gonna rain again on my next project working day. i m gonna finish painting the bay no matter what. spending too much time on the engine bay without staying in the topic. still debating on the heat insulation. i think im just gonna do the tranny tunnel for now as from research, heat is mostly coming from the tranny being too close to the tunnel costing heat transfer into the cockpit. again, need to speed up the process and stay in topic...

thanks for watching.

nice work

I cant give you much feedback on how dynamat sheet compares to Lizard Skin type products. I'd assume dynamat sheet is more for a sound barrier as opposed to heat.

For heat, it's a combo of things. Yes the Tranny creates heat, but the LS runs about 20-50* HOTTER than the SR in it's normal operating range. 235* is considered acceptable by GM, shoot the 2nd fan doesn't turn on til 235* IIRC. not to mention, long tube headers run right below the floor pan as well.

If you want it manageable, do something about the firewall, floor and trans tunnel. Just from experience in my car, no heat shielding, no sound deadening on floor or firewall, replacement carpet with 1/2" jute padding the car will get hot. Longest stretch of driving in the summer (only 90*) was an hour and I was drenched with sweat.

You have everything stripped already, it would suck to have to pull it all out again later. Just my $.02

Does that gold reflective stuff actually work? If so, that could be put on the firewall, and it'll still look good in there.

Apply heat shielding material of your choosing to everything under the car, between the frame rails, up until the gas tank. Any header wrap your exhaust up to the same point.

The Gold reflective tape from DEI is a great product.

Easy to install and working with in close spaces. It leaves a lot of residue if your trying to remove it.

I was thinking about using the 3m undercoating, did you use the proffesional? Also my tubs are bare metal right now, should I shoot primer down then the undercoating or just the undercoating? I'm thinking primer and undercoating

yea I don't think im gonna go dynamat as those are for sound more than heat. Lizardskin seems too much work. I wanna go with the stick on type instead. i think i'll do tranny tunnel both sides, the floor and the firewall just the interior side for now and see how it goes.

its the spray can 3M undercoating i was using. recommended by the paint supply shop. i'll try to get a picture of it later on. very easy to use. i just wire brushed the surface to clean up any dirt or mud, compressor air to blow it off and finish cleaning it with a wet tower. then just spray it on. i wouldn't use primer on this. coating stays pretty well even on bare metal. excellent product from 3M.

lol thanks man. i worked in a shop for two years but not anymore. got couple of ASE licenses and dropped off. learnt a lot of basic from those two years but most of my knowledge are from self learning. asking questions on zilvia.net and got flame, ls1tech, silviav8forum, google, youtube etc. and of course Todd @ fueled racing and Yuri @ wiring specialties answered most of the swap related questions.

week # 14

the weather has been taking away a lot of my project time here and there. I have to plan out my days real good so I can get the job done for the week, especially painting.

this 03 Z06 shown up at work as a trade in and I got a chance to drive it
https://i.imgur.com/3hife4ml.jpg

I've been dreaming of how my car will feel like after the swap. but the project is just taking forever. its good that I can feel the power of the 405hp LS6 so it motivates me to speed up on my project. this thing pulls!!!
https://i.imgur.com/QisgLYpl.jpg

also couple of the battery relocation parts came in. and I got my redtop optima battery.
https://i.imgur.com/KS2E5u7l.jpg

down to business. final sand down the primer, mask and get ready to paint.
https://i.imgur.com/ySHhLrrl.jpg

cant do much the first day, have to wait till the sun comes up on the second work day after everything dries off.
https://i.imgur.com/SmU9HMKl.jpg

factory black for the engine bay, wanna keep it simple. nothing crazy like green or gold, just not my type.
https://i.imgur.com/ZucVDU0l.jpg

here we go.

https://i.imgur.com/TgwACZAl.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/8R0qo96l.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/7JkogD7l.jpg

i did 3 layer of base coats.
https://i.imgur.com/hCEhhKDl.jpg

now for the clear coat.
https://i.imgur.com/RquBqjml.jpg

cant take picture while shooting the clear cus the clear coat is floating all over the places, but here's after the clear.
https://i.imgur.com/2pLm4gZl.jpg

turns out alright. its just difficult to make it perfect as there's a lot of uneven spot in the bay. or just my skill level isn't there yet. some wet sand and buffing will make it perfect but I'm not gonna do that. i think its good enough.
https://i.imgur.com/WiQf4Cil.jpg

and here is a quick summary of this 2 months almost.
https://i.imgur.com/pZR2U8Nl.jpg

i'll let the paint dry for a week until i do anything on it next week. looking to finish the fuel system, heat insulate the tranny tunnel and wiring work. i also just dropped another $2.5k for some more goodies. I'm excited!

thanks for watching.

week # 15

got some work done this week but ls1 is still not in yet. lets start off from some goodies I mentioned.

finally pulled the trigger on the pbm pro coilovers. I wanted to replace my old tein ss for a while just didn't get a chance. my rear upper arm is rusted preventing me from getting lesser camber than -2, toe arms are off brand from pre owner. its just about time to replace them all together.
https://i.imgur.com/UFcSyfDl.jpg

also the gold reflective heat insulation from Thermal Protection Inc arrived. most people go with DEI but from my research, this is more legit. its not cheap either. but i'll rather go with the best that I can get. here's the link and they show a good comparison.
http://www.thermalprotectioninc.com/Heat_Reflective_Films.html (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2015/IMG_4683.jpg.html)

I wanna finish the fuel system first. I got the long fuel kit from fueled racing to completely replace my fuel line from the fuel pump. even tho Todd told me I don't need to drop the tank or anything, I still dropped my subframe for easier access and I need to do my rear suspension arms anyways.
https://i.imgur.com/i3PykAxl.jpg

I wanna be super careful on this so I marked everything and verified with todd before I take off anything. but the fuel pump already have a small arrow pointing the direction of the fuel goes.
https://i.imgur.com/VwT4wGHl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2015/IMG_4684.jpg.html)

there were four lines here. rear brake, fuel feed, fuel return and fuel venting.
https://i.imgur.com/OHb4Aekl.jpg

factory hard lines out. both feed and return.
https://i.imgur.com/rJy1XYLl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2015/IMG_4693.jpg.html)

wasted some time on cutting the braided lines. hard to get a clean cut and put on the fittings. long story short, went home deport got some right tools and line goes in.
https://i.imgur.com/0te738Pl.jpg

for the new filter location, no one can really give u any advise of where to put it for liability reason. I installed mines next to the frame rail. I might fab a under tray later on to protect it just in case.
https://i.imgur.com/RdbS0eJl.jpg

while going under the car, I got my wife to sand down the booster. ready for some fresh high heat paint.
https://i.imgur.com/ggwWmJbl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2015/IMG_4700.jpg.html)

after couple months of taking part off the car. here comes the first assemble part. new wildwood clutch master from fueled racing.
https://i.imgur.com/mV0xXDql.jpg

brake booster and lines went in. along with wiper motor and factory vin plate.
https://i.imgur.com/gdpcea8l.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2015/IMG_4701.jpg.html)

now back to the motor. taking the t56 out to install clutch line and re check all bolts.
got into the first speed pump when I was trying to install the rack onto the crossmember. the fitment is so tight that the rack is touching the oil pan. I swear I read someone mentioned that before. but long story short, i just need to put everything in the engine bay before i try to align anything. theres no way that i can align the crossmember now. (ignore the cake)
https://i.imgur.com/MiICCdhl.jpg

as usual, here's how it sits, waiting for the new heart...
https://i.imgur.com/AsmK8ksl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2015/IMG_3702.jpg.html)

looks like weather is gonna take away one of my project day again this week. but for sure the swap will be in no matter what. just cant do anything until the swap is in. then will come wiring depends if the schedule allow. was hopping to have it fire up in 2015, but i think its gonna be in early 2016.

thanks for watching.

Honestly a fire extinguisher would have not helped one bit. As soon as it caught I got out of the car, went to the front to pop the hood and the interior was already engulfed. The only hope I had in this instance was a plumbed fire supression system. Fuel fires are the worst.

this build thread is getting longer and longer as there are some good suggestions from many people. the start up day is just keep pushing back in a good way cus the build will be more solid and problem free. christmas week was wet and cold. i still spent 2 days working on it. knock down some task, ran into some more speed bump.

installed clutch lines, double check all bolts, tranny back together.
https://i.imgur.com/zJDSD3Fl.jpg

MGW shifter installed. i don't see i have much room after the swap is in if i don't do this now.

not pretty but got the job done.
https://i.imgur.com/VIgDSogl.jpg

i think the heat most people get are from the header on both side not the tranny getting too close to tunnel as the header will seat right under the panel without heat shield from factory. but we'll see.

the swap quickly goes back in. i leave the crossmember loosen while dropping it in. still fighting for properly aligning the swap. cus there's many ways to adjust it and the fitment is tight.
https://i.imgur.com/DUKcnsrl.jpg

while the ls1 is in the bay just sitting on the crossmember, i spent some time repairing the harness. a common problem for lowered 240sx. get it ready to tuck in the driver side fender.
https://i.imgur.com/YN5QceVl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2016/IMG_3859.jpg.html)

also put on all pbm control arms. all bolts are un tight now as i just ordered SPL eccentric lock out bolts to replace the factory cam bolts.

https://i.imgur.com/uCAYCRrl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2016/IMG_4752.jpg.html)

also spent some time to take off the masking tape i put on almost 4 months ago on the manifold holes. it was PITA as the tape got dried up and came off in pieces. spent like an hour just on cleaning that up.
https://i.imgur.com/DnsLCgBl.jpg

how it sits now after week 16.

not sure how much i can do on the coming week as i only got one day off. also waiting for some small parts to move forward. waiting for packages on come in on christmas days is gonna take forever. got a small shipment shown delivered but never got it. other package just delay and delay. i think i will spend some time to proper adjust my crossmember and the swap. looking to finish up tucking the factory harness and get it ready to wire up. order screw on type fuel fitting. finish relocating the battery in the trunk. i'll just do what i can.

thats it for this week. thanks for watching. merry christmas and happy new year everyone!!

Can you chime in on why you chose fueled racings kit over SIKKY or anyone elses?

i was about to go for the sikky kit before i found fueled racing. I'm sure both are GOOD quality parts, i want the BEST however. when i do a deeper research, here's what i found.

Answer

I have notice that also... but with cheaper dosent always mean the best options. I would like to see a thread where people all chime in about what kit they used to do their swap with.

Fueled

If I remember correctly, the CX Racing kit had all sorts of Oil pan clearance issues.........and not to mention inconsistent header fitment, tranny tunnel clearance issues, etc. By the time you spend all the money and time making the kit fit to ones OCD level, you could have bought a kit that fits properly.

Seemingly so Drew. But sometimes, money saved on the front end (initial buy in to the product) is money wasted on the back end (Now having to make all sorts of adjustments and fabrication choices which costs $$$, and in addition to the time wasted getting to a proper fitment point.......and my time is worth a whole lot of money currently!). This is just in general terms.

Either way, CX may have fixed a majority of issues. But I agree with the OP original assessment on why he went with Fueled Racing.

can't agree with u more. money is one of the factor, time is more important however. either way, you will need to spend some time to make things fit. depends on skill level, equipment, or sometimes it goes on to some damaged used parts costs miss align and have fitment issue. fueled racing did a great job not on R&D, they also answer all of my rookie questions in detail and professionally. tech support is super important to me as I'm building this car as a hobby.
sikky comes very close to fueled racing in my opinion. i wouldn't go anything future than these two companies or unless i can fabricated the whole thing myself from scratch like some people here.

thanks drew. those are the biggest reason i pulled the trigger on fueled racing kit. i will however write a full review after i finish the build and have it on the road.

btw, congrats on bring your SR back to life! i've been watching your thread lately

Thank you! hopefully I will have this beast running right soon.

week # 17

this will be a boring update this week as i only got one day off due to holiday season. but im just gonna keep the build alive. first day of 2016 im working on this thing!

i got my SPL eccentric bolts for rear suspension arms. everything is adjustable now so i dont need the factory camber bolt that will possibly move under stress.
https://i.imgur.com/J3rlsa8l.jpg

as my oil pan is getting too close to the rack, i fabricated some spacer to lift the engine up a little while waiting for fueled racing sending me one during holiday season.
https://i.imgur.com/HUSnHHLl.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/SeGE2ZXl.jpg

spent some time trying to line up the swap. check for clearance everywhere. still couldnt line it up the way i want it, but now its not touch anything, so i'll leave it at that for now.
https://i.imgur.com/VdmpIkWl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2017/IMG_4847.jpg.html)

rear sub frame ready to go back in. all arms are tighten up except all lock nuts. ready for alignment.
https://i.imgur.com/iLZ7X6pl.jpg

cutting an opening for the wiring pass through. will fab a cover for it later.
https://i.imgur.com/2QchAAgl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2017/IMG_4851.jpg.html)

tucked the wire so i will never touch the wheel. still thinking what to do with the hood release cable. some people re route it inside the engine bay, go from the frame rail. havent decide yet.
https://i.imgur.com/rdfV3VYl.jpg

wiring specialties harness dropped in, ready to hooking them up and tuck. now i m thinking to hide the fuse box underneath the tub, where the windshield washer reservoir used to be.
https://i.imgur.com/sPB79Ovl.jpg

thats all i can do in one short day. its a pretty tough week for me as i was hopping some parts to arrive but didnt show up due to wrong address or some other issue. its also hard to get a hold of people during holiday. Todd will still occasionally reply my email, Yury was replying my email almost instantly and im happy with that.

just ordered a lot of parts again. took care of all small little parts like hoses, adapters, gauges, fittings etc. i'm expecting to have this fire up within this month. finger cross.....

happy new year and thanks for watching!

week # 18

pretty efficient this week as i finally got two full working days on it without getting interrupted by rain. lets get down to business...

lets start with some parts that i finally received. spacers from fueled racing i've been waiting for to let the engine sit in a better position. i was expecting a better looking spacer but whatever..
https://i.imgur.com/TPZkipSl.jpg

box of small parts arrived from jegs racing. most importantly, screw on type fuel fittings are here.
https://i.imgur.com/1d3ZN4al.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2018/IMG_4593.jpg.html)

JDM rear bumper also arrived. box was pretty beat up but everything inside is fine.
https://i.imgur.com/aEYvStal.jpg

i start off putting the intake manifold on with new gasket. now it looks more like a ls1 swap.
https://i.imgur.com/V8PAGxTl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2018/IMG_4866.jpg.html)

did some final clean up on the fuel feed and return line before the rear subframe goes back in. I'm happy with how clean it lines up.
https://i.imgur.com/DtnP68Hl.jpg

rear suspension set up done.
https://i.imgur.com/mvg6n9Ql.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2018/IMG_4559.jpg.html)

battery relocation set up.
https://i.imgur.com/1WNov53l.jpg

got the starter installed with heat insulation cus i know it will get close to the header.
https://i.imgur.com/TXgZKHFl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2018/IMG_4893.jpg.html)

test fitting the WS harness. everything goes into where it should.
https://i.imgur.com/jiSTXrrl.jpg

i was trying to test fit the driver side header with the rack connected. don't see how it can fit with the rack in place. quickly removed the steering rack and header in, along with power steering bump and alternator.
https://i.imgur.com/rAajiisl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2018/IMG_4614.jpg.html)

the last picture basically sums it up. power steering lines hooked up, fuel pressure gauge installed and couple other stuff. i do ran into some speed bump again. the plug on the reverse light switch cannot be plug in due to limited room in the tranny tunnel, and the engine still doesn't sits the way that i want it to be. one side of the tranny is sitting a little too close to the tunnel to my liking. I'm thinking to drop it out again to do some small touch up and take care of all those issues that might bite me back later on. i will only work on it for one day this coming week as well so the progress of this build is going to a up hill. i wanna speed it up so bad but sometimes i just gotta be patient if i don't wanna F anything up.

thanks for watching!

week # 19-22

I couldn't keep up the weekly update due to demanding working hours and weather. even tho I still spent at least a day per week on it, it was mostly small little things here and there, dropping the engine out for re aligning and more clearance. there's no point to post those pictures without any progress and I feel bad to pump the thread for nothing. regardless, its getting very close to start up. just need some small little touch up here and there and it should fire up in a week or two.

I was having a hard time getting the driver side fits the way that I want it. header sits very close to the frame rail and almost touches the power steering lines.
https://i.imgur.com/paOTBxol.jpg

reading the fueled racing instruction. it will be great if there's some pictures involve in it. it just take some common sense and imagination. Todd will always answer all my questions tho.
https://i.imgur.com/dLtnpc9l.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2019-22/IMG_5043.jpg.html)

also replaced all "clip on" style to "screw on" style on the fuel system.
https://i.imgur.com/FQiDVVEl.jpg

drilled couple holes for oil filter relocation. I ending up re drilling to install it an inch lower cus the hoses were too close to passenger side header.
https://i.imgur.com/qkRNM8tl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2019-22/IMG_5076.jpg.html)

finishing my battery relocation and wiring. distributor block splitting one to fuse box and one to starter.
https://i.imgur.com/1KA17MJl.jpg

this is the funny part. I want to hide the fuse box when the windshield washer tank used to be at. I bought a decent side plastic lunch box and mount it underneath it with a bracket. no one will see it once everything installed. lunch fuse box!! whatever works!
https://i.imgur.com/ySW2ytll.jpg

I borrowed some tools from autozone to install some pulleys. ending up only able to install the turn one PS pulley cus the LS1 needs a much longer installation tools to reach the thread.
https://i.imgur.com/rrdCaP9l.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2019-22/IMG_5029.jpg.html)

after spending an hour looking around local store for the ls1 harmonic balancer tool, my time has been wasted cus no one has it except the universal ones. I ending up order it online.
https://i.imgur.com/kEiYMjDl.jpg

I heard people installing it in so many different ways. braking it, hammering it and damaging the crank, use a longer bolt to thread it in. the last thing I wanna do it F up the crank at this point of the project. with the right tools, pulley goes in smoothly in a minute. I added a good $60 bucks tool in my tool box.
https://i.imgur.com/PsCz2Xil.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2019-22/IMG_5027.jpg.html)

putting in the passenger side header. I actually took it out again cus for some reason, its too close or touching the floor. couple hammer underneath took care of it.
https://i.imgur.com/kFjM7Qnl.jpg

also getting small little things done like the vacuum for brake booster. spent some time looking for the right adaptor.
https://i.imgur.com/HYLylo5l.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2019-22/IMG_5038.jpg.html)

while installing the o2 sensor, seems like the harness is a little too short to reach the bottom of the headers. found a local guy on craigslist selling this. ending up only used it on the driver side.
https://i.imgur.com/m2C0aIcl.jpg

finishing up the wiring in the interior. I ending up drilling another hole for fuse, wiper and power cable. cant find a good place for the PCM yet. i'll let it sits there for now and worry about it later.
https://i.imgur.com/O1ivtdWl.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/0uCNWLnl.jpg

bought this couple weeks ago. was debating using some other radiator hoses. ending up being lazy on doing research on customizing other car's hose and went straight to mishimoto package with its radiator and fan.
https://i.imgur.com/fE1IkdKl.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2019-22/IMG_5440.jpg.html)

the coming two days looks good without rain. gonna finish small things like throttle cable, dip stick, install radiator, tighten all nuts and bolts. should be able to put in all fluid and try start it up this week if not, next week for sure. hopefully everything goes fine cus im gone for vacation for two weeks. wanna have it fire up before I go. wish me luck.

they do. Todd sent me this through email and I just print it out. It gives u some idea but it will be better if pictures are included instead of reading couple of paragraphs. it requires a lot of imagination and common sense. the most helpful part is actually emailing Todd. he gives detail information on top of the standard instruction. im talking about detail measurement and diameter left and right.

its getting very close to first start up. got quite a lot of small stuff done. lets just go straight into business.

im gonna start off with some more pictures of my fuse box relocation. honestly, i think its kinda embarrassing to show. its the exact location i want it to be, i just couldn't find a better way or box at the moment. i basically pull all the guts out from factory box, twisted it around and box it up underneath the panel. this is for temporary, once everything runs fine, i'll revisit this fuse box.

it actually did not start at the first crank cus my stupid ass forgot to plug in the fuel pump after i installed new lines like 2 months ago. starter sounds a little weird with a lot of clicking noise but it barely cranks and started the bad boy.

i had to shut it off real quick after first start cus i had a fuel leak on the fuel pressure gauge. some teflon tape took care of it and start it back up again.

i let it run for a while to check for other leaks. it runs super smooth, just the exhaust being loud cus of open header. i let it heat up until both E fan turns on then shut it down. found coolant leaking on the water pump where i tapped the steam pipe. also have an oil leak on the oil filter relo hose at the oil pan. I'm gonna re visit those area next time but I'm happy for now.

just couple of pictures of getting all the fluid in it.

its safe to start putting some body parts on.
https://i.imgur.com/moLirH9l.jpg

now this is really coming together..
https://i.imgur.com/De63zfTl.jpg

now after the excitement, the clicking noise from the starter and weak start is also a problem other than small fluid leaks. i tried to start it up the next day after bleeding the clutch and it wouldn't. now it just clicks without even a weak crank.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m623/kelvinpun/LS1%20build/week%2024/th_next%20day%20no%20start_1.mp4 (http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m623/kelvinpun/LS1%20build/week%2024/next%20day%20no%20start_1.mp4)

im consulting both Yuri and Todd for some advise. not sure if I'm hooking up the starter correctly?! not having enough ground?! or i simply have a bad starter?! which i doubt it cus it started fine when i went test drove the car.

https://i.imgur.com/KjjXdj6l.jpg

this is how i hook up my starter. my understanding, the smaller wire on top is the trigger wire, the bottom is the power. i put 2 gauge wire from battery, then the harness goes on top and the nut bolts them together. advise and thoughts anyone before i drop another 200 for a new starter?!?!

its good that at least it starts and run a couple of times the other day cus i will be gone for vacation for 2 weeks and likely won't be able to touch this 3 weeks from now. it definitely makes my coming vacation much more enjoyable. just need to take care of small little things here and there and soon will be back on the ground...

any help and recommendation will be appreciated. thanks for watch!

Does it start with a booster pack? Did you keep the battery charged up to capacity during the car's downtime? Is the engine block to chassis ground cable in place?

Have the battery output capacity tested. If it was sitting around discharged for a while, it may have killed the battery. Are you using the typical lead-acid battery or something aftermarket like an Optima AGM?

Sharp looking engine bay! Those tubs are on point.

dbeiler
02-20-2016, 05:47 PM
Nvrmind, I see you have an Optima. They can be discharged without damage. If you have 12.6 volts, it'll have sufficient cranking power.

I'm not seeing an engine block ground cable though. You need a dedicated ground cable even if you're using solid metal engine mounts.

Why do you have 2 cables attached to the starter power terminal? Is one supplying battery power to the starter and the other being used to feed battery power to the car?

thanks for the help..

here's how i installed the wiring specialties ground wire kit.
https://i.imgur.com/WE9CIE2l.jpg

two to the top of the factory steam pipe nuts, one to the coil pack bracket, one to the intake manifold bolt, the tail goes to the firewall.
theres also one ground wire comes from the engine harness that i bolted onto the back of the head.

for the starter, the blue and green come from the engine harness. the red that bolts underneath the blue is battery power from distributor block.
https://i.imgur.com/KjjXdj6l.jpg

heres the distributor block. red power comes through the firewall, then one red goes through the fender for fusebox, the black at the bottom goes to the starter.
https://i.imgur.com/lTUYko0l.jpg (http://s1135.photobucket.com/user/kelvinpun/media/LS1%20build/week%2024/KEYC7240.jpg.html)

i kinda feel like it doesnt have enough ground with the ground wire kit. i might try some direct ground from the engine head to frame rail. not sure if i m wiring the starter correctly which i m gonna do more research on the starter diagram. for the battery, its brand new. i just hooked it up right before i start it. i'll also check the voltage on it after i get a better volt meter.

thanks for the help.

Did you just double up two 1/8" spacers on each motor mount to slim the engine up a 1/4"?

Heywood Jablomie

Sounds like a ground issue, check that you have sufficient grounding on the battery end as well. You can also check the starter by just jumping it directly with battery power.

random weeks after my vacation #1

didn't do anything for the past month cus i went vacation and a good friend came visit right after. i was still doing some research and looking for parts to complete this project while on vacation. lets start with some unrelated pictures.

my friend borrow me his G wagon while i was in town. it was fun to drive a big turbo diesel car in a small town. i could never imagine myself buying one tho.

after i came back, i borrowed one of my car to my friend and went for a short run. its rare to take both of my cars out.

alright enough BS. lets get back to the topic. after a long rest on the project, i got back to business. all body parts back on. tighten up all suspension arms, finally its back on the ground.

Really enjoyed reading though this. Awesome work, especially because this seemed like a somewhat attainable build for a lot of people in the way that you did a ton of this stuff by yourself! Looking forward to more.

Really glad I found this thread. I'm going with the fueled performance kit too, just doing LS3 and T56 magnum. Same wiring setup and everything. Glad you had good customer service too. I don't think I'm going to do my own tubs since I'm not drifting but I do like how they made so much extra room for running the wiring and stuff. Interested to see how you like the PBM pros, I thought about getting them but figured they're more geared to drifting. You could always get your headers professionally coated and wrap them with header wrap too to really keep heat out of the bay.

I'm overseas and can't start my project til late this year but it's awesome to see someone doing almost the same thing I want to, yours is so so well done too. Looking forward to updates

thx man. im not a pro, but I do have time and patient. its all about research, buying the right tools and parts and no short cut.

I was thinking to do a LS3 as well. but my skill level is not there for all the wiring mods. WS haven't made any PNP harness for that yet so I rather start with a simple LS swap for now. ideally will be LS3 with tr6060 from a newer Camaro drop out with the updated 6 speed. just most people stick with T56 for whatever reason.

engine bay heat is gonna be something I gotta tackle down right after. the design of my s15 front end doesn't allow much cool air to go in and out. this project just never ends....

Yeah, I'm not that great at wiring either. I'm trying to learn though.. but WS is working on a drive by wire harness that'll work with the LS3. They said they're looking to finish it up by the end of the year. I'd rather not try to tackle it myself, lol

Yeah the tr6060/t56 Magnum is a much better option, I think t56 is rated to 450wtq and the Magnum is 700wtq.

you could probably just use a vented hood, and a twin fan setup that kicks on at 205 or so. I don't remember if you're running a single fan. but i'll be coating everything I can and wrapping everything in exhaust tape as well, plus running an oil cooler. I've got the OEM kouki bumper and I'm worried about heat too. the car has a horrible carbon fiber vented hood on it but if it works, i'll just get one that actually fits better and run it that way. Interested to see how the gold reflective tape works too, I hear it works great

i know this build thread is long over due. I aint abandoning this build thread. just that the car has been at the body shop, was told it takes about 2 weeks, ending up took 3 months and i cant do anything about it. many parts are collecting dust waiting to put on the car.

after body shop:

i requested straighten up the rear quarter panel smooth out the whole car. don't even need them to paint. finally got a call after 3 months of waiting. took a quick look at it and went on the flat bed. overall, i wasn't happy. body work can be better. and my car is full of bird shit...
https://i.imgur.com/l6VhBEIl.jpg

its finally home. its so dirty then i didn't even know where to start.

after taking some time to inspect the whole car. clean up all dusty engine bay. i went straight to business. all front end panels taken out for wash and ready for next project.

while im build this pretty expensive project, i started to pick up another pricy hobby i left off 15 years ago. its amazing now how the RC world have been up to these days. modifying this is like modifying a real car. control arms for more steering angle, alignment set up, suspension and more.....

it might look easy in picture, but it take a good couple of hours on each panel to make it look good. good the the 3M vinyl is pretty forgiving.

Good update, but did you apply that vinyl straight over bare primer? If so, I'm surprised it even adhered to start with. I would be concerned about how long it will stick to primer for before falling off.

i sand down the entire panel including the back edges with around 150 grid. done that before, it shouldn't be a problem.

UPDATE!

I did not give up on this build. for the past 8 months, i moved out from my parents, switched job, settled, bought my first home, move again and settle. finally got my own place and garage. took my car back from my parent's house to my own garage so i can continue my master piece. I'm looking to attend some drift event this summer so i gotta get my hands on it every week like i used to. hopefully i can get it ready in a month or so. let's get to the update i had for the past couple months.

i kept changing my mind for the exhaust choices. from a standard ISIS modify to y-pipe, E46 quad exhaust muffler to finally decided to go with full custom true dual. told it to Track spec auto sport in fremont. super clean shop and looking at what other cars they are working on, don't think things can go wrong.

Jon, co owner and master tech, was extremely professional. constantly gave me updates even on sunday when he's off. did not discriminate my 240sx at all. and the welding was super clean. i went with dual resonators to magaflow muffler in the center, then dual tip on the factory location to retain somewhat factory look.

those are BMW E46 dual titanium tip. yes i have all four and just using two. and they aint cheap. but it looks exactly the way i want it.

fast forward to 2017, nothing much was done to the car but life changes quite a bit. finally bought my own house and have my own place for my project.

one of the first thing i done to my new house was epoxy flooring. I'm gonna spend more on it cus its not just a garage. its gonna be my man cave. custom cabinet, upgrade tool box, AC... more to come.

this is where im at now. coming up will be finishing the quarter panels and roof. will consult some windshield place to replace all my all seal. once full wrap is completed, will wire up the stock s14 cluster so i can put the dash back on. then alignment. then road test. then i don't no.
im just gonna continue working on it.

thank you so much for the ones been following this build and all the kind words. i was reading one of the craziest LS build with corvette transaxle build that got abandoned. pretty disappointed as i was following that build while doing mines. i'll make sure this build wont die.

2017 update part 2

Took me a long while to fix all the pictures in this threadbut I’m glad that its done so I can continue on this build thread. Cant reallydo a weekly update anymore but I’ll do some quick summary on the 2nd half of 2017.

Finishing off the wrap on Q panel, trunk etc…
https://i.imgur.com/YwxwrJ0l.jpg

There’s no way that I can wrap the roof and both Q panels inone piece so I did a cut line near the rear of the roof.
https://i.imgur.com/RTxUVbvl.jpg

Trimming the edges.
https://i.imgur.com/d9tUKo7l.jpg

Bought some more expensive tools. I always wanted one ofthis so I don’t have to turn on the noise compressor for just taking out one wheel.
https://i.imgur.com/80YMLGxl.jpg

Upgrading the tool box I’ve been using for about 10 years. Ialways wanted a snap on box but it will be 10 times the cost of this. I m very happy with the new box.
https://i.imgur.com/znYfZ84l.jpg

The reason why this thread will slow down in update.
https://i.imgur.com/FDE7H3jl.jpg

I also went off focus on re modeling my garage/man cave.
https://i.imgur.com/Jogbpypl.jpg

Finished all wall with new paint, installed all cabinet, 9 showroom style recessed lights.
https://i.imgur.com/mSi3Pcgl.jpg

I don’t even have AC for my house but I installed a split AC in my garage with heat. Working on any project in here during summer time is enjoyable now.
https://i.imgur.com/DGYvkG7l.jpg

As the baby is coming soon. We added another new ride to my family. It’s the new X3 M40i. this thing is as quick as my M3. Mommy need for speed.
https://i.imgur.com/d4InXiYl.jpg

I’ll stop here for 2017. Things are settle down after 1 year of moving in to my new house. The project has been sitting under the car cover for the most time this year. I’ll have more update for 2018 as I haven’t been drifting since I started this project almost 3 years ago. Some quick update for2018 is coming soon.

2018 update 1

I m planning to have more frequent update on 2018 as things are more settled. also I m way over due for a drift event so this project needs to be running.

i'll start of the 2018 update with this sweet lady who came to my life. my future drift buddy.
https://i.imgur.com/EkRfth7l.jpg

during my 3 weeks off from work, I started off replacing the starter to XS power. long story short, I had a bad starter since the first start up thinking I have wiring problem or bad ground. put this in, fired right up strong every single time.
https://i.imgur.com/dnMwYAbl.jpg

I started to put back half the interior back and clean up some sound system wiring.
https://i.imgur.com/kO4oGhtl.jpg

now to the part that I never looked forward to in this project. I have to clean up the wiring.
https://i.imgur.com/iON05sMl.jpg

one if the challenge is the cluster harness. I have to re wire it from my s15 cluster to a stock s14 cluster. good that I bought a cluster with pigtail. I just match all the colors to put them together.
https://i.imgur.com/1ty5phil.jpg

after all, I was able to make the speedo work with the SGI-5E. however the tach wasn't. a quick call to WS, Yuri guided me to check some wiring. ending up the tach on the cluster is bad. good that I bought a spare one and I just swap all the lights over.
https://i.imgur.com/U1SdNnTl.jpg

polished the lens..
https://i.imgur.com/KeRyUEnl.jpg

all lights and gauges work now. temp, oil pressure, engine light. even the fuel level works now.
https://i.imgur.com/EKLpx1jl.jpg

big achievement. got a fully functional cluster. just need to do more adjustment on the speed but that's easy.
https://i.imgur.com/CUIp8Mpl.jpg

as everyone know. project mean problems after problems. theres a exhaust leak on my custom piping as I see some water coming from this joint. will take it back to Trackspec for this. no big deal.
https://i.imgur.com/O43ssokl.jpg

that's it so far. it looks more completed now than ever.
https://i.imgur.com/oBHOLhZl.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/YG16Gg1l.jpg

will finished wrapping the rear bumper and put in the dash next week. some final check on suspension parts and an alignment will be done after that. Sonoma Drift season just started this week and I m planning to go test it out no later than May.
