Ive found myself watching a lot of HG and DIY network lately shows like house hunters renovations, The Vanilla Ice Project, and property brothers. I have no idea whats wrong with me but I suspect that this is most likely due to the fact that I'm getting older and priorities are shifting a little bit. But here's the kick and the reason why I'm asking you guys... I have a particular fondness for the shows in which they're upgrading homes. I figured that this is because I just like seeing transformations and people making stuff nicer (hence the obsession with my cars). Any of you guys watch these shows also or am I just effin wierd and getting old? :-/

I like real estate investing for the same reason as i did for cars.

You need to get off the couch though. I've never watched a full episode of those shows but I can tell you they aren't real. If you really want to start buying houses you need to take action. Go out and start talking to people and attend a seminar or two, just don't get sucked too deep into those $30k progams by Than Merrill, Donald Trump, or Rich dad. Similar education can be had for much much less- free in some cases if you know a good mentor.

Yes, except we still do.

The only thing I can't stand is that these channels are making EVERY flip or remodel look the same.

This shit will not age well...

We are building a "semi-custom" home now and all the fixtures and handles will be classic/neutral designs (or the closest thing)

Source: I have gold fixtures everywhere, thanks 90s. :picardfp:

My got he hooked on watching these little DIY/Home shows. She's a realtor and she used them to really get me interested in buying a home. It's what made me really make sure the home I buy has some type of space that I can turn into an income suite, like rent it out to a tenant or let the wife run a home day care out of it. But just like being on forums, you have to take that stuff with a grain of salt. I did learn to identify styling trends that I like/don't like and a lot more. But there is a sea of fake crap that you have to pick your way through and I wouldn't really look at them for much more than a source to draw design ideas. With that side - I like Fixer Upper right now, because they're based about 90 minutes south of us, so their home/renovation prices are more familiar to Texas viewers like my wife & I. Absolutly hate Flip or Flop though. That couple is too douchy for me.

Lol. I'm already in the process of buying a house, but not to flip, just to live in. I have zero interest in doing it myself just because I'm a mechanic and my day job is physically demanding enough. Thats not to say that I won't be upgrading it, but I'm not trying to buy it to "flip" it. Perhaps just rent it out in the future when we buy our second house. I more watch them for ideas on what I would like in the house. Even though my lady will be deciding stuff, I'd like to have some input :-/

Haha yeah I think this is the reason why I've been interested in it a little more

My personal favorite right now is House Hunters Renovation. I've always liked HH whether it be mansions, international, or whatever but this show is like all the cool parts of both.

Well I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one, I was getting worried there for a minute lol

Yeah, I live in Texas but the wife is from Socal. So she wants to find a cute old bungalow like the ones you find all over the place in Long Beach. Reminds her of home. So we're looking at old, historic fixer uppers. The shows may not be completely realistic, but at least I'm a little more knowledgeable about the clusterfuck that awaits us than I had been before I started watching these shows. Plus, I've become an old house snob now... lol... I hate all the generic looking new house builds all over the place here in Texas. No character like the old school, historic stuff.

After working in banking in a high net worth area, the majority of my clients all had real estate.

It was practically the number one thing they recommended getting into.

As long as you're not stupid about it, you can't go wrong. Bought my first home at 23. Sitting on a ton of equity and about to make a move on a second home without touching the equity in my first.

Anyway, as far as DIY goes, keep in mind it does become very labor intensive, it's not as cheap as some of those shows make it out to be, and you'll definitely be in over your head within a very short period of time if you're not doing this with an experienced person.

Last time I did the math, I put in right around $35k-40k to fully remodel my home inside and out. Brand new bathroom, every single room refinished, recessed lighting, custom kitchen, refinished exterior, block wall around the property, privacy gates, etc.

Find someone who does good work at a reasonable rate/price.

These are a bit outdated since we legitimately finished some two years ago, but you get the idea.

Getting some work done right now (new driveway + additional concrete work). I'll be wrapping up my garage remodel once the concrete work is done.

^^Looks awesome man^^

I like what you did with the bathroom, keeping the same basic layout and just updating it with modern style.

I use to work for a general contractor in San Diego for a while so I have some experience with it so I have a feeling I'll be doing some of the work but there's one consistent theme in those shows that big jobs go to the pros and I have zero issues with that. Its just like it is with cars, pretty much anyone with the slightest amount of know how and basic tools can do oil changes, but with bigger jobs like headgaskets and timing belts they come to me.

CrimsonRockett, you give me hope that my reno might not hammer my ass as bad as I thought it would. But I'm sure, if I end up poorly picking a dogshit pile of a house, results may vary.
