Hello everyone
So I have purchased from overseas before, specifically from the UK and Japan.
Usually I have just paid the shipper whatever it costs to ship it and they just send it to me. Sometimes there is a tax that they collect on delivery.
Just recently I purchased an entire pumpkin assembly from an S15 for a flat price shipped to my house from a jdm engine importer in canada.
He called me up today, asking to confirm some information such as my address and what would happen. It was the usual stuff like "is this your address, Ill give you a tracking number ASAP, they will call you to schedule a time beforehand" etc etc
Then he asks for my social security number or a tax id number to fill out some forms for US customs. Since it would be freight shipped, customs would inspect it so he was doing all the paperwork for it and asked for my social security number and I explained that I have never needed to give that out to anyone and even my local shop who buys engines from Canada never had to give out any info like that.
He just said it's not for him it is just for Customs and it will not be published and he "totally understands" why Im hesitant. I asked about just refunding me the money and apparently theres a 10% restocking fee ( on stuff that has not even been shipped out yet)
He offered me the number for someone to do the customs paperwork for me (some kind of broker)
Naturally I am doing my own research and none of the forms ask for the social security number of the buyer nor the tax id number anywhere.
Has anyone ever had to do anything like this?
Just seems weird to me. I will just be contacting paypal/my credit card company tomorrow since the shop wants to charge me a restocking fee on something that has not moved ( its been packaged whoopty doo)
