Bought my first Z on Sunday...a 91 300ZX Twin Turbo in pearl white with 107,000 miles...unfortunately it is automatic though. Bought it from a used car dealer in NY. Cost me $7,000 ($6,200 for the car and $800 in fees).

Let's start with the cons- there's a slight crack in the bumper, all the wiper blades need to be replaced, it's missing the radio face, clock is not working, and it's missing the cowl seal on the passengers side (noticed after I took it home). Not really worried about any of these as they're pretty much an easy replacement. Another problem I noticed when I got home, was that it takes about 4 or 5 tries to start up when it's hot...cold start is great. This is what I'm worried about. Haven't checked for codes yet, but could this be a big problem? Any idea on what I'll be spending to fix this in the worst case scenario?

Now the pros- no rust, no leaks, clean carfax, 2 owner Cali car, paint is pretty decent, AC works, t tops don't leak (already been a few days of heavy rain here).

With all that being said, do you think $7,000 was a good price? How worried should I be about the starting issue?

I personally would never buy a 300zx because I don't like the look for one but they have bad heat soaking issues which causes connectors on the harness to go bad, coil packs go bad quicker, everytime I'm around a Z32 it seems it always needs an injector or 6 replaced lol, but I mean sub $5000 would be considered a good deal for what you've listed, z32's just don't hold any real valve from what I've noticed, but hopefully the issues you speak of are minor like you think and you get some enjoyment out of the car

hot start issue could be as smiple as a bad ecu coolant temp sensor or the car could actually be running hot- lifted head, headgasket, bad water pump, coolant leak, blocked radiator... Nothing on these cars is really simple though. I would get an experienced tech on top of it.

Check the factory service manual for your hot start issue. There is a whole section on "my car is doing ______ how do I fix it?" Nissan was pretty cool about stuff like that. There is also copies of the FSM free online if you look hard enough

Its pretty high priced but I actually paid more than that for my old 90TT but it had like 89000 and was already modded and 5speed.

-Clocks always go bad on them.No biggie
-Pass cowl Trim is expensive as hell....even more for the driverside.
-Prob a fuel issue on the start up. Injectors are notorious on those. Most likely something to do with it.COuld be the Fuel Controller that those have.
Other than that they don't have problems. Just a pain to fix.

Z's are def not for just anyone...especially someone who doesn't know how to work on cars since they are the worst for Being very tight on the engine and Expensive parts. + the turbo ones are x2 on everything$$.

Most Z owners have thiers looking like shit,Ricey or "Run of the Mill", so I decided to sell the TT and get a NA one,(like the 2+2 looks much better now) and Get rid of the VG all together.

7 sounds high but maybe you picked up a clean and healthy one. I would buy good set of tools including power tools, hydraulic low pro jack&jackstands, then get ready to go over every inch of the car and take a look at what needs to be replaced. I would change all fluids regardless and that alone will end up at like $400. Good luck man! Post some pics!

Yeah, you should've bought a Skyline. For $7,000. With a boat anchor RB20DET, or an even more anemic DE. And 4 doors.

But hey, it says Skyline on the back....right?

Can't you get a decent Z33 for around $7k these days?
