Good idea, I haven't thought about that one..

My apologies.

Good luck with the rebuild. Going with your higher compression ideas this time?

what did happen exactly?

Ouch.. that sucks. My engine lost compression on #3 too. Found out the valves went on it. Maybe this is a common thing on SR motors.

hmmmmm , sorry to hear that what kind of fuel pump you running? Please do not tell me stock. If so it would be another SR killed by stock fuel pump not pushing enough fuel for the 370 injectors causing it to lean out.

Well...

I was at my annual Nissan drag meet... First time I was doing drag racing this year. Had no problems whatsoever with 19 psi on the S15 T28. I even set it on the highway for a few pulls going to the strip.

On my first run, the car did not pull as strong as expected after 5000 rpm, but my boost was steady. I did a 14.08 @ 92mph, very far from the 13.34 @ 111.6 mph I did last year. I said to myself, I'll try another run and pack it up if it does not work... I lined up against a friend S14 with S14SR. We were neck to neck, had a hood lenght up until the 1/8, then the car had O power, felt standing still, boost was steady at 19 psi, made a huge smoke cloud, slowed down as my EGT climbed and went back and parked the car.

Upon inspection, all 4 spark plugs had broken electrodes and #3 cylinder plug had some of the inner porcelain broken off... I knew at that point I was fucked. My GF got me some other plugs express, I put them it, car felt like shit, running on 2-3 cylinders. I went back home, did a compression test....
120-108-0-108. Pretty low considering I was doing 140-145 on all cylinders last fall.. So the engine is dead. The real cause is still unknown... I don't think I leaned out, I have a Walbro fuel pump AND 550cc injectors with a retuned ECU...

I am putting the car in storage. I will be rebuilding my spare bloc with a 9.5:1 compression, get better response. If my S15 T28 is scrapped or unrebuildable, I might even go with something smaller, I haven't decided...

I am also looking for a cheap 86-92 N/A FC RX-7 for daily driving... So if any of you know anyone that has one for sale in NorthEastern States, I might be a buyer.

Lemme know.

doh, sorry to hear that... i guess thats it for autoxing this year. its better that it happened at the end of summer rather than the beginning...

ouch, thats no fun man.
i did that same exact thing recently (last week), except i wasnt drag racing, and i dont have an SR.
i was cruisin around on the highway with this chick in the car with me. i floored it past this other 240 thatd been messing with me for a while, as i did, i revved too high. it didnt soudn bad, or do anything adverse to the acceleration at first, but then the car fellt like it had no ass 1 min later. and it studdered. i checked the car, and all the electrodes were broken off, and one of the porcelain peices was anhilated.

what kind of plugs u guys using?? the one that teh electrods broke off?? just to make sure i'm not using the same 1. sorry to hear that . C

So have you figured out what went wrong? this is kinda strange... you have 550s and tuned ecu.. hmm

kidinthehall
08-29-2004, 02:00 PM
holy shit, how did you NOT hear that kind of detonation. That motor had to rattle like hell to do that to plugs.

HaLo
08-29-2004, 04:56 PM
I dunno... I really don't know what went wrong...

All plugs have broken electrodes... NGK V-Power...

Oh yeah, btw, I did a 40 km drive back home on 0 compression 3rd cyl and I did not burn any prestone or huge oil amounts...

yo halo, i have a 87 MA70 at mah house. im not driving it but, it should be good for a daily driver. just needs a tune up. interested? i have the head apart right now cuz i'm just finishing up a bhg job, but it'll be running fine by next week. im in IL, does that classify as NE?

HaLo
08-30-2004, 06:13 AM
No thanks, my GF already has a MA70... I am looking for something a little lighter. :)

gsracer
08-30-2004, 08:57 AM
your walboro could have died, people say im paranoid cuz i check my spark plugs once a week, that had to have been coming for a while, you sohuld have heard the detonation which must have been massive to do that to the plugs and yes walboros do randomly die .

HaLo
08-30-2004, 09:35 AM
Fuel pressure was correct on the fuel pressure gauge...

Ouch damn that sucks man! those plugs look like they went to war and back. shame it didnt wait till you already had the spare motor built :( but hey now you can build both blocks!

HaLo
08-30-2004, 12:33 PM
I could, but funds would not permit me... I will build my high compression SR. I will ask Secret Services to have my ECU retuned... I blame my ECU on that catastrophic failure... My was running damn fine last year with 19 psi and this year on dyno... but i had a retune in between.. :(

Steeles
08-30-2004, 12:37 PM
werd good luck with it mang. im pissed I talked to the local dyno shop last week about getting mine tuned (microtech standalone) and they told me tues or wed of this week. called to set a definaate time today and now they are like we cnt do it till sat. pisses me off I've waited SOOOO long :( /rant, sob story

HaLo
08-30-2004, 12:40 PM
Anyways, unproperly built engines blows. :) My car is stored now, I have a lot of time in front of me. :) I'll get an FC for the time being. :)

Steeles
08-30-2004, 12:46 PM
yeah definately take your time with it. i wanna see the high comp. Im still eager to do one myself. reading this is gonna put that plan for the extra block higher on the ol priority list. mines been gone too long as it is.

HaLo
08-30-2004, 12:50 PM
I need to dissamble the other one to see what went wrong and how damaged is the turbo...

08-30-2004, 12:59 PM
those plugs are fine :)

HaLo
08-31-2004, 01:07 PM
Let's say the guy that retuned my ecu blames it on:

1. The weather (26C, 92% Humidity)
2. The sparkplugs (NGK V-Power, Copper)
3. The Gas (94 octane)

Would he be right? I say no... I say the ECU had a bad timing reprogram: the car did not pull at 5000+RPM.

orion::S14
08-31-2004, 01:18 PM
~78F is not that cold...so its not like it leaned out horribly or anything due to temp...

Copper plugs are run of the mill, V-power or not. Won't cause detonation like that unless they are COMPLETELY the wrong heat range (like a 5 on the NGK scale...too hot).

94 is higher than I run on my 9.5:1 KA with boost...so that's better than most of us can get. Not like it's Cali 91 octane...

I blame too much timing advance built into the ECU...but haven't you been running that at high (+14psi) boost levels for a while with that ECU???

If not the ECU tune, then there's some other ouside factor...like fuel pump not getting enough voltage and leaning out on the top end.

And what do you mean it didn't pull at +5k...only on that run, or all the time? Was this the 1st time you ran that program? Timing that was too far advanced for the RPM/load/boost would have made it run like a bat out of hell...not stop pulling at 5k. Too little timing could not have caused detonation like that...that's why JWT is foolproof...you almost can't blow things up with such little timing advance.

Let us know - Brian

Fuel pressure was correct on the fuel pressure gauge...

MMMmmm...nevermind my speculation about the fuel pump.

...My was running damn fine last year with 19 psi and this year on dyno...but i had a retune in between.

Aha!

Reading does wonders...hehe.

Sounds like the culprit.

Could you have done (some) damage on the way there...you said you set the boost on the highway...?

I dunno...I'll stop post-whoring now!

HaLo
08-31-2004, 01:26 PM
I believe the problem is my ECU retune... but my tuner is squirming like a worm on a hook... he knows it's the 4th SR he blows in our region on timing errors... But he doesn't want to admit it.

I set boost at 19 psi on highway, did a few pulls.

On the 1/4, get did not pull as strong, almost felt like standing still from 5000 and up. That was on my 2 runs, second run, the engine blew.

Var
08-31-2004, 01:29 PM
Hey good stuff at least you blew it up racing. have you taken anything apart yet? timing cover..

HaLo
08-31-2004, 01:36 PM
Did not yet... I don't have the time... I have been pretty busy. :) (posting, talking trash about the tuner, showing off my sparkplugs) :D

Steeles
08-31-2004, 02:49 PM
send some hard piping hitting nuckas to the ecu tuners shop bet he confesses up then! hehe yeah this time around I think its time to get something you can tune yourself :)

hence the reason i AINT fuckin with ANNNNNNNNNy of this ecu shit.. not for a long Long

LONG while.

and 19 psi? damn man, thats just wild. too wild for my tastes.

To bad secret services is closed  (although I heard that one of the guys is still doing it) I've always wanted to take my car there as well.

Sorry to hear about the engine man! That really sucks. Hope you can get it running again soon!

HaLo
08-31-2004, 04:02 PM
Yup, 19 psi is wild... but the previous owner of this turbo was running his car open waste-gate on a JWT setup... never had that kind of detonation... with almost the exact setup I had. Anyways, I am not rushed, I hope I can still get my next ECU done by Secret Services... :)

Steeles
09-01-2004, 07:07 AM
well not by secret services but Enthalpy (scott) is still doing ROM tunes :) and they are still kicking ass

Var
09-01-2004, 09:44 AM
get it done by JWT..it will probably never detonate running pig rich. :) i've heard they are way too conservative with their timing and fuel curves but at least you are safe with it.

HaLo
09-01-2004, 10:28 AM
I was thinking about Scott... When I am ready, I will get an ecu from him.
