Alright, I decided to go all out and make my red top sr20det into a 400hp beast. I already have the intercooler, hks blowoff valve and intake piping. I just need to know from you guys what else I need to reach 400 hp. I want to go with nistune programmer since I belive one could easily retard the timing. I am a newbie, so cut me some slack if I make a mistake. I was thinking about going with the gtx3863r turbo. I am up for suggestions.

Get a built motor if you really want it to last

Yup full build or will have significant reliability issues

Okay, thanks for the suggestion, but I am wanting to put my mechanic skills to work on a project that I can do for myself.

Since the engine is already out, all I am waitng on is the rebuild kit to come in so I can Crack the engine open. Timing chain and it's components are the first thing I made sure to order. I am the kind of idiot who belives in preventative maintence.

I suggest going with some aftermarket rods and pistons, not just a stock rebuild. Take the motor to a machine shop and have them check it all out and be sure to see if you can stay with stock size pistons or if you need to go bigger.

Turbo+injectors+tuneable ecu = 400whp. Get the right size turbo so your not blowing hot air to make that 400whp and it will last. Blow hot air to make that 400 it prob won't last long.

Good idea, might as well ask them before turning the journals and reserfacing the block and head.

What about cams and springs. Any suggestions?

Save yourself some money. Stock block, small cams (Jim Wolfe s3's are good) valve springs are important, and a GT/GTX30R and you're set.

Get supporting fuel mods and tune on E85. 450WHP all day reliably

You need stuff from my for sale thread. Parting out my 500+ whp SR and supporting mods.

400 is possible on a stock block with a good tune, are you planning on getting it professionally tuned or were you planning on doing this yourself?

Personally I'm a big fan of the newer Tomei ARMS turbos. Relatively small framed, bottom mount turbo's (helps the car's center of gravity), and very affordable considering you get every little bit to help the install (factory metal gaskets, hardware, etc). Their M8270 can easily make 400+ with the right cams and supporting fuel modifications (again, with a good, professional tune).

This person made 422 on a stock block SR and supporting mods with a good tune. I wish they had graphed his AFR

I've done and seen it done 100 times. Your best bet when going over 350rwhp (perhaps 370rwhp, depends on if the car is a daily or not) is to go straight for the 2jz-gte engine.

Reasoning, the oem 2jz-gte bottom (and top fwiw) support 500-600rwhp in a daily driver, and cost just as much as a stock sr20det bottom end (~$1800 current pricing)

You can literally have two (2x) 2jz-gte engines with OEM internals, one in the car and one on the floor ready for action, for the price of one built sr20det engine- notwithstanding the fact that building an sr20det lends its own slew of potential issues.

I could settle for a bit less horse power. I plan on doing the tuning myself, even tho I am not a professional; however, I will drive it to the nearing tuning shop, five hours away, when I get done with it.

but where's the fun in that? ;)

Right? Two less cylinders is way cooler and more fun

2 blocks aren't very usefull when they can't power the car.

Plus a couple thousand getting a transmission setup that's worth anything to support that 2jz swap. Looking at a minimum of 2 grand for the cd009 six speed conversion I think.

Yea another issue when reaching 400hp is the trans.

sr trans won't last very long with 400hp depending how you drive.

Also remember when reaching for those power goals everything has to be upgraded or your simply break the weakest link.

Motor runs strong then The clutch goes, then the transmission, then the axel and so on.

Just because the motor can put out 400hp doesn't mean the car can reliably handle it.

it depends on what you wanna do with the car but if you just wanna see the 400 number on dyno you could just do forged pistons, metal head gasket, arp head studs, 850cc injectors, tubular top mount manifold, precision 6262, BC 264/264 cams, and an enthalpy tune on like 20psi would make 400 pretty easily, I'm not saying it'll last but it'll make at least 400

2 blocks aren't very usefull when they can't power the car.

The materials needed to perform the engine swap are around $5000~ some can do it for less

The materials and labor to build an 550-650bhp sr20det are also about $5000, if not more.

I wouldn't have bothered to suggest what I am suggesting unless I had put some serious though into it. I've experienced both sides of the coin, and can provide examples if you wish.
I think you will find that swapping an OEM 2jz-gte engine into a 240sx is cheaper and more reliable at 500-600rwhp than any sr20det engine.

Some of you guys seem to like laggy cars. Using turbos that are good for 600+hp for a 400hp car is dumb.

400hp with a sr is a piece of cake and can easily be done with factor intake and exhaust manifolds and a T2 framed bolt on turbo.
