I am fixing to rebuild my engine, and I was wondering. Will it be a good idea to install a gtx2863r into a red top sr20det with the stock cams? I am thinking, correct me if I am wrong, that with the boost controler, I can adjust to a lower psi setting to accommodate the bigger turbo. I live far away from a dyno shop, and I don't want to tune it myself so. I don't want to put bigger cams on it because then I have to tune it, right? I will put bigger I injectors along with supporting mods but for now, and since the engine is out, I want to put the bigger turbo and be able to drive it untile i decide to order the supporting mods which, i hope, will give me a bit more that 400 hp. I am up for any suggestions.

No, a larger turbo, injectors or other components will need a tune. That's the short answer. Others will chime in.

Don't rush the job, get it all, and do it at once.

Tune, Injectors, MAF, cams, turbo...do it right or it'll end up hurting itself.

You won't get near 400 without stock cams too (I'm sure there is a unicorn example out there running a zillion PSI that has, but that's just it...a unicorn)

stock cam/engine on 93 octane stops around 320rwhp 18psi

big cam, same situation, 380rwhp

Ok, thank you for letting me know, but for now, I will just rebuild the engine as I need it for I use it daily... well... used it. It make sense to just buy everything at once an then get it tuned that way I will not damage the freshly rebuilt engine.

Not related but for what it's worth.. Earlier this week my stock internals redtop with only z32 maf, s15 turbo, 850's, Nistune, and bolt-ons made 313whp at 13psi on 91 octane.

Not all setups are teh same, remember

I wouldn't put that turbo on a stock 'bolt on' built engine, or if you do, stay way out of boost.

no it didnt, someone just played with the number for you to make you happy. No dynojet in the history of man would give you 300rwhp at 13psi on a stock engine, thats for sure. I dont care what turbo.

In fact the S15 turbo is known for its capacity to be absolutely positively tapped out at 20~psi on a stock engine around 300rwhp. So 313 although believable at 20psi (on a brand new turbo on a brand new engine) it would be an act of god on an old worn out redtop at 13psi.

A fully dressed sr20det, with headwork and manifolds, will make 280rwhp at 13psi if run to just 6500rpm with a typical 2871r compressor (with an 86 a/r on a full race manifold no less)

There is some thing wrong here ...

My last tune with s15 turbo on E85 fuel and tomei poncams @18psi was at 300whp.
Dynapack dyno.

I find it extremely hard to belive you made that power on piss gas, with an s15 turbo at the boost level

100% agreed.
