WARNING! Some pictures were taken with a potato.
Hello Zilvia!
A little back ground on my project. I’ve been working on this for a few years, or at least collecting parts for it for about 3 years. I picked up my motor when I was stationed in Okinawa back in 2012. I did the whole yahoo auctions and Up Garage thing and started stock piling some parts. I scored my wheels, some Bride seats and rails and some miscellaneous parts here and there. Then around February 2013 my wife at the time asked me for a divorce and I haven’t looked back since!
I bought my 2 tone coupe from a dealer in Appalachian, New York sight unseen. The pics looked good, he sent me a few crappy pics of the frame rails, but nothing to clear for me to tell if the car was really clean or not. I said screw it, the price is right, it’s a factory 5 speed 2 tone with power everything and no sunroof or wing. It was exactly what I was looking for. I had it shipped to my dad’s house in Iowa to wait for me to get out of the Air Force. In the meantime, I had a friend go over to my dad’s and check it out. He sent me over 100 pics of every inch of the car and man did I luck out. Not a spot of rust on this thing, body was perfectly straight frame rails were straight and all of the corners in the engine bay and shock towers were good to go.
Fast forward to October 2013, I separated from the Air Force and came home. I Had the car trailered to my new place before my tools or any of my parts arrived from Japan.

After all of my stuff arrived I had to tear into everything and start messing with something that would give me some instant gratification. After all, I had been waiting a long time!

I started ordering some more parts. Picked up some Fortune Auto 500s, all the SPL arms tension rods and tie rod ends. Z32 rear ebrake swap and contano 5 lug ups. Energy suspension bushings and isis sub frame bushings. Cleaned up the subframe and control arms and put a coat of POR15 on everything. Then new ball joings and assembly.

My buddies Kris and Beans came by to roll my fenders. Going to probably have to do a mild pull later after the alignment is done to get everything the way I want it.

The original plan was to build the bottom end and throw a haltech on it deleting the MAFs and going MAP, then later down the road build the head and throw bigger turbos on it. After upgrading to the N1 Block(which wasn’t planned), I decide that I may as well go ahead and go all out and aim for what I ultimately wanted the build to be like in the end. Tomei Poncam Type A’s and twin Garrett 2860r-5s.

Scored some Tomei manifolds and some brand new ITBs off of yahoo auctions for a steal! Got them both for less than the manifolds retail for, and the ITBs are listed at like 1200 from Nissan.

Shimming the valves. This was an absolute nightmare! I ended up having to order shims from a company in Australia. Then after I received them, one was still out by 3 thousandths… so I had to have the valve cut and that was a whole other debacle in itself.

https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/v/t1.0-9/11391361_10203822250827718_1514333275465281572_n.j pg?oh=ff7892272eba560c30f87ceb64ebbde0&oe=56CA6FA5

Finally all shimmed up and ready to be timed and bolted to the block.

Took a little break from building this money pit and went to Final bout in Shawano WI. TF Dave was kind enough to give me and a bunch of buddies a ride in the LS Rocket Bunny car. What a blast!

Shortly after that, a buddy and I went down to Orlando to visit another buddy of ours who just happens to work at this awesome place… His pro 2 car just got a build page recently, go check it out!

Came home and got back to work. Got the head Torqued down using ARP hardware and a Cosworth head gasket.

I needed a little more semi instant gratification. So I threw the front coils, 5 lug hubs and wheels on and then pushed her out into the drive way for a bath and some pictures. That’s my first Evo in the back… She’s somewhere in Alaska now.

Got the timing belt on and started mocking up some other parts. R33 GtsT crossmember and Syko mounts. This was the original color choice for the valve covers…

My buddy picked up a brand new (at the time) Mustang Gt last June and was itching to take an epic road trip. Well, lucky for both of us he went on shutdown for a few weeks for his job and I got fired from a job I hated. We packed our bags and drove all the way east on I80 to New York City, and then down the east coast stopping in DC, Virginia Beach, and then stopping in Orlando again, this time for a week. While there we helped our buddy work on his car some more and saw the sights a bit. Picked up some parts too… mostly for other friends back home though lol.

Since I had the time on this trip, I made my way over to visit the awesome guys over at Raw Brokerage. I was being a really bad tourist and not taking pictures of enough things/people… but I did get this pic of some sick cars out front.

On the way home from Orlando, we made a pit stop at the tail of the dragon. All I can say is that if you ever get the chance to go, take it! Such an amazing adventure!

Well finally got home and had to decide what I wanted to do with my life, so I signed up for school and started taking some classes. Meanwhile I kept sinking time and money into this financial problem I have (read : Project Car)
Clearancing the oil pain for the steering rack

Started to bolt more parts on and then got a little stupid and wanted to put AN fittings on everything…

Then I started to tackle this cluster F***

https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/11401459_10203822261987997_3427357693746261642_n.j pg?oh=296e0e540b481b272ae73d31cee74fe2&oe=56C9281D

At this point I finally decided on an engine management. After talking to the guys over at Sound Performance in Chicago, I decided to go with the ProEFI 128. Then I picked up some of my fuel system parts. Tomei fuel rail and ID1300s

I also scored a pair of these brand new in a trade with a friend of mine.

I eventually came to the conclusion that the purple valve covers just won’t quite look right under the hood of the 2 tone. So I had them redone.

Finally got the Intake, ITBs, and fuel rail bolted in for good. The ITBs were a real PITA to get set right. Even though the linkages were brand new, one of them didn’t want to spin easily by hand, so I couldn’t do it by feel, had to do it visually.

Well it was finally time to get this bad boy off of the engine stand and mate the trans up. I picked up 2 dollies from harbor freight and set it down on them.

Well i've about hit the limit for number of images. Next post if this gets approved!

Well that got approved rather quickly lol

I dropped the factory cross member and got the front of the car as high up in the air as I could. I ended up having to use a taller pair of jack stands (not pictured). Then we slid the motor under and dropped the car back down to the smaller jack stands. From here we lifted the motor up to the frame rails and bolted the new cross member in.

Though only for mock up, once everything is situated where it needs to be, intercooler piping is routed, brackets for everything are sorted out, then it comes back out for paint. Nonetheless this is a very big personal vicory for me! I had been staring at this thing on the engine stand for over a year.

https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpt1/v/t1.0-9/11393115_10203822268108150_1182656158901075169_n.j pg?oh=a1be19f9113215def0ac48cd65fa0b5f&oe=568D30E1

In the meantime, I had gotten a new job. More money, better benefits, better hours. So naturally I had to treat myself. So I picked up another evo. This one completely stock, and in much better condition. No random bumps, rattles, or clanks. I immediately decided to do some things to it that I really wanted to do to the other one I had. JDM evo 9 bumper, evo 7 tails, and I fixed some dings in the quarter.

Shortly after this, a bunch of buddies and I went up to no-star bash in Michigan this year. Here’s a pic of me getting a ride along with my buddy Bruce in his 1J Sc400

https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xtf1/v/t1.0-9/11111043_10203822275788342_3932907919801114857_n.j pg?oh=966c6306bc12ebadde39d4d1eee8a529&oe=56C0BD59

After No-Star, I started packing to move into a new place with my friend Kris. Got the car loaded up and sent over to the new garage.

Well I finally got settled in to the new place about a month ago and started working on the car again. First things to be tackled are the Mckinney downpipe and I also fabricated a trans mount.

https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/v/t1.0-9/11426515_10203822277028373_8644014982601802523_n.j pg?oh=cd5c520f2cb0b0a13bf16ee33fa54aff&oe=56C672AE

Well, that’s it for now. I’m in the middle of installing the chase bays tucked radiator and then I’ll be picking up an intercooler and some piping to get that all sorted out. Slowly getting closer to pulling the motor back out for paint.

Well I’ve been working on installing my Chase Bays tucked radiator, and as you can see from one of the pictures that I’ve also mounted my Chase Bays power steering reservoir on the driver’s front corner.

I’m waiting on my intercooler and piping to show up so I can get all of that sorted out before messing with other things in the bay too much. I have to be careful about making sure everything is gonna fit.

Well guys I’ve finally gotten off my butt and made a little bit more progress. Piping kit and intercooler came in. I’ll probably be going with a larger core eventually but this will be more than adequate for a while.

Here’s the core roughly mounted up.
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xtf1/v/l/t1.0-9/11755897_10203993675353224_1243551195937626092_n.j pg?oh=053a69229f2c43b7989eccfc77ddd4ce&oe=5694045A

I fabbed up some brackets for the lower mounts so that the intercooler would sit straight.

Also got my couplers in (most of them… ended up have to make a few orders because I didn’t pay enough attention to what I was doing)

It really wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be, just had to make sure to cut each peace about a half inch longer than expected, then slowly trim down until the parts line up. I’m going to be ordering my BOV and flange today and then working on the cold side at some point this week. The humidity has just been too damn high to do much.

Thanks for looking guys! Until next time!

Got some more work done on the hot side. Got the hot pipe put together and my filters and piping sorted out. Brought the piping into work today to get them all tacked together so I can drop them off for finish welding after work. My blow off valve and flange should be here Monday or so.

Here’s the hole I cut on the driver’s side. I’m actually pretty proud of the solution I came up with. I wanted to put the hole where the existing hole was for the intake muffler box, but there was nowhere for the pilot bit to drill into. I had a piece of aluminum flat bar laying around that I brought home from work, so I bolted that in place and drilled a hole into that for the pilot bit. It ended up working out really well.
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/v/t1.0-9/11745800_10204006904723950_5147912595601662605_n.j pg?oh=b57ec94c7b41ef882ab1f55e40d5a0e4&oe=5693355F

The front filter just needs to make 2 quick 90’s. So using a 2.5” 90deg couple and a 90deg pipe I got the front filter sorted out fairly quickly.
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xtf1/v/t1.0-9/11742875_10204006905283964_5526530950618682740_n.j pg?oh=0767047b4282dd5a01c4fc686f7a177a&oe=56531AE9

Been working on the wiring a little here and there. I've been pretty busy with school and work but work is slowing down for the winter so i should have some more time. I've also been spending a good portion of my free time house hunting, but i've got the majority of the major spending for the car done with so having a house payment shouldnt slow me down too bad.

Anyway on to the pics!

It's far from perfect, but I am EXTREMELY satisfied with how it turned out for my first attempt. Not as difficult as it looks but very very very time consuming.

Looking solid. My next step is learning how to weld and wiring. Any advice for where to start learning about wiring on the web?

Speedhunters had a wiring specialist write a couple of articles not long ago. I can't remember his company name but if you do a search I'm sure you'll find it all. He has an email sign up lesson thing if I remember right.

Incredible build also, can't wait to see what you do next.
