The general rule of thumb on emissions is this......

First off, your VEHICLE must pass the emission standards put forth for it for the year it was manufactured. It must also have all of the smog/emissions equipment on it that it was born with. So as long as you can keep the polution down under spec and it has the proper equipment, you should be fine.

I'm sure you can do a search in the for forums for more info,

CA is very strict, as long as the motor is same year or newer, from a US market Nissan vehicle with all smog devices in place and as long as the car passes smog...

search you'll find more on CA rules

I'm not sure what you're trying to say, but if you are talking about engine swaps (not SR, just any ol engine swap) in California you can put a motor into a car that is newer or the same year as the car. OK, the catch though, is that the motor must have been offered from the manufacturer in that year car. This is considered an "engine replacement" and completely legal and dandy. But if you install a motor that was not offered in that car ever, then you need to make sure to install ALL pertinant smog equipment that the engine came with from the factory, and have a ref check it. Then it will be legal, and any smog shop will smog it for you.

just in case anyone was wondering, SR20DETs will NEVER EVER be legal.

not in CA. You can only swap in a engine that was an option on that car and/or the same obd. You can call the department of consumer affairs and request information to be mailed to you for free. There are 2 or 3 brochures that they have avl.

its not the dmv, its carb and bar that makes you do this, but yes...that would pass. You have to take it to a referee after the swap and they will check it out and then give you a sticker for whenever you smog it in the future.

Shouldnt matter as long as the motor is the same age or newer and he swaps all the smog equipment over. Including the computer. Were there any ODBII 7's? That would suck lol.
