View Full Version : Using Manual harness for s13 5 speed swap?

When I bought my manual conversion parts- the seller gave me the full manual harness that goes from the trans to the fuse box.
After reading some of the how-to guides, I now see that I didn't really need it - but since I already went and swapped the harnesses already - I am curious if I still need to do the two wiring modifications?
1. the park neutral jump - I assume I still need to do this
2. wire the reverse lights, this I shouldn't have to do since I'm using the manual harness?
Any help would be appreciated, trying to finish this up today.

Auto and manual chassis are wired differently.
You need to use the auto lower harness with your car for things to work right.
And yes, jump the neutral switch by the fuse box. If you want reverse light you can hardwire them.

+1
The only harness you can keep when doing the 5-Speed Swap is the wire for the speed sensor. Everything else should be hardwired

ok I just finished today and the car drives fine, starts fine.
I used the lower manual harness- which goes to the manual trans - starter - fuse box - alternator. I didn't realize that I didn't need it- too late I guess
But as you guys are saying - my reverse lights don't work and my speedometer doesn't work.
Which plug near the fuse box is for the speed sensor?
I notice this other small plug - green coloured at the end hanging- I use this for the speed sensor or the reverse lights?

Yeah, it will run and drive alright, but the sense wire for the alternator is on a different wire so a lot of times it will either be making too much voltage or not enough.
The auto lower harness is what you should be using.

^Lower harness, meaning the harness that goes to alternator/ starter/ fusebox etc - not the harness on the auto trans itself right?
These harnesses confuse me lol
So technically I shouldn't have removed any of the auto wiring at all - correct?
The guy gave me the manual harness with the swap so I assumed I needed to use it. Dammit!

Yes, all the starter/alt/fusebox stuff is the lower harness. Trans harness is separate.
If you put in the auto lower your speedo should work.

oh man, I spent so much time putting that manual harness in- had to destroy the plug for the alternator (on auto harness) and also this plug/sensor that plugged into the power steering rack. Manual harness didn't have that plug either.
So the manual harness will give me problems with the alternator over time?
So if I use the auto harness... I have to hardwire the plugs for the manual trans right?

Well in my experience (when I used a manual lower harness in my auto chassis) my alternator was kicking out 16v and fried a wideband gauge in the process.
All you need to wire in are the reverse lights if you want them. I haven't bothered in my car but I also only drive it to and from events.

alright cool,
I guess I will give this a try and put it back in
I wish there is this thing called a FSM that has pictures of every harness in a 240sx and pictures of every electrical plug and connector AND colors of the wires AND it shows the differences in the wiring between automatic and manual.
Instead we are stuck with zilvia and people lacking common sense doing car stuff. Ffffff 2015

Sorry to thread jack, but I have gone throu 5 clusters
I have a sr in my converted to 5spd s13
I'm using 5spd harness
I have hooked up the tails (180sx) so idk if reverse lights work or not
Anyways, after a short time my cluster will completely die and never work again
I can put a working cluster in and few days later lose power
I checked voltage from battery while running and it's showing 14.5s volts
Any idea why the cluster keeps dieing on me?
