I'm sure I am not the only person thinking of a better way to lift a vehicle without it being much of a hassle. And if your OCD about your car like I am and do anticipate an alternative. Then please read on.

With a regular floor jack and some wood we can get by on most cars. But we're not like most people and depending on our own project cars. It gets to be a real choir and safety hazard to have a lowered vehicle up in air without damage.

So I hopped on Google and started looking for any or all types of automotive jack. This is what I found.

Product listed by price from least to most expensive.

After many long hours of research. I don't think there is much of a choice in ways to lift a lowered vehicle. A two post hoist would be nice but my garage ceiling is not tall enough for it. What about an underground trench where you can drive your vehicle over? Digging a pit may not be a good idea, plus something like that is dangerous. It would be nice to have a in ground hoist that is level with the floor, that would be great for low ground clearance cars. Unless you're not using it a lot to justify the cost of installing one. That's money not very well spent.

I can live with driving up on one or more wood blocks chalked under the front or rear tires. But you are limited on how much you can stuff under one tire. Just to gain every inch possible to have a "low profile" floor jack slip right up under the vehicle, and hope that it makes good contact with a solid surface and not anywhere "expensive". But lifting a lowered vehicle continuously, it gets old real quick.

Currently I have the highly popular 1.5 ton Harbor Freight floor jack and so far it has been a hit or miss product. I had to return one Harbor Freight jack after it almost killed me due to a bad "pump seal". So I hopped on Google and found a 2 Ton super low pro jack from ATD part number 7325. That sucker weighs 125 pounds and is between 3-4 feet long. From Amazon it cost me $175 dollars shipped five years ago. Now its $275 - $350 dollars if I want to buy another one.

Prices sure has gone up for specialty low profile floor jacks. It seems like two thirds of floor jack manufactures have a standard and a minimum workable highest of at least 2.5 - 3.0 inches at its lowest point. And advertise that heavily on their packaging towards folks with low ground clearance vehicles. The trend is now a main selling point for most jacks, also adding features such as the fast 2-3 quick pump action. Over time I've noticed this became a new standard due to new vehicles such as the Corvette, Ferrari, Porsche, and others having lower and lower ground clearance straight from factory.

Here's my rant. A more effective tool is needed. Buying a floor jack can be expensive and a typical user is consciously making a onetime investment on an all in one tool that needs to perform on all vehicles served. Not only is the 3 inch low profile height on a floor jack important, the remaining body of the floor jack has to be low profile as well. On some cars, a 3 inch jack is still too high and not low enough to reach in way under the vehicle.

Unfortunately due to the design and mechanical limitation of the floor jack out in the market today, I don't think it's possible.

If you have read this far. Thank you for your interest! :)

I'm not really sure what's so complicated about jacking up a car that it requires a thread dedicated to it.

Personally, I want to weld some tubes into the rocker panel so i can use the BMW style lift points though. That would be pretty convenient and wouldn't break the bank.

andy107, if you would have used jack stands, like you SHOULD, that leaking jack seal wouldn't have almost killed you. Working under the car with no jack stands, gets killed by failed jack seal lowering the car onto him. I call that natural selection...

These things are really convenient. They come in various heights and interlocking arrangements.

Relax killer. No one is asking for clarification on their jacking complications, mostly just a poll of various methods/products.

Wow, that's high up. A high lift floor jack had to be used for that kind of height.
