Hey guys, I have a 97 se 5spd w/o abs. A kid 5minutes away offered me a smoking deal on his early 95 engine (an OBD I engine) 5spd trany, ecu, and wiring harness. My main concern is that my 97 engine harness is slightly different than the 95's and consequently I am concerned as to the compatibility between my main body harness (97) and the 95 engine harness/ecu. I think that the only thing that i will loose will be the ability to use my stock 97 OBDII plug that is located directly above the pedals. If anyone out there with an early 95 (or possibly a ka24de s13) could email me as to the location of their OBDI diagnostic plug i would be very grateful. Also if anyone has any experience swapping an OBDI engine into an OBDII chasis or vice versa I would be estatic to hear from you. My plans are to build up the 95 ka to make it turbo ready for my 97 chasis, all-the-while being able to drive my car (minimal down time). I really don't think that this swap will be a big deal (an sr swap works just fine as long as you have the ecu, uncut harness (which you need to extend the o2 and the maf wires), and the engine/tranny), but I just want to make sure before I invest any more dough.

Alright, why are you swapping in an older engine? That's the first question.
The 95s have the OBD plug behind/below the glovebox, against the console.
None of this matters, because you can just swap the intake manifold off your motor and be done with it, and then sell the 95 ECU and harness. If for some reason you want to keep the 95 electronics, it's illegal to swap an older motor into a chassis in any state. If that's ok with you, then swap the entire setup, motor, transmission, ECU, and harness, however you will need a 95-96 wiper motor and wiper amplifier since the plugs are different. You'll also need to swap the rear lower engine harness going to the crank position sensor and rear heated O2 sensor since the 95-96 is a 3-wire, 97-98 is 4-wire. The F3 plug will line up, but will have a few open pins, no big deal.

I'm going to rebuild the 95 to get it ready for some BOOST!! I know about the whole legality of swaping in an older engine. Thanks for the information though, swapping the intake manifold definitely sounds like my best bet. How can an s14 sr20det be sucessfully swapped into an OBDI 95 or an OBDII 96-98 then? Thankyou for your help

They don't use the OBD system in japan. You rip out the KA harness and put in the SR.

Who said anything about an SR?

If you don't care about legality rip out that OBD2 crap.
It really is crap. All my OBD1 stuff was useless. About 5 vac lines to nothing. Seriously.
The wiring is different and you'll need to adapt the harness a little bit (cut off crap and sort the wires).
I probably had it worse S14 OBD2 -> S13 OBD1...
Yeah... Before you go rippin out all the OBD2 crap you better make sure you have a way to get through emissions...
