Here's the story... My cousin doesnt take care of his cars very well, and he's low on money. My mom bought his 98 Eclipse GS. I'm wondering if its worth the trouble if i were to help my mom pay off this car, and keep it as a beater and turn my S14 into a track whore. The Eclipse is an auto so its perfect for me to drive to school/work. But there will most likely need to be stuff worked on/fixed. Just wanted to know what you guys would do?

i'd get all I could for that POS and buy something reliable (or if not reliable, cheap)

buy it, sell it, profit = good!

Get something better/more reliable....

I dont think i could sell the eclipse for 8k+what needs fixed n have profit. Its BOUND to have tranny problems n such. possibly even more.

the a420(i think thats it) isnt a unreliable motor, i have 4 firends, with avengers, and eclipses, and they all have 150+ and still running strong!

I'd be concerned about the trans if the car has been abused and not very well maintained on top of that...

HyperTech - Ahaha, i was actually planning on making it look nice. Not rice it out really, but put some nice wheels on it, e/i/h, and some interior stuff. But i would want to know the condition of the car before i go any further.

I thought the engine code was 4g63, but yeah. They can get insanely fast, but the tranny is glass and the motor has a history of being shit.

heh, you said "insanely fast" about a FWD eclipse. how quaint.

I'm not trying to make the eclipse go fast, i just wanna make it look nice. Decent wheels, nice paint job, i/h/e, maybe a sound system. And just completely gut n shave off as much as possible from the S14. :D

He's talking about a GS model... non-turbo. I wouldn't say it has much potential unless you swap it or add a bolt-on turbo.

It'd really depend how much you can get the car for. If you get a good deal then it'd be a good buy, if not then it's not worth the hassle.

I thought the GS had the 4G block just much much higher compression? I know that the 1G (1st gen) DSM's have 4G63's in the GS model,I just 'helped' a guy swap out a dead one for a fresh one...

I know the RS has a 1.8 (not sure of the code) and the GST and GSX have the same engine(turbo 4G). The GST being FWD,and the GSX being AWD.

nope the rs and gs of 95-99, had the a420, a DSM motor designed, for those years eclipses, and n/a talons too.. also for the dodge avengers...which used the same chassis.... the turbo eclipse and talon had a 4g63-T in them...
