okay dudes, calling all ka24de experts: ill write this from start to finish.
a few months ago i did a 248/232 cam swap. the car always ran rich, and like shit. even after timing it, it always sputtered and sounded floody. over the last few weeks it started acting really strange though. the first incident was my o2 sensor going off. the car has never had an engine light (under my ownership, anyway). i did, however, notice it running a bit more rich lately, and thought that would explain it. did the o2, light turned off, but it still ran like junk. a bit better, but still ran like shit. last week on saturday i drove my car from pickering to oshawa, (whites to ritson, if anyone knows the area) and gave it some gas on the highway. it was fine, sounded cool. the car always ran awesome on the highway, and higher up in the revs. not floody at all. i got to ritson, parked the car, hung out for a while, and after about an hour or so went to leave. got in the car, and it started up fine. heres where shit starts to get weird. the car started missing. like, really bad. across four cylinders. would hardly idle. i thought it was plugs soaked, so i just drove the 3k of highway driving to work (ritson to stevenson). it was misfiring and driving like shit all the way there. the engine legit felt like it fell out of timing, because it just would not go. it would miss, hesitate etc.. so i get to work, hear a snap and the car dies. whatever. leave the car there, go to topp drift with some pals, come back the next day and realize that it was a dirty connection on the negative side of the battery terminal (lol, at the time i thought i needed an alt). wipe it as clean as i can, spray some brake cleaner on the fouled plugs, and it starts up fine. except now it is idling higher than normal. 1500 rpm to be exact. i don't think much of it, and drive it around anyway. do some hektik skidz to test it out, everythings gravy m8. so i drive the car from oshawa to pickering to drop off the car i was borrowing with a pal. in pickering, i go to start the car and it floods. weird, my car never flooded before this. wait a few minutes, start it again with the gas pedal to the floor and it starts but is missing and shit again due to the plugs being fouled. give it some gas, it stops missing on the drive and is fine. still idling at 1500 rpm though. i then notice the engine light on again, and my buddy actually comments on how rich the car is running, complaining that the smell of gas inside the car is actually giving him a headache. a bit dramatic, but it did smell very gassy. i have an exhaust leak right under my manifold cat (slammed life, yo), but this was bad. so i decide right then and there i need the cam gone. take it to a buddies shop and we work on it for a while, and he ended up having to take out the intake side cam, exhaust side cam and distributor. threw everything back together, stabbed the dizzy on the right mark, no resistance, viva la france. goes to crank it over, crank crank crank no start. its flooding. cleans plugs, (heres where it gets dumb) takes out the fuel pump fuse, starts up great. no problems. ran for a while with the fuel pump fuse out, too. he told me 15 minutes at one point. i thought the plugs werent giving a good enough spark to deal with pressurized gas being thrown at it, so i got new plugs. threw them in last night, nothing. same story. without the fuel pump fuse it will run for a while, until it eventually runs out of gas thats in the lines/egr. but while its running it sounds fine, doesn't miss a beat. still idles at 1500 rpm though. i am completely beat and lost, if anyone has any
TL;DR
The engine started running like shit, richer and richer and richer, then it started idling high, and being hard to start, and now it wont start and just instantly floods. get fuel, spark and compression on all four cylinders because without the fuel pump connected it runs fine (until it runs out of the gas already in the flooded system). help.
