It's occuring for me more often now. I'm proud of the way I shift, I've never had problem with grinding or misshifting or anything. Within the last 6 months, 3rd gear has grinded on me about 8 times.

This only happens when I'm slightly pushing the car...happens from above 3k to redline. My engine is stock, no mods except a C's shifter, and even with the stock shifter, it still grinds. When I push it into third using an inverted wrist, it grinds, but the gear is okay in 3rd after the grinding.

Ancient post, but it's worth a try. Now, my question is, what is YOUR solution to this? I don't wanna hear anything like swap to an SR, it's the easy way out. I know a lot of people have this problem and its worth bringin up again.

I feel like I could never go onto a track if I have this problem. I'm really paranoid about it, and it usually happens on an on-ramp into a freeway.

thanks for any help.

edit: only happens on an upshift, from 2->3

I have this problem on any KA that I track. 3rd gear just grinds...I'm guessing that it gets oil starved after awhile because usually at the beginning of the day it does not happen.

I could probably fix the problem by running a higher weight oil, but then it would probably grind alot on the street. Such is life.

When it grinds, is it just the feeling of grinding, or is it audible?

I would try synchromesh or redline oils along with learning how to double clutch/rev match. Worked for me

anyone know how the syncro's are set up on our cars? i know on the higher priced perfomance cars they have double and triple cone syncros goin up from 1rst to 3rd, to help them last longer thru harder driving. maybe a tranny shop could help you out with somethin like this?

hmm
it's been so long since i've looked at the tranny internals I've forgotten. Take a look at an FSM and i can tell you.. or maybe even a sales brochure.

what kind of bs...nah, jk

I know how to rev-match very well, but is there such thing as rev matching on an UPSHIFT? Because that is my problem...only grinding from 2->3.

Yes, the grind is audible, I feel slight vibrations through the shift knob, like I'm clanking through some teethed gears.

sounds like the synchro is starting to go. not a big deal though. but it can't be fixed without a rebuild.

try changing the transmission fluid. you might get longer life out of it. someone said b4, try synchromesh or redline mt90. i have noisy bearings and switched to redline mt90. still can hear it faintly though. i'll probably switch to another used tranny in a year or so.

change the fluid, drive as is. snatch up the first $100 KA transmission you see in your area. swap it out at your leisure. rebuild the old one as a learning project. or take it to a reputable tranny shop and have them rebuild it.

yup, same problem here two, i did 2 things to make it occur less often.. 1) keep the clutch fluid nice and clean, 2) replace the damn dampner box for the clutch with a nismo steel braided line. 2 things happen when you press in the clutch pedal, clutch and tranny related things.. with the cleaner fluid, it smoothes out the process i suppose... hell, all i know is it worked for me and my friends. if this doesnt, just double clutch 2 into 3..

The tranny on my sr grinded 2->3 at the track but only mid-drift when i ran out of revs in 2nd gear.

my tranny grinds 2->3rd after 6k as well. But I know it's from me driving in the 4k+ range all the time, and all the damn clutch kicks. I'll be searching around for another tranny soon.

who still double-clutches nowadays?

i have doubts about steel braided lines...i've heard of too many cases where something has gone wrong. I will check the clutch fluid.

steel braided lines are fine as long as you change them regularly (every year or so i've read). if you treat them like OEM lines (leave em there for years), then they will fray and fail without warning.
